  • My taste in modern games is changing rapidly. I'm only sticking to certain genres and moving further away from ones I used to love. In this video I discuss what types of games I'm still liking, not liking, and measures I'm taking going forward as I pivot even more back into retro games. #SMTVV #retrogames #gamepass

Yeah dude so true. I think it comes down to having smaller teams. If everyone almost knows everyone working on the game then I think there is a sense of comradery that comes through in the final product. I have been replaying some of the old idSoftware and raven games on my 90's PC recently. Often I can tell exactly who designed what level. Be it Romero, American McGee or Sandy Peterson. Their personas come through in the design. It is wild.

      @nazor1 3 месяца назад +10

That’s what I’ve been trying to explain to myself and others- it’s not just nostalgia. Especially playing on original hardware and a CRT. The reason why emulated games feel worse is because they just don’t look and feel right- of course they can still be enjoyed immensely but there are a lot of twitch based shooters or run and guns or platformers which will never feel as they were supposed to without a CRT. I realized this when I’ve tried games not from my childhood on emulated collections and they just don’t click. But throw it into a Sega genesis on a CRT and that “one more try” arcade mentality makes sense again. It’s all about the input lag

It feels like companies now aren’t interested in making new and compelling games but making games that our perpetual games that consistently expand overtime like Fortnite or MMO’s or Minecraft or Valant. These games don’t require consistent creativity and continuity.
I also hate that everything is online so companies feel OK shipping out buggy broken games with flashy advertisements to entice you to buy them with the idea that they’ll just fix things later (I’m looking at you Anthem, starfield, and No Man’s Sky).

I cancelled my game pass subscription like 4 months ago and not for the same reason that you did. On the flip side, I honestly don't mind games with a lot of side quest bloat. In today's gaming landscape I actually enjoy buying a game (which costs roughly $100 CDN) and spending a month or so with it. I quit Game Pass because there were a bunch of games I wanted to play, but by the time I completed a game the next one I'd want to play was being removed from the service. I don't like having to game on a publisher or corporation's time, I like gaming on my time. I have multiple gaming platforms and simply found it cheaper to buy the games I want outright without having the feeling that I was in a time crunch to complete games. The thing that actually lead me to this is when the service had four Persona games on it at one time. They're 80+ hours and trying to play them all before they left the service lead to major burn out. Instead I bought Persona 3 & 4 for $40 CDN in a Steam Bundle and picked up Royal for like another $30. Now I can enjoy them when I'm ready to and I'm able to play other games I want to in between.

I started gaming with the Genesis, but for whatever reason, the 360/PS3 era is the perfect sweet spot for me when it comes to playing games. They're dirt cheap, hardware still works well and is easy to find parts for if needed, and I think in terms of graphical fidelity it does exactly *just enough* to where it doesn't feel like you have to forgive it so to speak for being on older hardware. I'll forever think that graphics/art style peaked with Halo 3, there's very few games I truly think look better than it. Gameplay wise, I think this generation of games had such a good mix - Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect, Call of Duty felt fantastic, the Tales series, Forza felt fantastic, games like Crackdown and GTA 4, Dead Space and BioShock - they all laid the foundation for these modern experiences that still stand the test of time.

Tried Game pass for 3 months for like a dollar when it first started. Never went back to it again. I figured in the long run I'm better off buying the games I like physically when they are cheap. Occasionally I'll even buy the same game digitally at rock bottom prices. That way I OWN the game outright both physically and digitally. I don't play online live service games at all because if a game shuts down because no one plays it, or if it needs an online connection, your investment amounts to a useless coaster. Babylon Falls and Redfall (in the future) come to mind. I'm going back to my PS2 and Gamecube collections more and more.

You're not the only one, Pete. I'm 24 and I've been struggling to stay optimistic for new games and the modern gaming industry for a few years now. I still play older / retro games on things like the PS1, PS2, PS3, OG Xbox, Xbox360, N64, GameCube and so on and lately I've found myself sticking to them even more so than usual because as of right now, gaming feels like a mess, especially in the Western industry. There are still games that come out that I enjoy every now and then but they feel so few and far between these days. I've been playing Castlevania: Rondo of Blood for the first time and I'm having a great time, it's so simple yet so fun and satisfying, especially overcoming the brutal challenge! And it was fun for what it was. But all of us left feeling like it was going to be a return to form and better... But it wasn't. It actually shown a light on how much more fun games are nowadays.

