- Musician reacts to Ren - Hi Ren for the first time and I was completely speechless and tearing up. Very powerful song with a really important message. As someone who has worked in the mental health industry before, I know it is so important to bring attention and awareness to it because there is still such a stigma. This isn't the type of song I'd usually listen to, but I'm very glad it exists and it was really chilling to listen to. Forget about the copyrights, Ren is actually encouraging reactors, sometimes even subscribing to their channels and checking out their own original content.
Short outline of Ren’s career:
While studying in Bath and halfway through his first album with Sony he started to experience serious health issues. Pain, extreme fatigue… No cause was found and doctors explained it as caused by mental issues. Medication, therapy - nothing helped. For years bedridden up to 23 hours a day. Could not finish the album so the contract with Sony eventually expired.
After many years finally diagnosed with Lyme disease. Lucky enough to get the right care and a stem cell transplant, but irreversible damage was already done. However he was well enough to start performing again as a solo artist, in the band The Big Push and in colloboration with artists like Sam Tompkins and Chinchilla.
He is currently undergoing treatment in Canada for the damage caused by the neglecteded Lyme disease.
By now he has a wast back catalogue of material on You Tube and Spotify. Many call it a rabbit hole. I disagree, it is a Gold mine of original material and covers spanning multiple genres.

Here is some additional information on Ren's story that I gathered from old newspaper interviews, articles, and Ren's livestreams and posts where he discussed his condition. Ren Erin Gill is a British musician/independent artist; born in Wales on March 29, 1990; he eventually moved to Brighton. Ren pursued a career in music from an early age. In 2009, while studying music performance at Bath Spa University, Ren began to experience health issues and was struggling to attend his lectures. In 2010, he was signed by Sony Records and was working on an album when his health deteriorated to the point where he was unable to continue and subsequently dropped by Sony.
Ren's illness often kept him in bed for up to 23 hours daily. Ren was initially misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome, which led him to experience psychosis and develop PTSD. It would take seven years before a doctor in Belgium finally correctly diagnosed Ren with autoimmunity, Lyme disease, and resulting damage to the brain, organs, joints, and PTSD. Ren eventually underwent stem cell therapy in the United States, which improved his health, but it has not been a cure.
Ren is currently in Calgary, Canada for more treatments, including surgeries, and will have to be there for at least six months (Summer of 2023) undergoing IV and other interventions five days a week. Ren recently underwent wisdom tooth removal and cavitation surgery. In addition, his Canadian doctor discovered that Ren also developed a condition called Mast Cell Activation Disorder (MCAD), which has affected the myelin sheath in his brain, his thyroid, adrenals as well as his bones/joints. Now, Ren is receiving additional treatments for this previously undiagnosed condition.

Ren is an artist with something to say to the world, and his work is important in these troubling times. Thank you! I've been yelling into the phone... Super Fan, that's lazy, also dealing with autoimmune disorder, Lyme's, and MANY underlining issues ie adrenal deficiency, endometriosis, Testing for cysts etc in my GI tract that causes me daily pain and test for cancer. I also struggle from a form of PTSD, called PTDD, (Post Traumatic Depression Disorder), and a form of psychosis do to amplified and chronic anxiety, mental struggles, and I just turned 41 and already have early onset dementia do to the medications I've been on since I was 12..... Yada yada.
I discovered Ren about a year ago and he makes me feel like someone in this world is telling my story. 🥹
Also, when I'm well enough, I love being right in the middle of the local music scene and I'm in love with busking!! That boy has major talent, and very obvious, due to me attending some of the same; that he has had great musical training! 🙌 Right from the first time I ever heard one of his songs, I knew I had found something and someone very talented and takes that talent to the streets for the locals to enjoy, not asking for a thing.💚 THAT is exactly what you need to do in life when you are ill all the time. And it's not another preachy story about how life is short, it's more about in the moment, especially when you don't know how you're going to feel each day, so when you get a good day, you take it and do anything that is going to make that day feel magical and make you feel alive doing what you love and sharing it with those around you, as we are human, And that IS what we do! 🙏🦋

