So cute, I don't always take my rats outside but when I do they ride in my hoodie. Where'd you get your female? Around here all I can find are male rats unless you go to someone who breeds feeders. But feeder rats aren't usually the greatest genetics. We have a female dwarf dumbo, that we got from someone who was breeding for their snake. My male rat who is huge makes the little one look like a lil mouse lol.
I actually found my girl Nonnie at Petsmart. All the Petsmarts either carry all male animals or all female animals (what I'm told anyway). Anyway, I went in for rat food and there she was, all alone. Apparently her sister was "in the back with a respiratory infection" so I snatched her up. The girl who worked there had rats and ferrets of her own and she said she spent time with her whenever she could. After her initial adjustment, she's been friendly and fearless! The girl who took care of her at the store even still follows us on Instagram. I had two other girls from Petsmart too. One died of a pituitary tumor and the other a mammary tumor...both before they were two years old. Have you tried www.afrma.org/breederlist.htm#other ? I found a breeder with excellent reviews just a couple of hours from me. I fully plan on making the trip when I am ready to adopt again in the future. I'm looking for a healthier line of rats - if any such thing exists.
Oh! And I have a boy dumbo who I adopted from CL and he is adorable!! I love the bigger rats. They are more cat like and less "squeeze into every microscopic crevice" like :)
+Tiny Tails Hammocks I'll have to look at that website when Im looking for a new rat. my big boy is named john he was the first rat I have had the privilege to befriend. he eats my dinner with me and he has grown larger than I thought he would, not counting his tail he is as long as my forearm and he is a fancy rat, I have a younger male dumbo who is named Frank. both of my rats were alone when I got them and they looked so sad and cute I had to get them. Im sorry for your loss, along with their wonderful personality they do have their health risks. about a month ago I had to put down one of my rats because of a tumor on his shoulder blade, and a tumor growing behind his eye. the tumor was pushing his eye out of his head :( he was so bad off he couldn't even walk to his water bottle, but the rats I have now are happy and healthy and super loving. and I couldn't imagine life without my little buddies.
+mike mulligan Aw :( I am so sorry about your ratty!! They do have serious health issues and I think that is because some folks breed for feeders and then they end up in the pet supply chain and bring their bad genes with them. I'm not on board with the whole feeder rat thing ... ugh! I'm glad you have a couple of good buddies. They are excellent companions when they aren't chewing the baseboards or your clothes. Like you, mine feast with me when they can too. Thanks for watching! I have tons of video on my computer with zero time to edit!! :)
+Tiny Tails Hammocks I understand the need to feed a pet snake but there are prepackaged mice for this. I think feeder breeding is unethical, some will inbreed for generations and the end result is bad genetics and tumors. feeder breeding is selfish and is the biggest cause of poor genetics. I eat with my rats or at least feed them my food in their cage (if I'm not feeling well) because the normal rat food for the most part contains things that are horrible for your little fluff buddies, I figure if its good for human consumption its good for them. besides I know if I were them I would like real food and not some dried pellets. I'm in the middle of house training my youngest rat, I like to let them run around my room all they want and play. but he still won't eat outside of his cage. he his happy and brave and loves cuddles but still won't eat outside like my others. have you ever run into this problem? if so did you fix it?
I got a rat called minnie malone the other day and I want to train her how to walk. Her favourite food is quavers and... how long before I can take her out
Awww so cute! I have two dogs and I'm planning on getting rats. I'd love to get them used to wearing harnesses and a leash and take them out sometimes. Only during summer though, wouldn't want them to get cold in the snow and I have a feeling that there are no overalls for rats in the market. I'd like to have a rat that I can take pretty much anywhere with me. I had rabbits as a kid and they had harnesses. With most of them I did a good job with getting them used to the feeling of wearing them and being restrained with a leash but with one I rushed a bit too much. I took her out without any training and she panicked and started to scream... When getting any animal to wear outdoor gear, remember to let them wear it without a leash first in a place they feel safe in. Give them lots of treats and praises. When they're okay with it, you can start leash training and after that take them out.
This is a fancy rat. These rats are bred as pets. I would recommend a pet rat breeder over a pet store, even if it takes more effort and time to find a pair.
