Saw this in the theatre when it came out, and "I am Iron Man" was such a nice twist from every other secret identity superhero movie... it still gives me goosebumps even seeing it now. But yeah, RDJ playing him as the "lovable jerk" is perfect, becoming a hero doesn't change him from that, he's like that one friend we all have that we're sometimes embarassed about

What I liked most about this movie is that they used the original origin story but just changed the time. When the comic first came out it was during the Vietnam War. Tony was captured by the North Vietnamese and with the help of a fellow prisoner (who voluntarily died giving Tony the distraction he needed for his escape) he built the first very clunky Iron Man suit that looked very much like the one in the beginning of the movie. Just from that first scene, and the story of Yinsen as he's dying, I knew I was going to like what they were doing with this movie.

    • @max_2da_max336

The fact that this came out in '08, in peak US-in-Iraq-and-Afghanistan as not only a modernization of the original story but also emphasizing the wartime profiteering/ capitalism as the ultimate baddie really sets it apart. I don't think there was nearly as much (any) of that double-dealing that we saw with Obadiah in Vietnam (although I might be mistaken), so to really emphasize that the warmongers in charge of arms dealing were unquestionably the bad guys made a truly impactful statement that set the stage for what the MCU could be and do.

@@WJS774 Raytheon didn't have to. The United States invaded sovereign nations with no involvement in 9/11 at the behest of warmongers affiliated with Raytheon, Halliburton, and beyond. Those companies then profited tremendously at the expense of innocent lives. The villainy was less so selling arms to terrorists and more so the furtherance of endless warmongering/ further loss of innocent life.

Right at the start, when the convoy is ambushed, you notice that Tony asks the soldiers "Wait! Give me a gun!"? He doesn't want to just cower in the truck while other men risk their lives to protect him, and in a deleted scene he does find a gun and joins the fight. Because of course he knows how to handle a rifle, he's a weapons guy. Tony Stark was a hero before he became Iron Man.

Burger King didn't pay anything for the product placement, it was at Robert Downey Jr's request that BK got that cameo, as he credits Burger King with saving his life. It was while eating a Burger King burger when he realized that even something as simple as eating a burger could no longer give him joy, and that he needed help to get clean, before it was too late.

In an out of jail and rehab, etc. One night down on his luck he found himself in Burger King and had what he called "The worst burger he ever had" and somehow from that point on he, with his wife's support, turned his life and his career around.

this film is a perfect character study. as you may know, he does appear in further films. his character is so well developed that you can see the origins of all his later behaviors in this film. this film made people declare they were "TEAM STARK". oh yes release order. no ifs ands or buts. and every time you find one that feels off, just wait, the next will reingage you. just keep going. up until this very year, it hasnt let up. some of their best work was some of their more recent work. and thats saying a lot. the films play into each other. this is how the comics were written, as one long storyline over literally decades. the other comic book company, DC, didnt do that so much, and they didnt develop the fandom that marvel had.

And it's a crime since Lee was little more than a thief of the credit and money of the artists who largely created the characters and work. But few MCU fans know Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko and the many Marvel creators thanks to Lee's lies and the MCU's fans uninterested in facts but instead in corporate legend that justifies not retroactively paying their artists/creators.

Well...u need to know why Stan Lee is called a legend by all comic book fans even among DC.
And it's not about creating marvel or anything like that.
He's the reason that comic books still exists today. He did lot to comic world than just writing comics.

    • @NoHandleGrr
      @NoHandleGrr 2 года назад

@@chamathnadeeshan4008: "He's the reason that comic books still exists today."
That's utter nonsense. First, the guy who save Timely/Atlas/Marvel was Jack Kirby, not Stan Lee.
Second, even if that company and Martin Goodman had vanished, DC's sales figure were largely vastly greater than Marvel's by far even against Marvel's biggest sellers. Marvel's sales were larger in aggregate at times, but less so when measured comic by comic.
Thirdly, the only reason Marvel even survived the late Seventies, according to Jim Shooter, was Roy Thomas getting the STAR WARS license. (Getting the Conan license also helped; Marvel's biggest sellers tended to be material they licensed, rather than creating.)
You can look all this up for yourself.
I also recommend Sean Howe's MARVEL COMICS: THE INSIDE STORY and Abraham Riesman 's "True Believer: The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee," among other good researched histories debunking Lee's legends and lies.
Stan Lee's one great talent was promotion. He did very little actual creating if one looks at the facts and not his claims.

