7-6-22 UPDATE: BILL 5 Premiere: ruclips.net/video/t7n7USUbq10/видео.html 5-9-22 UPDATE: WE'RE GOING BACK TO ARKANSAS - This Wednesday, May 11 (on Jo's Birthday), Bill's holding a memorial service for his dear Norma Jo. We'll be attending to support Bill, to deliver any gifts or donations we gather, and then to sit down with Bill and check in on his new life, now living alone. Obviously, it's been hard. So we want to be there for Bill during this time--and we want you to be there with us. So we're making a video to share and connect you all with Bill. In fact, he's been so grateful for the support, that he recently wrote me a letter saying the following to all of you: "Brandon, do something for me. Thank everyone on RUclips. That the Redneck said I love them. That they have helped me during this spot that I am in, and God bless everyone everywhere." We'll be collecting anything people would like us to take to Bill--be it a cash donation to his GoFundMe www.gofundme.com/f/tipping-arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks, a gift you'd like to offer, or just some words of support. Thanks for watching and caring, -Brandon *** 3-27-22 UPDATE: SAD NEWS, Early Friday morning, March 25, Jo passed away at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She and Bill were together 22 years. "Everywhere I look, she's right there," Bill said to me on the phone yesterday as he looked around their trailer. With all that is on his heart and mind, we're hoping to reduce finances as one of his concerns. We've started a special fundraiser to help Bill and to honor Jo: www.givemn.org/story/1gjawf Anything you can chip in goes a long way toward expenses associated with Jo's memorial service and with Bill's adjustment to life--now just him, their dogs, Newt and Scout, and their donkey, Gus. As seen in this video above, Bill was cared for by Jo this past fall and winter as he battled back from COVID and COPD. Now alone, Bill battles the grief of losing his partner. Thanks for watching and caring. We'll be sure to get back down to see Bill in the not-too-distant future. And in the near future, look for a tribute video to Norma Jo. -Brandon UPDATE: 12/5/21 - NEW ARKANSAS BILL! - ruclips.net/video/GS0JRfTZmXg/видео.html When we arrived to Bill's last month, he was gravely ill. But with the help of his friends, family, AND the support of all of you right here on this channel, Bill overcame his fears about going to the hospital. There, he would be diagnosed with COPD and COVID-19, slowly get better over the next month, and is now back home with his dogs, donkey, and ladyfriend, Jo. This episode isn't lighthearted like the previous three. It is, however, more revealing--and it coincides with The Periphery's mission to help those whose stories we share. Hope you can join tomorrow night as we premiere this powerful episode in the Arkansas Bill series, right here on The Periphery! Watch the trailer here: ruclips.net/video/SBVnVoC5Rz0/видео.html 11/18: It's Give to the Max Day. We're raising money to help Bill. Would you chip in? Click here: www.givemn.org/story/I6y60f This day is GiveMN.org's annual event raising money for Minnesota nonprofits. This year, The Periphery Foundation was selected to be a part for our mission sharing people's stories and helping with their lives. We're using this day to help Bill and Jo (and their dogs and donkey) following his recent hospitalization and their housing situation. Thanks so much for your support. This work helping Bill, Jo, and the many others whose stories we're yet to share is just getting started! 10/29/2021: BILL'S SICK, EVERYONE. We arrived earlier this month to find him bed-ridden and needing an ambulance. He was taken to a Fort Smith hospital and diagnosed with COPD and COVID. Today he's in quarantine and hanging in there. But he's got a ways to go. Meanwhile, his lady, Jo, is home trying to care for the animals and pay the bills. Our ongoing GoFundMe for Bill has been re-energized with people donating. Please add to it if you can: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks Also, we're still making a video about this visit--only now it's about Bill's road to better health and how these videos (and people's comments) are encouraging him to get better. We just released the trailer for this upcoming video. Watch here: ruclips.net/video/SBVnVoC5Rz0/видео.html 10/6/2021: ONE WEEK FROM TODAY, we're driving south down to Bill and Jo's home in Arkansas to film Bill #4! He's got an adventure lined up for the day for us, to record and share with you. Then, one month from now (or so), we'll hold the premiere of this new episode right here on The Periphery. We set up a GoFundMe for Bill and Jo, who'll get every dollar donated (after fees). Donate here: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks See you soon, Bill! 11/2/2020: UPDATED GoFundMe LINK: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks 8/7/20 UPDATE: DONATIONS TO BILL - After releasing Bill #3 ruclips.net/video/Dbk9MXFyXks/видео.html, viewers began to ask about ways to give a few bucks to Bill. So we now have the GoFundMe for Bill and Jo up and running. We tried this time to come up with a direct way for people to give to Bill, but he's pretty limited with technology. So this GoFundMe is the best way for now. Bill and Jo will receive every single dollar donated here. Thank you for your kind hearts. -Brandon 7/28/2020 UPDATE: OUT NOW - Arkansas Bill #3: A Day in the Life Watch here: