I was once a leader of men and I loved it. I lost a few, buried them, hugged and cried with their families.
But the day came when a young man step to me and said you’re too old for this mission. He was right and I knew it. I denied that fact for about 3 months until I realized I couldn’t keep up. My weapon system got heavier, my thoughts of slowing down the team wade on my mind always.
I feared retiring but I feared failing my team more. I knew this day would come so I decided my team is more important than my selfish pride. I don't think his closest advisors were being completly honest with him. I do understand they care about him and wouldn't of wanted to tell him that, this time, it's likely it couldn't be turned around. Having said that, this is one of the things Democrats should highlight as a fundamental difference between someone like Trump and a man like our President, Joe Biden. We all know it: There is ZERO chance Trump would have ever stepped down for the good of even his party much less the country. DJT cares about his own selfish desires, that's it. Dan Andrews (Vic), Mark McGowan (WA) and Annastacia Palaszczuk (Qld), all Labor premiers. They all steered their states through the most challenging Covid times, and they all potentially still had enough popular support to keep on winning (Andrews had just increased his electoral lead).
Something about passing the torch to a new generation can allow a sense of relief and release. They're making a public statement that it's not about the individual, it's about the ideas and the movement.
It's a real blessing in these times of the "cult of personality" for a leader to do as Biden has done. All around the world, people can feel the generosity of his actions, and the potential for renewal. The healing of a nation is far stronger than the ambitions of one person. People are living to much older ages than in the past so we need to start having term limits with age restrictions.
There's a contradiction in that. People aren't just aging into wrinkled drooling husks while not dying; those longer lifespans are due to better physical and mental health in any relative year. Longer lifespans are a reason to raise age limits, not lower or introduce them.