For a little bit of perspective, director Jon Favreau, who also played limo driver Happy Hogan, knew he wanted Downey to play Tony Stark. The studio wasn't sold on Downey. Downey had had a substance abuse problem, and had previously been kind of unreliable. A brilliant actor but a big risk to base a potential franchise on. There were a couple of other actors that the studio thought might fit the role and be more stable, like Tom Cruise , Nicholas Cage, or Sam Rockwell. But Favreau insisted that Downey was the guy. Turned out Favreau was right. One thing that can be said about Marvel is that almost without exception, their casting has been spot on in every project.

    All I'll say is
    1. Don't listen to naysayers
    2. Release order is critical to how they build the world. It looks like you already missed Incredible Hulk, but it's not too late to go back
    3. Always stay until the end of the credits
    4. Look for Silver Age writer and co-creator of many of the characters Stan Lee as a cameo in each film until his passing in the late 2010s (in this film, he's mistaken by Tony for Playboy founder Hugh Hefner)
    5. While they aren't technically part of the MCU, some later entries expect you to be somewhat familiar with the Spider-Man films by Sam Raimi, the Amazing Spider-Man films by Marc Webb, the X-Men series from 20th Century Fox, and at least the first season of the Netflix show Daredevil (now on Disney+), so checking those out at some point when you have the time is useful
    6. It seems daunting after so many years and so many entries, but if you pace yourself you're in for a hell of a ride.

"why did he do that? She went in.." Well let me tell you something about trauma. Everyone deals with it different. Tony feels like he's never really had anyone since he was a teenager. His parents died when he was young, he was taken care of kind of by people in his house and Obediah, but that's not love, that's taking care of someone because of their name. He's had flings all over the place, but that's not relationships. The only one he's ever had is himself. Hard to be vulnerable and let someone you actually care about in like he was about too with Pepper at the party. Not to mention his mental bout, because while they used it against him, there's no doubt he suffers from PTSD in this movie and others. Tony's story is not one of glory, but trauma, sadness, and learning to love again and let others into his life.

ALWAYS watch these in theatrical release order, otherwise it won't make much sense.
Also, in the comics, that was the story that he used to protect his identity, that Iron Man was his 'bodyguard' and not actually him. Thought that was a nice nod to it in that last scene. And what Rhodey means by 'next time, baby' is that he also gets a suit and becomes the War Machine, my personal favorite. Just picture Iron Man in black and grey, with ALL THE GUNS

Just to give you a heads up, Rhodey is recast in future movies. He’s replaced by Don Cheadle who plays the character a lot better

Interesting note about his first meal after getting back being Burger King. That was for a reason that was personal to Robert Downey Junior. Now, what I’m about to say next is completely relying on my memory, so some elements may or may not be accurate. If I remember correctly, he used to have quite the drug problem. At some point, while high on who knows what, he went and got a burger from Burger King. In his drug addled state, that burger tasted so horrible to him that he immediately threw in into the sea, along with every drug in his car, and almost immediately started to turn his life around. Now, since I don’t know how accurate my memory of this story is, I encourage you to look it up for yourself.
Anyway, that’s something to know about the MCU: Even some of the most minor details have some level of significance, and many things are referenced in later films.

I recently got into the MCU and bought the box sets of Phase 1 to 3. I hadn't a clue what to watch and in what order. So it was handy having them laid out in the boxes first to last (well there's going to be more Phases up to 6).

