Owning vast lands and palaces with residences five princely states pretty much became liability with new taxes like it was also for the nobility of the UK. Selling of palaces, villas, land, items including their jewelry, passing them to museums, and also abandoning their estates, turning them into hotels and museums to gain income just like in England. So it seems that weird that only the British get the blame when a Qutar national from royal House of Al Thani sells his own private collection. Nader Shah as Shah of Persia also sacked Delhi, and Agra.
Oh, the same thing happened with rich merchants both in Kolkata and New Deli all over India before and after WWII thanks to the economic downturn and taxes as they sold and abandoned their properties just to stay afloat.