Ren's a once in a generation level of talent. This performance was performed and recorded live, start to finish with the only cut falling right before he begins the spoken word section. He produces everything himself - the writing, instrumentation, vocals, and the videos. His singing voice is ridiculously good. I highly recommend, "Chalk Outlines (live with Chinchilla) and "Humble (feat. Eden Nash)"
Perfect Scott. I love Humble and Chalk Outlines - well everything but I come back to those most often. Also, Ocean and Hold On. So many but love those.
The fact that it was performed live doesn't mean that there were no cuts. The video is edited from two separate takes with cuts all along while audio was still recorded live. Samuel Perry-Falvey who filmed it, has clarified that in the comments of Jonathan Hiller's reaction to Hi Ren.

Ren is absolutely the most unique and diverse musical artist I’ve seen in a long time. Can he rap? Oh, yes. Can he sing? Oh boy, yea he does. Can he collaborate with others? Wait till you see him collaborate with Chinchilla, Sam, Tompkins, and Eden Nash. His band, The Big Push has some fantastic covers.
His busking is magic.

I’ve lost count how many times I’ve listened to REN and REN reactions videos but I think you have captured all of them in one video
I loved how you talked about his darker side weaponizing the things that make him feel good about himself. It's how abusive partners gain control in relationships, and it's often how we undermine ourselves in our own inner dialogues. You're the first reactor I've seen mention it.

What I love about Ren is that is that he is an AMAZING artist but he was misdiagnosed at a young age and the subsequent mental issues because of it. All over Lyme Disease. He's had a very rough early life and shows how much he's grown from it

I think you need to realise it’s not mental illness. It’s the normal human condition. Everyone struggles with all sorts of things. You yourself no doubt struggle thinking your voice isn’t good enough and then you also have the belief that is is. It’s a human thing to try to manage both sides of yourself it’s the eternal struggle to accept the fact that you need to manage both the hope and the doubt that everyone lives with. It’s becoming a well rounded mentally rounded person.
You don't need to worry about copywrites with Ren, he loves the reactor community, often joins in the comments and has talked and reviewed reactors on RUclips.
I do hope you go a full dive on Ren, he has the heavy songs like this, but he also plays with a band called The Big Push that is fantastic along with being an excellent rapper along with some great stuff with other singers. Far too much to list here. Just do some searches on RUclips, if the title sounds good, go ahead and react because it is good.

You weren't speechless, you articulated your observations and feelings very well...
It's not just victims, it is also students. You don't have to be a victim, suffering sucks, but it can be a marvelous teacher. I am a person who has dealt with mental illness and has also studies psychology and have spent many years using my experience to teach others how to be a student instead of a victim. There is hope, real hope, not some vague wishful possibility that things might get better, that's not hope. Hope is a clear detailed image of what life looks like when living the highest version of yourself. That visualization is what has allowed me to live my best life.
ren is off the scales good
This is the kind of artistry that gives "broken" people hope. Ren, through this performance piece, has become to a lot of people exactly what he stated in the song, "...the voice that you hear when you loosen the noose on the rope". So powerful, so impactful. The song structure itself is incredible. It starts off as a battle between his positive (Angel) and negative (Demon) aspects, the negative then makes an overpowering last ditch effort to reign supreme, tearing free and trying to take control, but ultimately fails as the final act, being the "God" aspect, emerges Triumphant, though still acknowledging and accepting that it will ALWAYS be a battle because we are all "a coin with 2 different sides". It's a beautifully cathartic and raw musical masterpiece. Ren is truly special. Welcome to the Ren rabbit-hole, it's a trip worth taking. This was the 4th take he did and yes, it was done live. Wait until you hear some of his other stuff, especially his storytelling ("The Tale of Jenny & Screech"). You haven't even touched the breadth of this young man's talent yet.
The pig character (imo) represents the doctors and therapist who have essentially butchered him for years through their misdiagnosis. It's the system that focuses on peddling more pills than on genuinely trying to help to fix broken/ill people, caring more about profit than individual health. The bastardization of the hippocratic oath. He literally thought he was going insane because he was told repeatedly that the pain and symptoms he was experiencing were all in his head (psychosomatic). He had reached a point where he literally resigned himself to dying before he reached 30. Turns out he had Lyme's disease the whole time and it ran rampant through his system for 10 years, even to the point of causing brain damage. Ironically, if Ren hadn't gone through what he has, would he have ever made the art he has? There's no question that his suffering has shaped his music and now he's finally getting the recognition he undoubtedly deserves. I've said it before, I'll say it again, Ren is special.

