Richland Balsam Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina

Richland Balsam Trail is about 1.4 mile loop trial. Although not known for views at the summit, the trail traverses thru a nice fragrant fir forest. Green moss drapes itself on rocks and fallen logs. Parking is at the Richland Overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway. 6/21

I hiked this trail alone last March. It's an incredibly beautiful high elevation spruce-fir forest, and the trees seem unusually dense, especially in the summit area. It was very dark, even though the sun was shining. I wouldn't hike there alone again - although beautiful, the vibe in the forest is creepy. A surprisingly easy hike, and there are a couple of decent views off to the west on the way down.
