      "The name of the black-owned bar in Detroit that caused the 1967 Detroit riot after it was raided and shut down by the Detroit Police Vice Squad was the "Blind Pig". The Blind Pig was located at the intersection of 12th Street and Clairmount Avenue in the city's Near West Side neighborhood. The raid on the Blind Pig on July 23, 1967, and the subsequent arrests of patrons sparked outrage among the African American community, leading to five days of rioting and unrest that resulted in 43 deaths and over 1,000 injuries."

    • @MonstersNotUnderTheBed
      @MonstersNotUnderTheBed Год назад +1

      The Blind Pig bar in Detroit was shut down by the Detroit Police in the early morning hours of July 23, 1967, for violating state liquor laws. The bar was operating without a proper license, selling alcohol after hours, and overcrowding patrons beyond capacity. The Detroit Police Vice Squad had been cracking down on illegal bars in the city, particularly those that catered to African American clientele.
      When the police raided the Blind Pig, they arrested more than 80 people, including the patrons and employees of the bar. The arrest of patrons, many of whom were celebrating the return of two Vietnam War veterans, quickly escalated into a confrontation between the police and the surrounding community, leading to protests, riots, and one of the deadliest civil disturbances in the history of the United States.

    I lived in Detroit until 1994 and when the neighborhood was white I didn't have any problems. Then in the 80s there was a period of older neighbors passing away and their children sold their homes to Blacks and they always seem ok. But that was when I started getting broke into. And I moved when I pulled up my driveway and there were 5 young black men running out of my house. So I bought a larger and nice house still in Detroit at 8 and Gratiot neighborhood still predominantly white full of police and firemen then they changed the rule that the police and fire had to stay in the city so they moved out and sold to Blacks and a few Vietnamese . Of course, now my garage got broke into by grabbing the bottom Connor and bending it up. After the second time, I learned to keep nothing in your garage they even stoled my trash cans to haul away my stuff. So I purchased heavy-duty security doors for my house and didn't have any more issues for a while but as the neighborhood got Blacker I started having parts taken off my car so I sold and moved out of Detroit and haven't had any issues in 25 years. I wish I could live in Detriot in good shape the houses are built better, have more character and cost less

      As a young boy in the late 80's and early 90's, crossing the ambassador bridge from Windsor into Detroit taught me the meaning of 'dystopia'. That bridge led you directly into a neighborhood where everything was boarded up, and shopping carts sat in the middle of the street. It was unreal to see. My young mind thought 'why don't they just clean it up?'

      What also didn't help was that in 1944 Detroit's then-mayor Edward Jeffries lobbied Congress for Federal funding to build expressways leading out of Detroit into the suburbs. In 1943; Detroit experienced what could now be considered a vague omen for the equally devastating and atrocious riots in 1967. Not many people outside of Detroit know about the 1943 riots because they were largely overshadowed by World War II. In the black community of Detroit; the rumor that started the 1943 riots was that two white men shot and killed a black mother and her child before throwing their bodies into the Detroit River whereas in the white community the rumor was that two black men had raped and beaten a white woman. I wonder which of those stories is more believable.

    "White flight"? This is ethnic cleansing and that term blames the targets who were driven out of their own city. They would never use such a term if blacks were removed from an area because they were made to feel unsafe, suggesting it was blacks fleeing like cowards. You want to complain about redlining, how about a 95% white city losing most of it's white population after a couple of years after they're targeted by violence by another racial group, so bad that these people leave their property and communities behind just to escape. That's real dispossession, much worse than a few people being rejected from some houses they were considering buying.

      Also, white people aren't "gentry". It's amazing that it's accepted to depict all white people as wealthy landowners. It's obviously false, and meant to depict whites as colonists disposessing blacks of their neighborhoods. In reality it's obviously just poor whites moving where rents are cheap because they can't afford to live in other areas. "Gentrification" is a racial slur. Western whites don't seem to object strongly to any term of abuse nowadays. Those who do object and demand respect are punished by the ruling class.

      It's why many people in California are moving to more conservative states. For example; Ben Shapiro and his family are either moving or have already moved to Nashville, TN. Tennessee is a traditionally Red state and Ben is vehemently conservative. Plus; Nashville typically has a greater amount of professional advantages over Memphis, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. Nashville is also home to a lot of colleges and universities with the most prestigious of these being Vanderbilt University. As Ben's wife is a doctor (given the numerous times he has rubbed her profession in our faces) she could easily find work at one of the city's numerous hospitals affiliated with a university.