I'd like to say something that will inadvertently hit some people in the heart. But it needs to be said. My late father used to say back around the time the PS2 came out that he enjoyed games to a pretty good degree, but it all became too flashy and busy for him. My late older uncle in fact said the exact same thing. It was, quite literally, too much for him. Right now, 20+ years later, we're slowly starting to say the same things.
There's an elephant in the room here that we tend to refuse even exists. We never like to address it and rather blame companies for not being ''able to make games anymore'' or they're not having the passion anymore, or perhaps its ''woke'' culture, capitalism, business practices or social media that ruins ''modern gaming''. But the elephant in the room here is that we too grow older, and we're not 5, 10 or 15 anymore. We're just not into all the new stuff that aligns with our (now older) values. Just like my father wasn't into them anymore 20+ years ago. Our tastes are reminiscent of those times. Back when we thought everything was fine. But even those times had many issues within gaming. We just never noticed them. Not everything needs to appeal to us. It didn't back then either, so why should we now muster up interest?
Maybe a bunch of us are simply looking for excuses to refuse and accept the ever-changing world around us. However, it's alright to pivot back into the things we liked when we were younger. Let the world be for a second and focus on yourself.

The indie scene is packed with everything from retro games building on interesting stuff from the 90s and trailblazing indies that does new and unexpected things. Feels like there´s something cool coming out on a monthly basis. Often it´s almost overwhelming. Currently I´m deeply invested in Indika, Crow Country, Sonar Shock and especially Skald (one of the best RPG´s I´ve played of all time) and I´ve barely scratched the surface. Got Withering Rooms installed on my ps5 and have a bunch of games waiting in line. Meanwhile it´s also easier to play all the legacy games, so we really got everything now.

About a month later, I’ve started to go through the Judgement games.
I feel like these days, very few franchises have gotten me interested in playing them day of release, but the franchises that have generally haven’t disappointed me.

At this point and i swear on this claim, that companies should just continue to develop remakes, ports, classic revivals, 2DHD remasters, ect and that would probably keep the industry affloat even more so then this terrible phone games for kids era that we are currently living, no pashion, no creativity, no vision. I say, If it aint broken, why fix it. Just bring old games back into relevency that were developed by veteren artists and designers, for modern generations to enjoy. Look at well some of these have done from stuff that is brand new like octopath traveler to remakes like dawn of mana, Suikoden hundred heroes, Star ocean 2nd story R, and Dragon quest, to even full blown large scale remakes like FF VII, Resident evil, silent hill. This is what we all want really.

I understand how you feel, for me one of the biggest issues with modern gaming is setting aside 100 hours to play a specific game. For example I really like to Final Fantasy seven rebirth and I did all the side quest but it took me over 100 hours to beat the game and I’m probably never going to play it again, mainly because of how long it took to beat. I think back to some of my favorite RPG’s like Lunar the silver star i beat it at least 20 times on the Sega CD and 10 times on the PS1 and once on the Japanese Saturn. The thing about the game is it’s not super long and it’s not short it’s just right. I would recommend that you check out a game called Steller Blade it’s on PS5 it’s a action game and there are some side quest but it’s not overwhelming and it can take you anywhere from 15 hours to 30 hours to be depending on how you choose to play it. Check out the review and some gameplay you might be interested

The biggest issue I have with modern games is not the games themselves. It’s the time we live in. Social media has flushed us with so much information about so many games.
Most of my gaming experience is simply “I want to beat this game.” It’s not immersion but just to know what it’s about and having finished it so I can get to the next game on an almost endless list.
When I was a kid or teen, I had less choices and also less media telling me about all my options, so I focused in on the 6-7 games I got each year from holidays or through borrowing from a friend. I missed out on 90% of games that came out, but I didn’t have the same level of FOMO, because it wasn’t in my face daily about what else is out there I haven’t got to yet.

Okay so I'm not alone here. With all the game announcements this week not really hitting for me I thought I was aging out of games. Monster Hunter and Astro Boy are the only games announced that i really clicked with. The indie scene is way more interesting to me for fresh concepts and stories.
I cancelled PSN Plus, Switch Online and Gamepass going basically PC only at this point.

