- I've barely spoken about The Last Guardian on my channel ever since its reveal 7 years ago. It's time I broke my silence on my thoughts leading up to its impending release later this year.

So now that you have played The Last Guardian, what do you think of the game?
I notice from the shelf behind you in this video that you have a nice collection of Ico and SotC merchandise. Could you do a video about this stuff please? Be really interested to see each piece in closeup.

I actually played Last Guardian at E3 this year... and sadly it doesn't really play like a dream. It's a bit of a chore to herd Trico and climb around, some camera problems as well. Then again, it's not like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were perfect in terms of controls or from a techincal point of view. I'm sure The Last Guardian will have as much heart and atmosphere than the other two games though, and that's what matters.
Somehow i feel like the last guardian is not going to be that good. From all that i've seen, it doesn't seem to have that same atmosphere than the previous games did. Shadow of the colossus is my favorite game of all time but i'm not really feeling this one. Btw love your vids finngamer, greetings from a fellow finn.

finngamer, bro, i'm pretty sure pete's not looking for any input on the game. one of his main points was that he would want to experience it himself without other peoples' ideas put into his head. no offense.
Another great video Pete. I think one of the lessons I've learned as I've gotten older is that I just don't allow myself to fall for the hype of video games anymore. The less I know about a games release, the more better off I'll be because of it. I don't like knowing everything about a specific game before I play it. I'm not one of those types of gamers that will freak out over spoilers, but in this day and age its so easy to get access to so much information, that we are having instances where gamers are finding out about games getting made before the developer/publisher releases any formal information about it. I haven't played Ico or shadow of the Colossus but they are games that do interest me, but maybe the fact that I haven't played them and i have no knowledge on both those games may help me enjoy the last guardian. It will still be a while before I get a chance to play it, but I hope for the most part it meets and exceeds your expectations.
Hype disappointment doesn't really bother me too much. I loved skyward sword, but I didn't love it anywhere near where I thought I would. It was still a great game. I don't often hate things though, so it might be a product of my Optimism.
Great video Pete. I couldn't help it - I've hyped myself up each time since its announcement in 2009. This latest delay was a big blow. I really hope it still comes out in December.
Your thoughts about the Last Gaurdian is how I feel about Resident evil 7 as a long time fan of the series it looks like it will be good. I agree with you though with games being spoiled before you get to play them I was really disappointed when playing Uncharted 4 because someone spoiled the crash bandicoot part seeing that I have so many memories of playing it with my Mother back it the day

Great video Pete. Your points on hype ruining this industry couldn't be more true. People get so excited for video games these days only for those games to not meet their high expectations. It just causes so much uncecessary drama, and it hurts so many games and the developers that make them. I am also someone who has seen very little on the Last Guardian, so I think i'll be fine once I start playing it.
Pete is probably my favorite gaming related RUclips channel. He doesn't do it for the money (I don't know if he actually gets paid for it) he does it because it's what he loves.

I think that would be cool, but I feel like he would be too stressed over making more videos so he could get paid. If he stressed he would end up making stuff that aren't up to par with his own standards, and we don't want that.
Logan. That's it. I agree with you that Pete just likes to upload a video when he feels like it and doesn't see it as a job more of something he does whilst he is caught up in the hobby. I would still like to see a video or two per week. If he could be bothered to do it, it ould pay for his new purchases so everybody wins. Who cares though really? I love checking out Pete's videos, if he doesn't really want o do them then whatever. I totally agree it wouldn't be as good if he just tried to hit constant deadlines releaseing vids.

