  • My first time watching Jaws and I didnt expect it to make me sad. Quint definitely deserved better than to be taken out by a shark! Other than that, I had a lot of fun with this one.

@@ambybambibooI mean have you looked around our country? But realistically the mayor's opinion is wrong but really not all that wrong. Yes they should have been more cautious yes they shouldn't have assumed that it was a boat propeller but in most cases when a great white attacks in real life you close the beaches for like a day. By the time that day is up the shark is long gone because they migrate up the coast. And that type of negative publicity could literally cause the people of his Island to starve during the winter time. He was in a very tough spot because is there this monstrous animal that's coming to eat everybody or is it something that happens somewhat regularly? Do we raise the red flag and put an entire Island on welfare many of which who will never recover? There isn't a good decision here. Because if you do the right thing everyone on the island is going to be mad at you if you do the wrong thing and it works out then your hero if you do the wrong thing and it doesn't work out you are evil. The mayor made some mistakes but he's not some evil guy. And in the second movie he really learns a lot. I'm not going to spoil much but as soon as there's a thought of a second shark the mayor bends over backwards to help the chief and I think in the second movie he's much much much more justified in not believing. But I think there's a lot of growth in the mayor character.

Yes, the speech delivered by Quint about the USS Indianapolis tragedy is a true story, an actual historical fact. It really happened! His story relating the incident is one of the most epic monologues in cinematic history, and is the key to his character and his obsession with killing sharks. He smashed the radio not only because he was determined to personally secure the bounty and reward for killing the shark, which is strictly a secondary consideration for him, but rather because he wanted revenge (or perhaps redemption) for his horrific experience, which he can only achieve by destroying the man-eating shark himself…

Also the reason the mayor was so adamant about not closing beaches is he was into the mob for $$. Also the way Quint and the shark met their demise was different... Filmed in Martha's Vineyard a lot of towns people were in the movie as extras as well as key roles like the Medical Inspector was the actual medical inspector...

I'm always struck by how multi-talented Robert Shaw was. He started as a stage actor and did extraordinary Shakespearean performances. Shifting to the screen, he was incredible as King Henry VIII in the film version of “A Man for All Seasons". Today he’s most widely known for his charismatic portrayal of Quint here. (Incidentally, about his charisma: see The Sting". He stars alongside Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Those are two of the most charismatic actors ever -- but onscreen it's Shaw who commands our attention.)
This is already an impressive résumé. But what really astounds me is that acting wasn't his main thing. He was primarily a novelist and playwright, and a very serious one, too. One of his plays, "The Man in the Glass Booth" -- based on his own novel of the same name -- was a hit in 1968 both in London and on Broadway. Its unusual plot deals with "a Jewish businessman pretending to be a Nazi war criminal, or a Nazi war criminal pretending to be a Jewish businessman." (That's Wikipedia's description, and it's pretty accurate.) The play became a film, and it's very impressive work. A subtle, incisive look at questions of identity in the wake of massive trauma. Admirably, Shaw doesn't take the easy way out. He doesn't oversimplify. Instead, he digs deep into layer upon layer of moral issues that have no clear answer.
Remarkable man. I can’t think of anyone else with such a breadth and depth of talent, charisma, and intelligence. He died aged 51. Way, way, way too young.

Jaws was the first movie to feature a super large shark in movies and t,v. shows like Sea Hunt and flipper or James Bond Thunderball sharks were these dolphin sized fish. Many people had no idea that Great Whites could grow to 17 feet long and sometimes 20 feet. Whale Sharks were bigger and known but were also not man eaters. My dad co owned a fishing boat out of Oceanside Ca. and following the movie people paid me to take them out to try and see a large Great White. On a number of occasions I found them a 17 foot female that was around San Clemente island They were impressed enough by her and were blown away by the thought of a 25 foot long one like in the movie.

    • @thickerconstrictor9037
      @thickerconstrictor9037 Год назад

And now almost fifty years later people are still fucking obsessed with finding a 25 foot great white. It's sad they ignore the beauty and wonder of an 18 ft great white because they have to see one as big as the one in Jaws. But I'd be willing to bet that it'll never happen. We've never even measured a 20-foot great white reliably. There have been claims of 20-23 ft great whites but a lot of them like the Cuban great white were actually only about 17 ft. Deep blue is supposed to be about 20 ft but no one has measured her a lot of scientists think she's probably more like 18 or 19 ft. And instead of people just being in awe of how Mammoth that is they just want to see a 20-plus ft great white.

