We Malaysians and our Singaporean kin do this in every day conversation so it’s nothing really. You’ll see it a lot of you visit both countries. In Malaysia, ordering food in 4 languages in a sentence is common!

Most people who work there just usually describe ourselves as civil servants to strangers - regardless of where in the civil service they work. Or in this case, as “working for the government.” It doesn’t mean anything other than trying not to draw unnecessary attention to their jobs.
Yup, civil servant here! I always just say i work for the government to foreigners (or that I’m a civil servant to locals) cos i dont like disclosing details about my job (like its my business, not anyone else’s, what i do for a living). Plus being in the civil service means we *are* bound by codes of conduct etc which kinda affects the way we can conduct ourselves in public spaces.
I can totally relate to the humidity joke! Haha! I used to do Uber and picked up 2 Aussie guys. I told them 'hows the heat here treating you?' And they answered 'its not the heat but the humidity'. We laughed but I did thought to myself 'I never thought about humidity here'.
