      @@Kuralai95 Interesting...It's different for me actually. I don't remember having a particular strong impression about Oswin other than she was super cute and had a tragic (but "good") ending, as Shane commented. I felt the same in Snowmen. I enjoyed her episodes with Eleven but still didn't feel like I had any particularly strong feelings about her, but I was really satisfied with the story they told together about the "girl who dies". But it wasn't until 12 came along that I grew to REALLY love Clara. Through her relationship with 12, she grew to be favorite companion, and theirs my favorite doctor-companion pair. Of course, now looking back at all Clara stuff pre-12, I have super biased lenses and think she's super amazing and beautiful and ground-breaking by just standing there and breathing...

    I always hated the "2000 years is nothing compared to giving you up" line Yes Amy means it to reiterate how much she loves Rory but it just seems like Rory is belittled and his amazing feat meant nothing. A different line could have been "You waited...2000 years for me Rory,imagine how it must feel to give that all up to give you a better chance" Also Rory mentions knowing she's infertile and he's clearly till in love with her so they could have just sat down, discussed adoption and hell win win for Amy since she inexplicably became a model last series. Idk it just seemed like a way to tease people to tune into Asylum Of the Daleks.

    • @bookworm598
      @bookworm598 4 года назад +12

      Not being able to have children can be a heart breaking, especially for Amy who was basically sterilized against her will which must have been traumatic. This scene could have been written better, but the whole idea of it makes sense. While adoption is an option, most people who want children want their own flesh and blood. It's a lot more complicated than just sitting down and saying "let's just adopt a kid". Especially since their first child was taken away from them right after she was born, I can understand why Amy would feel like she wouldnt be able to give Rory the life he always wanted

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 5 лет назад +36

      Vulcan was the actual name given to a hypothesised planet in our solar system during the 19th century (it supposedly orbited between Mercury and the Sun and was proposed to explain inaccuracies in the prediction of Mercury's orbit that were later explained by Einstein's general theory of relativity). There are maps of the solar system from the 1840s with Vulcan marked on them so it seems likely both Trek and Who got the "alien planet" idea from that same source (Calvin's close with his Greek pantheon comment as the planet itself was named after the Roman god of fire - the word Volcano comes from there too).

    I can see how traumatic it would’ve been for Amy to find out she couldn’t provide kids for Rory and herself. Yeah, Rory showed a lot of commitment by guarding her for 2k years but that only makes it worse for her. She probably felt even more undeserving of him so her idea of letting him go was solidified. That being said, being married, she should talk about the issues together first before making major decisions like divorce. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Spiridon was from _Planet of the Daleks_ (1973).
    Kembel was from _The Daleks' Master Plan_ (1965-66).
    Aridius was from _The Chase_ (1965).
    Vulcan was from _The Power of the Daleks_ (1966). Star Trek started just 2 months earlier so the name was probably a coincidence.

    What I did not get on first viewing was the triangle joke.
    "What is the noise?" - the Dalek asked, talking about the music.

    While I'm not the biggest fan of the Amy/Rory conflict in this (not the content of it, specifically - while adoption is always an option, I know it can still be a difficult thing to face that you can't have kids on your own for many people, especially when like Amy it's happened through trauma, and she already has abandonment issues - but the way it feels very much like their subplot that was thrown in just for this episode to give them something to do) I do like almost everything else about this episode. The Oswin story and the direction and cinematography of it specifically. I remember when this episode first came out. It was... certainly an experience, for many reasons I won't get into here.
    I kind of agree with Eric that there was definitely more they could have done with it, but I'm also happy they let the Oswin story take centre stage over that. Also, I really love her and the Doctor's back and forth (and really glad the crew enjoyed that). Ultimately, I think this story just throws a lot at you, and I think more works than what doesn't work. (I have however never been a fan of the human dalek puppets.)
    I'd completely forgotten the Vulcan thing, and when I rewatched I also thought it was a Star Trek reference, but nope! Cool to know.
    Another thing about the discussion: Nice save, Aaron. That's all I'll say about that.
    S7 might not be a favourite of mine, but even so I'm really looking forward to the reactions - besides, BW reaction have made me enjoy episodes more in the past that I didn't use to like, so we'll see if that holds true here as well. :D

      JojoInSpace I disagree with you're thoughts at least with the baby part. For a lot of couples it's hard to take especially for women who can't give birth or natural child birth. A lot of women can't handle it and Marriages fall apart. These are stats and I thought it was very realistic. I don't like the divorce part though because I would think Amy and Rory would have been strong enough by now to handle it. And yes I know a couple of familys in the mission field who have adopted kids from other company's who were homeless. I love season 7 and still think it's one of the best. I thought the twist was weak though and I predicted it half way threw like Calvin did lol.

