It took me like 4 seconds and go: “Holy crap! Is that Mary Spender??” I’m so glad to see you in the cycling community apart from the guitar community! Cheers, Mary!
That moment near the end of the video where Mary realizes how good her bike feels and gets a bit overwhelmed combined with the wide smile on James face showing the satisfaction he gets from helping people is a precious moment. I don't smile much these days but I had one then. Great video.
I really relate to this! I'm not a bike rider but I use a wheelchair, so I'm always very interested in getting as efficient as possible in the chair and after watching this I've phoned the rehab centre for an assessment to see if I need anything changed or improved. I just needed to push to call as it were..
Ok. My brain is adjusting! I was like, "wait, is that Mary? Where is her guitar and why is she talking about bike fits!" (That moment when your two worlds meet!) Mary does it all!
Crazy I've been following you guitar page for about 5-6 years and as a cyclist never even got wind of your bike passion Mary. Great to see we share two amazing lifestyles!
Mary's huge smile at the end just made my day. I love seeing someone so passionate about what they do and I LOVE seeing so much joy! This is why we bike👍
Very cool to see you visiting with James. The first ~80% of the video was informative & fun in a familiar BFJ way. But everything from 13:00 to the end was just heartwarming. 👍 Looking great, Mary!
It’s so wonderful to witness you so happy with the adjustments made to your bike and cleats etc. I totally understand the emotional impact of no longer having to worry about the problems and pains of your old setup. It’s like rediscovering the joys of playing the guitar after getting one’s guitar back from a professional setup… and now you know how I found this channel! Mary, you’re just so honest and genuine, such an absolute pleasure to watch. Thankyou for these wonderful glimpses of your life and who you are as a person.
Wait, what? You have a cycling channel, too? My two favorite things in the world - cycling and guitars! One of the few regrets in my life is that I didn't start playing guitar the same time I started cycling. I'd be a half-decent player if I had!
Omg Mary. I follow your music content, the gear reviews and I especially love those contributions to Paul Davids Challenges. You are all so lovely people. And now I watched a bunch of GNBM and GNC clips to end up here. Rubbing my eyes because this lady looked and sounded (!) somehow familiar but definitely from another context. Don’t know why, but this makes me so happy right now. I’m a non-pro bass player and lean more towards MTB, so kind of symmetrical to your guitar-road cycle-thing, if that makes any sense. I wish you all the happiness and relief through your adjusted bike.
That was an absolute joy to watch. Thank you for reminding us how to show up at a bike fitting: completely open and ego-free. I'm inspired to go get re-fit (it's been 10 years, and the tech has changed a LOT).
One word; astonishing! Following a knee injury in my early teens, I have never felt "right" when on a bicycle. Constant pain in both knees (I suspect one is compensating for the other) and at the end of a ride I had aches and pains in all sorts of places. I got to point where I just gave up, and haven't ridden a bicycle in years. Having seen this, I might get back in the saddle and go and speak to someone who knows what they're doing; I really miss cycling.
Same issue...get a better seat ...like a big ass one..and adjust it higher...your putting to much torque on the low end ..it belongs on the high to mid part of the oedal
Aside from doing this, you should see a Physical Therapist who knows what they're doing in terms of sports and athletics. I also had a knee injury that stopped me from cycling for many years. Visiting multiple PT visits was of no avail. It was when a friend (who is a semi-pro cyclist), recommended a PT that her team is associated with, that I got the proper help. Helped work on hip mobility and strengthening the hip and ankles which alleviated much of my knee pain. That and getting a better fit helped tremendously.
Get a fit!!! Most bicycle shops have an option to get a professional fit. They are a life-changer. Even if it isn’t as in-depth as this, simple measurements can be amazing! I was having horrible knee pain, so bad I thought I tore something, but it turned out my bike was just improperly fit. 30 minutes later, I was almost pain free. Still had to do a bit of tweaking, but it was such a vast improvement I couldn’t believe it.
Never ever will anybody believe me how touching and wonderful a video about bike-fitting can be...really wonderful and informative as well, made me smile
Fun to see the crossover between my hobby stuff (guitar) and my work stuff (cycling)! I’ve been working in the cycling industry for about 25 years now, started when I was 15 in my local bike shop and now work for an industry leading bike brand. It’s sure been a fun ride so far, love the cycling industry, it’s truly full of great people who just want to help others enjoy the sport. Getting fit is so important too, I’m sure you’ll benefit from this for years to come!