I actually just have a gut feeling that this game will not disappoint. I don't know why. On paper it sounds like it's a disaster waiting to happen but I just feel like this will be a very special game.
I was ( still am ) a huge fan of Kenji Eno. So I was always keeping up with all the people that worked at WARP. Fumito Ueda ( D--Director's Cut, Enemy Zero ) seems to be the only one to rise from the ashes of WARP & make a huge name for himself. So I knew about "ICO" when it was still going to be a PS1 game. And of course I just about lost it when I saw a trailer for "Shadow Of The Colossus" prior to it's release. I love both games. However, I would have to choose "Shadow Of The Colossus" over "ICO". Now, I ask myself the same question you did. Will "The Last Guardian" become my number 1 favorite modern video game of all time & knock my previous choice to the number 2 spot? If I was to guess, I would say YES. But I won't truly know until I get to play the entire game......many times. I will agree with you that SONY obviously knows they have a very special ground-breaking game with "The Last Guardian". That's why they are allowing all these set backs. They want this very special game to be as perfect as it can be no matter the cost or the delays. Fumito Ueda is a perfectionist. He doesn't want his newest masterpiece released until Trico performs exactly the way he & his team had originally intended. Will this game even make it's newest December 6 release date? We shall see. The only thing we know for certain is, "The Last Guardian" won't be released until all the bugs are removed. Except for the pretty butterflies. lol
I need to still play Ico, I played Shadow of the Colossus a few years ago and then again a year ago with the HD collection. I love that game so much. This is one of only 3 games I'm excited for. I've been really disappointing in games recently and I'm hoping this game will will rekindle my love for video games again. The last game I played and loved was Undertale on the PC and fell in love with that game. I'm probably going to shed some tears while playing it. Just the fact I'm going to be able to means so much to me.
You have just about two months to stock up on tissue. I think many of us are going to need some. "The Last Guardian" is going to be an emotional & jaw-dropping experience. lol

I have the same feeling about FFXV. After I played the two demos I stopped watching trailers to go in blind.
I'm still excited for it, even if it doesn't live up to expectations. I wish them luck during this stressful crunch time.

It honestly should have been released on PS3 originally, and eventually released on PS4. The reason I say that is mainly because Shadow of the Colossus represented a transition from PS2 to PS3, it was a game that represented the PS2 handing the torch over to the PS3, yeah there was God of War 1 and 2, but Shadow of the Colossus was the PS2's way of showing us that devs reached the absolute limit of the PS2 and it was a technical marvel as well. Thats honestly what The Last Guardian should have been along with The Last of Us on PS3.

I have known about the name "The last Guardian" for quite a while, but I never really took the time to find out what all the hype was about, never watched any trailers, not that I can remember at least. I was going to look it up after this video, but when you said that there was something in the last trailer that could be a huge spoiler I decided that I will just wait until it comes out, and play it without any idea of what it will have in store for me. If this turns out to be something special, I thank you for helping me make that decision.
I played Ico back when the HD remastered version came out. I remember watching your videos knowing how well you praised the game but went in playing not knowing too much, still one of the most addicting games I have ever played and one of my top favs.
If ico is your favorite game then it always will be, the memories of the moment in time has alot to do with that being your favorite game
The Last Delay. My sentiments exactly, you've voiced how I feel about it perfectly. It takes a considerable amount of energy to not spoil anything for yourself in today's instant gratification age. Plus, I want that Rick Taylor Splatterhouse figure!
9:10 Definitely feel you there, Pete. I've already seen major Persona 5 spoilers almost two days ago and the game isn't even out yet. I envy whoever can somehow make it to the western February launch without learning.
ICO and SotC remain to be two of my favorite games of all-time. I've been waiting patiently since the announcement in 2009. I know that it will be one to remember for years, like the two games before it. I'm really curious who's composing the soundtrack?
believe it or not i'm happy about the delay because when it comes out then school will be out.. so i feel like i'll be able to really take in the game.... i'll have to try and get it day one and stay away from the Internet around that time!!!
You might need longer than Christmas vacation to complete the game. I have a feeling that "The Last Guardian" will end up taking anywhere from 50 to 100 hours to complete......that's if you plan to explore all the areas in the game including the places not required in order to finish the game. I think you will have to play several times in order to explore areas not available the first time. This would most likely be do to the fact that some areas are going to require that Trico is able to fly in order to reach them. I don't believe he will be able to fly in your first play through. If I'm correct, then you can keep making Trico stronger & his wings bigger with each game. I really hope this is true. It goes without saying that most people that end up loving this game are going to want to play it over & over. It would be so nice if we are given new goals to reach by playing again. Including possibly multiple endings???

