      No one should be upset over a re-seller, bro is just trying to make some money to take care of himself and his family. Also, no one is forced to buy anything from him. I'm a re-seller too, so I get it.

    I have mad respect for all of you guys, including Caleb. I basically found each channel through the other, pretty much found you guys and then through you guys that's where I found not only retro Rick but gabbo and Caleb and mort and gone though old seasons of the game chasers and went back to watching storage wars after stopping a number of years ago just to find the episodes with Dusty. All of you guys, Riff & Ricky especially, Make all this feel more than just a community, like we're all really good friends by extension. I learned a lot about what to look for at flea markets and swap meets more carefully All thanks to Riff,

      I'm a re-seller too. I re-sell electronics, mostly iPads, Tablets, BOSE Stereos, things like that and IDK why anyone would want to hate on someone just trying to hustle and make some money. Trust me, it's not as easy as it seems either it can be very mentally exhausting dealing with customers and returns and all that. Also, I don't think it's anyone's business if Caleb is a gamer or if he has a love for video games. Why does that even matter? It doesn't matter at all!

    1. His Amazon store has worse prices than DKOldies and he acts like a smug business know it all when his whole business model is ripping off old women who buy games on Amazon

    I wish I could have talk to Caleb about the Gamecube gambit as a turning point in his channel. There is things he doesn't seem to realize. I saw him at Midwest gaming classic but just meeting someone for the first time and being like 'hey let me criticize you' isn't really a nice thing to do. But to start with people were living vicariously through him. We can't just go out and buy every gamecube game we want, we were watching Caleb do it and empathizing those feelings ourselves. So when he sells his collection it goes against what a large majority of people would do and we feel 'betrayed' or at least it breaks that immersion that brought us to the channel in the first place. For most people who collect games, when you collect it you want it forever, you don't sell it without a very good reason or a very long thought process. And I could go on but it at least starts there.

    I would say regarding Phoenix Resale it’s hard for a collector to understand “collecting” let’s use the game cube gambit for instance to turn around and sale it makes the “love/nostalgia” for the journey seem disingenuous because as collectors it’s so hard for us to let go of those games we love. This is why I could never get into his channel. It’s just because any journey Caleb would take me on, I know is going to end in him just selling it making it seem like he doesn’t really care about it at
    all. I understand he is a seller and maybe he doesn’t need to acquire games and keep them forever to enjoy them but that’s hard for collectors to understand. I hope this makes since.

    Love Caleb and his content. I collect and feel so great when I get a grail, but I do resell because I feel instead of something collecting dust on my shelf, I want to get it on to the next person who is going to enjoy it. Reselling actually drops the price of games because the more on the market the less they are worth. Personally without resellers some of these grails would be 3x the price.

    Ive been reselling for more than 30 years. Before video games and ebay you could go to garage sales and find "antiques" and sell those to specialty shops and nobody cared.
    I think a lot of the hate with video games comes with a lot of entitlement game collectors have. Oh that game was $5 a few years ago and now it's well over $50 thanks to resellers. There's usually a lot of factors that go into why one item has intrinsic value and what makes that value rise, and sometimes people just need to point a finger and blame somebody.
    I do know that some haters out there worked at places like GameStop. Lol.

    • @mikes062
      @mikes062 5 месяцев назад

      The funny thing that nobody really gets is it’s not really the resellers that have jacked up the prices, it’s the people that have money now that missed out on things when they were kids. And it’s all about the supply and demand, they want those old games and bid higher and higher on eBay making the value go up. That’s capitalism, welcome to America lol And on top of that the pandemic made things explode because anyone that ever had any interest in gaming bought those things because a lot of them had nothing else to do so they bought that stuff. Personally I have multiple hobbies that can be expensive and I don’t make a ton of money so I look for anything that I can to make money on and then find the stuff I want. And like Retro Rick and other RUclipsrs say you need to ask at garage sales when you want to get video games or whatever else, it works for sure, a few weeks ago my town had city wide garage sales and I scored at a few sales, the biggest lot wasn’t even out, I got it because I asked, and I sold about half of it a couple weeks later for 10x what I paid, which is helping me pay part of my credit card so that’s helping me a ton too. There’s nothing wrong with reselling whether it’s your job or side hustle and in my opinion the people that cry about it the most are simply just jealous, and some are even sitting in their parents basement and don’t have a job…lol

    Caleb is so correct about the feeling you get when you find a game for a great deal that’s worth way more than you’re paying I almost enjoy it more than playing the game Im picking up. Something about knowing you’re not paying retail for something is a great feeling whether it’s a game, a car, or even just a meal at a fast food joint. I love collecting games and I truly think Caleb was one of the people in the past few years that rekindled my love for it and also showed me I don’t have to pay an arm and a leg for the things I want because there are deals out in the wild and he finds them!