Thanks for the reaction. I didn't like rap until I heard this song and then watched Knox Hill reacting to Ren because he clearly explains what's going on and what's being said so I feel I understand the genre and like it. I'd highly recommend Ren's "Genesis". It's my favorite besides Hi Ren.

Ren was wrongly diagnosed and was treated for mental illness, but he persisted and eventually he was correctly diagnosed with Lyme Disease, then his recovery started.

I loved your in-depth meaningful reaction. I have watched 100's of reactions to this amazing performance but still love listening to new reactions and yours certainly didn't disappoint. I really highly recommend Chalk outlines LIVE with Chinchilla it really is stunning. Also Chinchilla doing Fingers Live is a MUST. Then there are about another 200 must watch Ren tracks and Chinchilla's new track Gone Little Girl .

I've been in therapy for over 10 years, with meds, and the struggle is real, and I'm a week away from an appointment I made 4 months ago just to change a med that may need to be changed after 2 weeks and wait for another 4 months while I feel like this dude. I have a wife and 2 awesome kiddos, stay home dad who just wants a life of peace but still live with these arguments in my head all damn day. One of the things my therapist has me do is listen to things like this that are emotionally charged while doing brainspotting on my own. At the point I can listen without feeling and just have it as knowledge that doesn't affect my body, I can move on from it and just enjoy it as a song. I have cpsd, generalized anxiety, and recently diagnosed adult adhd. I need to get that fixed as I homeschool a child with adhd. Meds will help me hopefully give her the tools without needing meds. Anyone else dealing with this, just keep going. My son turns 11 months next week and it's amazing to think on the innocence, and feel the love coming back as I hold him, like a feedback loop. If you feel anxiety, smile at a baby, they will smile back. If you don't have one, imagine yourself as a baby with no guilt, no pain, no loss, and only the love of your dad and mom and big sisser.

There's a pattern to the reactions of the Content creators who do reaction videos.
And it's kind of beautiful.
Imagine a story being told.. and the longer you stay to hear that story
The more you find the story relates to yourself,
They pause it and make a well reasoned summary of what was heard and seen, so far
..by the end they see themselves in Ren.
Ren clicks with those on the inside going through similar strong battles mentally, as well as those on the outside who have studied and appreciated psychology of people through universities and studies.
I have seen some extremely emotional reactions for the past few months. There is an incredible array of RUclips reaction people who have reaction Hi Ren. I still tear up on some people who get so touched PERSONALLY by the song It has changed their life immediately.
Ren does encourage reactioners to play his song completely and no copyright is worried so you can do other songs anyway you want. He did just put out a new song last night called Animal Flow. However he has so many different choices it's really incredible because it's a different rabbit hole you're going to go down if you can choose. He sings freaky weird great and you should hear that part too, but this is most impressionable song. This is how you met him. Your choice is to find out if his voice is that great when you do your next one of Ren. He has style that's irresistible. He's ike a chameleon in performance in voice and and everything. Someone's going to give you a list I'm sure.
I know reactors are supposed to react, but to be candid, stopping so many times, and especially at the times you did, altered the impact of this song. I took suffered through an undiagnosed autoimmunity condition for years that made me suicidal and hopeless. I was finally able to get a diagnosis and treatment and now I too dance with this pendulum.