It would be great if Steven Geraghty did a song during the end credits of "The Last Guardian". Of course his voice won't sound the same now as it did in 2001. But for nostalgic purposes, it would be nice. Does anyone think "The Last Guardian" will have a song with English lyrics during the end credits?

Yeah, and The Last Guardian was not supossed to release "8 years ago", but rather 5 years ago.
Pete please don't ignore the Limited Edition it is one of the most beautiful sets you can purchase. I ordered mine, but they have stopped pre-orders at certain retailers and it's a pretty penny to purchase but it looks so unique.
I am not so worried about the hype i have for last quardian ( already preordered the special edition). I am gonna take it easy and enjoy it, kept myself away from any spoilers. What i am sooo worried about it's the fact that i am completely overhyped with the new zelda BOTW .. I allowed myself to watch so many videos, nintendo show us so many thinks, that i am almost scared that it is going to ruin my experience.. Whats your though in that specific game Pete? Please share it with us in a video.

Found out it was the second trico they show near the end. Dont know how it was really a spoiler tho since without playing a game we dont know anything about it.
Ico is such an amazing game. I remember unlocking the hidden 2 player mode and playing through it again with a friend. Great times. I also loved Journey that evoked similar feelings for me.
Also, please make a video on your thoughts on the changing of the video game industry (with games getting spoiled on game sites and overhype). I really do miss when all I had was either a few screenshots in gaming magazines or going in blind.
The re-release of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus paired with the original release date of Last Guardian made me buy a PS3. What do think about the influence of those games on Zelda, Breath of the Wild?
its not just gaming that hypes up and spoils with trailers it also like that with movies aswell. its sad but it obviously helps to sell and thats more important to them than releasing a game that nobody know much about specially something that isnt mainstream like the last guardian

Hey Pete the approach you are taking about not getting hyped for games and not searching or looking for every single bit of info about a game, I think its the perfect approach to enjoy gaming nowdays, I myself do that too, I'm a gamer and I do want to get excited and surprised, also not believing all the crap hype...I think its the best way to have a clear point of view and the best personal opinion about a game, and really enjoy it 100%.
And I do must thank you about not revealing the spoiler since I myself havent watch a single Last Guaradian trailer, I jsut want to play it, and maybe just read 1 or 2 things about it.

As Shadow of the Colossus (Ico a close 2nd) being my fave game of all time, I'm super hyped for TLG. I completely skipped the last gen of consoles (been playing on PC), but I'm now thinking of getting a PS4 just for this game. Possibly a PS4 Pro. That comes out in November, I believe? Super duper hyped!

Have you watched the new "Pete's Dragon"? It didn't do well theatrically. But it was a good movie. You will be reminded of "The Last Guardian" during the first 15 to 20 minutes when it's just Pete & Elliot bonding & romping around before any other human characters are brought into the story.
8:50 I know exactly what you mean and I couldn't agree more, I'm so sick of people not respecting the sanctity of surprises anymore. It's not just video games anymore, tv shows and movies are absolutely outrageous in the way they wont even try to surprise you. It's not just the reporters and reviewers, you know Spiderman is going to live through Infinity War because they have another 2 films planned for him after the 4th avengers movie! It's absolutely outrageous.
ICO was awesome. Blew my mind too. Shadow of the Colossus is my all-time favorite game actually. Beat it 9 or more times in a row. Played through all 6 various game modes and beat it another 3 or 4 times more to get my stamina meter large enough to scale the outside of the temple to get to the secret garden. Love that game. Magic pure magic. I hope the love for the Last Guardian doesn't get lost as it transcends across eras of console hardware and the shifts in gaming culture. Galleon for the xbox was released way after its hype was dead, and consequently the game sold poorly, in spite of the fact that it actually was a pretty cool game.
Last of Us is the game that took the #1 spot for me after playing it for the first time. I have the ico and soc hd edition still sealed, really need to play them someday.
Bah. I cancelled my preorder after this delay. All the recent reports say the controls and camera are trash.