Same here man. I've been a gamer since I was like 6. I'm 37 now and I think realize that I'm not the target demographic anymore and gaming is no longer for me. I don't but microtransactions, I don't buy season passes. The past year I don't find myself playing many games made after 2015 unless it's a remake. The resident evil remakes are awesome.

"receding into retro games" is an interesting move that has been done before as the industry goes through its development cycles. I think a better name for what's happening is just the 2nd coming of the indie game. Indie games have the physical media aspect and scope to keep you entertained while the bigger companies restructure to stay relevant.

    You're not alone.
More games these days aren't always exactly games, they're interactive movies.
And when they do get to the gameplay itself, it's an open world time sink of needless fetching and collecting to progress.
Your Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a good example. The story is great, the combat works well, but it was insistent on me playing random mini games like Queen's Blood which I didn't enjoy.
I played for 150 hours doing everything. At times, by the time I got to doing some combat again, I'd forgotten the controls.
I'm playing more and more old games. Like you I used to play tons of online shooters, but modern shooters don't compare to the old days of Counter Strike and Halo 3.

I've researched and researched making a more modern console my 'centerpiece' but nothing serves enough other than just MORE. Meanwhile, scheduling my play time is difficult enough for my 180 game total collection. Man, everything you said hits home with me. It's the reason ANY of us still pickup and play and enjoy the classic games. They're complete and work right out of the box, they're fun and never lost focus of the purpose of the game. I can't remember the last time I bought a new game that didn't require some gigantic day one update because the game practically shipped unfinished. Then, when you do finally begin playing, they don't let you just enjoy the damn game. They have to spam you with a ton of crap and side quests to do that you just feel overly stimulated and are left wondering, "what the heck should I really be doing?!?" Then to top it all off, they've lost sight of the entire purpose of the game, the FUN...They're simply just not fun to play anymore. The reason for you to not want to put down the controller because you're simply having a great time, is just not there anymore. I purchased an Xbox Series X and I sometimes wish I never bothered. I've had it for close to 3 years now and I'm yet to purchase anything specifically designed for that console other than Hogwarts Legacy, which was actually a purchase for my WIFE who's a huge Harry Potter fan and even she couldn't finish the game because (and I $hit you not) she feels overwhelmed when playing it. She's a non "gamer", so that right there speaks volumes to me...

I totally feel the same. I was actually thinking about this the other day while in the shower. I thought about how back in the day, you really didn't know what type of game you were going to get when buying them. Sure, we had magazines and early forums to discuss it but it was a surprise and the majority of the time, original ideas.
These days, yes the graphical ability of video games have advanced exponentially, thr majority are copying each others concept and while I don't mind developers taking inspiration from other games, when you do it excessively like today's market has done, nothing becomes exciting to play. Nothing feels like a surprise anymore. Even when trying to avoid the internet and spoilers for a new release, you kinda already know what to expect. "It will have a cover system like X game, an inventory system like Y game and a story like Z game."
We don't have any innovation anymore and it seems like indie developers are taking that torch to make original ideas that triple A devs won't do anymore but it doesn't benefit us older gamers because indie is always small scale. People talk bad about CyberPunk but at least they took some chances. Tried something different and it was demonized because of it, obviously because of quality issues. It scares studios to take risks and they stick to what makes money. I miss the old days...

Having just recently beat the original SMT V I can attest to it not being a typical "modern game". As you'd expect it's good old SMT at the core, but with a bit sloppier level design (IMO). The only "modern" sensibility is having you roam around large open world-like areas more than crawling in labyrinth-like dungeons. Atlus games are by and large following the same formula they crystalized in the PS2 era with SMT 3 Nocturne and Persona 3/4, and thank god for that.

Early GenXr here. Playing since the Atari 2600 was just the VCS. I don't do digital or suscriptions, so I've been prepping for a while for the day I won't buy any new games. I don't sell either so I have 40+ years worth of games in my shelves, yes including my entire CIB Atari game collection. At this point, between old games I'm happy to replay and the backlog I've built, I think I'm set.
I've lost interest in most new games, for many reasons, lack of physical being just one. For the past year or so, as I bought each game I wondered if its the last I'll ever buy.
But I've been pleasantly surprised that gaming (as in "new games") isn't as dead for me as I would have expected by now. Lies of P, Stellar Blade and the upcoming Astro Bot and Silent Hill (please, please offer them in physical) still get my interest. But Its certainly winding down and retro focused from now on.

