How College Football Recruiting Works | The Recruiting Trail 001

  • This video breaks down how a college football staff is organized and how the evaluation process takes place. A lot of recruiting services/coaches just spam your highlight video out and call that "marketing". There should be a strategy in place to reach the right person! Getting in touch with your area coach that is responsible for your school is most important!

    Just FYI, this is one of your most viewed videos. There is a demand for in depth guides on the recruiting process. I would love to see how a recruiting board is built, and what each part of the board means for the recruits that are on it...For instance, who on that board is actually getting offered? What kind of correspondence from the recruiters are athletes likely to receive given their position on the board? Things like that, where we get inside info, is the content I'm here for.

    Coach thank you. I am trying to get my nephew recruited. He is 9th grade and comes from a broken home. My dad and step mom raise him. Learning to keep that hush and reaching out to coaches is new Information that I didn’t know. Thanks a ton.

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  2 года назад +1

      Thanks for the comment, wish your nephew the best! I don't know if I believe in keeping his situation hush. That's the reality, and if colleges pass on someone just because of where they come from, that's a problem. I woudn't want my kid or nephew playing for that program anyway. Now if his upbringing is causing him to act a certain way in school or struggle with grades, that's another story. The colleges aren't judging him on where he's coming from, but how he is currently performing and his character. A lot of people out there come from a broken home and have managed to overcome adversity better than those of us that grow up picture perfect. I believe that coaches know that, at least the good ones do. I wish you the best!

    I didn’t play much varsity my sophomore year of hs, and I didn’t even play my junior year because I was not even considering college. I played my senior year(this year), put in so much work before the season, bulking, lifting, using the cone and ladder, I thought I had the wide receiver spot locked, until I tore my quad in a 7 on 7. I’m back now and it’s obvious how much better I am strength wise and athletically than the guys in front of me but the coaches ignore me as if they forgot about me. I don’t know what to do I worked so hard and I know I can do it but my coaches almost don’t even care about me and that’s no exaggeration. Like the favoritism is awful, I mean terrible. A former teamate went to cyber schooling, and now plays for another team as a starting linebacker; at my school, he didnt get a single rep at a scrimmage, and walked off the field dropping his helmet lol. Last offensive practice I finally got reps, I had three straight catches, a screen, a vertical, and another vertical which I mossed the corner in the endzone, but they still put a lanky slow sophmore over me in game. It’s frustrating, I wanna play football, I don’t wanna give it up because I never got a fair shot in HS. what do i do?

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  5 лет назад +3

      If you have the invite and you want to go check out the school, you absolutely you should go. BUT, receiving an invite for a Junior day doesn’t mean the school is actively recruiting or there is a scholarship for you. You have to look at Junior Days more from the perspective that it is your chance to go see what a program has to offer. It gives you and your family a chance to see the facilities, hear from and meet some of the coaches, and learn about their academics. There will probably be ALOT of people invited. When I put together a Junior day, we had over 800 people attend (200 prospects and their families). There’s a chance you
      Might not even talk to a coach. As long as you’re ok with that, you should go and enjoy the day w your fam. If you’re low on money and it’s going to put your family in a tough spot, I wouldn’t waste the $$. If you do go, make sure you meet who you need to meet (area coach, position coach, head coach) let me know if I can answer anything else!!

    What’s my chances of getting a scholarship if I only played my senior year

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  3 года назад

      It all depends what your senior film looks like. Let's say you're a QB and you're the backup your Junior Year, but the starter is a big time player that is going to a Power 5 school. When it's your turn to play, you ball out. There are plenty of people that see that, and opportunities present themselves.
      Notre Dame just offered a Class of 2021 Athlete last week. His name is JoJo Johnson, from Merrilville HS in Indiana. It is November of his senior year, but he just got his biggest offer this past week and is now committed. Things can change at any given time!

    • @PlatformSportsLeague

I didn't have a D1 scholarship until late January of my senior year. Understandable, that was in the stone age, but just an example. Also, this COVID landscape has thrown the class of 2021 on their heads. A lot of kids are being missed because coaches weren't able to see them in person. Is it normal for a football program you never contacted to contact your high school admin directly requesting your transcript? What does this normal mean?

