Why Native Americans will not be watching the solar eclipse

- While the whole country watches The Great American Solar Eclipse, an event The American Astronomical Society predicts will be the most-watched total solar eclipse in history, there's a sub-set of the population who won't be watching. We learn why Native Americans are sensitive to an eclipse and believe it's a time of reflection and a time to be indoors.
who here in 2024
Me too! I believe them and I'n going to follow this advice.. I was going to watch the eclipse but I'll take the advice of the tribe.. they have been observing this for many many years
This video 6 years ago and the solar eclipse is on a Monday 🧠💣

@@mllebiddies I hear that. If one lumps all Asians or all Middle Easterners in together, he gets crucified. But lump all Native Americans in together. "You're good bro"
That's why they don't use the tribal names.... Cherokee.... Seminole..... Apache.....ect

my great-great-grandmother was pure-blooded Chickasaw. that's exactly what my instinct was to do. stay inside!
🌹🌿 Trust your instinct. I'm also, staying inside. Native Americans have wisdom, that even us other Americans should take heed of.
@@eveadame1059 you are silly 😂😂 stay inside no one cares but you don't have to come on RUclips replying to a 6 year old comment

I don’t give a goddamn what you thieving Indians do. As far as I’m concerned you’re all nothing but a bunch of rain dancers.
Yes, ignore it.
If you stay inside the house you are still thinking about it.
I'm a EBCI member. From Cherokee NC. I know what my ancestors taught but the biggest thing I learned was family was everything. And the solar eclipse brought not only my family together but the world's families together.

I read the Cherokee believe the moon was a frog trying to eat the sun and they would make noise to scare the frog off .
Probably good advice handed down from ancestors who may have been blinded during a full solar eclipse.

@JeffSmith-it4tm IVe seen white alcoholics as well, white drug users too 😵 That must have been a once in a life time occurrence I saw with that white addict 😱
@@miss_treeliv8204- It is a known fact that Native Americans have a higher rate of alcoholism in their communities. That is WHY they call it the “White Man’s Fire.”
It was a religious and rejuvenating experience for me because I was outside. We saw totality at a lake, surounded by mountains and trees. Then I spent the whole afternoon swimming in the lake. The weekend also included a hike through the mountains and looking at the galaxy at night.
Sounds like a nice place to live, where is that? (Refugee looking for a new place)
Thanks to these good people, for being voices of reason, calm, and sanity...My late father taught school in Marana, on the PAPAGO land, for some years. He loved and respected the culture and always came away wiser and more enriched, spiritually. The native belief in the context for the eclipse as one of: rejuvenation, rededication, realignment makes the most sense of anything I have heard and read so far. My deep gratitude to you all...

Wow that is scary. They are doing the exact opposite of everyone else buying glasses to stare at it and going to outdoor parties and gatherings for it. He said it can effect you mentally down the road years later or even physically.
On top of that this news story was like public disclosure of the potential truth …. So then later they can claim we knew all along…
I watched in 2017 and my life went downhill after! Almost until now, ironically…I mean everything negative from moving, losing my home, divorce, even being locked up…you name it! It has not been good for me since then! So I wonder if this may be true 🫠
@@MCognettaable I wonder if it ever wears off again if you got cursed or went crazy from it.

I am I'm Canada and I won't be watching this at all
I will follow their advise.
Very educational. I appreciate that. Thank you for sharing this 💛
Omg .. since I was a kid I had a feeling it's not a good thing to watch or participate in any kind of activities around eclipses.. I got in trouble at school because deep down I felt sick and I left the classroom..
Now this makes more sense. .. I am not native American but it's within Me . I always felt that.
Thank you for educating.
I stayed indoors, did some journaling and ended up going to sleep. I just didn't have a strong desire to watch and felt the need to sleep despite having had a restful night's sleep the night before. I later found out that eclipse energies are best downloaded/uploaded during sleep. I also have native ancestry via my father's side that I've never really look into.
Congratulations to all the people that continues with the great culture through the time.
What is the big deal? Live in fear all day because the media says --- must be hard living in a prison where nothing and no one is safe.
tell me you didn’t listen or watch the video without telling me you didn’t watch the video. has nothing to do with the “media” , it’s a powerful sacred event. LISTEN
Thank you! So appreciate the information on the eclipse and your school districts.
What did you find useful about what they shared regarding their unfounded beliefs about the eclipse?
Every time he says "sacred" do a shot.
👍🤔 Beginning 1:55 Listen closely to what Freddie Johnson said. I think the native Americans may know something we non native Americans don't even have a clue about. 😔
They claim viewing it can give you ill health or mess up your life in some way. The outcomes of their own lives as compared to ppl who have viewed eclipses show it to be an unfounded belief. I know ppl who have viewed it that have done more good for their own selves and others as well as they are in better health than these who make such claims.
I’ll def will be watching but I have spent the time leading up to April 8th learning about how past cultures regarded the solar system and eclipses. It’s good to love science but it’s also beneficial to know how those before us viewed and regarded the skies.
I'm part Indian and by instinct I mostly stayed indoors during the eclipse. Now I know why. It was actually really weird seeing the lights of the house on in the daytime. I think it was just as special as the corona around the sun seeing the house lights shine bright in a time it is not natural to do so.
I'm Native and my family watched, and so did all the other Natives I know.
I believe they said Navajo and other Southwestern tribes. Including Mayan and Mexica Aztec believe the moon was sacred. Not all tribes believe this just like not all tribes live in tepee.

