This is just superb, I been tryin to find out about "survival gear list" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Ryanzon Survival Genie - (should be on google have a look ) ? Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my friend got great results with it.
I wanted to learn 2D animation so started with this book and I'm in love with it, its so fun and I still learn new things... Rest in Peace Richard Williams 💐
Very strangely, I bought this book (as well as “The Illusion of Life”) in mid-August last summer before starting my first 3D animation class and I found out the next day that Richard Williams had just passed away. That timing shook me a bit, but when I began to read the book, I thought of how indebted both aspiring and working animators are to this man for leaving such a resource and wealth of knowledge behind as his legacy.
I love Richard Williams. I saw his film, The Thief and the Cobbler when I was in middle school. Watching that film, just made me spark. I loved the animation in that film. I first saw that book. I’ve been meaning to buy but kept forgetting it. What I remembered about the book was the logo on the book. I bought the book two months ago I’m learning so much from it. Even made notes. It’s been a year since his death. RIP Richard Williams.
Richard Williams was my hero. Somehow it wasn’t until two days ago that I found he had passed. This is a touching tribute to the man of the era. Thank you
@Jean-Denis Haas, thank you so much for this video and what a nice gesture to commemorate his legacy. I recently bought his book and couldn't agree more he was super generous by sharing his massive body of knowledge to us all. I am learning so much from his book. I hope that our generation of animators could at least become half as good as him, both in terms of our work and being generous. Keep up the great work, and I am learning a lot from all your animation resources. R.I.P Mr Richard Williams
One of the greatest books if not the greatest book in my collection. I just finished watching Frank and Ollie last night and man :') those two if they weren't my heros before they definitely are now. I'm waiting for my copy of The illusion of life to show up in the mail. I have you and Arran Baker to thank for getting me hooked and pushing me down the rabbit hole.
Just getting started my adventure with animation, I was searching for a good source of knowlege. I've heard about this book so I ordered It... I wanted good book, now I know I ordered a DIAMOND. Thank you Richard Williams, Rest In Peace and let us learn from everything you left behind ❤️
His daughter Natasha Sutton Williams told the PA that her father had been suffering from cancer. He was animating and writing until 6 p.m. on the day he died, she said. wow this crazy to me, he was still animating while on his death bed..
3:15 I exactly remember when you were talking about this (and the example about working on Transformers!) and I couldn't agree more with you! I have the whole DVD set and the book also! you can easily see how energy he puts in all of his DVD sets and how he explains everything with so much love for animation! Thank you very much for this video JD! RIP Richard Williams!
Thanks Jean-Denis, I got the app a while ago but didn't realise that you could actually do a frame by frame within the animated clips which is super useful. Rest in peace Richard, what an amazing contribution he has made, thank you so much.
I happened to find a copy of this tome at a local charity shop one day. For $1.50AU, I thought it was a good find, and so purchased it immediately. It ought to help with my animation skills!
What a loss. This book and The Illusion of Life are musts for anyone studying animation. Frank and Ollie's book will tell you the "why," but Richard Williams book tells you the "how."
That's a big loss for sure. As to the DVD's you should have mentioned that it's actual lectures of him explaining the book material, even so the app is good supplement, it's not the same thing as DVD's. Thank you for the video.
I brought it but I'm not sure how to go about tackling this beast. Should I just read it or do I follow all the exercises in the book or only the ones that apply to me? Should I take notes or just leave sticky tabs and highlights? Or should I just try to apply want I learn to my personal work? How would you personally go about learning from this book? haha sorry for all the questions I just want to to use this book the best I can.
Don’t be sorry, all good questions! I can’t answer for you as I don’t know how you prefer to learn but I can tell you what I did. I read the whole thing in order to know what’s ahead and just to get a general overview. Then as I was taking classes at the Academy I consulted the book whenever I needed it based on what my assignments were. Now I have a bunch of sticky tabs in there for the major areas I need it for (like walks for humans and creatures).
Thanks! I need to check where that is but with cycles your first and last frame are the same (so you know it cycles properly) but when you play it you don’t play the last frame. So 1 and 9 are the same and you play 1 to 8.
there are so many versions of the book the original which is the one shown on this video, the expanded edition, and the 2012 edition which is the latest
The digital version has animated material so they’re not the same but depends on you if that’s better to you. Some prefer a book, some prefer digital learning material.
Don't know you gonna reply me or not I buy this book today on Amazon want to Learn animation will this be help full or I waste my money ? Please tell .
Is the app complete??? I mean if you compare to the book does it have it all? Edit: got the digital version.. and must say this book... Is just... Wow.. if you are learning by yourself and of course for students or whoever who wants to get involved with animation (and for some that already are)... Holy flying pancakes this is FO REAL this is the craziest and coolest book I love it. I'm going to buy the physical just because my husband likes irl books.
David K. I’m actually not sure if there’s more than an iPad app out there, like an Android version. You’ll have to check the iPad compatibility list regarding the app (I can check tomorrow if you want).
Chroxite Online course is helpful because of the feedback. The book is a great resource and super helpful when you start out. So to me both are a good choice.
What a loss... I owe so much to his teachings.

I bought the book twice to support Richard's work. RIP legend.
🫶🏻
I started my career with this book. So many memories... Thanks for the walk through, JD
Didn't we all started with this book, i don't know a single animator who has not read this book.

The book app is definitely a life saver for a animator, living has a nomad we need to carry light luggage!! 😂😂

So sad to hear he passed away. I was the designer who designed the boxset with him. Such a legend!!!
Steve Hughes Very sad. 😢 Cool to hear you were able to work on that!
I owed both the book and it's app.
Same!
Rest in peace sir..😢😢
Tech Motion 😢
I will buy this book to make good animations coz my videos always look crappy
It will be helpful!
They should make it for Androids aswell:(
Agreed!
I have a question, which book is more clear for beginners? This book or Cartoon animation book by Preston Blair?
They’re both good, although I prefer the survival kit
May He Rest In Peace.

Jean-Denis Haas Atleast he can share his talent in Heaven.
Channel X ❤️
Nice video. Just reading this book & what I don't get is why does it say the walk cycles are on 8's but it shows 9 frame's?
Thanks!
I need to check where that is but with cycles your first and last frame are the same (so you know it cycles properly) but when you play it you don’t play the last frame. So 1 and 9 are the same and you play 1 to 8.

Yeah that can happen with older books.

@@jeandenishaas thanks 😊

What about the Illusion of life is it necessary to have this book too ?
badr yagami For me yes, I love that book!
It was possible to download the DVD content for free. If you search you may find it
I don’t want to promote piracy.
Does anyone know the difference between this version and the expanded one?
The expanded version has animal locomotion in it
do you think it is possible to learn animation entirely from this book?
No but it’s definitely helpful
I feel your pain i have the book incase I need it
👍🏻
I'm not able to find the Apple app, is it under a different name?
Are you looking with a iPhone or iPad?
Is there much difference between the original and the expanded edition of the book?
It’s about 40 pages at the end, very interesting but I wouldn’t say it’s essential, if you have the regular edition you’re good
@@aoterou oh thank you, because I am thinking of buying the book and just wondered.
Yeah good advice. I do like the iPad version to scrub through animation examples.
@@jeandenishaas yeah that is a cool feature. I can't actually download the app, but it's good that the book is a thing lol
