Just completed this tutorial with a good measure of success. I'm getting the hang of how wet things have to be at different points in the process. I also went out to buy some good cadmium yellow and red. I'm so glad I did. The result would have been truly bad without them. And I saw the difference in the behavior of student grade cheap paint and pigments the level of Daniel Smith watercolors. Luckily, Paul uses a lot of cobalt blue, so my cheapo tube will run out fast and then I can justify buying a good one! LOL. Thanks you. This was fun to do and very accessible with your explanations.

Thank you Mr Clark. I really love this painting, and watching you doing these, are always meditative. I am not there yet, but perhaps I can paint something likely for Christmas. Your snow fall, was one of your better splats ever. I always laugh, when it comes to "splatting". As an old swede, this reminds me of Jenny Nyströms paintings, that we are so familiar with. They becomes popular every Christmas since many, many years. Now, I begin to know how she may have done them. I could have swore on that this was one of her's. I am so impressed of your skills, so hundreds of thanks for your tutorials. I miss alizarin crimson, but uses W&N permanent carmin, and orange, and sometimes yellow, and violet for mixing red. I also miss raw sienna, but uses ochre, and raw umber, burnt sienna, burnt umber for mixing such. It looses some transparency sometimes. Do you think I should get alizarin crimson? In swedish it was called "krapplack" and were made from bugs.
Many years ago, I painted furnitures and wood-crafts in home made "egg-oil temperas" by grinding pigments with either linseed oil, or tempera, and I did not see much difference by the "gold ochre" and the "raw sienna", though the sienna just was some slightly more brown, so I did not buy that anymore. A little hint of burnt ochre, and it was there anyway.
The raw umber then, was quite green, and very usable, but at W&N it is just medium brown. I happen to love the earth colours, and uses them as far they reach, before using the chemical made.
I miss "earth green", that is a subtile grey/green somewhat darker than olives, very burnt ochres like "english red", and "caput-mortum", that looks like ox-blood turning into violet.
All those pigments was sold for wall paints, outdoor/indoor many years ago, and was not of the finest milled, but it is doable, and I have tried them in oil, tempera, and acrylics, and they works.
The stay stable for light many years even outdoors. Watercolors uses gum-arabicum as a binder, and for me it sounds no worse than making an oilpaint, or tempera.. Have you ever tried such?
Sometimes granulating is preferable, also. Warm greetings.

Beautiful! Personally I prefer the muted shadows and suggested details to the darker additions but that’s just me. And probably because I couldn’t do it anywhere as good as you! 😁

I am so grateful to have found your videos. I have learned so much from you, and your sense of humour is so refreshing, as so many other watercolour tutorials get a bit dull.
If I could ask Santa for one thing, it would be a video on painting different types and textures of fur. I could really use some guidance for my pet portraits!