Very insightful reaction video. One of my favorite lines, among many, is when he says, "I realized there were no real winners and no real losers in psychological warfare. But there were victims, and there were students." I love that wisdom about how our struggles and pain teach us. He certainly has been taught by his and it has taken a very talented young man to a higher level of creativity and expression.

Hi Andrea, you're going to go into the amazing rabbit hole that is Ren after this. You do not need to worry about the copyright issue with Ren as I've seen in an interview that he does not copyright strike people.
So when you watch Sick Boi, Money Game, Jenny and Screech and Violet's Tale, Genesis etc next - keep that in mind.
Ren is an extraordinary talent, and his recent interview with Justin Hawkins (singer of The Darkness) is a very good guide as to the back story of this very unique artist.
He's also an independent artist (production, director, songwriter etc) as of know.
First time here, your musical studies have served you well. Very well analyzed! You are clearly a forward thinker and understand the struggles in our healthcare system (in US). Good for YOU. Virtual Hugs, to you.

Ren. Master storyteller, poet, musician. A stunning talent. As much as he shows in this performance, it's barely scratching the surface of his skills/talents. He's gone through a TON, but don't make the mistake that everything is explicit autobiography. He uses what he knows, as an artist, to create art. If you try to grid his lyrics onto a script of his life, you'll miss the mark. To me, his superpower is his ability to bring truth to lyrics. But truth isn't always the same as accuracy. Guernica was not an explicit portrait of war, but it tells the truth about what war is.
This inner dance of duality is not specific to mental illness. It is human nature. Some people are just more aware of their shadow than others..but everyone has a shadow self.
I've watched a lot of reaction videos and you're deffinatelyone of the best I can listen to you for hours smart , clear, and beautiful. My suggestion for more Ren songs - sick boy tale of Jenny and screech money game one and two and chalk outlines. There are so many just open up to a page and start reading, it's a wonderful journey!

This is art of transcendent beauty and an *important* song. Artists often struggle with imposter syndrome.
There’s a movie starring Olivia Munn called “Violet” that rings of this and was a transformative experience for me… just as this song also resonates.
As a person who’s never been able to escape imposter syndrome and negative self-talk, *realizing* that I can exert the strength that destructive voice questions-strength that I *know* I have-was sooo important.
It takes time to push past the negativity-to make your own voice stronger, but if anyone out there is struggling with this, please please please *know* that you can do it.
*Know* that I believe in you… but you don’t need me to-just like you don’t need the shroud of doubt that feels first of protection and then as a prison.
You are *stronger* than that voice.
You are stronger than you can *possibly* know…
until you push back with softness or aggression-your choice.

Haven’t heard a bad Ren song yet. He sing, raps, and he’s a story teller. So there are a lot of awesome songs for you to check out. Just recently released new songs Animal Flow and Illest of Our Time. If you want singing, check out How To Be Me (live) and Chalk Outlines (live), both featuring the artist Chinchilla (who is incredible), and Blind Eyed (live street performance) featuring Sam Tompkins. If you want more story telling then listen to the Tale of Jenny and Screech and Violet’s Tale (the full trilogy.) And yes, there are a whole lot more songs to check out too.

So often, mental health as a topic is really just a "no go zone" because people just don't want to deal with it. Which is why if you talk about depression/anxiety people just tell you to "suck it up" or "get over yourself" because they don't always know how to help you. This is why it's such a important topic of discussion because nobody is mentally well in this day and age because they probably don't even know what to do about their own mental problems because psychiatrists don't actually know how to treat people even when the information about said individual is readily available to better help but they then don't care enough to give the proper care to anyone other than themselves because of greed.

I think all of us have an inner monologue of self doubt and deprecation, it's part of the human condition. In the case of mental illness, that inner monologue may be larger and louder.
