I’ll never forget hearing this for the first time. Diana Ankudinova at only 14 years old completely changed music for me with Rechenka. I’ve probably listened to it 50 times and still get chills. To me, this is musical perfection. Diana’s Rechenka has its own place in music history.
The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying. There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers. There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home. At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family. The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.
When I watch and listen to this girl, the words of the great Italian violinist and composer Niccolo Paganini come to my mind: "To make others feel, you have to feel very strongly yourself." Here she feels strongly, stronger than others.

At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. Diana was sent for singing lessons because it was thought that this might help her learn to speak without impediment. Only two years later she started singing in local theater, and in street plays and performances. And soon after was entered in a Russian TV music competition for disadvantaged children. I believe she was 15 here. I think she is now 19 so she has another 10 years or so before her voice is considered mature. As a true dramatic polyphonic contralto, I might have wished she had chosen to pursue a career in Opera, but she has said she has no desire to go in that direction. She doesn't sing a song, she performs it with her whole being.
This is a compilation of several folk songs. In the initial and final parts it is sung about the river. Here you can feel the smooth flow of the river and the echo spreading along the night forest shore. In the middle part, the heroine tells crying that she is an orphan and she will be married soon, but no one will bless her.

Ни один музыкант не рискнул бы сделать аранжировку сразу с такой сложной вокальной партией; уверен, что эта партия выстраивалась в процессе репетиций, когда всем, кто работал над этим номером, открывались настоящие вокальные и артистические возможности этой 14-ти летней девочки. It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song.

Rituals (and songs) of a Russian wedding are one of the important courses in Russian universities, where they teach history, historical ethnography, and so on. Therefore, I must correct you - all Russian wedding songs carry sadness, they express a very ancient attitude towards an important transition in a girl’s life (see the theory of transitions in ethnography), in particular her departure from her homeland to someone else’s family (clan, tribe). This has nothing to do with the theme of marrying someone you don’t love (although, of course, such meanings are added for specific cases - but as additional to the root meaning of wedding songs).

The original lead vocalist Geoff Tate was one of the greatest male singers in rock/metal music. He is a natural baritone but has unbelievable tenor range. Please check it out.

I’ll never forget hearing this for the first time. Diana Ankudinova at only 14 years old completely changed music for me with Rechenka. I’ve probably listened to it 50 times and still get chills. To me, this is musical perfection. Diana’s Rechenka has its own place in music history.
The song "Rechenka" (affectionate from the word "river") is a Russian folk ritual wedding song. There is a version that this song appeared before Christianity, and since early Christianity and paganism were closely intertwined, there are many versions of this song. It tells how an orphan girl comes to the river and prays to the spirits of nature. The song is about how my mother, father and brothers were killed by enemies, there is no one to take care of her. The river in Ancient Russia was considered the border between the world of the living and the dead. You hear an ominous whisper, it's the spirit of her late mother responding to the girl's crying.
There are about 30 variants of this song, but the content of each of the variants is based on the sad appeals of the orphan bride to her deceased parents, asking them for "blessings" and help for marriage, for family, to strangers.
There are other versions of this song, where the heroine appeals to her brothers and even to her parents with a call to return to earth in the form of a bird to her native home.
At the end of the song, the girl sails away to a strange tribe, to a strange family.
The roots of the song go back to ancient Russia, it is a very, very ancient folk folklore.
When I watch and listen to this girl, the words of the great Italian violinist and composer Niccolo Paganini come to my mind: "To make others feel, you have to feel very strongly yourself." Here she feels strongly, stronger than others.

At the age of three in the middle of Russia's far northern Winter she was abandoned, injured, at a bus stop where she was rescued and sent to an orphanage. At the age of 5 she was still traumatized and unable to speak properly. A massage therapist who visited the orphanage trying to help kids, was the first to recognize something special in this little girl, and eventually adopted her. I believe she was 15 here. I think she is now 19 so she has another 10 years or so before her voice is considered mature. As a true dramatic polyphonic contralto, I might have wished she had chosen to pursue a career in Opera, but she has said she has no desire to go in that direction. Этот номер на шоу "Ты супер" готовился долго, и хотя у меня нет никакой информации по этому поводу - всё-таки попробую поразмышлять, каким образом в итоге получилась та самая "Реченька", которой восхищаются во всём мире. It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song.

" Профессиональные плакальщицы" на Русси, а позже и в /России, вы правы как правило посещали похороны, а на свадьбах невесту обычно обряжали причесывали и.т.д. ее лучшие подруги, вот они то и плакали как бы прощаясь сосвоей подружкой, а заодно и с детством, ведь это не секрет что в те времена за муж могли отдать девушку которая еще не давно играла в куклы и в основном не спрашивая ее мнение,предпочтение и желание, даже родная мать девушки не могла повлиять на судьбу дочери, все решал отец или брат если он был, а отца не было, был жесткий патриархат.Впрочем так было во многих странах, а в некоторых мусульманских так и до сих пор.

An old Russian folk song telling the story of an orhan girl who goes to the river ( the boundary between the living and the dead ) to seek a blessing from her deceased Mother for marriage....this performance is especially poignant, as Diana was abandoned as a child and raised in a Russian orphanage.....Diana is a natural Contralto which, as you know, is the lowest female vocalist's register....this performance alone should make us all recognize and appreciate the talent of performers from the "world music" genre.....
