    Guarantee that ring didn't just fall behind the sofa; it was strategically placed there.

    • @FreedomWriter3
      @FreedomWriter3 9 лет назад +111

      J.R. M I knew that the moment Yule Mae moved the couch and found it. Something felt off. Hilly knew she was desperate for money and Yule Mae just happens to find a "forgotten" diamond ring? No. That was *too* convenient. And of course it was a trap.

    • @Bloombaby99
      @Bloombaby99 7 лет назад +86

      FreedomWriter3 In the book, Hilly lies saying it was a priceless, expensive ring that Yule May stole but it wasn't. Hilly's mother, Mrs. Walter, gave Hilly the ring for a birthday present but when Hilly had the ring appraised, she found out it was worthless and she never wore it again (that alone should give you more of a glimpse of her relationship with her mother and her past as the book mentions very little about her side of the story). But how would Yule May know it wasn't worth anything? Hilly set that trap and caught that poor girl like a possum.

    • @FreedomWriter3
      @FreedomWriter3 7 лет назад +44

      Bloombaby99 That was fucked up. Hilly never even suspected that Yule Mae was a thief in the first place. She just placed it there to be mean. She knew the woman was desperate for money. A mother will do anything for her kids, and Hilly knew that since she's also a mom. Hilly was a devil. The only redeeming quality about her was that she loved her children.

      J.R. M funny you should mention the husband. He divorced Hilly and married a black woman in the novel, and Hilly lost her spot as queen bee of the hive. I think he got custody of the kids too! Correct me if i’m wrong, though, cause it’s been awhile since i last read it xD

    God doesn't give charity to those who are well and able? Well it's not like Yule Mae was just sitting on her couch doing nothing and expecting someone to just give her the money! She said she'd work until her debt was paid off. Hilly could have given her that money. I'm almost willing to guarantee that Hilly's mom, Celia or maybe even Elizabeth would have loaned her the money. Hilly's actions were despicable and after all that, she still had the nerve to call herself a Christian. And God does give to those who are "well and able". They're called blessings. Something Hilly probably knows nothing about.

    Un-freaking-believable. And it was only $75. Yes America thats how CHEAP college was back then per person. Its not like the Holbrook's couldn't afford to loan her the money (maybe not today given how expensive tuition is). Sigh, I dont know whats more infuriating about Hilly. Her racism, her arrogance or her ignorance, take your pick. And whats sad is in real 1960's Mississippi Hilly's character wasn't unique, there were hundreds of"Hilly's" all over the deep south.

    • @myriadd6272
      @myriadd6272 9 лет назад +27

      The tuition fee wasn't $75, yule mae and her husband were SHORT $75 on one of the fees (which in total was probably quite a lot) after they'd been saving up for years.

    • @19EHF
      @19EHF 9 лет назад +8

      myriad d I know, im saying the fact that they were only short $75 meant that back then if someone who worked as a maid saved money for years, they could still have enough to send one kid to a good college. Nowadays tuition is up soo much that even if you worked at a decent middle class job you wouldn't be short $75 you would probably be short thousands of dollars. College WAS cheap back then to the point where you could work as a maid and still make enough to send a kid to college assuming you saved over the years. If you worked as a domestic today and saved up enough for your kid or two you would be short thousands of dollars not $75. Now I know all about inflation and college tuition isnt the only thing that has gone up over the decades, but try working as a domestic today, save up money for a college fund (lets say for about 20 years) and see if your short by just $75

      @Ann Clark Hilly and her husband are well matched. But I think he's under Hilly's thumb. In the book after the book of the maids stories is released Hilly has her husband phone Leory's (Minny's husband) boss and fire him. When Leroy asks why his boss tells him because of Leory's (insert racial slur) wife. Aibileen realises that Minny making Skeeter put the pie story in did indeed keep them safe from losing their jobs and any retribution but Minny paid the price because it escalated the situation between her and Hilly. After Hilly threatens Aibileen with jail she tells her that she'll be calling Johnny to tell him to fire Minny because Johnny listens to her and thats when Aibileen snaps and stands up to Hilly. Johnny actually thanks Minny and tells her how grateful he is that she took such good care of Celia and she has a job for life.

    This is the scene I cite when I try to explain to people the type of experiences I have at work. If you just analyzed the script, one may say that Hilly was right, in that she is teaching the woman to work hard and earn her own money. But what is missed is the context. There is this undertone of discrimination that come from a very mean place, that cannot be explained rationally, only irrationally as does the maid by her bodily response to just start crying. I''ve been through this so many times, and I think its times to start calling it what it is: Implicit Racism

      What Hilly does to Yule Mae in the book is much worse. The ring Yule Mae stole was a gift from Mrs Walters and Hilly had it appraised and it was worthless so she never wore it again. Hilly uses her influence with the trial judge (Hilly is friends with the judges wife) to get Yule Mae a heavy fine that her and her husband have to use their twins college tuition money to pay it off and the judge gives her the maximum sentence for stealing and sentences her to four years in prison! Thats why the maids changed their minds and decided to let Skeeter intetview them because they're so angry about what Hilly did to Yule Mae who is well liked and respected. She's also a well educated woman more so than Hilly and Elizabeth who dropped out as soon as they found their wealthy men she was close to graduating college when she dropped out to get married.