    I got into reselling about a year BEFORE I discovered retro Rick and Phoenix resale and the whole RUclips reseller scene. I have no problem with reselling in general (though of course I find it tiresome that it’s harder to find deals for me personally) but the RUclips scene has definitely contributed to rising prices. I had an obscure PS4 game on auction on eBay (thought it was on “Buy it Now”) and it didn’t move for weeks and then Metal Jesus Rocks did a video on it as a hidden gem and it sold that same week for FOUR TIMES what I thought was the buy it now price.

    Right or wrong, resellers are essentially making money at the expense of somebody else. Essentially the same reason people just destroy game stop for the amount they pay people for their games. Caleb is just essentially a one-man mobile game stop. The only part I dislike is the exchange between resellers at conventions and such that inflates the prices of games and collectibles. It prices out people from purchasing items they genuinely want. Love the pod!!

      Perfectly said. It really is that simple. It's not as bad when a collector sells games because it's occasional and they don't make their living from it (and therefore it doesn't affect market price as much). People dislike middlemen in any industry because the mindset is that they just increase prices to make a profit without adding any value.

    Caleb is super right, not to hate on Kody with a k but look at him. He is the definition of an underdog. He is flipping crazy returns and is getting so much love, in a couple years, people are going to hate him due to the fact that he is ripping ppl off, he’s personality is what saving him. Again, I’m not hating because I do bait trades too but just goes to show how people are so biased

    I've been collecting since around 2012, way before I knew it had a huge community on RUclips, didn't discover it until the pandemic.
    The issue folks have with resellers and/or flippers is because at least some tangible portion of the time, they can be a net negative and affect prices going up even more than normal. At this point, it feels like a deal is unattainable unless I'm buying a LOT of games or someone's collection all at once, but that's not a reality for most and honestly it's nothing that I would do.... Resellers CAN do that because for them they're conducting business.
    I don't like the hate that Phoenix Resale gets, but I believe reselling gets conflated with scalpers, who DO suck. I will say, the prices on everything has gotten ridiculous, the offering of pennies so that you can make profit and the over reliance of Price Charting on EVERY DEAL and what you price stuff at -- it's exhausting. Best of luck to him and others because I enjoy their content generally....but I understand both sides.

    I used to watch Caleb when he was Sub 70K and thoroughly enjoyed his videos. But little by little I just didn't enjoy his behind the scenes reselling and buying practices. I get it he's a reseller he needs to pay his bills. But after personally selling off my 90 percent of my collection I genuinely felt like I was getting ripped off By Caleb himself 😂😂😂 But let's be Honest the running Joke of Pixel game squad and Other constantly calling him A scumbag reseller really isn't helping him either.

    Some of my favorite early collecting vids were of Pat the NES Punk at swap meets, and maybe that’s where you got the “scumbag” name from, but anyone who watched those and then watched Caleb basically do the thing Pat hated by getting to events early and making huge bulk deals automatically put a face to the hate.

    So I liked Caleb early on and still like his stuff but I do find that he seems to be much more interested in the money and the flip than the collection. We almost never see him play or talk about his new favorite game or his private pick ups for his own collection. I think if he let himself be known more as a gamer/collector it would help.

    I do agree with Phoenix Resale. He's a businessman who flips games, he doesn't need to prove to anyone that he is a gamer or has a love for video games. Why does that even matter? Do all people who drive ice cream trucks love ice cream? haha. People are strange, the guy is doing his thing to take care of himself and his family that is what matters the most!

    Caleb is a bean counter. Right or wrong, people hate bean counters and as analytics continue to have a greater impact on our lives the more intense the feelings towards such things will escalate. Sports are a good microcosm of that. Many fans, athletes, and media members hate the prevalence of analytics because they see them as removing the human elements of the game.