Tremendous. This was so inspiring to me. I have had bike fits done over many years and experienced the 'aha' moments and the 'click' into place moments when the fit is right. One thing to consider.. as I've aged, I have changed.. and therefore so has my fit. I am a bit old, tired, and inflexible now compared to my 20-30 yr old self. Every new decade gets harder. All that said.. my point: Get a fit at least every 5 years. :) It's nice to have a 2nd opinion. Oh, and get a fit from someone that analyzes you like James... or uses Steve Hogg methods.. Basically, it's important they are really optimizing YOUR hips, knees, neck, etc. and not just fitting you to some target. That was the old style... but it's still prevalent in the local bike shops near me.
I love that this video has just come up in my feed. I'm a follower of your music and love that we both have music and cycling among our passions. I too have recently undergone a bike fit approximately 3 weeks ago and it has definitely made a significant improvement in my efficiency. Love your videos. Thank you Mary.
Incredible transition! So happy you got the right fit. I need to travel to London to see him, make it my vacay from Canada to the UK just for a good bike fit!!
I follow you Mary, James and Francis. I love guitar and cycling. This was a real treat to watch. I liked how you got emotional, it just shows how much you love cycling. I had a smile on my face and got lost in this video, thank you
Whether or not you get, faster or an increase in power the most important factor to come out of a bike fit is comfort. The more comfortable you are more you will likely want to ride more . I do ride and have had several bike fits, including recently as I have had to change the saddle, due to pain and pressure sore. I currently ride a 2016 Trek Domane, with Ultegra group set, and for pedals I use speed play pedals ( dual sided entry) .
Thank you for sharing. I've learned so much from James by watching Francis' videos and I feel he's helped me tremendously, I could imagine an inperson fit to be 100 times better!
That was a great demonstration of 'Salesmanship'. The key technique is find out what your customer wants and help them find the best way to get it; this is all there is to it and nothing more. I hope the fella has a steady flow of customers needing that little bit of help.
youtube recommended the video and I'm glad. you can definitely see in the final side-by-side. the new position is much more relaxed. a good bike shop should always give customers a free bike fit when you buy a new bike. The last two bikes I bought from my local bike shop gave me a fitting and it makes a huge difference. I can crankout a double metric with zero pain, compared to the first bike I bought and didn't get a bike fit.
Hey it's that guy from that cycling channel and that girl from that music channel! Two of my favorite things in one channel and video. Although I keep putting off a proper bike fit because the way my bike's set up feel good to me and I'm afraid that I'll find out that everything's off and needs to be replaced and not just adjusted and I just can't afford that right now. 45 years of cycling and no cycling-related injuries so I think I'd doing ok.
I love this guys passion, amazing! Im so buzzed for you to get your exercise journey onto the next chapter, a more comfortable one haha. This has inspired me to get myself checked out properly at a running store and get the right shoes for me 👍🏻
WTF? My mind just wobbled a little bit. My guitar and cycling addictions collided right here. I'm so glad this popped up in my feed. I habitually watch you and Rick Beato AND GCN on Friday nights. Recently got a Lauf gravel bike and was watching bike fit videos. And then this popped up. You look great on the bike! I could hang with you on a ride probably, but not definitely not in a jam. Enjoy that refound passion!
Fitting your bike is the best thing you can do riding more satisfied and happier because your bike feels right. Nice guy and what a passion he had for this what he's doeing. Great job! 🙂
I can attest to the quality of Orbea frames (at least the old school ones). I have a 2006 Orbea Orca that is still brilliant and is 2KG-3KG lighter than today's bikes.
If work calls me over to the UK (which is possible post covid) i am goin to bring all my controls, my lakes, and my Bike geo information to James at Bicycle. Happy pedaling. -U10
It is so fascinating that people who really know their stuff like James and, e.g. Hambini, just KNOW that what they are doing is right. Its so easily visible in their behaviour, their body language, their attitude! That is so cool to see!!!
As a follower of both Andertons and GCN, I was wondering if I was seeing things with Mary in the thumbnail! Pastime crossover on RUclips always blows my mind.
After 30 years of riding I can say for certain that comfort (bike fit) is the most important thing. Don't settle for anything less than a bike you can ride all day in total comfort.
