- Welcome Gardeners! We are working on the orange trees today. Jason is installing some metal tree rings to match our pathway metal edging and I am dealing with some unhappy ants looking for an easy meal! I think the goats didn’t like how I treated the ants. Sorry ants! 🐐 Enjoy!

You don’t want to add dirt close to the trunk of the tree. If you want to add nutrients, you’re better off adding it out by the drip line of the canopy above. Changing the level of dirt under mature trees by the trunk and even under the canopy can actually kill it by reducing the air they must have, it smothers them. A lot of your viewers will think they can add dirt and plants in the ring. You’ll have a dead tree. My son is a certified arborist, this I know. He’d cringe seeing those tree collars pounded in. I suggest you talk to an experienced certified arborist Janey, or it’s easy to research yourself.
I came to see if anyone was discussing exposing the root flare of the trunk. Bringing soil, compost, plants, mulch, etc. up high enough to cover the root flare will degrade and slowly kill trees.
I agree Janey, larger diameter would look better😊.

First time I’ve screamed, “no don’t do it” while watching your awesome videos. Not a fan of tree rings at all. If it stops putting mulch against the tree trunk, then maybe but seems like a waste of time and resources. Always still learning.

Jason, I’d check with a tree arborist from your area. I’ve always been told that the tree roots are the size of the tree itself.. plus metal which is coming to rust around a fruit tree which y’all will be gathering g fruit to eat. Just a thought..

I think all of the sharp points hammering into the tree roots wouldn’t be good for the tree. I like the look of just the mulch raked away from tree trunk and no rings. Just my opinion but I do love all you have done, just beautiful!🥰
I agree. I can’t see the point and I’d worry about the roots. With my trees, the big roots are very close to the surface and this tiny ring would not do the trick.
It seems to me this is a product that is unnecessary. I can understand it on the paths but the raised edge is a tripping hazard in my opinion. I can’t imagine using it between a garden bed and lawn - tripping hazard and hard to edge the grass without whacking the steel edge. Nope.

I can see using the tree rings on a young newly planted tree, but seems unnecessary for an established tree of this size. The rings are also disproportionately small compared to the size of the tree so it looks a little odd. You're also potentially damaging the surface roots of the tree. I'd suggest removing and keeping a natural look around the tree.
You’ve got skills Jason! The tree rings make things look nice and tidy. I think planting some Surefire Red Begonias in the rings could be quite charming. Mini flower gardens within your large flower gardens! 🌺🇨🇦

Janey I wanted to mention about the bracelet for mosquito bites. I tried them and didn’t seem to notice a difference. But I heard coconut oil works great . So I tried the coconut oil and I was amazed. I put it on like lotion while wearing short sleeves and shorts. Those mosquitoes didn’t bother me while I worked in the yard😊. So consider giving it a try for yourself. Hope it works for you too.

Janey, ants also will feed off of scale, which can be a problem on citrus. So check your tree limbs and branches.

It looks good the only thing that I would be concerned with it going to the roots.
Nice job Jason. Janey now that the tree ring is in and the leaves are pulled away from the trunk you could also dust the area with food grade diatomaceous earth.

Janey you could use one of the taller EdgeRight tree rings to create a quasi raised planter for your Hydrangea back by the chicken coop.. also would work well for Mangaves, Agaves, Aloes etc . My Agave ovatifolia rotted last winter and something like that would have been a great solution for me.

Perfect! Physical therapists turned gardeners 💕 (🐜there are lots of ways…..squish them and wound them and spray off with water. They are smarter than us…we are in their home. Encourage them to move on🧐 they work hard,so we have to also. They will always be here.

Looks great Jason! I had no idea that those little pests would cause so many issues. I’ve been trying to grow citrus seedlings and I’ve had so much trouble with pests and spider mites I’m about ready to toss them. Luckily my brother in law lives in Arizona and he is my citrus supplier 😂

Good morning. Jason did a great job and the trees look complete with the rings around them. I do have to agree that Jason is wonderful when he is on video. Makes so easy and pleasant to listen and understand what is going to get done. I feel that the 2 feet ring around the tree is fine. You don't need a great big space around the base of the tree 2ft is perfect to keep the crown of the tree exposed and not buried. Why don't you do all the branches just to be safe instead of waiting on the other branches. Anyways love the video and just how you both work as a team.
The silver lining to you hurting your foot is Jason picking up the camera.

I’m from Indy and if I was to explain the size of our yard I’d say our property. Maybe it’s a regional thing.
I know our relatives in England refer to their whole property as their garden. In Canada, we refer to our property as our yard, and only the planted areas as the garden.

Great information about the ants and the sticky residue they leave behind. I’ve had that on a couple of plants and thought it was some type of insect but didn’t know which one. Also, the goat made me laugh. So cute.

Great job Jason! Its always so helpful to have a partner helping with garden projects. One person seems to shine at certain "chores," which you have shown us in so many videos where you shine! Its always a pleasure to hear you explain and show us your projects. I spoke to you briefly at The Greenery event asking how weird it was that people say "Hi Jason" like they know you but you don't know them. I was one of those people and kinda felt weird doing it but you were very nice and said you were getting use to it! Anyway, enjoyed this video! And great advice/ insight on proper equipment for the jobs you are doing!

Thank you so much for the aphid/ant lesson! I have three beautiful crepe Myrtle trees, and never know that’s what the sticky stuff was on my car! 😳🤢 I checked my trees, and sure enough….ants! 🐜 Know I know what to do to correct the problem! One question- won’t other things like lizards get trapped in the sticky stuff??

Janey I’m glad you got some rest.
I found ants on my tree last year, appeared to be an entire colony inside the soil layers. There was sticky stuff on the leaves that attracted the ants. Inspected the tree and leaves thinking aphids, but nope. Found small black circular hard shell dots under leaves. Upon research, found out that they were Scale Insects. They’ve done a lot of damage to my plants as well, especially my Canna lilies which apparently is what attracted them the most. So please inspect you Calla lilies and everything around that tree.

Y’all are doing amazing and are a great team! If I may suggest another method after having done the tape and sticky methods, plant things that attract ladybugs 🐞 like cilantro, dill and parsley and let them go to flower. The flowering is what attracts the ladybugs and they will make babies and take care of all your aphids in your veggies and flower gardens, including roses. This year I did this and it was the best result I saw after MANY aphids. Now I have MANY ladybugs and no more aphids. It’s fantastic!

I am nursing two small lemon trees someone gave me, it has ants farming a really bad scale infestation. Zone 9B, too. I would rather deal with aphids