If you're interested in another movie about killer animals that's based on a true story you should definitely react to "The Ghost and the Darkness" (1996). They don't ever sleep.
    Not really.
In order to breathe, they must move. If they hold still, they suffocate.
They do have rest periods where they still move and their eyes still watch things and track anything moving nearby.
So parts of their brain are awake but other parts are napping.
But if it has the smell of many gallons of blood in the water, a hook in its mouth, and barrels attached to it, it won't nap, either.

    3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. Works every time.🤣🤣
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along, so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. The boy that said, "He made me do it' is now the Police Chief of the town where this movie was filmed.
    7. Hooper was wrong. The fish that hit the line was "our fish".

    9. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.

If they want the beaches open, he'll keep them open. We get the leadership we deserve. People dont often act in their own best interest: cigarettes, drinking, ice cream, attending school but not studying, driving too fast, not flossing. Time and again, we're told these things arent good for us, but does anyone listen?

Hooper is almost certainly safe here.
The shark that attacked this boat did it's thing then swam away.
Also, they feed at night because they like to hunt in the dark, by smell.
Daylight works against them by helping their prey spot them.
Hooper turned on lots of lights to keep the shark away.
He's moving without splashing, thrashing, or bleeding so he won't get the shark's attention if for some reason it, or a different shark, is nearby.
He's an expert who knows what he's doing.
Doesn't mean he can't be attacked, but it's extremely unlikely.

I came to the comment section to read everyone's incorrect "fun facts"
There's a number of myths associated with this film.
First off this movie in no way was inspired by the Jersey shore shark attacks of 1916. Peter benchley and his widow have stated in interviews which are available online for those to read where you hear it directly from their mouths that the inspiration for Jaws came from a story that Benchley saw with Frank mundus and a 4,500 lb great white that he caught and it got him thinking what would it be like if a rogue great white started terrorizing and Island community. And that is what inspired him.
People will say that the line you're gonna need a bigger boat was improvised. Carl gottlieb who played the man who worked for the newspaper was the man who wrote the screenplay for the movie along with benchley. Available on RUclips is an interview with Carl and Peter benchley from jawsfest 2005 where Carl states that for years he would tell people that that line was improvised but Roy Scheider himself who played Chief Brody stated that while he did improvise on the film a few times the bigger boat line was in fact in the script. He did addit more times than was written however which you see in the film at least another two times. And the cast and crew would add it in random scenes throughout the film as a joke. But it was in the script.
The Indianapolis speech is amazing and while the Indianapolis story is mostly true, the amount of people actually killed by sharks is exaggerated a lot. Most of the people who died were killed either by the torpedoes or by the elements, dehydration etc in the days following the sinking. Sharks mostly scavenged people. I'm not saying that absolutely no living person was killed by a shark but the vast majority were already dead or gravely injured when they were attacked by the sharks. there were so many people in the water that there were actually entire groups of survivors that did not see a single shark the entire time.
And finally the shooting star that you see is not real. Joe Alves wrote in his book that it was added digitally after the fact. Not only that but the scene where you see the shooting star is actually during the daytime. What they did in this movie numerous times was filmed during the day and use a filter on the camera to make it look like night-time. The attack at the very beginning of the movie, The Holiday roast seen, the attack after dinner on the boat, are all shot during the day with use of a filter. And you can really tell if you look that it looks really bright. Not to mention shooting stars are a calling card of Spielberg. He's used them in numerous films.
But I definitely encourage people to check out the Jaws fest interview there's a lot correcting these myths on there. Especially the bigger boat scene that should be in the first 5 or 10 minutes of the interview. But thanks for posting! I love living vicariously through people I've been watching Jaws since I was five years old and it's been almost thirty years now. It's still my second favorite film of all time only behind Jurassic park.

Thanks!! I'm originally from Neptune NJ (but Seattle is home now) and I'm so tired of seeing people reposting the Jersey shark story. Although there *is* a "Shark River" in Neptune, there has never been a shark seen in it,as it is brackish water, inhospitable to sharks. The name came from "shirk river" because of people wandering away from work on the area farms. You're welcome.

This was the first movie I saw in a theater when I was a kid. Sharks weren't really known at the time. This movie (and book) made sharks feared. Even the writer of the book said it wish he didn't make sharks so scary (since folks were hunting them). You talked about the friendship between Brody and Hooper. In the book, Hooper sleeps with Brody's wife (you kinda seem them flirting here and there in the movie). So when the shark is about to attack Hooper, Brody doesn't save him, knowing he slept with his wife and lets the shark kill him. After reading the book, I have to say this is one of the few times the movie was better than the book.

