I saw the band in the fox july '76 and Steve was on stage. Ronnie called him up to the front of the stage to let us see and hear how good he was. One more from the road concert was unreal. We had no tickets before hand and bought 3 tickets from a black guy right in front of the fabulous fox theater in Atlanta, Ga. That night. All in the balcony, but there is no bad seat in the Fox. We went down to the lobby to buy 3 beers and low and behold was the band Foghat standing in a circle talking to each other, i guess there was more celebs there to see this historical concert of which there were 3 in a row. We saw them the last night they were there . Proceeds of these 3 nights went to "save the Fox". They never tore the old palace down and it still stands to this day. Thank you guys for remembering my favorite band which i saw 3 times before that awful crash. Love yall from Alabama! P.a.jacobs

Now THAT is cool. Is there any way to find media coverage of the event? I am sure the local paper must have had something? Foghat? Wow. Wonder who else?

And what was significant about that number I know it's kind of morbid but Ronnie died at 29 was first thing That came to my mind.😢

You bring up some interesting points, including that knowing Ronnie, it is doubtful, he would have put Steve on stage unless he was well groomed. Ronnie was an exacting kind of fellow...

I do not believe that's correct. Mr. and Ms. Gaines were born in Miami, OK as you stated. Yes, both Ms. Billingsley and Mr. Van Zant asked Ms. Gaines to be in the band.
As the story goes, Ms. Gaines kept pestering Mr. Van Zant to hear her brother play, which they finally relented to. As you stated, Mr. Elson was told to "Turn him off if he sucks" to which Mr. Elson stated, "This guy doesn't suck, he can play."
If you look at the 1976 Knebworth festival with the solos during "T for Texas", you'll see Mr. Van Zant smile. I believe he knows that he made the right choice with bringing Mr. Gaines into the band. It was said that Mr. Gaines always had a guitar nearby. Mr. Gaines once stated in so many words, "I just hope I've contributed and can continue to contribute to the band".
No, you're right. They were born the same day, but Mr. King is from CA and Mr. Gaines from OK, so they were not born in the same hospital. Yes, I believe a dream of Mr. Van Zant was to do a collaboration with Mr. Haggard as well as to perform at Madison Square Garden. Yes, Mr. Van Zant had a deep respect for Mr. Gaines and he believed that Mr. Gaines brought back a new spark to the band which had been lacking after the departure of Mr. King.
Indeed, Mr. Gaines was talented. He could write, sing, and play. Only Mr. Medlocke was able to do that for the band as well. Others played and wrote, but didn't perform. Both Mr. Gaines and Mr. Medlocke did so with good documented examples.

@@rrrttt1112 I'm not counting background vocals. I mean really singing and getting credit for it like Mr. Medlocke or Mr. Gaines. That's nothing against Mr. Wilkeson, he was very talented.

@@Cagey-1 Hiring Mr. Gaines was one of the best things for that band. It put a new spark in them, that's for sure. Mr. Van Zant pretty much admitted as much. What was your association with the band?