Clunky controls and odd camera angles are kind of a staple of the series. To me, it feels like they want to keep you off balanced. As if it's supposed to be sort of awkward to stumble through. That could just be my perception, but it was never really and issue for me as far as immersion goes.

Exactly how I feel with Zelda Breath of the Wild.. it's so hard to avoid footage and info about the game. All the Zelda's I've played so far I'll have seen 1 gameplay trailer for each game and that's it I go in blind after that.
Wow, great video!!! I subscribed you because you're talking about some of MY fav games of all-time as well. I'm with you in the fact that playing that ICO demo on a PS2 was unlike anything I have seen before. I couldn't believe my eyes it was on a PS2 it just looked so incredible and still has better water physics than games on PS4.
Ico & SotC are simply incredible gaming experiences and I for one expect BIG things from The Last Guardian. I know the visuals and sound design will be top notch and couldn't care less if they're not at the top of their game on PS4...I care more about the emotional story than anything else. SotC and ICO's endings were timeless.
lol "artsy games"? that term sounds rather demeaning in a world of 90% of videogames that are FPS, hack and slash, no story driven games. I hope there are more games like Journey / Last Guardian that are focused on story and art direction and not leveling up.
Everything you've said regarding TLG reflects my exact thoughts and feelings about FFXV. In this current age of social media domination: it's so difficult to separate yourself from hype and pre conceived opinions about a game that hasn't even landed! Unfortunately, being a pessimist makes me wonder if Sony are more concerned about gaining from the Christmas trade, influencing them to release in early December... but I'm not a marketing expert, I'm just making assumptions.

Remember when I first played the ICO family, loved every bit. When I found out abt the last guardian like, 10 years ago I was so stocked. I nearly cried when it was shown at last year's E3, but hearing about this delay? Will this game ever be released :/

I played "Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons" & I really liked it. I only got stuck one time in the entire game. It was the part where you have to put the sheep inside the wheel so that the sheep can spin it. For some reason it took me forever to figure that out. I have a feeling some of the puzzles in "The Last Guardian" won't be easy. I'm so ready for the challenge!!!
I played that demo over 1000 times climbing in the windmill over and over amazing game! I got it on day release!
I started getting hyped a few weeks ago when I realized the release was so close... and then they fucking moved it two months forward.

Btw, I dont want to know the spoiler, but what informed you that there is a major spoiler in one of the trailers? I think Im kinda okay with it, because now that I know there is a major spoiler, my thoughts are going all over the place crafting all sorts of crazy ideas and theories.

I went into shadow based on the poster alone, no prior Ico awareness. I spent an hour riding around on agro stabbing and trampling lizards, then accidentally stumbled across the first Collosus. Of course i lept off the cliff edge instinctually lol
Ico and Shadow of the Colossus...the only game I've ever kept sealed. Huge backlog, always put it off. Now I feel like it should stay sealed because I've had it that way for so long. I'm sure it's an excellent game, but I'll never know...

Shadow of the Colossus is in my top 5 favorite games ever. It really connected with me, and every inch of the world map mystified me, and no other game has felt like it. Tbh though, I'm not too excited for The Last Gaurdian. It looks like a game that should have released back in 2012, and like Pete said in the video, it wont be as appreciated because of it. I still think it'll be good, but I don't think it'll blow me away. Not in today's gaming landscape. It just looks like a game of the past that Sony was willing to keep on file and now it's coming out, and while yes that shows they have confidence in it, I don't think it's a good sign it was delayed for an entire gaming generation. Sorry for my pessimism, but I feel overhyping is damaging A LOT of games for people.
I'm more excited for "The Last Guardian" than I have been for any game.....ever! Part of it is due to the people involved in making it. Part of it is due to the mystery & myth that has surrounded it's existence. I know in my heart that "The Last Guardian" will be nothing short of a masterpiece. I think SONY knows this too. That's why they have allowed the extra time & money needed to get it right. This game is going to have emotions & jaw dropping moments that none of us will be expecting. To everyone who thinks this game can't possibly live up to the hype, I say you might be in for a shock. By the way, what are your other top 4 games ever? lol

