Hey guys, Here's a video to show you how to adjust your valves on a motorcycle. specifically a 2002 Suzuki Katana 600. Its pretty detailed and i tried to make it as entertaining as possible. Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Excellent video. I have a good mechanical mind but have never done tappet adjustments before. This video highlights perfectly how simple it really is once you have your head around it. Thanks!
NOTE: Hope you all remember to do this every 7,500 miles as per the manual - Takes the edge off the naturally clattery Air/Oil cooled engine which helps me sleep at night lol
best tutorial on that bike i found so far
im gonna do it today on my 1988 model year. wish me luck... its a beater bike i bought cheap and i dont think there was mantenance be done in the past 15000 miles
great video! should i ever attempt it, im gonna definitely refer to your very thorough video. great job bro! wish you would have done one on the carb adjustment....😕
+Eric Serrano was going too, but I used a different camera and the video was unusable. Next time maybe... 😉
why not silicon the new cover seal in the grove on cover instead of on flat head and then trying to line it up. lucky it sealed.
God, this would take days for someone new to try and do without messing anything up. You took off almost everything. I cleaned the carbs in my 750 01 cat awhile ago, and was contemplating adjusting the valves while syncing the carb and changing the spark plugs, but after seeing this.... F that.
+Blaice it's a lot of stuff to take off but it's pretty easy and straight forward. It should only take about 3hr to do everything. Took me 6hr having to deal with camera angles and family drama.
3hrs? No way. Maybe if you already possess all of the knowledge, but comprehending which is exhaust and intake, ordering all of the new seals, and taking off everything and putting it back together alone would take at least 4+ and I'd wager way more than that. I might still do it, but it'll take a long time.
dude it is really not that hard at all
im an idiot for replying to a year old comment. my apologies.
Hi
did you loosen all adjusters without measuring before or did I see it wrong?
Whatever, one suggestion from an old pro/greaser which makes the job far more easy.
Take out the sparkplugs, then turn cylinderwise till the right tdc.Thats the one when the valves are all closed.
Easy to see it while you do turn through both tdc's
Then the camlobes of this cylinder dont touch a valve.
Now you can measure every valve of the cylinder and correct it if necessary.
greets Richard
Wish I had seen this before I rotated the engine the hard way pulling off the cover and turning the crank. 🤔
This is the first bike that the chain doesn't come off as well. I was going to drop it in my sonic cleaner. Pulled the tire, and what the h***, it is around the fork tube.
I'm not taking all that apart....$%^@#&^*
But the bent feeler gauges are well worth it for the adjusting. I broke down and got the adjuster wrench as well for that square head on ebay.
Had to buy the oil wrench I will never use again since I went with the oil filter with the nut on it.
What a shock the cylinder with the stutter also has the valve that was loose.
Can't believe they call the bike white, when it is mostly blue. Gas tank color used to be the bike color.
i have the bike opened now and could really use your help
I confused my self there too bro...
The valves at the front of the motor are exhaust, and the ones at the rear are intake. Front is closest to the handlebars. If you follow the illustration you'll be ok.
+Alex Nguyen let me know if you need any more help... ;)
+Fix-n-It phew!!! i did it and she runs better than ever!! your video on youtube was the ONLY video i found to help me out step by step! Thank you!

i found that this manual goes in depth with how you adjust the valves with a nice picture. takes a couple times of reading the same paragraph to understand it but it totally made sense and worked!

+Alex Nguyen hey thanks for liking the video. be sure to share it with your friends and subscribe I have at at least one new video a month. be sure to check out my newest video.
your video us helping me right now, i have my 2001 katana opened up, but in confused on what you meant by intake and exhaust. i have no idea which ones are intake and exhaust after yohr explination. could you please link me to a sirvice manual or tell me which one is intake and which one is exhaust?
Your cylinder order at 10:10 is off it goes 1243 not 1234. Did you notice a difference after running the bike?
I was wondering if this was a shim or a rocker type. Thanks for the video! Do you know if it is the same on the Bandit?
Some of the 600s were shims.
But only a couple years.
The rest and all the 750 were adjustable tappets.
Please follow the maintenance manual for proper procedures, I would not recommend this video unless you are on a desert island
I appreciate the criticism eventhough I used the manual during the procedure. 👍
@@Fixnit14 How come you didn't remove the signal generator cover and turn the crankshaft using a 19 millimeter wrench like the manual states. also you stated that the valve clearence was in whole millimeters, good job other than that
The millimeters was a slip I did catch in editing.