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  Год назад

      Yes. Each college football program is building their own database, and looking to enter as much info as they can about your athlete (Transcripts, highlight videos, influential people in their lives, etc.) In smaller programs, the coaches themselves are responsible for gathering that info. In larger programs, they have recruiting offices that are reaching out gathering that info to make it easier for their coaches to evaluate. Generally, a high school has a transcript release list, and you would have to put certain programs on that list in order for schools to release your transcripts. Other times, the high school coach simply makes copies and sends the transcripts out to those that ask. I hope this info helps!

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  4 года назад +2

      Great question! I don’t know of any D2 programs with a staff member only assigned to recruiting. Most schools, because of budget constraints, do not have the freedom to pay a salary for someone who is not coaching. At the FCS level, the programs with solid budgets have a specific Recruiting Coordinator, which is exactly what you are looking to do. Some FCS programs have a director of operations that might split responsibilities of Operations (team travel, meals, scheduling) and recruiting. Once you get the FBS, every program has at least one person, most of the time a full department, specifically responsible for scouting/recruiting. If you’ve never held such a role, my recommendation would be to connect with and network with coaches/recruiters and volunteer your time for free, if this is possible for you. You’d be surprised what opportunities volunteering can open for you!

    any advice for an 8th Grade prodigy coming out of a 2a high school?

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  3 года назад

      Well, if the 8th Grader is a Prodigy, that's a different scenario. I think the exposure will come naturally as they separate themself from their peers and show their talent as they go through their high school years. In that case, my focus would be more on developing their skillset, growing as a leader and teammate, as well as in the classroom. Regardless of how small your school is, if you truly are a prodigy/phenomenal athlete, you will be found.
      For a kid that is coming out of 8th grade and unsure where he stacks up, I would say that there is a TON of time. Be patient and learn the game of football. Don''t worry about freakin recruiting. College coaches can only focus on one, maybe two classes in the recruiting game. I can assure you they are not concerned with an 8th grader. Odds are they probably won't even be working at that school when it is time to actually recruit you.
      In terms of "Media Exposure" which is different from actual recruiting momentum, there are showcases in every state that you can go to and participate in to create a buzz around your name. Search for those locally around you and go compete against the best in your area!

      I did think that a lot of college programs would list the recruiting areas of each coach on their coaching staff website. However, there are only a small amount of schools that do that. My suggestion would be the following:
      1. Ask your varsity coach who comes to your school from that particular college to learn more about the prospects at your school. That would be your area coach right there!
      2. If your coach isn't sure, I would go to the college program's website, find their roster, click where it says "Coaching Staff" and find the Recruiting Coordinator. Every staff has one. Reach out to them and ask who covers your area (you should let them know what county your school is in as well). A little tip, it would increase the odds of them responding if you cc their boss, the head coach.
      Now, if you reach out to Alabama, don't expect a reply. Be realistic, start at smaller schools and work your way up.

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  4 года назад +1

      The first thing I would do is ask your High School Coach if he knows. Your Coach might already have that relationship. Ask him to reach out to the school and find that info if he doesn't know. Depending on the support you get from your head coach, you can go from there.
      So the tough part about this is that Colleges don't usually advertise which coaches are responsible for which areas. SOME STILL DO THOUGH. For example, at Princeton (Ivy League) if you look on the coaching staff profiles, they have their recruiting areas listed. goprincetontigers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/mike-willis/8436
      However, every college coaching staff should have a recruiting coordinator listed. If you find the email address for that individual, you can send him an email and ask who recruits your high school. You can literally do that for the 50-75-100 schools you're interested in. Don't discount the FCS, D2, D3 schools. You want to reach out to everyone and form the connection! Also, if you're not getting responses, reach back out to the recruiting coordinator, and add the head coach to the email (That always helps get a response).

      2. Ask your high school coach if he has the info on who the area coach is for those colleges.
      3. Go to the programs website and look at the coaching staff page. They might have the recruiting areas listed for each coach. If your area is listed, that’s your area coach. If areas are not listed, the best route to go would be to email the recruiting coordinator (most likely listed on the staff webpage as well) and ask who your area coach is. Also, a good tip for a higher response rate, CC the Head Coach on your email to the recruiting coordinator!

      Sorry I never saw this comment man! Colleges for sure look at frame! I played at Purdue and was always surprised at the high school linemen they brought in for visits. They were all over 6'5" but only weight 240-260. They were huge but lean, lanky. These kids showed up and put weight on, and the right way. Freshman Offensive Linemen can gain 30 pounds in their first year by just being a part of the program, and lifting the right way. Keep working man, and stay in that agility/speed ladder. Keep those feet right!