SolidSnake684 I've never played any of those. In fact I've never played any Zelda game. That will change next year though. I will be buying a Wii-U or NX so I can play "Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild". I would have to give some very serious thought as to my top 5 games ever. "Shadow Of The Colossus" would be one of them for sure. And I have a very strong feeling that "The Last Guardian" will end up on that list too. As for now, my top 5 modern ( meaning games released since 2000 in North America ) games would be 1--Shadow Of The Colossus 2--Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 3--D2 4--Limbo 5--Burnout: Paradise
Yeah the new Zelda looks amazing. Theyre the kinda games I think you would enjoy, judging by your favorite games. But Breath of the Wild is looking like a great one to start with
I respect your opinion. In the case of TLG, though, I don't really think Sony overhyped it, it's a strange thing to say for all the time it went completely dark. What makes me confident about it not being the next Duke Nukem Forever is that it was always worked on by the same team, the same people who stuck to the game's concepts and struggled over two generations to get them done as originally intended.
For what concerns the graphics department, switching to another engine when the game was brought to PS4 would have marked the end of the project, no doubt about it. Some very complex technical solutions were engineered around the existing codebase: retooling them for another engine with the risk of them not working properly and introducing unforeseen bugs?... No thanks.
The Last Guardian has been an uphill struggle since Team ICO first stumbled upon issues (ironically, most of the first year of development went so smooth that a release in 2011 seemed realistic at the time), and I can only imagine those guys' reactions when they'll finally get to bring Sony that gold master: nine years of dedication, challenges, tensions and breakdowns, in pursuit of something that seemed impossible who knows how many times.
It's all things that adds up to being an ICO/SOTC fan, for me. The way I see them, those games are not just consumer products, they bear more value than just the hours and effort it takes to play them. The same goes for The Last Guardian with all of its alleged flaws.

I really wanted to like this game but the awfully camera got to me. I put in about 5--6 hours and gave up. I love the graphics, gameplay was great, music was beautiful but that god damn camera made me physically ill. You could tell the game originally had a fixed camera system but then went in at the last second and changed it.
For me the camera controls didn't bother that much, what really made me lose my mind is the boy's movement, if only he could walk normally, instead of only tip toeing or running like a madman, It would make things a lot easier to enjoy for sure.
It's a pity though, they could make a patch to add it.
Maybe Ico has set such a standard for yourself and been made even more untouchable by the passage of time, that a new game dethroning it would be impossible. I find these days I try to take games on their own merits and try not to pay too much attention to the hype machine. I have a lot of nostalgia for certain titles and try not to compare them to newer ones. I find that I enjoy games more these days by taking this approach.
On another note, I found the games Inside and Firewatch to be a really two great gaming experiences. Both are amazing examples of a games using narrative and strong character development to create an emotional experience that stayed with me for months. I highly recommend...... Without me overhyping them, obviously.

I think hype is killing the game industry like you said but that's almost entirely due to bs trailers. In fact, some of these trailers are so bs that class action lawsuits need to be filed, I believe. People are getting refunded for games like no man sky, so that's a step in the right direction
I agree with your point on playing games blind. Companies show off too much of a game now. I guess they want to build hype to get more pre-orders.
It's especially bad with Final Fantasy 15. SE has basically showed most of the potential "wow!" moments a player could have if they played the game blind.

I understand what you are saying and you have already agreed it will be a big seller. I'm getting it, you're getting it, millions more will buy it. I agree to not over think games and build them up in your mind with how good they will be, but I think it's a given that you, myself and others will love playing it.