As usual your takes are spot on and pretty relatable. There are so many trends about modern AAA gaming that are grating; the open world frictionless Ubisoft template, design by committee and wokeism, bloated and overlong dev cycles, too many remasters/remakes/reboots, evergreen Shartnite and mobile slop that negatively affect real games too (buy your kids Nintendo games, parents). Still, there are more good games than I'm able to play through in a timely fashion between newer AAAs, AAs, indies, retro games and a MMO on the side. If I were only going from AAA to AAA release or the latest Twitch flavor of the month streamer bait I'd probably be more genuinely despondent. It's not even really a practical problem but it stills affects the discourse around gaming and the "hype cycle" for new games very negatively. The last State of Play for example was all in all very disappointing except Astro Bot. There were like three Chinese F2P/gacha games there, like WTF are they even doing.

I've been playing videogames for over 30 years now. I do see this general turn towards giving players huge checklists vs. just naturally exploring in AAA games. I would like this stuff to be more optional going forward so it does not prey on your brain as much and leaves you open to explore what are often really beautifully realized 3D spaces. At the same time, I often watch my girlfriend, who is a less experienced player, play the same games with a more open mindset and she tends to explore the world first before even realizing the structure of the goals. So I think it is more me being instantly aware of the games structure and wanting to do well that stands in the way of freely exploring and enjoying myself. Also fueled by the want to get the most out of the game for the time I have to play it.

We're at a stage where we have so many old games to check out, and new games are becoming less and less enjoyable, so people are dipping into that backlog, and finding hundreds of great games they've never played before. It's not good for the modern games industry, but I think gamers are getting some good out of this era.
I myself recently tacked an old NES nemesis of mine called Castlequest. It's a puzzle/platformer that is really easy to get softlocked in. You run around rooms collecting colored keys that open any door of the same color. The goal is to get to the princess without running out of resources. The controls take a little getting used to, but it's really fun.

Went back to old(er) games this year. Played and finished Ratchet and Clank 1, The Darkness, Asura's Wrath, Dante's Inferno, Mini Ninjas, and Gears of War 1 so far. Playing NFS Underground and Bornout 3 right now'
Enjoyed these ganes so much, fantastic core mechanics, cool settings, fun gameplay..and: They aren't bloated to 50 hours, perfect 10-15 hours are just plenty.

Very refreshing to hear I'm not alone in this. I've become very selective in what modern games I buy. Mainly RPGs and indie games. Other than those, Ive been fluctuating between SNES and Vita generations.

I have such a big backlog of games so I've been loving having a slower last year or two. Plus indie games have been killing it.

Maybe you are going through what I did around 2003. I was getting older, early 30's, and everything coming out was influenced by Half Life and I got sick of it. I'm a single player and everything was on rails, scripted events, and modern military. I eventually quit playing and my desktop got way outdated. I only had laptops from there and would piddle around a little but not much. I did get Skyrim a year after it released and played quite a bit of it but never finished it. Laptops to me aren't good for games.
It wasnt until last December I finally got a new gaming desktop rig with a ultra wide 4 ft monitor (awesome btw) and am now catching up on things I missed out on. I still don't play as much as I used to and sometimes it feels like a chore however overall I enjoy it. Playing Grim Dawn, Elden Ring, and go back to Skyrim from time to time. Some others. Still haven't finished the main Skyrim quest after 12 years ha ha.

Dunno about retro, but I've been obsessed with Animal Wells and Tunic this year. Animal Well is being labelled a "metroidvania" (and tunic works in a similar way, although it is isometic) but it struck me while playing them that depsite the name, when I was a kid, these were just known as... well designed games. Thought has to be applied in making all the pieces fit and the joy is in picking them apart.
You're right AAA's are too long, but the real problem with them is, due to the production costs, they're devoid of risk. No secrets, everything task to complete, anything extra in the game instead of being a cool thing to find is sold to us as dlc or a microtransaction. So what ends up happening is, to compensate for the lack of engagement the games just become bloated and huge 60 hr minimum of doing the same thing.
Tunic and Animal well are both no longer than 13 hrs with a map and walkthroughs. But take the walkthrough away and you could be stuck for hrs, which is kinda the point, there are things to do that provide great gifts but you have to find them. AAAs will tell you everything for fear of you not getting your moneys worth.
This isnt a new phenomena, the enshitification has been in process since the tail end of the 360 era, where the 360 admittedly had good games, but they were kinda overshadowed by xbox live that allowed people who dont really like games to play sports with their friends over their tvs from home

The state of gaming makes me feel like Mr. Incredible in that scene.
    "What are you waiting for?"
    "I don't know. Something amazing, I guess."
    **sigh** "Me too, kid."