It is sumply amazing...I have been suffering from l hip/low back/buttock pain on the left side for 2 years now, went through few physio, doing compensation excersises, stretching etc, but nothing has helped so far...I think it is because of wrong, unhealthy position on my bike that has caused all these issues...I would love to have this guy helping me with the bike fit, he is great...unfortunately I am based in Czech...good luck and wish many miles on your bike
@@jirinekuza8995 There are books and videos that are clear and helpful. One problem is affording modifications such as stem, cranks, saddle, shoes. Far too expensive to buy to try. That's where a pro shop with adjustable static frame & video helps. After smashing my right foot, I can't quite get my fit right and do need a pro fit but can't justify cost as retiree. Probably always needed wedges on pedals to cater for bowed legs below knees. Now I'm old and creaky, I need a less aggressive position. But my bikes are just about right and I've helped scores of people feel better on their bikes
Wow! I, literally, just stumbled on this video and your channel. And this must be THE most exciting and interesting videos about biking - ever. Pose on bike has so much to do with the enjoyment of the ride.
How am I just finding this channel now? Brilliant guitarist singer/songwriter AND fellow cyclist? Instant subscription. So glad you got your bike fitting you properly, Mary!
Mary Spender, you are awesome. I have enjoyed your guitar videos for quite some time. Today I was researching how to improve my cycling and who should appear, YOU! I look forward to enjoying even MORE of your content! :-)
I was scrolling down YT feed and suddenly I thought "wow she looks like Mary Spendor, but she doesn't ride?". Great story MS and glad that you got your fit sorted. Nothing worse than uncomfortable riding. Keep up the good work with the music and cycling!
Bike fit James looks like he really enjoys the fitting process and improving biking comfort and performance! I can see parallels with performance ski boot and ski fitting. Little adjusts and correct adjustments make all the difference.
I don't know if your expression shows more joy while on the bike, or playing your guitar and singing... you are a fun person... thanks for sharing this
How cool is this? Twenty minutes ago I watched your video on the Lava guitar unboxing ... Flipped down in my feed a bit and find you again, here! Both of my most passionate interests in one RUclips host! How could I have missed you up till now? I look forward to seeing more!
So glad to see you smile when you get a good fit, just like finding a guitar with great sound and action. Now I have 2 Mary Spender channels to watch....
The funny thing is, he didn't had to change much on the bike. Basically, you can remember... Move the stem further up, cleats as far back as possible, reduce saddle height by 1 - 2 cm, put a narrower handlebar (with possibly less reach) on the bike and maybe choose a narrower saddle.
Wow... So happy to have found this video. It changed my way how Iook at new parts or how I will build up my long distance travel rig. Thank you so much!
This reminds me the videos of deaf kids getting a hearing aid device and hearing for the 1st time, the smile of recognition that your life are going to be much better from now on is priceless. And this is the best job in the world, you know that the person who came in, will get out much happier, what else could you ask for in life?
I had that groupset (Sora)! Rode it proudly with all the other dudes. Only changed up when my frame cracked and had to find another bike. Having said that, I'm pretty happy with Ultegra. At 5:18 he talks about cleat location. It's worth taking notice, because these problems can just keep accumulating over the years.
Thank You!! Because of your video I interviewed 3 “specialist” that did bike fits and selected one 90 minutes from my house to do both of my bikes. When my wife noticed how energized I was after a 20 mile (32km) ride she asked me to take her and her bike in for a fit. A good or great quality bike is junk without a fitting! I never dread getting on my bike and when I can’t ride I feel my body crave it. Being tired is good, sore or in pain is not.
Bikes & guitar music - I love it when my channels cross. Resolution of knee and numb finger issues aside, the biggest revelation after my formal bike fit was realizing how much energy I had spent fighting the bike. Hope you enjoy your rides even more in 2022.
Brilliant! I wonder if there is someplace near me where I could have the same analytics preformed for a mere, 62 year old mortal like myself. I do live in Colorado Springs which is of course home to US Olympic Training Center so.......?
By far not experienced enough in cycling, but I recognize that smile from the skiing world. A proper boot fitting session makes a TON of difference! :)
This was such a wholesome vid. Glad you are happy with the changes! You've also rekindled my love for the bike, gotta get one, so gotta save up. Take care!
