Ferrari's heroic failure with its special Monza F1 upgrades explained

  • Ferrari gave it everything for its home grand prix at Monza. It went aggressive with its set up choices, put fresh engines in both cars, and at a track that was always going to play to its car’s limited set of strengths, it did all it could to maximise those traits, hoping its gamble might be enough to upset Red Bull.
While the result may have felt inevitable even on Saturday afternoon when Carlos Sainz beat Max Verstappen to pole, Ferrari put up as much of a fight as could have been expected - giving the tifosi plenty to cheer for in a season where that has rarely been the case.

I definitely won’t calling it “a failure”, it’s the Scuderia’s best performance so far this season. The car was fast all weekend, Carlos and Charles were the only two that can gave two bulls a good run for their money. Yes the RB19 is still superior and Max seems like he’s immune to any type of curse. But compared to the Dutch GP, Ferrari improved quite a lot not. If they can keep this momentum going, maybe that second place in the constructor championship is a valid goal.

(Perez was 3,5 second behind Leclerc at lap 17, he was in Leclerc DRS zone 2 laps later when Sainz pitted).

The FIA's hard cost cap has caused this current F1 dominance to happen -- teams can no longer spend money to catch up.
To fix it, the FIA should make 2 changes to the cost cap rules.
#1 Make the cost cap scale. The teams finishing higher get a smaller budget and the teams finishing lower get a bigger budget. (Like FIA already does for wind tunnel time.)
#2 Change the cost cap from a hard cap to a soft cap. That way if a big team wants to spend a lot of money above their cost cap limit to catch up to a rival team, then they can. But for doing so they will have to pay a large luxury fee for going over their cap. The luxury fee money is then equally given to all the other teams. (This would also help the smaller teams since they will receive some "free" money to help them in their own development.)

Also I wouldn't say they failed: This year's RB is one of the greatest F1 cars ever to hit a track, the fact that Ferrari made RB work a bit for the win made them a success, even if they weren't in the running for the win.

Remember the mercedes domination years when they beat the previous red bull domination record? When only they won every race all year? When we knew from the first race which driver was going to win the WDC several years in a row?
When "an almost victory contender" means "finishing under 20 seconds down the road. Thats not normal for F1.

Aw, come on, be fair. Ferrari downplayed any chances of a podium to global media before the start, and redbull were maclaren of the 80's dominant.
But we enjoyed one of the most exciting races of the year so far from front to back of the grid. And those side by side battles round curve grande, and a bit of hard but fair bumps and elbows up stuff? Awesome. And Sargent, piastri, lawson as rookies impressive against the experienced drivers, impressing teams and fans, Monza delivered a real old fashioned edge of the seat glittering Ruby of a race. One we should all remember during the newer glitzy, but often dull fly away races.

It's funny how every team that comes second to Red Bull starts claiming 'we understand the car better now' and 'we're optimistic for the future' and 'we're going in the right direction' just for them to fall off at the next race.
That's why I am telling you Red Bull will be dominant until at least 2026. Because where the other teams are still figuring things out, Red Bull has already figured things out and are now just refining an already dominant car. So for the others to catch up they first have to close the current gap and then they need to find more time to close the gap Red Bull will have found for the next year. No team is going to close that gap in two years because if they want to close that gap they have to go above and beyond their A game. The package of Red Bull, Honda, Newey, Horner and last but not least Max is just too dominant. It's basically the dream team.

But isn't it awful that we judge their races at least partially (and that's quite a big part) by how much the team screws the race up? That _should_ be the easiest (relatively speaking) thing to fix. The crew know their jobs, one assumes, and their strategists on joining the team, undoubtedly have a good track record (pun not really intended). If the latter aren't so good, get some who are. That should be the cheapest "fix".
Were I at Ferrari, I'd be doing everything I could to recruit Lena Gade! She was behind a number of Le Mans wins with Audi (beating the team's other cars with equally talented drivers and crew, and when things were close), went to do a completely different job elsewhere for a couple of years, and then went to Indy and I believe she adapted really quickly and had success there. She's one of the most respected engineers who can adapt strategy on the fly, and that's according to a number of drivers I've heard talking about her, let alone the commentators who see her presence as being one major step towards winning.
I know that just because someone's good at one job, it doesn't mean automatic success in a similar but different one. But it's definitely worth a punt given how many times they've snatched defeat from the jaws of victory!
Having said that, the Charlies did Ferrari proud yesterday. Carlos managed to break this year's record of laps led (not including pitstop changes in the order as that's pretty artificial) by someone not called Max. Fourteen whole laps!

Still a little disappointed in Ferrari. I thought they could have used Leclerc to put more pressure on Verstappen to help Sainz defending or get him less pressure. Sure Leclerc was saving his tyres but I think they would have got the third place even with Leclerc tyres going off earlier. Also the fighting in Ferraris with each other was just silly, imo. They could as usual made a mess of a potential good result now it worked out but that somewhat tells me what state Ferrari is in at the moment. Confusion and lack of clear directions. In my view they should have as Sainz said just taken the cars over the finish line especially seeing the last effort from Leclerc with a massive lock up and Sainz defending waas a situation with potential mistakes.

If making Max “work” by trailing Sainz for 15 laps, and only because of Sainzs’ questionable defense, which both Charles and Sainz agreed in post race interview that they were pushing the rules with swerving in breaking zones, is laughable. They clearly got home race favor from Stewards in attempt to keep the race close. Yes, it was an enjoyable race but any talk of Ferrari making Max work must be prefaced with questionable defense tactics.

people say Red Bull have the fastest car, but the more you look into the team, the more you see that's not really that true... Redbull can have 10 weak spots, and 1 strong one, and they will work into using that 1 strong point to balance it out, this goes not just to car development, but to strategies and driver management, and Ferrari need to learn from that... they need to look at numbers and what they need to do to take the best out of the situation, and they are not doing that at most cases

What happened to the Ferrari in the race was to be expected. The setup of an f1 car is a compromise. It's a bit like a blanket that's too short and every time you pull it to
cover your feet, your head comes off and vice versa. It was clear that Ferrari had bet everything on top speed and that they would end up paying the bill, as they did. At the end of a handful of laps, it was already clear that it would only be a matter of time before Max passed Sainz due to the high level of degradation that the setup chosen by Ferrari was causing (the setup made the car faster on the straight, but they lost out in terms of tires). Max never pushed too hard precisely because he soon realized that the pace Sainz was setting to try to keep Max at bay would destroy the Spaniard's tires and it would only be a matter of time). It was an illusion and Ferrari was never in a position to discuss the race (Ferrari developed that precise setup to create the illusion in the tiffosi of a good qualifying. They knew that the setup was favorable on one lap, but it was much worse in the race).