    • @TheRedLittleGirl
      @TheRedLittleGirl 5 лет назад

      I'm... not sure you do disagree with me though? My point was that while I get the emotional aspects of it, and that Amy's response here are very real and reflect real issues people have, I thought the way the story was used in the episode itself was weirdly done from a writing POV. It seems you think that I didn't think that it was a valid emotional response - which is the opposite to what I wrote.

    Rory waited thousands of years to see Amy again, blew up a Cyberman fleet in one of this show’s most badass moments to save her, and after all that...
    Amy divorces him because she can’t have kids. Kind of bullshit.
    Even if you didn’t want to adopt, all you had to do was SAY SOMETHING.

      They really dont write it very well, I truly think that after everything he did for her, she no longer felt worthy of being his wife. He made her go threw all of that and couldnt even give him children. she went through a very traumatic experience and they dont really address PTSD correctly. I think it the only thing the Rory/Amy act lacks is a proper amount of time to grieve.

    SPOILERS
    IN the UK it was announced that Jenna Coleman would be the new companion around Easter 2012 but the series didnt start until September 2012. The biggest twist was meta... How can she be the new companion when she was dead? This series was also split in half. Everything up to The Angels Take Manhattan was shown in September/October the Snowman shown at Christmas further compounding the mystery and The Bells of Saint John was shown in March 2013, but we didn't get an answer until the finale in May.

    If I heard correctly, at the end of the Narnia Xmas ep, Eric mentioned something about the Ponds having more children... and I was like, "Oh fuck..." and thought about this episode.

    Yes, Vulcan is named after the Roman god Vulcan. There was speculation in folklore that there could perhaps be a planet in the same orbit as Earth - but always hidden from us by being on the other side of the sun... called Vulcan. The idea was very fashoinable in the 1960s. So both ST and DW used the idea at almost exactly the same time... Both versions of Vulcan appearing in 1966 episodes of each series (I think only weeks apart.) ST wasn't shown in the UK until 1969 and obviously DW wasn't shown in the US until the 1970s.

    This is a decent episode that's unfortunately dragged down by the Amy/Rory drama that just feels kind of forced. If they wanted to address the aftermath of what happened with River they should have done it in series 6. As it is they waited too long and now it just feels out of nowhere and as I said above forced. I think Oswin makes up for it though as she's great. Not a fan of the Dalek's hidden in human bodies thing, that just feels silly to me.

    I think this is a good premiere episode . The Amy-Rory subplot definitely does seem manufactured to add a bit more drama to the episode but the explanation aswell as Karen Gillians and Arthur Darvill’s performances sell it .
    Otherwise ,I do like the rest of the episode .it’s nice to see different versions of the Daleks but the highlight is Oswin ‘s banter with The Doctor and Rory , Jenna Coleman was so good and I wish we could have seen more of her ...

    Eh...mm...don't wanna be too self entitled here...but i think a woman finding out she can't have children can potentially, if not necessarily, break her quite a bit. And as is not a points based competition, i doubt the fact her husband waited thousands of years for her would soften the blow in any possible way. So, well...what do i know right?, i just think is well portrayed and is usually this errors in communication that strand couples, regardless of what any of them did before, grand gestures included. Pretty realistic for Doctor Who if you ask me.

    • @TheKat12364
      @TheKat12364 3 года назад +1

      They have so much PTSD and yeah they technically know where their daughter is now, that doesnt change everything that happened. Kidnapping, sterilization, etc. Losing a child often pulls couples apart. I think it is both well portrayed well somehow also not explaining it enough.

    Davros is the same species as a Dalek (see Genesis of the Daleks) so of course he could use his cells to make Daleks. I think a normal dalek would not convert even a genius human due to their genetic superiority thing. But the crazies in the asylum, yes. You guys figured out Oswin was a dalek! I didn’t, but I had a reason I didn’t get it. I’ll explain later.

    I appreciate Aaron was trying not to spoil Clara, but that was more than the BBC ever did. So for the full experience, you have to know that Jenna Coleman had already been announced as the new companion before this was aired. So when she popped up here, and then died, a nation went, "Huh?". In the past bit parts in Who had been recast as main characters, but not like this.

    I thought Amy's line about giving Rory up was powerful, because he did do something out of the ordinary, but with the prospect of being reunited with her, while she was going to do a simpler act, but in a more selfless way, because she knew she was going to suffer from it. It's also kinda implied that she didn't exactly plan to make Rory leave her, it was just an unconcious decision that made them grow apart.