Hi Mary, I've been riding more seriously since 2019, in 2020 i decided to try guitar again. so today i'm watching Rick Beato and your singing along on some two chord songs. One of which i've seen you do with Pete at Andertons (crazy awesome covers). So I didn't know you were in the states and went looking for your channel and found this video, I've seen the tatoo and a bike on the wall of your music room/studio but didn't put it together really. Anyway enjoy the ride, keep singing/playing.
This is the best bike fit video that I have ever seen. Awesome. The look on your face when you realised there was no pain and were most likely thinking that I could ride for hours now 😁
I made adjustments to my road bike over a 3 yr period after listening to James on Francis Cade's YT channel when he did Bike Fit Tuesdays (never filmed on a Tuesday lol). James is probably one of the most knowledgeable bike fitters because he's not loyal to a brand, only what works. He looks at a problem from every aspect. I would love to get a fit in person, but England is a bit too far away, but the adjustments I have made due to the information James puts out, have made my bike a better fit overall.
This is amazing insite for anyone that likes riding a bike. Great video, I learned alot about how the bike should fit each individual. I can tell by her smile it was night and day.
Wow! James makes it look so easy. And the look on your face at the end... Priceless! If only we could clone James and airlift him to Nairobi Kenya, my knees and legs would be forever grateful.
Great video, I really got into the Bike when I was fed up with running injures. I paid big bucks for a fit but still had hand, and an unmentionable part of my body going numb. Hips also were hurting also. If I could afford this fit I would still be riding.kudos to you Mary for having other thing you are passionate about besides the guitar.
The problem: does the fitter fit bike for you or try to fit you to a formula. There are two distinct shapes for road racing bikes: weight forward, high saddle, toes down; or weight back, lower saddle, heels down. From there, the fine adjustments flow. Aggressive riding position appears standard for bikes now - sold with high saddle, low bars like time trialling crit racers. But we're not all break away TdF pros. Some of us are old and less flexible than in youth. Look at photos of Eddie, Anquetil, etc. Saddles were far closer to top tube even allowing for horizontal and sloping frames. Bar tops were much higher in relation to saddle but the drops were greater - we used the Cinelli deep drops, sometimes for hours. High saddle, low bars is much less safe in traffic. Pros are racing on closed roads with other pros - and still crash due to not looking ahead. I see riders near me with extreme positions that are unsafe: weight over bars affects steering and what they can see - so they go surprisingly slowly and wobbly in town. If I can save up, I will try to get a fit from this guy
I was looking for a bike fit vid and who shows up in it but Mary Spender who I know from your music channel but I had no idea you have a fitness channel too. Hello from Sacramento, CA, where we cycle in the sun year-round, except for this last winter when monsoons nearly washed us away. 😆
I can definitely relate to this experience. Been a mountain biker for 9 years and road cyclist for more than 4 years, the last 2.5 yrs was just pure agony and confusion as to what I want to get comfy on my bike. Road cycling is way different and you need to be really bang-on the fit so you can smile for miles. Finally had a proper bike fit just 2 weeks ago and had the courage to ride for 200kms with no pain, just felt tired but wok up next day still able to walk haha
Agreed that saddle was too high. But by shortening the reach so much if you were riding at your FTP or higher in the drops for a long time like in a race you would get some serious pain in the centre of your back.
This video reminds of me when I got my first bike fitting in 2015 as it changed everything about my riding comfort. I was reliving those memories all over again when I saw how delighted you were when you noticed the improvements.
This is awesome! I started following you because Adam Neelyʻs channel brought me here. Now I find your a cyclist too! Bike Fit James and Francis Cade are people Iʻve Been following for years.

Yeah definitely a faith in humanity somewhat restored moment.
Yeah, she needs to lose weight.
Looks at those fat-filled knees, incredible.
James is a PROFESSIONAL first and last; illustrated by the fact that he saved this lady about £3,000 plus...

Awesome. Both of them seem like really genuine people as well. James is clearly a pro fitter and knows exactly what he's talking about.
How am I just finding this channel now? Brilliant guitarist singer/songwriter AND fellow cyclist? Instant subscription. So glad you got your bike fitting you properly, Mary!
Love the joy expressed by both with the great result! big fan of James in the Cade vids, Mary’s energy is infectious!