Hey, Colette! Welcome to the Marvel Cinematic Universe! "Iron Man" is the kick-off to a spectacular cinematic journey that altered the industry paradigm. The MCU is a series of 20+ interrelated films culminating in a huge 2-part movie event! The movies are all based on Marvel Comics characters who were co-created beginning in 1961 by editor/writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. Unlike other comic universes, the Marvel Universe is set in our world with many of the principals residing in New York City. What is distinctive about the Marvel pantheon is that the characters all have feet of clay; they struggle to measure up to the burden of power. Stan, Jack and artist Don Heck introduced Iron Man in 1963 in the anthology title "Tales of Suspense" expressly modeling the character on Howard Hughes and deliberately going against the anti-establishment grain of the '60's by making him a capitalist arms dealer. Insulated by wealth and ego, the epiphany he experiences and the life-threatening wound he incurs as a result of his captivity made him vulnerable and relatable to a readership predisposed to mistrusting a quintessential captain of industry. Moreover, Tony, in the comics, is also humanized by being an inveterate alcoholic which is barely alluded to in the films. The trick worked and the dichotomy hooked readers. Reframing his captors from Vietnamese Communist guerrillas in the comics to Afghan Islamicist mujahideen, the first Iron Man film adapts Tony's origin and the "Iron Monger" story arc.
Iron Man was a second tier Marvel character known famously for his extravagant wealth and his endless struggle with alcoholism. Jon Favreau was an indie writer/director with one mainstream comedy hit, "Elf", under his belt. Robert Downey, Jr. was a respected former Brat Packer whose bankable days were behind him and who was then known more for drug addiction, womanizing and a motor mouth. This film should not have worked. After an aborted attempt at a shared universe with the Hulk in 2003 directed by serious auteur Ang Lee, Marvel threw the dice with Tony Stark and improbably won! It was kismet. Very rarely does an actor so ideally match a role. Downey, Jr. was BORN to play Tony Stark. His arc in the MCU is one of the best character developments I've ever seen in cinema. Remember Yinsen's last words, "Don't waste your life.", because Stark never forgets them.
The cast is excellent. To support RDJ, Oscar-winner Jeff Bridges was brought aboard as Obadiah Stane setting a precedent of enlisting top-tier talent for MCU films. Gwyneth Paltrow as Virginia 'Pepper' Potts, Terrence Howard as Lt. Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Paul Bettany as disembodied JARVIS and director Jon Favreau himself as Harold 'Happy' Hogan round out the Stark stable. Shaun Toub is affecting as Stark's savior Yinsen and Faran Tahir brings gravitas as Ten Rings terrorist Raza. Unflappable Clark Gregg introduces SHIELD as Agent Phil Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson makes his first appearance as Director Nick Fury. Leslie Bibb has a bit part as ambitious journalist Christine Everhart as does Tim Guinee as USAF Major Allen.
    TRIVIA:
    1. As a tribute to Howard Hughes, who served as a template for both Howard and Tony Stark, production was based in the former Hughes Company soundstages in Playa Vista. Tony's garage/lab is the area where Hughes assembled the H-4 Hercules airplane aka 'The Spruce Goose'.
    EASTER EGGS:
    1. The Ten Rings terrorist organization refers to the ten alien rings worn by traditional Stark nemesis, The Mandarin, who is showcased later in the saga.
    2. Raza, leader of the terror cell, is named after but bears no resemblance to a cyborg space pirate from the comics who is part of a crew of interstellar corsairs and X-Men allies known as the Starjammers.
    3. Former child actor Peter Billingsley from "A Christmas Story" plays the technician chewed out by Stane who returns with a grievance against Stark Industries in "Spider-Man: Far From Home"!
    4. JARVIS is an acronym for 'Just A Rather Very Intelligent System'! The namesake for Tony's operating system is the human butler who looked after him as a child and who serves the Avengers in the comics: Edwin Jarvis. Mr. Jarvis plays a significant role in the TV series "Agent Carter" portrayed by James D'Arcy.
    5. If viewed chronologically, then these are the second appearances of Coulson and Fury in the saga.
    CAMEO:
    1. Co-creator STAN LEE shows up in every Marvel movie for a Hitchcock-style CAMEO! In "Iron Man", he's the elderly gent in the smoking jacket with his arms around two nubile blondes who gets mistaken for Hugh Hefner by Tony on the red carpet! Lol.
    END-CREDIT SCENE:
    1. Almost all Marvel movies have multiple bonus scenes during and after the credits. The "Iron Man" end-credit scene shows Nick Fury approach Tony Stark about the Avenger Initiative.
The next chronological stop in the MCU is "Iron Man 2" and its companion One-Shot "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor's Hammer" found on DPlus.
