I am always soooooo thankful Pal and Magne believed in Morten and created this Amazing Trio that is A-ha-----We have truly been blessed by this music and voice!!!!!!!
This song always moves me. I was always close to my parents. They weren’t thrilled when I left the rural homestead to live 2k miles away in NYC! But they were always my safety net. 🥰 When my father was diagnosed with cancer, I moved back. Couldn’t stand to be that far away while he was going through chemo, etc. After he passed, I felt I couldn’t leave my mother here alone, so I’m still here. ❤
My very first thought (back in the 80's...) was that out of water comes life. I.e. life finds a way... things feel fluid, but the growth will come with time... possibly just me :-D - and therein lies the genius of @aha.
A love song to your parents, in gratitude for all they have given you in terms of love and personal qualities. Rootlessness in the loss of them, the blue feeling, sadness, but because your parents have given you all these qualities you yourself are able to create a green future, growth, life and new generations.
@@mattsnider2667 It is hard to see them disappear. My father passed five years ago. My mother will probably be leaving for him soon. I can't help but be grateful that I got to have them for so long. I hope your parents have many good years ahead of them.
@@ahkkariq7406 My condolences about your father, and best of luck to you and your mom in that regard. And yes, I'm very lucky to have great parents, and that they've lived this long. Plus I still live relatively close to them (about an hour's drive), and I go see them once a week. Eat dinner, watch movies, work on puzzles. Good stuff. :)
What I like about a-ha is this subtle blend of power and emotion in the same song. Both musically and vocally we alternate between the two, we go through different emotions. "Father....." almost a shout "Like a river...." gently, just delicious...
I have 100% noticed that! I've even used the adjective "cinematic" in regard to a couple songs specifically. So yes, I certainly feel that (and as a score-enthusiast myself, perhaps that's one of the reasons the album is hitting me so strongly). Cheers, Philip.
A beautiful song, very intelligently written. Like a lot of their stuff, there's something for everyone in this. Like a personal voyage acknowledging past mistakes or current difficulties. 'Like a river I'm flowing, I need something to chain me down', and 'As I touched the horizon it just felt like I'd die soon, '
I think it’s a thankyou to your parents and my second fave song after hurry home. I think you’ll love it it’s heavier. Take care and i’ll catch you next time. Your flying through them fast. Take care and thankyou again for doing this Matt not many people are interested in AHA or their music. 😘🇳🇴🏴
I love this song so much, although Morten's voice is here brilliant as always, it's more the lyrics that touch me so much about this song. This pre-pain that is always present because you can lose someone you love at any time. Nothing lasts forever, you have no control over when to lose someone, that powerlessness expressed so well in the line "Part of life you can't choose it". I get goosebumps every time I hear this Song and it touches me so deep inside. Father My wings are clipped See the steps that made me trip Now I'm so lonely Mother Time's frozen flame Seem to linger in the rain Holding me only Like a river I'm flowing And there's no way of knowing If I'm coming or going I need something to chain me down But it don't matter My eyes have seen, For better Out of blue comes green Mother I have gone wrong Work my fingers to the bone All I've been doing Father Proud that I am To be born into such hands Your love so renewing And I know I can lose it Part of life you can't choose it As I touched the horizon It just felt like I'd die soon Don't matter My eyes have seen For better Out of blue comes green 'Out of blue comes green'
Watching your reactions to a-ha is so weird for me. I have not listened to any of this stuff for at least 15 years, but with every song I instantly recognize it and start remembering the whole thing. It is great seeing how you experience this all for the first time. They were much better (apart from Hurry Home, of course) than I remember.
Why did you stop listening to them? I can’t go a single day without listening to them in some form or another…it’s an addiction I know, but a-ha is my drug of choice !
@@marjoriemcbride6557 Songs can be attached to memories and events. They can remind you of times, people and places, both positively and negatively. Many of their songs brought memories that I didn't want to think about and it took me a long time to get over it. I am OK with it now.
You said something Matt about how they write for his voice, and you are spot on Paul and magne have said that, and magne has said even today when he writes songs it’s hard to do it without thinking of how morten would sound singing it. These earlier albums were also constructed to show case morten’s vocals. That changes as the albums go on. I love morten’s lower vocal range, and he uses it plenty on the next album. 😁
I’m with you guys … Although I love Morten’s falsetto range and am constantly and consistently amazed by it, I absolutely *ADORE* when he uses his lower register more, so EOTSWOTM will forever be one of my favorite albums of all time - from any artist. That said, “Out of Blue Comes Green” is heartbreakingly beautiful, and one of my favorite songs ever.
Its funny. I remember hearing Magne (keyboards, guitar and song writer) saying for press on a later album, that Stay on these Roads was frustrating for the band because they didn't get to break out and go big as they wanted to..... but if this wasn't big and break out, I don't know what they had planned !!!!!The mind Boggles.
Sorry, Matt. Never left a comment before, in spite of the fact I’ve watched SO many of your A-ha reactions. All of which, I’ve adored my friend. Thank you. Just wanted to say.
This song just blows me away with Mortens voice and the sonics too... Just wish it would never stop..... I appreciate the deep dive of my favorite band. My first album at 15!!. We went with my 25yo son and best friend who was with me when we both bought the album to see them in 2020 in New Zealand just before NZ went into lockdown. Rick Astley was supporting act and almost outshone them, until the first beat of Take on Me..... Thanks for the breakdown of the songs and your interpretation of the words and reactions to the words and layers of music and styles that a-ha takes us on over the years. They are the soundtrack to my life in so many ways.... Cannot understand how they are not bigger than they are. :-) If u get a chance try a couple of other bands as we seem have similar tastes - Underworld, and Pseudo Echo, Icehouse from Australia.
Oh okay, cheers, I've never heard of any of those other groups you suggested. Will put them on the list (I'm especially intrigued by the name Icehouse, so maybe I'll try to find them first). And you're right----a-ha deserve so much attention than they seem to get, which I've learned dozens of times over in the last year.

This is it. In my opinion, "Out of Blue Comes Green" is the best song on "Stay On These Roads." I didn't think I'd have anything more to say other than that, but I realized as I was listening that I never realized how much it tonally resembles "The Promise" by Arcadia. It's largely in the use of the bass, but it's there.
Thank you…I enjoyed watching you react to this one, because it is a great a-ha song. If you read the lyrics I think you’ll get a better handle on what they mean. I think it’s an homage by a son to his parents, almost like he’s done something he’s not proud of in the past but is trying to make up it to them.
Ah, I see! I did pick up on that possibility at first but wasn't able to follow all the lines, clearly. But cheers, will give this some more listens with that in mind.

What a great band highly underrated in America but are still making records and actively touring.
Remember this was in 1988. Not many bands sounded this experimental. I guess only the true fans recognised the genius of it.
AHA giving gratitude to their parents for allowing them to leave Norway and follow their dreams and looking to what the future will be for them.

Father
My wings are clipped
See the steps that made me trip
Now I'm so lonely
Mother
Time's frozen flame
Seem to linger in the rain
Holding me only
Like a river I'm flowing
And there's no way of knowing
If I'm coming or going
I need something to chain me down
But it don't matter
My eyes have seen,
For better
Out of blue comes green
Mother
I have gone wrong
Work my fingers to the bone
All I've been doing
Father
Proud that I am
To be born into such hands
Your love so renewing
And I know I can lose it
Part of life you can't choose it
As I touched the horizon
It just felt like I'd die soon
Don't matter
My eyes have seen
For better
Out of blue comes green
