  • Dean Wilson has had a career in Motocross and Supercross that has seen him a part of many factory teams, and the programs that come with them. As a part of the KTM Group, Deano spent multiple seasons working with legendary trainer Aldon Baker at the Bakers Factory in Florida.
While many have been critical of the Bakers Factory in the past, it is extremely hard to argue with the results… Dean Wilson gives his take on the legendary facility.

I think the biggest thing with baker's program is potential for burnout for some riders. I wouldn't think tomacs program would be less intense or less science-based, but just giving a legit mental break from time to time is probably a necessary thing for a rider and to also not scare away future riders. Baker's factory makes being a pro racer look miserable

The Baker’s Factory hasn’t really produced much in the last several years. The dominance of Yamaha and Honda looks like it will continue into the future with their fresh crop of young talent coming up and Kawasaki is not to far behind. Baker’s Factory is going to be history before you know it.

Every rider is different and cookie cutter training isn’t the model. I mean how the fuck do you not allow a rider suffering in whoops too work on riding whoops…. That’s asinine…. Jase, I love your podcasts! Great to hear Deano on the show. I really liked Dean when he was just a small guy on Pro Circuit. Then the kid hit a huge growth spurt! He grew up and got tall and filled out! I seen him in Oakland and he was tall and filled out. I’ve always been a big fan of Dean and I felt bad after the Roczen thing cause I sent him a DM and was pretty mean. Then later that night I wrote him a long apology. It really wasn’t his fault! I just really didn’t like Webb and wanted Roczen to win and I let my emotions get the best of me and my mouth wrote some bad checks. Lol Deano is a class act! People don’t see how much he gives back to this sport! Spending his time off at a local track scoping out kids who could use a better bike and gear and then spending his own money to surprise some kid with a new bike and gear! That’s awesome! His filmer gets his van stolen with his
bike and everything inside and Deano goes out and hooks him up with a new 450 and gear! He works his ass off and Bobby and Husky have to be proud of him. All the injuries he’s gone thru and always comes back and fights! His dad is a kick in the ass too! When he went privateer and had his dad wrenching for him his little pit area at A-1 had more people around it than some of the big factory guys! That’s shows how much of a fan favorite he really is! I got to talk to him at A-1 and Oakland year after year and the guy is super nice and funny as hell! Great podcast with Deano and you gotta have him back again sometime.

The company may want everyone and everything in one place, but if you're not excited to go to the office, or excited to work within a repetitive program, your mental (determination, health, etc.) may fade. Every athlete needs individualized training. It is an insecure and maybe psychotic person who thinks and trains otherwise. Yes, it’s good to have someone push you into mental toughness but there are limits. Having a significant background in psychology and understanding humans, more often than not “less is more”. There are examples of this throughout all aspects of history and life. As someone who coached baseball, I viewed and trained everyone as an individual and was successful at it. If the person had athletic ability my entire job was to get them out of their head and I was damn good about it because I genuinely cared about “the individual”. And yes, I did race MX back in the 80’s so I’m not talking out my ass. People are people and the mind is the mind no matter what sport.

Not sure if you're familiar at all with wrestlers and the way they train. It is freaking HARD! I'm talking NCAA wrestling programs, some high school but you look at Penn State, their program has dominated the past decade with Chael Sonnen as the head coach. All their guys talk about the practices where it is just a screw off kind of deal. The practice, cutting weight, etc. is so intense that this program has realized they need to blow off steam. You can't go 24/7 hard! Some guys are wired like that, maybe Dungey is but most people like your Jason Andersons and some of those guys are willing to work hard but they need to play hard, too. You can't push most people that hard EVERY day!!
Not everyone can be an Aldon Baker or Mike Brown or Ryan Dungey or Eli Tomac. These guys seem to be able to just grind and grind and grind!

Want to be an elite... do what nobody else is willing to do. Yes you can take a natural fat kid and make him an elite athlete who becomes a champion. Discipline always wins.
Look at Tom Brady compared to Cam Newton.

Natural talent without massive drive rarely wins championships. I was a gifted alpine ski racer but had a string of injuries in hs, including a near fatal ski collision my sophomore year. I went through a mental change after my accident and stopped doing dry land training and tried to rely on talent. You can't come off the couch and win elite FIS (federation of international skiing) races no matter how talented you are. If you can't squat 350 lbs your legs will give out during a 2 min 30 sec downhill race going upwards of 80+ mph.

You don't have to be a genius in motocross when there is little to no testing for performance enhancing drug use.