I love rats I used to own alot to and have them in and out of the cage I also used to sell them when I worked in a pet shop awhile ago I loved it selling all animals
I know this video is old, but its super helpful to me. Im looking into getting one or two rats next year, but im trying to research them first as i dont know much about them, and as i dont have a garden i feel like i would probably want to take them out on a leash
Here is some wise advice: Get two same sex ratties (from a private breeder, if possible) and if you’re extra dedicated (and can afford it and have the time), a third. Rats are happier living with other rats to play and keep warm. www.nfrs.org/articles_company.html If you don’t have a garden or yard, find a garden or yard where you know there are no chemical treatments on the vegetation and let them explore there! I would say most rats aren’t comfortable being outside because of the light/noise, but they will absolutely love a room where they can climb all over you! A bathroom is the safest, most fun place I’ve found to hang out with my little friends.
@@tinytailsandme ok cool, im thinking about getting them from a pet store near me as they have a good reputation, and their small animals are already housed together, so I'd know that they are ok with each other. I dont have a yard or garden, but there are 3 parks within 10 minutes of my flat, so i was thinking about harness training and eventually taking them to them when they're ready
I feel like the main points that im concerned about would be keeping them warm (considering hammocks, nests and pet pockets) and also entertainment. I know that parrot toys tend to be good
Mrs. Sesshomaru The harness isn't really meant to restrain them. It's meant as more of a guide. If Nonnie wanted out of it, she could probably get out. It should not restrict blood flow or their breathing, obviously. You should be able to put your finger in between the harness and the rat easily.
Yes, it loosens and tightens the harness. Since there are no buckles or fasteners, the clamp on the leash string pulls it tight on top (this also helps the harness fit more than one of my rats...although all but one are too big now!).
+Livena Tso Hello there! I see you made this comment forever ago and I'm so sorry I didn't see it! I purchased the harness from a store on Etsy. The store has been "on vacation" for a long time, so I'm not sure if they'll open again, but their address is www.etsy.com/shop/ArtRatsAndJewelry - good luck!
I know you commented this 4 years ago, but in case anyone else is wondering the same thing, I found this harness on Amazon that looks like the same style: smile.amazon.com/iGotRats-Adjustable-Harness-Pack-Leashes/dp/B07V6VFY5S/ref=sr_1_7?dchild=1&keywords=rat+harness&qid=1594520449&sr=8-7
Storm the Guinea pig She was handled a lot in her stay at the pet store and once we took her home, we also handled her a lot. We have group play a couple of hours a day and I try to handle each of them individually every day to get them used to it. Out of the six rats I've had, only half have had this temperament...the others are friendly, but don't enjoy cuddling.
could never happen in my neighborhood. We have hawks...they took a cat last week. I'm starting to admire rats. They seem affectionate and extremely intelligent.
+EverythingGrand Oh wow! Hawks! Yeah, that would be VERY dangerous. We are lucky to live in an urban area with hardly any daytime wildlife. If you ever get rats in the future, I've seen where people have built them little cages for outside (out of 2x4's and chicken wire) and their rats can have some outside time in the grass and still be protected from above. I love these little guys! I never would have thought they'd be my type of pet :)
Trust me when I say Nonnie was not like that at first! She naturally has a calmer temperament than most of my rats, but we also worked at it. It took me several short sessions to get the harness on and to get her to walk (inside). Lots of treats!!
Tiny Tails Hammocks cool. Mine is a mouse lol. How old is Nona? Mine is white with red eyes, he is about 2 weeks only! But he will be a rat when he is older. Thanks for your sweet commet, by the way.
No sorry needed! Nonnie is six months old in this video. Congrats on your mouse, she must be TINY! I've always wondered if rats and mice would get along, but probably not. I've seen some really awesome mouse tricks! I'm not as patient to teach tricks. My rats have trained ME though!
Tiny Tails Hammocks thank u.:-) shes so small, she looks less than six months, but she is very cute! he is very tiny, but really fat! Lol. Me either, I don't really teach my guy mouse tricks at all. How did u teach her to walk on a harness? I always wanted to know so that my guy (frosty) can learn how when he is older, I'm going to buy him a harness or make him one. I like her name by the way. Its cute. Thanks so much again for replying, you and your mouse are so so so sweet!!!
That is good they make those leashes nowadays. I mean maybe they did have them back in the 90s but we didn't know it. It was early 90s and my sisters & I would take our pet rats for walks. OFF leash. They survived just fine but then we were super responsible with it. I don't think there are birds of prey living in Hawaii though. It was in Hawaii.
I love how those passerby would stop and pet your rat! How nice (:

The voice you use to talk to her is so cute 😚
harness training went great with my ferrets- definitely need to work on the rats
+rin bradley I think ferrets are much more suited for walking on a harness, but rats with an outgoing and tolerant personality do well too...mostly :)
Does it get fleas
I would be so so scared of something happening to my baby while outside 😅
I got a rat called minnie malone the other day and I want to train her how to walk. Her favourite food is quavers and... how long before I can take her out
It’s been 8 months! How is your rat doing?