    From Chapter 18 of 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings' by Maya Angelou: "'As I understand it, charity vaunteth not itself. Is not puffed up.' 'Charity don't go around saying "I give you food and I give you clothes and by rights you ought to thank me." Charity don't say, "Because I give you a job, you got to bend your knee to me." It don't say, "Because I pays you what you due, you got to call me master." It don't ask me to humble myself and belittle myself. That ain't what Charity is.......Charity is simple. Charity is poor. Charity is plain.........How can you claim to be my brother and hate me? Is that Charity? How can you claim to be my sister and despise me? Is that supposed to be Charity? How can you claim to be my friend and misuse and wrongfully abuse me? Is that Charity? Oh, my children, I stopped my here to tell you, to open your heart and let Charity reign. Forgive your enemies for His sake. Show the Charity that Jesus was speaking of to this sick old world. It has need of the charitable giver. And now I repeat the words of the Apostle Paul, and "now abideth faith, hope and charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.'"
    Yule May to Hilly: Yes, I'll thank you for this so that when I read that you ate Minny shit, I can laugh as long and loud as I like and not feel any sense of loyalty to you who wouldn't even help me send my sons to school.

      In the book Hilly gets her come uppance. The ladies are done with her by the end and plan to vote her out as Junior League President only Elizabeth and a few others stay loyal to Hilly and most them do work out that Hilly is the one in the pie story lol her husband also loses his campaign to become a Senator.
      Also thanks to Minny Hilly will suffer for the rest of her life. Can you imagine the utter disgust and shame Hilly must be feeling living with the knowledge that she not only ate two slices of Minny's shit but she actually enjoyed the pie and complimented Minny on how good it was! That must really fuck with her head everyday especially living with the fear of people finding out she ate her maids shit and having to constantly deny it. I'd say thats karma paying her back for sure lol Minny is a genius she not only gave Hilly her just desserts literally but she fucked with Hilly's head so bad that woman will have a lifetime of psychological torture! 🤣🤣 I wouldn't live with that constantly in the back of my mind

    Not really.. This movie actually should be commended for not painting all white people as evil.
    Skeeter, Celie, Hilly's mom, the young girl and other characters all showed compassion towards African Americans. The film didn't focus on race wars it just told the story of what it was like to be apart of the help as an African American woman. You see black & white characters interact with each other kindly throughout the entire film.
    The film's only true racist was Hilly.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 3 года назад +1

      That's real rich of Hilly to just rip up the check because at that point, she's got nobody except her husband, a few followers, but everyone's now walking away from her. So she should be a bit grateful someone gave her a cut, AT ALL.
      Honestly, after learning who Hilly is, from getting Yule May arrested and denying her college funds, to attempting to sue Skeeter and Aibileen, if I was one of those maids or Skeeter, I'd say "Go ahead, Hilly! Have me arrested! Sue me! My home is probably worth $100 - $500! What's $500 to you Hilly? It NOTHING. Well it means A LOT TO ME. And I'd still rather lose everything than lose my integrity.".
      Some socialite Hilly's running. Just listening to her even with her campaigning to be the city's Junior League President states what a waste of time she sees this all to be. I mean why waste or time being so honest and moral when you can be so much richer being a complete narcissist? But hey, what would the maids know huh? To Hilly, they're just some dumb, cleaning ladies. But I've got some news for Hilly: I bet some of these maids didn't come to Jackson Mississippi on foot.

    Scenes like this seem horrible and cruel....but they are so powerful. They remind us of the wrong we committed and it's a dark part of our history. But because of these actors stunning performances they remind us not to let go of the past and also to learn from it moving forward. The fact that it makes us all sick to our stomach shows us how far we have come from discrimination and segregation.

  • @Kaboomboo

    I think there's a subtle implied detail y'all are missing here. Hilly doesn't have to loan her the money. In essence a loan was being asked for and she declined. Nothing wrong with that. However Hilly is not one to let the opportunity of free work come her way. $75 is about 2 weeks worth of work (implied by how much Abileen says she makes at the beginning of the film). So Hilly could easily charge her crippling interest and probably get months of work out of her for much less.
    So what I'm getting at here is that Hilly most likely doesn't have the money. Or at least most of it. She's likely spending enough to keep up appearances and would rather hide behind the "God doesn't give charity" curtain that admit she doesn't have the ready cash. I say this because her friend was being chastised by her husband over the new bathroom for Abileen. None of these women are really as well off as they seem. They're simply trying to keep their heads above water to keep up with each other. Including Hilly.

    I see Hilly's point. 'God don't give charity to the well and able'. Jesus said 'the healthy have no need of doctors'. The maid has worked hard and saved up a lot for her sons college education and the maid said it will be an 'either for' situation: one son goes but the other doesn't go to college. But that doesn't mean the second son will never go. Its just the case they haven't got enough money and need to work and save more. But what's wrong with the second son taking a gap year of two. He could do private studying and gain more knowledge so when the time comes when the maid has saved enough for the other son's tuition fees he would go to college, he be a few steps ahead having more knowledge and insight into his subject area than his fellow first years. But more important consider Hilly's nature. This loan and its incurred debt is an informal agreement and thus has no legal standing. What's to say that hilly will try to extort more money than what the maid borrowed or accuse the maid of stealing the money. If the maid tries to dispute it she has no legal backing and the law and society's norms and values would be on Hilly's side because she is white. If I were in the maid's situation, a loan from hilly is more trouble that its worth.
