I just found Dave Allen so endearing. He had such a charming and charismatic persona. He probably had alcoholic tendencies, however I loved him so much! May his soul rest in peace 🌹❤️
I thoroughly enjoyed Dave Allen's comic genius. I was addicted to his tv shows every week on the ABC in Australia. My late parents refused to watch him but I always got a laugh from Dad when I repeated his jokes. He was truly the best comedian ever. The young ones today dont have a clue they think the f&$K word often makes for good laughs. Their just stupid.
Dave Allen was a comic I grew up looking at, okay he'd tackle any topic, sometimes his language was colourful but, he always had me in knots laughing. The people who complained obviuosly just couldn't understand the wit that went into his comedy, and obviously never laughed about much in their lives. He is still sadly missed by every one, as there are very few comedians of his calibre around anymore. As Dave himself used to say "Goodbye and may your god go with you. .."
+Maria Mc Coy You've made a lovely, well-made comment. Dave seemed to be a little ahead of his time. There will always be those who complain, but they only end up emphasising the comedian's edge and appeal.
+hjjude I suppose it as the way Dave tackled the topics it was such a typical Irish way of thinking and not everyone understands that. Personally some of it hit the nail on the head - the thing about airplanes has always had me in stitches as my dad was a pilot and always reminds me of him. I am glad I found it Dave Allen online, and it is really entertaining compared to modern ones.
+hjjude To say DA was a little ahead of his time, is a massive understatement. Thinking back, it's amazing the BBC let him do what he did. He was the first comedian (that I can remember) who was on mainstream TV & openly took the piss out of religion. Groundbreaking stuff...!!!
+Maria Mc Coy Same here. The guy was a legend of my childhood & could probably be described, as one of the best comedians ever. Certainly one of the most influential. It's great watching all this, all years later, & laughing even louder, because a lot more things make sense now.
Absolute comic genius, miss him so much. A real down to earth person. Does anyone remember the program he did on eccentric ordinary people. His Last six week hour long standup back in the early nineties used to have my then fiance, which we lived together in absolute tears with laughter every week. Sadly went way before his time . Love you Dave RIP x
As a non native speaker I found his tonality, accent, word choices and witty way of perpetuating the funny ideas the ideal of English language itself. Not to mention the stance, face expressions, harizma...Regardless of funny part, it must have been a real joy to have any kind of conversation with him.
Peter King Indeed. May your god go with you implies that you may have a different god to me but I respect your belief. I believe Dave was an atheist but as you say preaches tolerance. Ironically this forms a huge part of religion though sadly it is not always practised. Dave was for me the best stand up or should it be sit down comedian ever with perfect timing and completely at ease with comedian's silence cf Tony Hancock.
Dave Allen reminds me of an Irish doctor I had. He would cut me up with his side-splitting antics and the way he looked at life.Dr. Williams would prescribe laughter therapy to help the immune system. My doctor says to watch comedies to help boost my immune system. I have never felt so good laughing this much! I really miss Dave's wit and how he made me laugh. I hadn't seen this episode before, but it reminded me: My employers were bought out by a bunch of Americans at the end of the 90's. The new boss held the customary pep talk. He gave us a new business motto: "Can Do, Will Do, Do Do". The room fell apart. He was dumbfounded. No-one ever managed to take him seriously again. If anyone said "Can do...." we were off again. Thank you for sharing that video. I remember watching when I was a little bit younger lol. However, this time I thought I may never breathe again lol. I had tears gushing in a torrent down my face lol. He was a rare talent, may his God bless him. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Dave Allen was one of the original 'observational' comedians and brilliant with it. A past master of life's little ironies and idiosyncracies. Much of his humour was based on what he saw as the hypocracy of the Catholic church. He simply told it how it was and made us laugh at ourselves. Bravo Dave Allen, bravo.
I saw Dave Allen Live at the Bath Theatre Royal back in the early 1980's. The guy went on and on for over 2 hours without a break, just a small glass of whisky on the table next to him. I recall nearly being hospitalised, my sides ached so much afterwards. That was the fastest two hours I have ever lived through. Despite the circumstances, in this video he is still rather restrained compared with what he was like on stage. Still amazingly funny however. I recall seeing this video when it first went out on the BBC.Dave Allen was a real genius. It's so sad that the PC brigade have managed to spoil comedy for everyone. It's an even greater shame that Dave Allen is no longer with us.
