Arjan Vailly was born around 1876 in Rurka village in Ludhiana. He was a tall man, said to be six and a half feet. He didn’t tolerate deception and was often seen with long stick alias gandasa. He was said to be a wealthy man having a lot of properties but he was prominently known for helping those in need. As per stories, he, once, broke a policeman’s arm in order to protect a poor person from being mistreated and earned the nickname ‘Vailly’, and became Arjan Vailly. It is also stated that he assisted a lot of people from the Muslim community in settling in Malerkotla during the 1947 partition. He also helped his Muslim friend Ralla Teli and ensured his safe passage to Malerkotla besides safeguarding his gold and silver as a deposit, and later, handing it over to his friend’s son.