Rat? I believe you mean DOG MOUSE
Oh my god how cute ❤
I'm a rat lover but I find it hilarious that you're walking a rat around on a leash (but it is something I thought about doing)
That is too cute!!
I love rats I love them I love them they're fantastic they are incredible
this is the best! thank you 😃
Like omg his is so adorable.
can u please do a video of how to put it on
Awwww so cute☺☺☺❤❤❤❤❤,I just bought a rat harnesses at petsmart
When they're okay with it, you can start leash training and after that take them out.
such a good girl!!!
Que hermosa tu ratita ☺️☺️☺️
Can they catch things more easily if exposed to areas where wild rats are? I have no idea im just wondering
What kind of rat is that? Im looking to buy one 🙂
I take my girls for a walk too. I don't use a harness though. They know who Momma is. I know for safety reasons it's best tho.

If you don’t have a garden or yard, find a garden or yard where you know there are no chemical treatments on the vegetation and let them explore there!
I know that parrot toys tend to be good
Jessica Mcauley Here are some ideas of toys you can make yourself! www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm
Jessica Mcauley Also, check out #petrats on Instagram. There is an entire community of people who constantly post their rats and cages!
Normalizing pet rates!! Yes! 🙌
Sooo cuuuute 😍😍😍🐀🐀🐀
Cute little Rat. 😊
Anyone know where to get a good rat harness, that isn’t extremely expensive, from?
SO CUTE AWWW
How do you know it isn't so tight to the point that it's uncomfortable?
Mrs. Sesshomaru The harness isn't really meant to restrain them. It's meant as more of a guide. If Nonnie wanted out of it, she could probably get out. It should not restrict blood flow or their breathing, obviously. You should be able to put your finger in between the harness and the rat easily.
Thanks for your response!
What's the function of the "grape" on the nape of the harness? Is it a thing for tightening or loosening the harness?
Yes, it loosens and tightens the harness. Since there are no buckles or fasteners, the clamp on the leash string pulls it tight on top (this also helps the harness fit more than one of my rats...although all but one are too big now!).
Idk why but 2:15 kinda sounded like Miranda sings :0
I say that to my ratties lol
"You're so little and cute! Look at your little hands."
DeCarlos Jones I was dazzled by my rats’ cuteness every single day!
When a rabbit on a leash see a dog they can die of stress do rats do that too?
I am not a vet, so I do not know, however, we made sure we were away from other animals.
Shes sto so cute
This is so cool !!!!!
Love the video
I LOVE YOUR PET RAT!!!!!!!!!!
Non Binary Transgendered Teddy Bear Hamster THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
I must not be the only one here who is making kissy noices.
It’s been five years and I STILL come back to make kissy noises ❤️
How did you make that harness???
That rat is so silly😁😁😁
That was amazing
That's so cute but yeah be careful ❤
Does the rat need vaccines to be able to handle outside environment such as the grass where other animals are and urine and such.. ?
She did not get vaccines, but she was treated prior with mite/flea preventative.
Thank u
How did you tame her
Storm the Guinea pig She was handled a lot in her stay at the pet store and once we took her home, we also handled her a lot. We have group play a couple of hours a day and I try to handle each of them individually every day to get them used to it. Out of the six rats I've had, only half have had this temperament...the others are friendly, but don't enjoy cuddling.
What type of raccoon is that?
He says "I'm in danger down here!" HELP!
could never happen in my neighborhood.
Tiny Tails Hammocks so good to know thank you for the advice! Will do!
Nonnie's adorable. I'm reminded of two former does of my own. Where did you get the harness?
RedNightDragon1 If you look in the comments on the original post, I put some leash information. Unfortunately that Etsy shop has closed.
My two boys absolutely refuse to wear these to the point where they are scratching the hell out of my hands trying to fight not to go in them.
Trust me when I say Nonnie was not like that at first! She naturally has a calmer temperament than most of my rats, but we also worked at it. It took me several short sessions to get the harness on and to get her to walk (inside). Lots of treats!!
Good job!!! What a cute mouse.:-)
Thank you! She is precious. Nonnie is actually a fancy rat, but she is very small like a mouse; she's not rat like at all!
Tiny Tails Hammocks cool. Mine is a mouse lol. How old is Nona? Mine is white with red eyes, he is about 2 weeks only! But he will be a rat when he is older. Thanks for your sweet commet, by the way.
Tiny Tails Hammocks sorry for calling her a mouse, meant rat.:-\ she is small!
Lol. We're popular now... Haha. That's cute!