  • @RetroVideoGamePickups

    I’ve watched a lot of Caleb’s videos and I think he gets the hate because it’s “trending” to hate on resellers in the retro community even though 90% of the community does it. He’s open and honest about it though, which goes against the “cool guy collector that has never EVER resold” mentality

  • @retro_extra
    @retro_extra 5 месяцев назад +59

    its really not that hard to understand. people dont hate caleb because theyre jealous, or because hes successful, or any of the reasons cited in this video. simply put, caleb takes something which incredibly special to people, gaming, and through his content reduces it to nothing more than a series of soulless business transactions...and often times those transactions can be questionable in terms of ethics (e.g. ripping people off) or annoying (begging people at conventions for deals). his content being the most popular in this space also encourages others to do the same, and for many people its soured the hobby of "collecting" on multiple fronts.

      Most everyone i know who collects games also sells games. So for you to think that is bs. People that think oh resellers are bad. Its part of the game. Most of those guys collecting games can tell you story's about them picking up gems for really cheap. Everyone does it. Caleb works really hard at what he does and has a bussiness doing this. So of course he's trying to buy and make something. The people calling out resellers are morons. Its part of the game. Caleb is prolly disliked buy people because he's not really cool. But you can't hate on the guy cause that. Most people who own games have sold something there doubles games they don't want. Most of the game collectors have also found games at garage sales for dirt cheap. Or when they buy games they are trying to get em as cheap as possible.

    People just want to hate. People sometimes get upset if someone finds a game for a certain price and sells it at value. They want the price you paid. But you did the work. You hunted. I never understood the hate for Caleb because he literally came into the community reselling. People shouldn’t count peoples pockets or be so concerned with other’s business. But what I realized with the gaming community and RUclips, people really become invested so there is a thin line. People also don’t really actually know people, their character, or their personality. What I realized just seeing Caleb and being around him frequently especially at SoCal is Caleb is pretty quiet. People often judge character poorly and sometimes things get misinterpreted. They think because he doesn’t socialize as much that he’s a bad person but that’s not true. He’s different. What I gather is he stays to himself and talk to who he wants. Nothing wrong with it. Another great episode fellas! Salute to everyone there. All great guys that I can vouch for

    I am a gamer and a TCG collector.. you can definitely be, at the same time. A collector and a reseller. And also, Chris. thought that was a real interesting comparisons you made. With an older show like American pickers (Pawn Stars too). Anytime I was with my aunt and younger cousin. And we drive by a an old barn (here in the Midwest). My cousin would always ask my auntie if we could pull over and do some pickin’ 🤣😂 I also give a lot of credit to the store Round Two and their movement, that they created with vintage, during my teen years. Vintage will never be “old”!

I look forward to your videos every week that even my wife gets mad when I watch a new video without her 😂! I’m currently in the unknown if I’m going to be let go from my healthcare job of 10 years that it’s thanks to your videos and your positive energy that you inspired me to get out there and find things to help fund my video game collection and build a nest egg. You all really do make a difference in my life so god bless and thank you all for everything!

    For those people who say you have to earn the right to make money off video games, you can shove it. I found a rob the robot, complete in-box with inserts, and in great condition for $40. A week later, I sold it, and i will do it again in a heartbeat. I'm a gamer since the 80s, but money talks.

    I look at it a little different, I see 2 people Caleb and Phoenix Resale. The person and the businessman are different, how people conduct themselves as a business owner and a person can be different. Businesses decisions are just that business decisions, don’t forget that and don’t make business decisions with emotion, that’s not good for a business. I like to think people wouldn’t judge someone based off of business decisions, but sadly that’s how it works some people IMO for some reason can’t separate the two. I like both, I respect the candor and appreciate it. Every CEO for every company makes tough decisions, that are not popular, for the health of the business and its employees. Keep your head up!

    There are segments of people that hate things, just because a majority loves it. Take Ocarina of Time for example. 95% love it. 5% hate it beyond comprehension

  • @stricnine69
    @stricnine69 5 месяцев назад

    I think the majority of hate for resellers comes from collectors, because everyone hates the middleman. Collectors want to pay the prices that are as low as possible to keep the item for themselves. Resellers want to pay the lowest price possible to make as much as possible when it's resold. The reason I don't mind a reseller is because I'm not going to go out to the yard sales and the swap meets and thrift stores looking for this stuff. So in my opinion the money they make off the item is justified for the time it takes to go search for all this stuff.