In the past, they could never predict when an eclipse was coming. I can’t even imagine the feeling of watching a total eclipse without any idea of it. The tradition stood but science evolved.
I spent the eclipse with natives in Warm Springs, OR. They watched and were a great blessing to all the visitors to their nation there. Thank You Warm Springs residents!
Beautiful share! It is a special event .... The belief they have expressed here is unfounded and pointless.
Thank you, very good information.
good job, thanks now I am going to go in my storm shelter until the eclipse is over.
Real hard-hitting journalism here. Don't bother to ask "What repercussions? What health/mental effects?"
Yeah, just 100% PC sucking up.
Native Elder: “We love passing our superstitious beliefs about the sun, moon and earth communing with each other on to our children, and we sure don’t want them doing anything scary and dangerous like looking at a planetary phenomenon!!”
Interviewer: “Wow! That’s so cool! How interesting! Neat-o!!”
🙄
Given that many of these ppl are plagued by ill health and poor education, I would not put too much stock into what they are claiming.
Also assuming all Native Americans have the same beliefs. She tried to explain that they are talking about Arizona but he wanted all Native people to be the same
@@mothball5425 It's interesting when you realize that they are the """natives""" WRT Europeans, but there were already OTHER natives here when THESE natives arrived. And yet they be all like, "YOU drove us from OUR land!!!"
Conquests and migrations, bro. For all of human history. Deal widdit.
@@PanhandleFrank if you think Europeans were in the Americans first, you are sadly mistaken. Sounds like you just have a racist agenda to push. Not to mention Christianity had its own beliefs that many feel are ridiculous
It does make sense. I have Native American ancestors. My Great Great Grandmother was Native American and my Great Great Grandfather was Native American. So I understand where they are coming from. No wonder why I am so spiritual. Native Americans are real spiritual and hold everything to high regard when it comes to that and when it comes to the earth.
Where are they coming from?? "Native" Americans are generally struggling ppl, many of whom are in poor health. I know many ppl who viewed the last eclipse and they are doing much better for their own selves and others as well as they are in better health than these ppl. Do I believe viewing the eclipse makes their lives better? No. I think not holding onto unfounded beliefs makes for better quality of life. Not saying no beliefs are good ... Just ones that don't make sense.
@@Katrielible what the hell are you rambling about?… don’t be doing none of that spellcasting stuff around here
I think she was trying to be responsible as an educator to clarify that there are many tribes in Arizona, but also across North America and there is not a “Native American” way, so they are speaking specific to Navajo teachings. Those other tribes have their own language and beliefs.
Thankyou Brother and Sister.

