  • In this one, we go to one of my favorite places on the planet: The Rock Shed in Keystone, South Dakota! I stumbled upon this amazing shop almost a decade ago, and since then it has maintained its spot as my number one Favorite rock shop! Ran by fantastic people who are always so kind, prices that are so much more than just fair, and quality that is nearly unmatched, the Rock Shed is truly one of a kind! We may have gone rockhounding on our trip through the Black Hills, but making a stop to THIS place was the Primary purpose for driving 6 hours to South Dakota. I am always blown away by the jewelry quality of all of their stones, but their labradorite in particular is on another level. Yes there are the normal blues, oranges, and gold tones, but also greens, teals, lavenders, reds, pinks, and by far my favorite and the least common of all labradorite colors, Royal Purple!!!!! After our shopping spree we head back to the shop and cut a bunch of our rocks, revealing some outstanding colors hiding in our labradorite! I hope you all enjoy this one, and I will have another one out very soon!
I seriously can not recommend this place highly enough. If you ever find yourself in the Black Hills of South Dakota, ABSOLUTELY make a visit over to The Rock Shed! If you can't make it in person however, check out their website down below! THE number one shop I've found for tumbling supplies and equipment, as well as lapidary equipment, saw blades, rocks of all sizes and varieties, top notch fossils, polished specimens, and so much more. I'd like to clarify that they have certainly not paid me or even asked me to promote them; I love their products and service so much that I do it from my own desire to whenever possible!

I am running a booth at the Billings Gem and Mineral Show at the Billings Hotel & Convention Center August 3rd-6th, and am doing a Meet and Greet August 4th from 11:30 a.m.- 12:30! Here is a link to the event page; even if you don't think you can make it in person, selecting "interested" on the event page is a massive help for me that is greatly appreciated! I hope to see all of you there, and Rock on!

I love the Rock Shed! I stopped there when I drove through the area last February. It was so cold outside that I was only able to tolerate frozen fingers, toes, and nose for about an hour... yet I still managed to spend $333.33!
I also purchased some labradorite, and I seen can confirm how absolutely amazing it is!

Well you all have heard the comment if I won the lottery I would find a small cabin close to this build a bigger building for all my lapidary supplies and polish my little heart out oh that would be fun to carve some angel light I think that' s what you called it because it was so soft..... Well I finally figured out what I want to be when I grow up I'm 70 now so I'd be happy in that little cabin with all my rocks and first I got to play the lotto though.... One thing I love though is how much you both enjoy being together and plan and picking up those rocks that's the best part...

It was just a giddy surprise, to see the slabs as you lifted then up! And the purple labradorite is my absolute favorite and those are just amazing! What an awesome amount of rock you got at the rock shed, but more than that, the quality is unbelievable! So good! Thank you Theo, for the outing and the cutting and i cant wait to see what you have left, after the show!

Wow! So many beautiful labradorite, they are mesmerizing!
I would like to ask you if you sometime cut or grind some of the slab edges, especially the ones at the top of the best viewing angles?
I'm asking because labradorites are formed with multiple layers from clear, colored, smokey and some more opaque ones.
And as with any stone, it needs light to reveal its beauty. But if the edges are opaque it leaves only the light hitting the cut slab portion to reveal the colors...
And if you happen to cut through a smokey layer, the light doesn't get to reach all the layers and limits the possible viewing angles the colors get to be seen...
Because when the light gets through some clear side angles, it's the hole piece interior that gets lit which allows many internal layers that formed with a different angle to shine and reflect as well!
But you've probably done it with other stones in previous videos that I haven't had a chance to see yet. It's the first time your video gets suggested to me 😊
And this rock shed place is a stone cutter paradise! Enjoy them all!
    Thanks!
