A bit like Diane Abacus branding me a racist because I dared to vote Leave in the 2016 referendum. Do these left leaning individuals realise that if they keep on attempting to silence anyone who doesn't align that eventually everything with simply backfire. We saw it in 1989 when after 45 years the Berlin wall came down leading to the divorce of the Warsaw pact nations from the USSR and then the break up of the USSR itself.

In 1943, the following directive was issued from Party headquarters to all Communists in the United States. It read:
"When certain obstructionists become too irritating, label them after suitable buildups, as fascist or nazi or anti-semitic, and use the prestige of anti-fascist and tolerance organizations to discredit them. In the public mind constantly associate those who oppose us with those names which already have a bad smell. The association will, after enough repetition, become fact in the public mind.

On the question of how Liz Truss got so far in her career, there was an interesting article in Quillette a while ago arguing that she was basically an affirmative action hire. She got made an MP, got promoted and protected and made it into the cabinet and into ever more senior positions whenever the Tories felt they needed more women on display. And whenever she was criticised (as she was), she was able to get the media on side to present her as a modern, go-ahead woman being held back by stuffy Tory misogynists, rather than someone who was just out of her depth.

I think the later lines of this speech are just as valid as the former, in a world of globalisation...
"England, bound in with the triumphant sea
Whose rocky shore beats back the envious siege
Of watery Neptune, is now bound in with shame,
With inky blots and rotten parchment bonds:
That England, that was wont to conquer others,
Hath made a shameful conquest of itself."
Much of the damage done to England has been done by English politicians and bureaucrats conquering us from within and selling national assets to our enemies.

How incredibly strange that the PM of Brussels took so long to make clear that the mayors actions were both unconstitutional and unlawful. Similarly strange that no one in Belgium has suspended the mayor nor called for him to resign. But yet the people of Brussels would be the first to expect the British armed services to protect them under the current NATO charter which appears unfit for purpose where the EU are the ones with a history of hostile behaviour towards the U.K. whether it’s stealing covid vaccines, enabling boats to cross the channel, challenging British fishing rights or problems of the ECHR meddling in British domestic policy.

I am a non-smoker who believes that smoking anything is a disgusting habit. However, I will never support an outright smoking ban. We've already made most public spaces smoke free to protect me and other non-smokers from the dangers of second hand smoke. The government should not be able to prevent adults from purchasing tobacco products. What's next? Preventing people from buying fast food or sugary drinks? This creeping totalitarianism needs to be stopped in its tracks.

BTW would be better if the government had talked about drugs and alcohol. Children manage to get their hands on such and if they want cigarettes, they will just get an older child to buy them. Also opens up the black market. Sunak has absolutely no idea how most people live!

On smoking: the taxation collected on tobacco products more than covers any healthcare costs (unlike obesity which is tax 'free'). I also consider that the smoking ban in pubs was the original test to see how Draconian the govt could be without any serious pushback. Why, oh, why, didn't they just dictate that there would be smoking and non-smoking pubs and restaurants? It was the thin edge of the totalitarianism wedge we are now witnessing, imo.

The proposed smoking law will simply encourage those with an independent streak to confront the state and give it two fingers.
A new black market will develop.
The only argument with any weight is that many other consumer habits have been shown to be unhealthy and logically the same approach should be applied to them.
Suddenly we would find ourselves in a very strange place.
