How I fixed my Spider Clutch Bearing -

- How I fixed my Spider Clutch Bearing after it failed on my last ride out, you can see this in my video 'No Lancashire Hotpot Today'.
PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS NOT PERFORMED BY A PROFESSIONAL OR EVEN AN AMATEUR! I found out about this by using RUclips and Rocky Mountain Forums, I also used the incorrect grease, as I did not have any so decided on using the thinnest one I had at the time.
AMENDED ORDER: PLEASE DO THE WD-40 FIRST, THEN APPLY THE BRAKE CLEANER. I got this the wrong way round 🤦🏻♂️
I fully welcome any advice, I am still learning and this is my first time attempting something a bit more in depth as this service required.
Really enjoyed it :-)
Anyway, back on to the main topic I wanted to see if I could service and fix my spider clutch bearing, saving me time and money. Whilst improving my mechanical knowledge along the way. Progression is not just riding, but learning about your bike as well.
I cannot confirm if this works for you if your spider clutch is slipping, this was when mine would not dis engage the chain ring when pedalling backwards, resulting in the chain becoming snagged and in turn meaning I could not position my pedals when riding downhill.
So I put this walk through together of how I completed this, a step by step guide of how I did it.
Tools used in this video:
16 Notch Spline to BB tool www.amazon.co....
3mm & 8mm Allen Keys
Brake cleaner
WD 40 (Leave this to dry after application so as not to destroy the grease)
Grease (Should be PPL-2, I used the thinnest I had) www.amazon.co....
Chain tool
Loctite
End result it works a treat, I also learnt that I need to look after this more often, by the amount of grime and dirt in there. Not surprised though with the recent weather, and now know how to work on this.

Just a tip. Wd40 is a degreaser mate, start with that to remove the old grease then clean it out with the disc cleaner or isopropyl alcohol wait till it drys off then add the grease back in. The Wd40 will breakdown the grease you put in. 👍
Cheers mate, was going to take off and add more grease to the ball bearing side so can do it in right order now as well 👍🏼 see totally useless me at this haha
I need to catch up on your last few videos as well actually, just been face deep in editing and work 🤦🏻♂️
@@ElectricMountainBiker yeah I've not been out this might be the type of video I need to do lol. Maybe a drone one how too or something 😂.
But yeah Wd40 will turn that grease to water lol 👍
@@ElectricMountainBiker also I believe its a sprag clutch 😂 could be wrong with it being a usa beast.
@@Ruffest see one video and learnt two extra things. Did hear it was a sprag clutch afterwards though, so the ball bearing on the other side is that also part of the sprag clutch system?
@@ElectricMountainBiker yes mate you get them in motorbikes and ratchets with 0deg activation. They ride up to let it spin one way but turn it the other way and the bearings grip the shaft as they try to turn into it.
Cracking 'How-To' video mate. Loads of respect for anyone who learns how to do their own bike maintenance rather than rely on shops, etc.
Thanks mate, with the way how bike shops are rammed and parts now scarce it just makes sense. Saves on money and time off the bike if it works. Lesrnkgn about the bike in more detail really helped me and will in the future hopefully as now know another place I can look after myself now. Also now know how to swap it out when needed 🤦🏻♂️
Such a detailed step by step guide mate . Fair play . Love it 😍. Many people will have their bikes up and running in no time after this quick fix . Awesome
Thanks mate, hopefully it can help others sure they will have the correct way of doing it as well as my first time. Wanted it nice and simple to follow at least 🤙🏼
Watching vid a man doing bike DIY in his backyard gives me a soothing feeling, mate. Well done!
Haha very true, it does have a relaxing feel about it for sure 🤣
Relatively easy fix, you can't beat a good bit of lubrication👌. Great little 'how to' vid very clear and easy to follow👍
Cheers mate, yeh when broken down into smaller steps it made more sense to me then. First time trying a how to video and was really keen to not have it come across as I know it all, more a give it a try even if you have no idea. Worst case need to buy a new one if it does notnwork anyway so nothing to lose really 👍🏼
That's a really good how to / maintenance video, so detailed and easy to follow, also shows your editing skills, great chilled soundtrack as well, quality video mate, i'm sure this will help many out who are having the same issue 😃👍
Cheers mate, was really good fun putting it together and learning more about the bike along the way. Surprising just how much needs to be recorded to put in a small 5 min video really 🤣
Really good video! Thanks for sharing in "eBike Smile eMTB Community" fb group.
Thanks Jay, didn't realise this was held for review hence late reply 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for watching and always supporting me posting in the group ⚡👍🏼
For anyone watching this - he has cleaned it the wrong way around.
WD40 to loosen/remove the grease and brake cleaner afterwards to flush the degreaser and leave no residues (as it burns off at atmospheric temps). Adding in grease straight after WD-40 will just dissolve the grease you brushed in.
For anyone reading this Leno is very correct 😊 Also the pinned comment hopefully will pick it up 👍🏻
A good very easy to see video with the camera held just right .