    Most College football websites don't list the "area" coach, they list position coaches and the recruiting coordinator, and some don't even list the recruiting coordinator. How does a prospect find out who their area coach is?

    • @JoshDub78
      @JoshDub78 5 лет назад +1

      What if a college doesn't have an area coach for the prospects area? Does that mean that school does not recruit that particular area?

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  5 лет назад +2

      Josh Dub I feel your pain on this one.
      1. If the website lists the recruiting coordinator, email him, and cc the head coach. Be genuine with your interest in the email and ask who your area coach is.
      2. If there is no recruiting coordinator listed, email the position coach and cc the head coach.
      EVERYONE RESPONDS WHEN YOU CC THEIR BOSS.

      Josh Dub yes, if you find out that the school does not have an area coach for your area, that means they do not actively recruit your area. That doesn’t mean that you don’t have a shot. If you show genuine interest and they like you, there is a chance. Most schools have spillover areas for each coach. For example, I might actively recruit the state of New Jersey, and I go on the road to visit all NJ schools, but I might also have Colorado as a secondary area. That means that if a kid from Colorado emails us, I’m suppose to reply.

      Josh Dub this is why I always recommend to work local and expand from there. If a college is in your state, they most def have a coach assigned to Your school, while if the school is across the country they might now. What state are you in?

    How do we locate the area coach for a college or university?

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  2 года назад

      It's tough because not a whole lot of school publicize this on their website. My steps would be:
      1. Ask your HS Coach who the area coach is. They should at least be in touch with your coach if they are recruiting the area.
      2. Reach out to the recruiting coordinator listed on the programs's website and ask. I have a video going through this situation on how to contact college coaches. ruclips.net/video/KoTj7TCzNGk/видео.html

      Why wouldn't it get a response? I'm here for it! Well, "Dwight Schrute" (top 5 tv characters of all time), what are you looking to do?
      1. Work for a University/College program in recruiting
      2. Work in NFL Scouting?
      3. Work for a Scouting Company evaluating HS Football talent?
      There are a lot of potential opportunities. Are you in HS, College, out of school? Did you play sports? We need more info here!

    I have very little film and have played minimal minutes so far in high school is there any chance I can be recruited at all in junior year if I start or is it too late

    • @chipw.8052
      @chipw.8052 4 года назад +2

      Jamal Jean your good for it. Junior year can be considered late but it’s ok in the long run. Ball out this off season to get a position on the field, junior into senior year, go to camps

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  4 года назад +1

      Jamal, you have plenty of time to be recruited! Colleges cannot even technically contact you until August 1 of your Junior year.
      There are tons of people who do not play their sophmore year. I was my brother's backup at QB and the long snapper! Do not stress about recruiting at this stage. Your number one priority is working throughout the offseason and earning a starting spot on your team. You need to be playing at your current level in order to play at the next level if that makes sense. Prioritize what is in front of you right now, and grind! Thanks for watching man.

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  4 года назад +1

      Thanks@@chipw.8052 ! I like what you said about getting a position on the field. That is obviously priority #1. Also, camps are defintiely the way to go in the summers. There are alot of money grabbing "Camps" out there that claim to give you exposure, but the most important ones to go to are the camps that the schools themselves host. Get in front of the actual position coaches and do work.

      This is honestly a weird reality for some football programs, I remember hearing that under Brett Bielema at Wisconsin, they only recruiting kids from 2 parent households. Something feels wrong about that, but it's not a lie.

    Okay dude what the hell are you talkin about area coach? There's really no such thing. You must be talking about a recruiting service. Which are 100% complete waste of time. I've asked three High School coaches have been around for many years and none of them know what the heck in area coach is. You don't talk to the area coach dude you talked to the head, assistant coach, or the recruiting coordinator

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  Год назад

      Right on man, thanks for the comment. Every college football coach in America has a specific area they are responsible for recruiting. I coached in college for 8 years, and I had area assignments for all of those 8 years. I worked with guys that recruited Dade County in florida for over 30 years. What high school coaches have you spoken with? Maybe we can check them out! Thanks again!

    • @PlatformSportsLeague
      @PlatformSportsLeague  Год назад

      Generally coaches might be responsible for a whole state (New Jersey, Indiana). Other times for bigger states, they’ll split it up by counties (Dade County in Florida, Polk County, etc.)
