    I'm in California in the US, but I still agree with you; the red handled SAK doesn't attract as much attention when you are using it in public. People don't take exception to it and see it as a "tool." And it's a good EDC pocket knife.

    Both are very nice knives. I can't imagine anybody so faint of heart to find the Pioneer as menacing though. To me it just looks a bit more sophisticated than the Spartan. I have both and like them very much. I often carry a Classic SD in the 5th pocket to add a scissors and file to the tool set. I think the Pioneer has been around since about 1961.

    I like the Spartan for every day carry but, in many cases, I find the Climber a bit more versatile as an EDC it being, basically, a Spartan with the addition of scissors and a parcel hook. They don't add much to the weight and the scissors in particular come in handy often. For trips abroad I used to carry the larger Outrider but now it seems that in some places (like the UK) it is problematic or illegal for carry because it has a blade lock. Seems silly to me (as a Canadian) but I suppose I will have to get a more or less equivalent 91mm model for use abroad ... possibly the Explorer since the magnifying glass may be useful on trips given my aging eyes :-)

    What they have on the Soldier is not really the "Swiss Army's logo" but the coat of arms of Switzerland.
    And yes, most Soldiers came without a key ring, but Vic produced some Soldiers with a key ring for the civilian market only, mainly in the 90s.

      The Spartan is one of the least capable SAK's in Victorinox's line up as it is "tool deficient" I have 6 collectable Spartans in my collection but would never use one as an EDC. I have a large collection of special edition & limited edition 93mm Pioneers & Pioneer X's & have additional Pioneers, X's , 84mm Cadets & a 111mm Garant ( nomad version ) in my Gentleman's knife EDC rotation . If I need a PTK ( Pocket Tool Kit ) on any particular day I forgo carrying a Gentleman's knife & carry either a modified 91mm Huntsman ( with Plus scales, Firefly ferro rod in place of the toothpick, tinder spiral & mini screwdriver on the corkscrew & fitted with a SwissQlip for convenient pocket carry ) or its smaller version in the Victorinox Delmont collection the 85mm EvoGrip S17. Rounding out my EDC which always consists of 2 SAK's is the 58mm Midnite Manager with its LED & pen on my key chain. For me the Spartan is a non-starter as an EDC & before I went over to the Huntsman & the EvoGrip S17 , I did carry for a few years the 91mm Climber ( also decked out with Plus scales ) with its full size scissors as it is ideal as an urban EDC if you don't need the wood saw of the Huntsman

    Excellent review and comparison! I have watched many reviewers and I find your style great and useful. Your view points are exactly what everyone is trying to figure out on an EDC. I love the look and overbuilt quality of the pioneer. But as life style and circumstances change in life, I'm finding the function and versatility of the cellidor knives more practical and useful day to day. Rocking a small tinker now days with a small classic for scissors and nail file. Jeff

    Since both blades are under 3 inches and are not locking, there shouldn't be a problem with either knife in the UK.

    I'd say Pioneer wins hands down. All the tools on it are sturdier than on a 91mm and all you lose out on (apart from tweezers and toothpick) are the corkscrew - but you can pull a cork with the can opener - and the extra blade. However the reamer can be made extra sharp and function as a package opener. The backsprings are stronger on alox models, and they're slightly slimmer than the celidor 91mm equivalents.
    Having said that I like both. I have a Hiker and a Farmer - so basically the same as what you have but with a saw, except the Hiker has a Phillips instead of corkscrew. I generally EDC the Hiker as urban EDC as I put plus scales on it and carry a pen for emergencies, together with a Leatherman Squirt. If I'm going to the woods I change it out for a Farmer and take a larger multitool, plus a Classic SD in my First Aid kit so I still have tweezers. If I'm camping I add to that a Soldier and a fixed blade like a Mora. So maybe that could be considered a tad overkill, rolling with 3 SAKs, a multitool and a fixed blade lol.

    • @ThrHillSeeker
      @ThrHillSeeker  3 года назад +2

      @@dmytro11111 Hi, I have pretty limited experience doing this. I generally do it by laying the back of the reamer on a flat sharpening stone so that the concave edge is facing me. Then, rotate the whole knife towards me until the edge of the reamer is flush with the sharpening stone. Finally, sharpen by pushing it away from you across the stone, like you would with a knife. I hope this helps.

    Nice comparison video. My generally carry a Victorinox Ranger because I find I'm often in situations where having scissors, saw, or file are helpful for completing a task. I do love the Alox knives though - I have an old cross Farmer and it's one of my favorites. However, one thing I've noticed is that during heavy use, the sharper corners of the Alox knives make it a bit less comfortable in the hand compared to a knife with plastic handles.

    • @ThrHillSeeker
      @ThrHillSeeker  3 года назад

      Thanks for commenting! The Ranger has a great combination of tools. It really is a case of picking out what you need for the situations that you encounter (without cramming an entire toolbox into your pocket). Would love to hear more of your personality, and less of a sales pitch for the knife.