Something to do with the Jinns, but hardly anyone talks about it.
I feel like I was replenished observing and yes preparing for the future. I worked on an important task
I'm native American (Choctaw) and have never heard this, I respect their beliefs but will use my eclipse glasses to view it from southern Oklahoma.
As an Indigenous Canada I'm with you on this. I'm not sure why it is being generalized for all Indigenous tribes.
I'm white and it sounds like b.s😂
You're right. Not all Native tribes believe the same thing. They also didn't have eclipse glasses back in the day so I'm sure that vision protection had a lot to do with it
This very good piece of information.
Awesome! I'm glad I stayed in - did try and take a peek through some tacky glasses - will never peep at it again. (My paternal Grandmother 1/2 Cherokee, prior generations 100%, so maybe different tribes have different traditions, but this feels right to me. Thank-you!
Crazy as I know ppl who did not pass up the opportunity to view eclipses and they have done and are doing better in life than many of those who don't view it based on unfounded beliefs. I mean, if someone wants to miss it, that is their choice but to miss it solely based on a belief that has proved wrong is sad. It is a special event .... To miss it if you don't have to seems like a waste to me.
Can you please let me know what to do as native American when the eclipse is happening.
Should I smoke my Chanupa? In what way? Any comments will help. Much blessing and thanks in advance! Aho Metakiase.
That's really great way to think of it, I thought of it as a cleanse
I didn't directly watch, I looked at the dark outside while I got a ton of thing done. Super energizing.
Thank you for sharing
What are the specific consequences for looking at the eclipse?
I have not had any. Seeing as how these are a struggling ppl and are more often than not plagued by ill health, I would not put much thought into what they are claiming. If they were more healthy and thriving, then perhaps I would be more inclined to listen. Many of the ppl I know who view eclipses are doing far more good for their own selves and for others and they also are generally in better health than those who don't view it based on beliefs. If I had a belief regarding the eclipse, I would base it on the evidence of outcomes and thus would be more inclined to believe it is better to view than to purposely avoid it. ❤❤❤
You grow another head.
Very beautiful. Mother Nature at work. That day was peaceful and relaxing. I felt the peacefulness and rejuvenation. I didn't want that day to end. 🌑
They interview the lady first but she does not say anything about the eclipse. The actual info starts at 1:44
they wouldn’t know to stay indoors if it wasn’t in the news...
This is new to me. Do all tribes believe what these two are saying? Are these beliefs documented anywhere by elders? I would like to research further.
We are a wise people whom fully understand the meaning and grave dangers involved with this kind of rare solar event......
This is very true. Rituals like this reach all the way to south Mexico. My mother's side of the family are native to the Caxcan tribe and believed in very similar things. Most if not all things are to be avoided on this day from giving birth (because the child would be burn cursed), to something small like cutting your hair (it would become damaged).
An innocent child being cursed?
All this things have been transformed with time and people added superstitions specially after the Catholic Church, "being cursed" is a catholic concept. Native Americans wisdom was based on science and also spirituality. Things I've head with the eclipse is that pregnant women should not be directly exposed to the eclipse for the baby's health, maybe because of the powerful energetic reasons that they mentioned in this videos.
My grandfather was NA, and the church forced everyone into catholicism, so instead of him doing his healing work, he became an exorcist, he didn't believe in the church. He used to say that people was sick because of their own mind (although church made people believe it was "cursing" "devil" and all that bs).
@@rociolu1422 interesting, what about the hell concept?
I was watching the eclipse and felt very uneasy, dizzy and nauseous. The energy is very powerful. I’m part native American from Rowe New Mexico.

Interesting and wiser to do, that is for sure.
This is exactly why it takes so long for scientific facts to take hold among the worldwide population. Science proves what is real but that takes a long time to seep in.
I wonder if this applies also to even watching it later on recorded video?
The views of eclipses explained in this interview is almost identical to how ancient Europeans saw them.
I like how the reporter asks about the eclipses significance in their culture and she just goes on about her programs in the school district..so he asks again and finally guy answers..,whaa

I'm not an expert on native religions, and I think the woman in this interview mentioned this briefly at the beginning, but aren't there many native tribes in the country? I feel like asking one tribe how "THE Native American culture" views an eclipse is a bit generalizing.
It’s offensive in my opinion. There are 574 federally recognized tribes, and each have their own specific beliefs about the eclipse. Kind of ignorant in my opinion to ask that question, and group all tribes together.
why are no comments available?
Did they ever answer the question?

Maybe there is some truth to what he said about not viewing it and how it can affect you. I have seen many people claim that they felt different or weird during the eclipse. I personally didn't notice anything but that does not mean others did notice something. I'm just looking at this a possibility not saying is complete fact.
I never heard him explain why it is sacred, and if it is, to the tribe, why not participate?
I follow Native American history, but I'm still confused by why they won't look at the eclipse. Will it cause them great harm? Is it taboo? Please clarify.
It is a useless belief that their lives clearly contradict.
This great! I didn't watch it. I liked the belief that it's when the universe aligns!
