Believe it or not, this and Tommy the Cat are fairly easy to sing over because of the continuous 16th notes. It’s rhythm that makes for difficult singing/playing. I know it sounds weird but Walking On The Moon is harder.
This is my favorite warmup and comfort song to practice on bass. I've practiced it hundreds of times at this point and memorize every tiny bit of the whole song. But the excersise it gives my hands on the stuff I want to create is just too good
Ayyyyeeee John the fisherman!! Awesome! Thanks for doing more Claypool baselines. Just gonna put this out there, learning how to play “one better” or “lust strings” or anything on whales of woe or stuff from the Lennon Claypool delerium would be awesome. Long story short: MORE CLAYPOOL!!!!
the original use of cyanoacrylate iirc, was in the military during the vietnam conflict, as an emergency wound closer on the battlefield for less severe cuts or wounds
Definitely not a beginner song lol… but you think this is one is bad, try playing Professor Nutbutter’s house of treats the way he does…. I feel like I’m going to get carpel tunnel playing that one. Makes John seem easy in comparison.
Dude... I wish that a tutorial video like this existed around a decade ago when I was first getting into bass and Primus. Also your bass tone is certified Claypoolian-grade sir. Thanks for making this video!
I saw your earlier video back in April, I’ve been practicing since and finally just last month I would say I can play the whole song with no problem. It’s a hard song
@@Blakeadam52 Yeah that's a good description of him. He is indeed very creative. I think best bassist (if there is such a thing) goes to probably Victor Wooten or Charles Berthoud.
Can you please do a tutorial for RHCP's Righteous and the Wicked? Loved the way you broke down Stevie Wonder's Sir Duke so itll be great to see u teach my fave RHCP song
Hey boss, any tips on strengthening your pinky finger for chords? I've been a novice punk rocker my entire life, but I'm double jointed and my pinky pops in and out at the upper knuckle upon bending it so its hard for me to use it. Any tips? Awesome vid!
The 4th note (1st fingerpicked note after chords) is DEFINITELY a G not a G#/Ab. Everyone plays this wrong because the tab on the internet is wrong. Watch any video of Les playing it, or play along with the record and you'll hear the G# clashes. The rest is right though.
this song indeed is painful, but its not my pinky itself that hurts, its the part below my pinky on the side of fretting my hand down to my wrist (i guess the muscle is called abductor digiti minimi) i would say american life is more draining though and just makes my hand feel tired and sore

Hey Mark I was wondering if you can do a video on how to do portrait of tracy by jaco
Loved learning this song with a cut on my finger, a really humbling experience
The first time I cut my finger was playing "Jerry was a race car driver"
Playing that is one thing. Playing AND singing is a whole other level.🍻

les is a total package: unique tone, awesome playing, great songs and sings while doing all this. what a bastard!
he has a ton of unique tones...
"sings"
@@yttri9876 Fair point, but what about the wacky stage walks ?
Primus Sucks!
@@boostgeorgethen why are you here?

This is a great breakdown. Les blew my mind 25 years ago, and still does today.
A good tip for a cut finger (no pun intended) is to pinch the wound closed and seal it with superglue. I've had to do this pre gig a couple of times.
Lol! It's funny but it might actually work
Medical superglue

Esto es una locura, una de mis canciones favoritas ♥️♥️♥️♥️

It's easy, oh only a couple chords, then you play it and the cramps set in
I'm so happy about this lesson, I love this song 🎵 💕 😍 ❤
You do a great job teaching.
Then the rest of it is awesome. The sounds he gets out of it. Great video

I could have swore you already taught me this. Can't practice this one enough though I suppose
I'm redoing a lot of the old videos that I'm unhappy with
I saw your earlier video back in April, I’ve been practicing since and finally just last month I would say I can play the whole song with no problem. It’s a hard song
I can't wait to be able to play this, I have a long way to go
He's the best bass player ever in my opinion
If not the best, one of the greatest for sure. He plays too good
I feel like hes the hendrix of bass, hes SO CREATIVE with what hes doing, not JUST incredibly skilled.

I would love to see how to play "Fish on" on a 4 string bass.
Thanks, Mark! Great lesson
Thanks G
Awesome work!
I might try working that into my style.
I have been trying to nail this one for years... and I just cant switch from finger to strum fast enough. Looks like I have to try again!
Same, it is especially hard with a 6 string. Try your thumb too. You might find it easier.

Can your cover the song my name is mud by primus
Could you do Toys Go Winding Down?
Something in my left thumb joint has died while attempting this :(
Anybody else thinks the 95bpm sounds cooler?

Please do my name is mud I can’t really figure it out

What bass do you use?
Enfield Lionheart
@@talkingbasslessons oh alright thanks
when playing this, my pinky and ring finger, along with my right hands nails. hurt very much....
Why can’t you use index, ring, and pinky for the chords? That’s how I naturally play chords on bass.
I want to be
A fiiiiishermaan!!!
Les Claypool's MOST PAINFUL Bass Riff is in Lacquer Head, no kidding, the left hand dead notes...
Already covered it on the channel, Lacquerhead is pretty straightforward. But difficulty is all relative. ruclips.net/video/seBIdZQHnhc/видео.html
way easier if you slap the notes in between strumming. just trust me.
Ethereum 🎸
Most painful? Idk check back in when you learn Jellikit, that song will kill your thumb
Definently not a beginner song lol
Actually, he not that amazing, for an alien.
Primus suck
This is beyond horrible