    The "incident" of 1967 was more so motivated to excel the sale of new homes in the suburbs. The riot started on a Sunday and continued for about a week. My father and his brother in-law were visiting friends on the west side. We had moved to the Northwest side in 1965, off West Outer Drive, west of Sherwood Forest. In the late afternoon, they passed by the White Castle at Livernois and Military, north of Tireman and saw about 15-20 police cars parked there as if anticipating a conflict. They also notices a lot of cars with out of state license plates. They immediately headed home. Minutes later we hear that the riot had started. The issues of what caused this riot never really made sense. And the route taken by the rioters also made no sense. If it had anything to do with discrimination in housing, WHY were existing Black neighborhoods and businesses attacked? The rioters did not attack The General Motors Building, banks, or real estate offices. So where was the focus of the anger?
    The entire matter of the riot was focused on the riot itself and stirring up fear. The following day, Monday, phones were ringing on our street, calls from "alleged" Real Estate agents telling the neighbors that that their property values were falling and they they could make a contingency deal to buy a newer home outside of Detroit. For Sale signs went up rapidly on the northwest side, and there was a continued pattern of White residents leaving over the next three yeas. And to appear "not" to be discriminatory in the sales, these houses east of Greenfield were shown to Black middle class families while properties west of Greenfield were not at the time. There had always been a 20 year cycle of the Black middle class moving further north in Detroit that I saw starting in 1958 and increased by the mid 1960s. While the goal for an integrated society was given lip service, it was not what most White people wanted. And the make up of neighborhoods was largely controlled by the Real Estate industry that largely was responsible for creating "segregated" neighborhoods when segregation was supposed to be illegal. At the time, the type of Black people in Detroit were not ones to fear since they came from solid family structures and were well-mannered. But with the 20 year cycle, the Black middle class left Detroit, following the path of White Flight due to the caliber of people coming into sections, especially when the houses were by then owned by outsiders who rented those houses out. This lack of home ownership destroyed the concept of civic pride. Once again, we can look to the actions of the Real Estate industry for this decline of the city. As I stated many years ago, Detroit will never really come back until it regains its tax base, which was founded on and employed population and industries all paying their fair share of taxes to support the public services needed. Once upon a time we had that. But with the pattern set by the Real Estate industry, it seems it shares in the demise of the city as well. As my father said, "No one will buy your house unless you put it up for sale."

    Grew up in Oakland County. My grandpa and his family were from Detroit but moved to Garden City. He still worked there, my dad spent time there and hence he was young. All I can say is there were plenty of good, decent, God fearing, tax paying black folks in Southfield and scattered about here and there when I was young and they didn’t want to live in Detroit either. We always look at things through a racial lens but I think lost white people weren’t making decisions based on race when people started migrating out, which started to gain steam in the 40s and took off after the riots, but it was already happening. Lots of new suburban homes were created and the factories had been moving out of the city limits for a long time. Slowly at first and then it really picked up but Detroit was Detroit because there were a ton of unskilled manufacturing jobs that paid well enough that people could afford to buy homes and a car. But the homes were located in the city near the factories and ancillary jobs. A lot of people when given the choice would prefer a brand new home in a place with low taxes, new streets, big backyards, and no factories around. That’s what started the migration. New roads, more cars, more opportunity to get a piece of the American dream brand new and still make it to work everyday. There was never enough housing in Detroit in its heyday so prices were actually probably artificially high in the city limits. Don’t always assume people make decisions based solely on race. I’m not saying that there weren’t people who didn’t see there neighbors move somewhere more pleasant and less industrial, and then see the neighborhoods start to change and think to themselves maybe it’s time to go. There were alot of people who had mortgages and couldn’t move. They only left when the crime made it unsafe for them to stay. And anyone who says that crime wasn’t a problem is flat out lying to you. Anyone who tells you there were groups of black folks, particularly younger black folks, who weren’t hostile to white people is also lying to you. That went both ways. That’s not to say that the majority of the black folk of Detroit were bad people were mean to their white neighbors, because that simply isn’t true. But whether it’s 10 or a 1000 people who wish you ill, it doesn’t matter. When you have kids you have to think of their safety. So for the latter white people leaving the city, it probably was flight. They were really trying to flee. The Detroit of my youth, the Detroit where the city burned every Devils night, with the awful schools and rampant drug crime, that is not a place most people would choose to live if they could avoid it. We went down there for tigers games, to the DIA, occasionally to the RenCen and that’s about it. I loved old tigers stadium, and we were part of an irish American club called the Gaelic League that was also in Corktown. I’ll always have love for that place. But Detroit was still a city where stop signs and red lights were more of a suggestion of after dark.

      @I wish I was a vampire in the late 80s & early 90s No, it would ruin black people to a primitive state and whites would hoard all the resources... Look at Jackson Mississippi. Look at every video you swear a "Dindu" didn't do what you thought they were supposed to. I say it's an educational difference, and a lack of understanding that we don't learn the same. In ways we're much more innovative than any set of people... I see a lot of withholding. We're tired of asking. We bout to start taking...

      @@ThinkerHaistTV The solution is voluntary, racial separation, not by government-powered segregation. Black Americans should work together and pool their resources to create their own jobs and institutions instead of relying on the whyte man's institutions. Also, they should create their own neighborhoods where they can be safe so that not a single fcking whyte Karen is going to fck with them again.

    Our family was no exception. We departed our Wyoming and Fenkell home during the middle of the riots. Our neighborhood was great. I had so many black aunties. They all had a pact; if you see my kid screwing off, let em have it. I went to school on DSR buses; Newton Elementary. All because of a few bad cops.

    Saying you moved to Sherwood Forest is not like saying you moved to Detroit. Moving to Delray would be saying you moved to Detroit, not some rich area full of mansions with private security patrols you liberal hypocrite.

      Well that is exactly what most white middle class are a bunch of spineless Karens that were too chickenshit to stand their ground and hang onto the neighborhoods. Nothing stupid about that only factual truth.

      Well let's look at the result. When all the productive manufacturer workers in tradesmen left the city the city infrastructure collapsed. Whoever was there after white flight occurred clearly didn't uphold the infrastructure.
