I had the misfortune to be in Jerusalem during Yom Kippur, no food, drink, taxis, buses, nothing.
On the second day we, my wife and I, decided to go to the Arab quarter for food, we were getting some decidedly funny looks from the street sellers, and their customers.
We go to the first stall that sells food, and the seller asks where we come from, are we Americans, no we are from Scotland I tell him. He told us he had never met someone from Scotland before, starts shouting for the other stallholders to come and meet us.
They fed us that day and the next, plus gave us food for the rest of the day away with us, and never charged us for it, wonderful people and so interesting.

@Dan Morgan I think you've misunderstood him from a short. Try watching the whole video.
He's not presenting a theory of all Jews and Palestinians in that area. He's specifically talking about the group of Arabs he met and the Orthodox Jewish family he stayed with. Those two small groups are the "they" who are scared of each other.
I rewatched the video to make sure.
Of course, he could be lying about his whole experience. He may never have been to the Arab quarters. He may have never met that nice group of Arabs who are scared of all Orthodox Jews.
If he did lie, then his Israel experience doesn't back up his claim that there are always people on both sides in a conflict that could speak to and even get along with some on the other side, and that their blanket fear is providing an obstacle to that.

Third parties who are judged as being neutral (despite being seen as likely-to-be partial to one side) can move between these spaces. For example, Jews, who often have problems in Muslim-majority countries, don't have problems travelling in the Balkans or the Southern Caucasus at all (despite there being a few Muslim-majority countries there) because Jews are viewed as neutral in the Orthodox vs. Catholic vs. Armenian vs. Muslim fratricide in those regions. True we cannot blame the new generation, but as an originally palestinian person who’s family was almost massacred by israel and fled the country when the occupation was happening, I meet young people all over the world who are from Israel and I have this internal conflict, one part of me says that its not the fault of this person, they were just born and raised there, but at the same time, in a year or two they will probably be in the army killing helpless people again, how can I ignore all of that and just be kind to them? You cannot expect peace when all you bring to the table is terrorism, inhumanity, and lying and manipulation through the fake media that YOU control. Just check the casualty counts and number of women and children and you will know that’s its not a conflict nor it can be just hugged and kissed away, peoples houses were demolished and they have nowhere to go to

      @chrisandlizsizemore8172 Год назад

What's the outlier and average? You're assuming his anecdote is the outlier, but you can also surmise the outlier is the negative fear mongering.
So which is it? Just because there's a stereotype for certain cultures doesn't necessarily equate to the norm. In fact, many stereotypes are made thru mass media feeding us with the outliers daily.
The minority on the internet speaks the loudest; news media blasts eye-catching and scary things about the world. That's where we often begin to develop our opinions on others and other countries. Not from our personal experience, but from media that profits off of fear.
For my own personal experience, living in the middle east and china, everyone I ran into is just living their lives the best they can; trying to provide for their families. Despite what TV and internet says, despite what their government might say.
Because of this, I tend to lean into the thought that the outlier is the stereotyping of danger and fear; the average is what he personally experienced. I can relate because I've seen the same.

@@chrisandlizsizemore8172 You must be a social scientist...One data point cannot be an average..agreed? So this anectode can also be neither and your false dichotomy as it being either outlier or average is wrong.
I'm just observing that this "professor" lectures his students with this neat anecdote without providing the slightest evidence. Personal stories are useless, it's not data, that's table talk.
Sociali scientist, especially sociologists frequently argue in this manner. It stems from the fact that sociology has stopped being a science with the advent of Weber and other idealist type social scientists ultimately inspired by Marx.
Just look what Frankfurt school did. They did only author one empirical study in about 100y - the authoritarian personality by Adorno. The study is methodologically flawed beyond belief and completely useless, yet it is their best work.
In another video this "professor" argues that the gender ideology is true since it fits the neat story of reincarnation prevalent for example in Hindu religion.
This is just ridiculous beyond belief but since this idiots have neat stories it seems to captivate quite a lot of people.
To round it off. The Frankfurt school not only achieved absolutely nothing, they tried to create a method - named Critical theory - which would only allow questions to be answered in a Marxist framework. In other words, change the epistemological basis for what counts as facts - opposed to the scientific method - in the social sciences.
This is the biggest piece of propaganda in human history.

Sadly everywhere you go this is the norm. You respect the country and speak their language. In America for some reason we don't expect people to extend americans that courtesy. I just came back from a latin American country and what I learned is that the people in this country will fake that they don't understand you unless you speak their language almost perfectly no broken spanish. For example I went into a supermarket to buy a pair of glasses. I couldn't find them so I went to a women at the register in that department, I know some spanish so I took off the glasses
and said Politely Queiro, glasses while pointing at them. She pretends to be puzzled and another guy about two feet away she looks over at him looking puzzled and he looks back at me faking being puzzled, The girl summons some other girl from the back and she approaches me I point too the glasses without speaking and she takes me to them. While Im looking for the glasses I glance over at them and they are looking at me and laughing their asses off. However unlike people in the US I don't think they are racist just aholes. It didn't bother me because it was similar to two or three instances where I ran into this without the laughter. I experienced this in the immigration office as well.

He had fought oppression, racism and bigotry of any kind all his life. So when we went, I promise you that we were given exact the same advice about the Arab quarter, and the West Bank. We too just had to go and visit these places despite these warnings. We too were welcomed with open arms in both areas. The warnings of us being at risk in these places couldn’t have been further from the truth. Although at the time it was true that there was a sense of great tension on the Wear Bank. But none of this was directed at us. It was so sad that these things were being spread in a way that fear and bigotry grows to such monumental levels. I hope with all my heart that the divides will one day be closed, and people can live without fear, and in peace.