4:10 "There wouldn't be a panic if people stayed out of the water."
Lemme ask you: It's a major summer holiday, you have time off from work, and you decide to go to the beach. Are you happy with just making sandcastles all day or would you like to go into the water and swim?
Ask that question of 10 people who actually love going to beaches and actually do go to beaches in the summer, and at least 9 of them will say they want to go into the water or want their kids to have fun in the water.
So saying there would be no panic of people stayed out of the water is true, because almost all of them would get in their cars and go somewhere else.
    Would that be so bad?
Amity is far north. The ocean is really cold a lot of the year, but great during summer.
The town is full of shops: food, souvenirs, convenience stores, and hotels for tourists.
But if they all drive down the road to another beach, all those businesses make no money.
But it's only for a few days!
These few days, the 4th of July weekend, is when most of those businesses make 10-25% of their entire yearly income.
Would you be happy to go to work tomorrow and ask your boss to REDUCE your salary by 25%? Not likely.
For many of those businesses, losing that much money could bankrupt them.
For many of those people who own or work in businesses that go bankrupt, they can't afford their rents and mortgages.
This isn't exaggerating. Small beach towns like this one really need that money or people lose their businesses, jobs, and homes.
OK, but closing the beaches will save lives.
    No. Not really.
Because sharks never feed in the same place twice. Not in real life.
Mayors in real life beach towns like this usually don't close the beaches and there is NEVER a second attack - whenever somebody else gets bit at the same beach, it's always a different shark - bad luck to have two different sharks but having one or two sharks swim up and bite people is just a risk of playing in the ocean. a very, very small risk.
Occasionally a mayor closes a beach after a shark attack but usually out of season, like in May or September, and it's usually for political reasons to show how much he cares without risking catastrophic financial loss.
Or, if the attack just happened, minutes ago, they might close the beach for the rest of the day to make sure the shark moves along - no need to offer it immediate dessert while it's still in the area.
By the time they found Chrissie's body, that shark is 20 miles away and it's somebody else's problem.
This mayor should know this fact, but Chief Brody might not since he's new here.
So, closing the beaches ruins lives and does not save any lives at all.
The mayor is right, he should leave the beaches open.
The only problem here is that this is not a shark movie.
    It's a monster movie.
The shark is gigantic, bigger than any toothed shark that has been alive for the entire length of human history.
Also, this shark is hunting humans right here like some kind of psychopath hunting coeds at a summer camp. Sharks don't do this.
Because this is a monster movie, more people die and Mayor Vaughn looks like a greedy evil bastard that let them die.
    He's not.
It's just that nobody told HIM that he is in a monster movie.
You really dislike this mayor. You repeatedly call him names throughout the movie.
    For reasons like
    1. Protecting the town
    2. Not wanting to cut open the tiger shark and see Alex Kintner's young body fall out in front of hundreds of people.
    3. Protecting the town again.
    I get it.
The movie doesn't tell you the reality of sharks.
The movie makes the mayor look like the villain when he's only doing exactly what a good mayor should do.
You are reacting exactly the way Steven Spielberg wanted you to.
I just thought you might want to get a more true-to-life perspective.

First, Mr. Mayor, what difference does it make to _you?_ If people don't want to go into the water, what gives you the right to _complain?_
Second, Sheriff Brody is saying it's not _safe._ Dr. _Hooper_ is saying it's not safe. The mariner, _Quint_ is saying it's not safe. The only guy saying it _is_ safe came to the beach in a suit and _tie_ instead of a _bathing_ suit, as if _he's_ not prepared to go in.
So the _proper_ question, Mayor Vaughn, is how come _you're_ not in the water? How come the _one_ guy insisting that the water is safe is not _demonstrating_ it by going in _himself?_

20:20 "He's just taking pictures like this thing ain't thinking about capsizing this boat."
    It ain't.
Sharks don't know what boats are, they don't know what capsizing is, they don't know how to do it or why to do it or even that the iea exists.
That shark smells gallons of blood in the water (because these humans dumped it there) and the shark is simply looking for the meal.
A real shark would never do anything you see in this movie, like repeatedly ramming its face into the boat.
This is not a shark movie.
    It's a monster movie.
Considering that, maybe you are right after all: this monster might be thinking about capsizing, or at least sinking, this boat so it can snack on three tasty humans.
But Hooper, taking the picture, doesn't know it's a monster movie so he would never even imagine that a shark would do anything like attacking a boat this big.

"Good god, I forget how big they can actually get sometime."
    They can't get THAT big.
They can't even get as big as the monster shark in this movie.
20' is about the biggest toothed shark any human has ever seen in all of human history.
The only sharks in the ocean for the last few million years bigger than about 20' or so, don't have teeth.
That jawbone in the picture is from a Megalodon, a shark that could have been as much as 80' long from nose to tail, give or take a bit.
Lucky for us, megalodons have ben extinct for about 3.5 million years.