And for me it's easier and faster to leave the bike in gear and spin the tire then to open the crankcase and turn the crank. Working as a professional you learn to find the fastest way to do the work to make the most money without compromising the quality of the job. That was my personal bike at the time and I drove it another 10,000 + miles before it got wrecked beyond repair.
@@Fixnit14 excellent
why is he using so much silicone if he is using new gaskets? That is the bike I hate to work on after someone like that!
Easy easy way to remember
TDC #1 then you can check
Intake (#1)
Exhaust (#1)
Exhaust (#2)
Up & across (Intake #3)
Then set #4 TDC & repeat process 😊
Thanks for the awesome video! I was curious as to where you got the gaskets?
+Lyle Murphy most all my OEM parts I get from www.bikebandit.com
They have some great prices on tires too.
Can you please tell me my bike rpm is not stable when i increase a little bit it increases alot when I decrease little bit it came down and then turned off on 2k rpm also on riding after few km the rpm drastically came down and down and then turned off and it wont start until cool or my friend pushed start me but it still stops after few km help plz
And today i noticed that one of my carb is smoking like steam
HOLA AMIGO, DONDE PUEDO CONSEGUIR ESOS EMPAQUES?
Why not check clearences before we slackening the locknuts?
You could... but there is a recommended service time for the procedure. I can't recall at the moment when it is though. On cars it somewhere between 50k and 100k. Motorcycles would be much less because motorcycles are not expected to go beyond 100k. (I would assume anyway)
Please will u tell me what is length size of clutch rode. Please
Dont know sorry
Wow da kho ma rapaida kra
9cm
I have see that your bike has a fan on it. Is this standard I have a 750 and has no fan
+Craig Commons it's standard on a 2002 600cc
@@Fixnit14 guess the faster speed of the 750 makes it redundant. LOL
My 600 was end of December of the last year, and had no fan. Maybe they ran out of them.
Thanks for the video! Is there a website that sells a kit for this? All I'm finding are places I have to go down and select each gromet/gasket individually.
Do this work for the 750 1996 us well?
I'm not sure of the difference between the two. But the tolerances should be the same. Good luck with your project.
96 is a different setup download or buy the Haynes manual
Next time maybe you can list parts that you actually used to do work? That would be more helpful...
Sorry... this is one of early videos where I didn't list the parts. Will most definitely do it next time.
I can tell you I ordered most of my parts from bikebandit.com
hey I have a 2005 katana 600, what does the vacuum diaphragm look like that you took off, because mine never came with one, and was wondering where I could get one because I need it for my carb.
+Garrett Chatterton it's the peace I removed over the valve cover. Run through the video you'll see it.
would this fix low compression?
+Deeforeva Knight no... new piston rings are required to fix that problem.
Fix-n-It Yea im having starting issues it went from no spark. change the signal generator. plugs are sparking now, but it wont fire unless constantly hold the start button for like 2 or 3 min (changed starter motor to) when it does turn over gotta hold the throttle so it wont die. 😔😔😔😔
+Deeforeva Knight wow... that could be a fuel problem. Or could be low compression. Pick up a compression tester kit and find out.
Fix-n-It i was sayin it could be the float adjustment i did lol but I'll do the compression test friday. if that dont pan out guy wants to sell me a 750 cc to put in it sigh.
Fix-n-It also when we i spray starting fluid in the air box it dosnt work lol but check out my vid on my page and see was it was doin b4 i put it in da shop.
Are the 750s the same as the 600s?
I assume you have found this out by now but yes. The 750s are the same (Excluding some years which are shim type adjustment)
Frank Parker 750's were always locknut and screw....'98 on 600 also.
fourelmscars I stand corrected. Many thanks for that information
10MM is a hell alot of clearance......lol
It's been a few years since I did that video. I think the 10mm is in reference the the wrench or I ment to say 0.010mm
@@Fixnit14 you just misspoke and I was just giving you a hard time.... good video otherwise.... :)
Thanks... I'll have more videos up in the future. Super busy with life stuff. Thanks for the sub and comment. 🤙😉
saves wear and tear on the valve springs and cam lobes.