Thank you, will also be using a less wobbly table if I do another one 👍🏼
Top bit of maintenance there Mate. 👍
Thanks mate, just figured time I started to learn more in depth servicing method, whilst hopefully pronouns the parts life 👍🏼
Wow brilliant video mate! Love your attention to detail when it comes to cleaning things properly... those bearings were well covered in dirt hence why they didn’t allow the chainring to spin as intended I guess lol 😜 Enjoyed watching even though I’ve got a completely different bike haha 😆👍
Cheers mate, really enjoyed putting this together made a real nice change from my normal edits. Yeh, so much dirt in there it was amazing. Really glad I learnt how to service it nown👍🏼👍🏼
@@ElectricMountainBiker one less worry and pain when you how to fix something yourself that’s for sure 👌 Always nice to mix things up a bit and shoot something different as you say 👍
I’ve put park tools HPG-1 waterproof grease on the back of the spider bearing and a ring around the front to try and prevent was ingress as I am on my 4th spider bearing now
Brilliant, I should be ok as mine was that HPG-1 as well, said it was good for water resistance so figured it should be ok. In hindsight I should and will go back and do but pack more grease in the ball bearing side.
Yeh, my second one now and refused to just keep spending money all the time so wanted to learn more about it.
At keast now, I can service it myself before it breaks again 👍🏼
Thank you for your comment and feedback as well much appreciated ⚡
This is great! Good production 👏🏽
Thank you 😊
Maybe you should have also informed your viewers that the sprag clutch small springs can come off easily and get lost. I almost lost a few while simply turning the clutch from one side to the other to clean it with spray. Just check inside the small holes if the springs are still there
I got really lucky this first time, however second time same as you with those little springs! 2 hours later find the little git.
Great DIY vid. Much appreciated!
No worries, glad you liked it 👍🏼
Great chilled video mate! 🤙
Cheers mate ⚡
After removing the seals I would recommend to bring the clutch to a car or bikeshop that got an ultrasonics washer and ask them to run the clutch in that a few times rotating it and flushing with brake cleaner in between. That will save you both some time and exposure from chemicals, and also make it perfectly free from rust without risking of losing any of the tiny springs inside.
To avoid clutch and and bearing problems in generell you should never ever flush a bike frame near bearings with anything near a solid beam of weather or pressure washer!!
Every single bearing I've replaced as a bike mechanic have shown signs of corrosion inside.
Great comment 👌 I have looked at those ultrasonic cleaners, think I will be purchasing one as perfect for the job 👍🏻
@@ElectricMountainBiker also perfect for cleaning bike chains. I run two chains wich increases the life of the cassette.
Tiny springs are available at any locksmith!
Noted for next time 👍🏻👍🏻 Cheers for the heads up 😊
Excellent video! Something I know Powerplay owners have issues with especially over winter. Now if you could do a video on how to stop seatstay lugs from departing the carbon that would be great 🤣 been through 4 already.
Thank you, was not to sure how it would be taken as a very different style of video for me.
Seatstay lugs, that is a new one to me, where abouts are these and what happens.
Will be looking at making more of these videos when I encounter an issue which I want to learn how to fix. Let me know more and will have a look at it 👍🏼👍🏼
I’ll send you an email tomorrow with some photos. I have a fair few examples in the workshop! Also fixed them all so I’ll explain how. Might be worth making a video as it’s pretty common
@@toddwatkins6162 cheers, yeh will have a look in to that, as seems to be something I need to look at as well.
@@toddwatkins6162 drop me a message on instagram and will send you my main email address, not sure which one is set up on RUclips 👍🏼
Would also like to give a mention that is if anyone else reading these comments this is the guy who also did my Unicorn motor covers with a carbon effect background! Stunning work, and they always get mentioned when I meet riders on the trails.
His company is @essentialwraps check them out, certainly know how to make your bike individual ⚡
Dude, awesome video, and I LOVE your unicorn sticker. Seriously, where can I get one???
Thanks it was a fun one to put together. Ingot them from essential wraps, sent over the design and my motor covers to them. They then hydrodipped I think it is called and sent back. Really nice and doesn't cost a fortune either 👍🏼
Use waterproof grease on the bearing you should share this video with pinned TV Jim has a rocky 🏔️ ebike
Nice one cheers, I used HPG-1 grease which shows as a high performance but water resistant, which one would you recommend so I can get some 👍🏼
Funny enough was chatting to Jim about this as his has gone as well, but his one is slipping so needs a new one unfortunately.
Great news though he has a Rocky Mountain, fantastic seeing a larger channel now being able to show what these bike are really like 👍🏼
Very detailed vid....but I thought I had it on mute for a mo......you normally aren’t short of a word or two lol .....only joking 😂. I know where to bring my bike when it breaks
🤣 I just think a good how to video shouldn't need words, was nice staying quiet for a change 🤣
Cheers mate though, was fun putting it together 👍🏼
🔥👍🏼
😀
Quick questions. I don't own one of these, but have a few questions for anyone who does.