He drinks ginger ale with ice. The whisky-like glass and the tall chair (in his youth, late he stand up) were part of the act (the cool controled irishman). He was an obsesive comedian genius.
yes Dean, same for me, nobody made me laugh like this man, I only discovered him last month, and watch him everyday several times , he was such a genious, you are very lucky if you saw him on stage ... cheers !
Deceased in 2005. For what he did and for how professional he was in going about it ALL the time, he qualifies as one of the great humanitarians and the world's best-loved Irishman of his time. Good night. Thank you. May his god go with him.
I learned that while watching Dave, simply do not consume any food/drink, or you WILL find yourself spitting it across the room at some point while hysterically laughing.
Who could ever forget him. I remember when he used to send up Catholics. He once claimed that the Pope used to take bets in the confessional. In the early years there was a glass of whisky on a table next to him. But in later years when he stopped drinking water was his drink of choice. He was Ireland's national treasure of comedy.
Saw him once at the Bath Theatre Royal (circa 1981/82). He went on for two whole hours without a break. The stuff he was coming out with made the BBC stuff comparatively tame. It was the only time in my life when I have literally gone home with aching sides after seeing a show. Never before; never since. I don't think I could have taken much more. The funny things he said about pedestrian crossing alone were brilliant. Little, if anything, of his material we had heard already on the Beeb. Unlike other comedians of the day, such as Kelly Monteith whose routine was quite a lot of what we had seen on the telly (no criticism intended).
Absolute comic genius his delivery his facial expressions were perfect... Amazing story Teller and so controversial in his day he was banned on Irish TV because of his jokes on religion so we Irish only discovered years later.... Love him to bits pure gentleman
Apart from his top class material he was such a great comic as he came across as one of your friends. He was never aloof and gave the impression that he was talking to you. Too many comedians are just so into themselves and you know they are telling jokes that have been written for them.
His best One, Is where he explains how to tell the time to a child, After watching that, I dont know how I ever learned how to tell the time, Brilliant.
AAAAH!! R.I.P. DAVE ALLEN . BRILLANT ! HILARIOUS!!! LOVED THIS TOTALLY !!!!! MISSED GREATLY!!!!! ALL HIS SHOWS IN MY CONSERVATIVE PARENTS. FROM U.K.(2021).
Great to see Dave is still with us through his many fans. In many of the following comments speculation is raised as to who is even remotely carrying on in his spirit in the field today. My answer might seem ridiculous at first glance--due to the very obvious differences in manner and context, etc--however, the more I think on it, in terms of Dave's spirit, his observational acuity & basic decency, the only possible contender is Data O' Briain. Not the TV/Mock stuff, obviously, but his live act. Two very different comedians separated by 50 years and culture and more, but they're both good eggs who respect their audiences and are sharp as hell. If only Dara would stop whoring for the Beeb, his inner Allen would really shine through.
I counted 38 expletives, that's roughly one every 10 seconds - and they were all unchallengeable because they were relevant to the context. It takes a special kind of genius to accomplish that...
One of the most underrated Irishman ever, i so miss his half hour shows where he sipped his whisky/ginger ale & held his smoke between his stunted finger, swapping it from one hand to the other as he regaled us with his genius.. good times.
I'm embarrassed to say that I just discovered this genius of a man today after watching vintage interviews of Robin William talking about another English comedian Peter Cook which led me to recommending videos of David Allen. My god this man was funny! Stayed up 3 in the morning watching his videos. Pure genius and sadly left us too early like all the great. BTW, Dave Allen seems to have adapted an American accent in his later years unlike his Irish/British accent earlier in his career. Anyone noticed this as well?
He is (was... unfortunately...) a most gifted actor. He convinces you instantly. He just tells you about reality, nothing funnier than that. When told by a genius like he was, that is. And that’s about the height of it.
I remember discovering old Dave Allen skits being run late at night on some obscure cable channel. I became an instant fan and watched for several years trying to see them all. He managed to be irreverent about so many issues yet closed with "may your god go with you " . How many today are willing to recognize that this planet has many different faiths? You follow yours and let everyone else follow theirs, wonderful solution but way to many groups try to impose their beliefs on everyone else.

Outstanding virtue never dies, it lives on through people with morality. "What is freedom of speech, if it cannot offend then it is not free speech." - Salman Rushdie.