    I restarted mass effect one...
    The upgrade plays much better.
Sometimes newer games give us less by doing more.
BIO SHOCK INFINITE GOT RID OF THE WEAPON WHEEL.
I just beat Borderlands 2 dlc...
It's a series that is hard to fuck up so I'm excited by it's fun story, art, and sillyness.
I have faith in gaming...just sometimes industries need to go through dark eras for creativity to rebirth like a Phoenix rising.
    SUITS ARE RUINING CREATIVITY

lol the only game I play is kinda a "connected service" or whatever. used to game really hard. Now I almost exclusively play a few games of Tetris 99 on nintendo switch online. It's like 95% of my current gaming and I play for just a few minutes at a time, maybe a half hour here and there to get the daily challenges. It feels like good brain exercise and it's a nice game to not get stuck in for hours. Tetris 99 is by far my fav switch game of all time! I really hope that when the day comes that they discontinue it, they make a new version on the switch successor. Battle Royal + Tetris is an amazing formula!

I’ve always been about retro games so I don’t consider myself receding back into them because I’ve always been playing them along with modern games..but I understand you Pete I feel the same way..I’m not a fan of physical games being ignored and also I would love more 3D platformers from the bigger companies..true AAA titles..I know that Astrobot is coming out I’m actually looking forward to that for the same reason you mentioned..glad you at least are still enjoying many retro games while looking forward to some upcoming ones 👍🏼

Dragons dogma 2 is the only game that gave me that sense of adventure/nostalgia from old school games(got lost in the exploring and systems in the game) underrated like the first one imo, hope we get a definite edition at some point.

To make a parallel, a good DJ start with low energy song, then ramp up, then go down to not exhaust the crowd and so on. It’s a journey.
Many open modern games tries to put the player in a constant state of high stimulation, and as a old gamer, it get tiring really quick. These games, also take the players hand and force them to keep a certain pace. I think these games are made for modern teenager that are always stimulated by reel on tiktok and so on.
Atm, I’m playing fallout 4 in survival. Not because theres a tv show, but because it was on my backlog and 60% off psn (had the game on disc before). Fantastic game, I can go at my own pace, prepare my expedition, and when I go ‘on mission’ theres always something unexpected happening and its a lot of fun.
So, playing FO4, living the life of a settler, taking my time and embracing the world OR being overwhelmed by some bombtastic ADHD proof game ? I’l choose FO4.

Fallout 4 on survival mode is something that has been on the back of my mind too. I gotta ignore the base building stuff though outside of just the basics like bed/workbench, that stuff is the reason I quit playing back when it came out.

@@PeteDorr In survival all these games mechanic make sense. You need a settlement to have fresh water and a cooking station (food without radiation). To save my sanity I installed a mod that allow quicksave using the pip boy 😅 I you role play your character, you wont be disappointed.
I switched to survival at level 6, so I had a little bit of inventory to get me going. It’s hard but rewarding. Currently level 15.

I dropped gamepass about a year ago and don't miss it. I will be doing the same with ps+ premium when that ends in August. I just look at the list of games they have and if it interests me I buy it just so I'm not tied to subscriptions. Just came back from a retro con and traded and bought a ton of OG xbox, PS3, xbox 360, and a few ps4 games. So I have plenty to play that I just don't need the subs. Currently playing through tales of Symphonia on the ps3 and really enjoying it. I have a PS5 and XSX but mostly use both to play ps1 or ps2 games (that get added that I get for free for buying them on ps3) or OG Xbox or 360 games on them. I know there is still newer games I want but I'll get them when I see them at Walmart in the clearance section or amazon when they are $19.99 or less. Or even used on eBay and they are around $5 to $10 bucks.