1) With this setup from Rocky Mountain, is it possible to ride the bike without the motor? Say the motor fails during a trip and locks up. Can you simply re-route the chain and just use pedal power????
2) And my second question, when using zero assist (dead battery or just turned it off), is there any noticeable DRAG when pedaling? I have a Specialized E bike and there is considerable drag when trying to ride the bike without assist. So much so, that it's not usable without motor if your battery dies on the trail.
3) Same question as 2. In the case where you've re-routed the chain to bypass the motor altogether (if that's even possible), does the sprag clutch still create some drag when pedaling?
Thanks!
Hi Gerry, thanks for the questions, I will try and answer what I have experienced, another good place for answers is the Powerplay FB group as well, they have far better knowledge than I do 😊
Yes it is possible to still ride the bike when the battery runs out, I've experienced it twice now. The bike is still heavy so you certainly feel that resistance when there is no power in the bike. Akin to cycling through wet mud. Doable, just not enjoyable 🙈🤣 I would not want to spend a long time riding if the battery had run out.
However, there is an updated motor in the new bike the dyname 4.0, which does have an even better feel, but not tried with no battery on.
You can't re-route the chain to avoid the motor as it runs through the front chain ring, which is also where the clutch is located. Hopefully that helps a little, I would suggest getting some demo days in on various brands of ebikes and see what works best for you. I did that before buying mine, and really glad I did 👍🏻
@@ElectricMountainBikerOk thanks. I just thought at the video location 0:44 in, it looks like one could simply just lift the chain off the motor and lay it on the main chain ring. Granted, it would be too long then I suppose.
@@GerryR-o3p yeh currently on a 126 chain, so it really would be too long. Another option get the battery extender to really make sure it doesn't run out 👍🏻 I need to do that tbh 🤣
If i had one of those fangled e bikes that is an ace video on how to mend that thing. Genuinely great! Do you know how to fix broken shocks? 😁
Cheers mate, you know me always happy to try a different video format 🤣
Er nope, but I do want to know how to service them. Mate does it and says being careful it is not that hard to do. Probably impossible for me then 🤣
@@ElectricMountainBiker hmmm can't help but wonder, if it was so easy why are there so many specialist places dedicated to shock and fork services 🤔 unless it's a big con 😱
@@MTB_Derbyshire mainly because people are scared to try it themselves knowing how expensive a bit of kit the shocks are. That's the main reason for me, don't get me wrong I am also sure they do a much more professional service 👍🏼 never would you see a shock break in half first ride back after a professional service now would you.... 🤔😛
@@ElectricMountainBiker nah..... 🙄
😘
Oh yeah, and don't these bikes have a 3 year warranty? Isn't yours a 2019?
Yep 3 years on them, mine is the 2019. This part though does seem to need a lot of care to it, if it is to last.
Hello, thank you for the advice. I'll have a question, where did you find your carbon engine housings? Thanks
It is a wrap, original motor covers with a carbon effect wrap applied. Done by Essential Wraps in the UK 👍🏼👍🏼
Follow up question as I am about to do mine, why the "lightest grease"?
This is what Rocky Mountain recommend, but I never had any so I used HPG1.
Good thing about thicker grease in my eyes it doesn't fall straight through and in to the sprags, but I am also no professional mechanic either 🤣
Have you ever changed your chainring? How do you get the 4 screws to undo?
You need a chainring nut wrench tool, Park do them 👍🏻 I got stuck at the same part as you as well
You'll see on the back they have cut out slots, that is where the tool fits and let's you spin them 👍🏻
@@ElectricMountainBiker thank you. I've now found that tool and will order one up. In 25 years of bike maintenance I've never needed one before this.
Nice how to video.
How much grease did you put in there?
Not loads, when I read up on it if you pack it, it then stops the sprags from working and gets all clogged up as such. Advice I got was only a light layer. Will be going back though and packing out the ball bearing side a bit more though tbh.
@@ElectricMountainBiker awesome thanks
Last question. How did you get your crank arm off. I removed the bolt but cannot get the arm off
8mm Allan key mate 👍🏼
@@ElectricMountainBiker well that is what I did, and a large screw came out but not the arm. In front of the 8mm screw was a smaller 10mm peice that looked like it was being used as a lock nut. Very strange.
Mine has a straight in no messing simple Allan key job as per video. Strange why yours is different?
@@lforrest14 you are doing this on the same bike as mine aren't you? Silly question but wanted to ask just in case?
@@ElectricMountainBiker mine is the 2019 instinct power play. I figured the crank set up on the dynamo would be the same
Fantastic mate! Great little vid 👍 your whole chain and drive train is extremely clean as well. Good maintenance is key with these machines!
Cheers mate, yeh editing wise was a step outside comfort zone as don't want to make it look like I know everything 🤣
Yeh, maintenance is crucial on all ebikes as you well know. Kind of enjoy it now as well tbh haha 👍🏼
@@ElectricMountainBiker deffo, there’s something satisfying about working on your own bike 👍
Just noticed, you got yourself a new logo? Very nice mate⚡