I hope some day he will get the recognition he deserves ... during his lifetime he never compromised his principles, and always operated outside the cosy establishment of mainstream television comedy ... I think this, along with his unpredictability, unsettled a lot of people ... in some ways, he was the Bill Hicks of his generation :-)

Sounds brilliant! What I wouldn't give to timewarp to see him doing a live gig!
yes Dean, same for me, nobody made me laugh like this man, I only discovered him last month, and watch him everyday several times , he was such a genious, you are very lucky if you saw him on stage ... cheers !

Deceased in 2005.
For what he did and for how professional he was in going about it ALL the time, he qualifies as one of the great humanitarians and the world's best-loved Irishman of his time.
Good night.
Thank you.
May his god go with him.
Many thanks for posting this as a tribute to a unique talent.
I've been watching it 10 times and I still piss of laughter.
He is one of my all time fave comedians, there will never be anyone else like him
it's all about the delivery.. perfect timing, wording and body language.. hard work but a huge amounts of natural talent..👍
Dave, you are missed by many. R.I.P.
I always loved Dave Allen. Even now he can make me laugh 'til I cry. :D
Use to hang around an Irish pub for years, and nobody is better than an Irishman telling a good joke, and Dave Allen was the BEST YET!!
Best comedian ever full stop :)
Thank you.
Best comedian ever.
Not one joke flopped.
i was lucky enough to see him live many years ago he had everybody in stitches nothing was taboo
He was one of the best, along there with Rodney Dangerfield both so funny they would bring tears to my eyes.
LOVED THAT - " MAY YOUR GOD GO WITH YOU " R.I.P DAVE ALLEN . FROM U.K. (20210.
AAAAH!!
Genius genius and genius. I laugh a lot with Mr Dave Allen.
I counted 38 expletives, that's roughly one every 10 seconds - and they were all unchallengeable because they were relevant to the context. It takes a special kind of genius to accomplish that...
You counted 38 expletives? Shades of Mary Whitehouse!
One of the most underrated Irishman ever, i so miss his half hour shows where he sipped his whisky/ginger ale & held his smoke between his stunted finger, swapping it from one hand to the other as he regaled us with his genius.. good times.
Dave was a great comedian! I loved watching him on Channel 11 right before Dr. Who and Fawlty Towers. Classic stuff here! Thanks for posting!
Most eloquent, with perfect emotions and body/ face language comedian, for all time.
Application which will help you to clean and train your thoughts.
Eternal wisdom on one place: SCREENQUOTES
one of the only comedians who can make me laugh.
The Bible is an Irish book because it says ‘It began in the beginning’. By far the best comedian of his generation.
The Greatest of all!!
My mother had a strange expression when referring to Dave Allen - she used to say "he is very low". Watching this video brought the memory back !
Thanks for posting. What a lovely man he was.
Genius of a comic......AND STILL FUNNY IN 2019
byambarebyambare Not really.
@@Koreviking You forgot to finish the sentence with " to me".
oh my god i had forgotten how funny he was was. laughing out loud with tears rolling down my face ...i remember my mum and dad doing the same to his very early stuff but i didint understand to much of it then .
I grew up catholic
Watching Dave Allen was a revolutionary act.
It was the only time I heard laughter in the house
Dave Allen was a saint god bless him
Dave...you are so missed!
"Excuse me for laughing, I hadn't heard that one" ...
You are in for a real treat.
This is what a real human being sounds like. Love and RIP.
Classic, thankx for posting this!
I saw the brilliant man many years ago live in Edinburgh. He just cracked me up.....just pure brilliance and very much missed....
I laughed so much I nearly wet myself. And my jaw's absolutely aching.
Very much missed.... I love his work.
"I'm going for a dump." "No shit!" "No, it would be no shit if I was just going for a piss."
Outstanding virtue never dies, it lives on through people with morality. "What is freedom of speech, if it cannot offend then it is not free speech." - Salman Rushdie.
Watched him for so many years
@Travmapunk I'm 19 and I completely agree that he is one of the best comedians that lived.
Oh god, will he be missed!! Used to watch him on WTTW Ch11 in Chicago, early 80's, every sunday night. What a talent!!!
@Travmapunk Each to their own, I'm the same age and I could listen quite easily watch Dave Allen for hours.
he is one of the best