Great video. Booked to see James in February. This really helped give me a clue of what to expect beyond what I’d seen in Francis’ videos
Now that was pretty cool Miss Mary, Thank You for taking us on the ride with you.. Much Love & be Safe out there on the road ...!
Awesome, I started cycling in 2019 and when I bought my Canyon Endurace I was in pain for months…until I got my professional fit…changed my life!!
Mary Spender, you are awesome. I have enjoyed your guitar videos for quite some time. Today I was researching how to improve my cycling and who should appear, YOU! I look forward to enjoying even MORE of your content! :-)
James is 100% on this. I changed my position (bike and cleats) to his basic principles and I've got to tell you...it works!
Thank you for sharing this!
I was scrolling down YT feed and suddenly I thought "wow she looks like Mary Spendor, but she doesn't ride?". Great story MS and glad that you got your fit sorted. Nothing worse than uncomfortable riding. Keep up the good work with the music and cycling!
Yeah, she does look like Mary Spender. Uncanny resemblance.
Was looking at road bike setup videos since im starting to bike again. Didn't realize you're the same person with the guitar videos. Talented!
Wow! I wish I could come see you! Tired of the pain! You’re a fit wizard!
Bike fit James looks like he really enjoys the fitting process and improving biking comfort and performance! I can see parallels with performance ski boot and ski fitting. Little adjusts and correct adjustments make all the difference.
I don't know if your expression shows more joy while on the bike, or playing your guitar and singing... you are a fun person... thanks for sharing this
It's a great feeling that you and your bike are connected as one team.
Fantastic job done by James again. You got a bigger smile during the video. Lots of suc6 with your “ new” bike.
This reminds me the videos of deaf kids getting a hearing aid device and hearing for the 1st time, the smile of recognition that your life are going to be much better from now on is priceless.
And this is the best job in the world, you know that the person who came in, will get out much happier, what else could you ask for in life?
Wow Mary's smile says it all, the bike fits 👍
The best @bikefitjames video yet! Thanks for filming your new bike fit!
Mary Spender from Frog Leap song Sultans of Swing Sooo great knowing you are a cyclist too
I had that groupset (Sora)!
Good on you. Great video and thanks for sharing the journey. So glad it worked out.
Thanks very much! As a novice cyclist, this introduced me to many important concepts to pay attention to. Much appreciated!.
Smiling at your face as the video went on. So nice to see the bike fit King do his magic.
Awesome!! Huge fan of your music and just listening to your stories and your guitar store visits, and now this!! Subscribed 😃
Love this video, I've watched it 3 times now. I'm going my first bike fit next month & really hoping my experience is a great as yours.
The one and only Mary Spender. A talented musician ... and a cyclist too!
(And an ace bike shop. Impressive expertise)
I loved that Mary , I also see that happiness when I bike fit someone that has been sitting wrong for so long ! Happy riding A.
Nice! I didn't know this service exists. And it even does exist in my home town. That's really cool. Thanks for making this video!
This is the best bike fit video that I have ever seen. Awesome. The look on your face when you realised there was no pain and were most likely thinking that I could ride for hours now 😁
Nice Vid. I have also been to see Bike Fit James and now have a new Bike and Shoes. Happy riding
Same for me, John.
This is amazing insite for anyone that likes riding a bike. Great video, I learned alot about how the bike should fit each individual. I can tell by her smile it was night and day.
I love Mary, been listening to her songs for so long now. Had no idea she was into cycling too! This is amazing
Not a biker but a runner … and the difference made from working on your gear and posture is absolutely life changing. Love this video!
I didnt' even know about this other channel, usually see you Mary on your guitar channel. Loved this one about proper cycle fitting.
I'm glad James mentioned saddle width, as agree, saddles are quite-often too wide.
It’s always a pleasure to see people enjoying riding their bike, it’s my healthy addiction. May the road rise to meet you.
I was looking for a bike fit vid and who shows up in it but Mary Spender who I know from your music channel but I had no idea you have a fitness channel too. Hello from Sacramento, CA, where we cycle in the sun year-round, except for this last winter when monsoons nearly washed us away. 😆
Her experience closely mirrors my own, excellent bike fit journey. Worth every single penny.
I've actually binned a bike fitting appointment I had for 15th of this month in order to save up for a bike and shoe fitting with this guy. Nuff said.