ruclips.net/video/Dbk9MXFyXks/видео.html 7/3/2020 UPDATE: We finally did it! Last weekend, my filmmaking friend, Paul, and I visited Bill for the long-awaited third video. This time around, I spent half-a-day with Bill, who showed me a thing or two about life in the hills. Look for a preview of this video soon. And then later this month, look for the full-length Video #3 with Bill Jones, Arkansas Redneck. Thanks for your patience. *** 6/10/2020 UPDATE: I got a call Sunday from an unrecognized number. The voice on the other end, however, was quite familiar. Bill called. We arranged for the long-awaited Video #3. I'll be heading down there the end of this month! And more than just an interview, I'm going to spend half-a-day with him. A Day in the Life of Bill -- where he shows me his fishing spot, how he trains his dogs to catch raccoons, and other elements of his Arkansas life. Stay tuned. And like the previous video, I'm going to bring him donations. So if you'd like to offer a little something Bill's way, let me know by emailing me at brandon@theperiphery.com. Last time, in addition to the donations, we also had greeting cards and even Christmas cookies (it was a December visit:) *** 9/20/2019 UPDATE: My phone rang this morning. Still in bed, I looked at the screen to see an Arkansas number. I wondered... Yep, it was Bill. He'd gotten my letter and check from the donations in our latest GoFundMe campaign for him. ( www.gofundme.com/f/back-to-arkansas-bill-a-donation-and-new-video ) It wasn't much this time. Just $100 or so. But he certainly appreciates it. (And the window is always open if you'd like to send Bill a couple of bucks to thank him and his gal Jo for sharing themselves and their lives with us.) In fact, we are going to get to see Bill again:) Video #3 has been confirmed. During our call, he invited me down to his place to show us how he and Jo are doing. PLUS, this time he wants to take me around his place to show me what a day in the life of Bill is like. Fishing, hunting, trapping, dogs, and who know what else? We're planning the trip for later this fall. Because of this development, any further funds contributed to the GoFundMe linked above will hand-delivered to Bill. If you'd like to earmark the donation for a specific purchase, let me know and I'll get it for Bill--and deliver it personally this fall. I'll be in touch as we confirm the dates of the visit. Thanks for coming along! -Brandon *** 5/12/2019 UPDATE: IT'S ON. I've started another GoFundMe for Bill and am planning to make Video#3. Give a few dollars to Bill right here: www.gofundme.com/back-to-arkansas-bill-a-donation-and-new-video The comments on Bill's videos have never died down. His spirit is contagious--and the desire to lend him a helping hand persists since the days of my first visit and video a few years back. Since our second video in December 2017, it's been my hope to return for video #3. If this fundraiser can raise at least $500, I'll do so next month. Video #1 (above) introduced us to Bill. Video #2 (ruclips.net/video/s9l6QZIdunY/видео.html) followed-up with Bill, saw Bill's reaction to our gift of $575, and then surprised us with his girlfriend stepping up on camera: Video #3? My hope is to not just visit Bill, but to spend half-a-day with the guy to experience his day-to-day living. But first things first. All the money raised here will go directly to Bill. I will take none of it for myself. If we can raise $500, I'll deliver it myself and make Video #3. If it's less than $500, I'll simply mail him a check. We got four weeks to make this happen. I'm penciling in June 7 as my departure date. Thanks for your interest in Bill. He is continually impressed and touched by the support and concern of strangers. -Brandon *** 1/29/2019 UPDATE: For those asking, I did return last month to see Bill on my way to Houston for filming my documentary series on homelessness in America. Unfortunately, I only met Bill's barking dogs. So instead of a third follow-up (follow up video #2 is here ruclips.net/video/s9l6QZIdunY/видео.html&feature=youtu.be), I left Bill and Jo (his lady) a note wishing them well along with some $. I will stop by again when the time is right. Thanks for watching, and thanks for caring about Bill:) -Brandon
Plop The way I see it, he's touched/taught a lot of viewers by opening himself up for this interview. If, by doing so, he inspires people to want to give back, I think that's terrific. What harms and enables laziness is when people get something for nothing.

SPIRIT DOT how the fuck does that make him a nasty ass? You obviously don't live in the south dip shit. Ticks are bad here. I will take ticks in the south over all the libtards in California or whatever liberal state you live in anyday.
Wow ur being racist by calling him a racist cause he’s white and lives in the south. Fucking typical Yankee headass weaboo. Fuck you u soft libtard fuck
@@beaucaspar3990 i dont support the confederate flag but hes not flying it as a hate symbol. back in the day, the confedarate flag was all over the place as a sign of rebellion, not traitors and pro slavery idealisms. hes still an american and seems like a genuinely nice guy
I'm a Black man from South Florida, and I truly like and respect this guy. I grew up poor in South Georgia in the sixties and remember guys like him. They mind their business, don't bother anyone, and would share whatever they had with you. Some Southern Whites get a bad rap for all being prejudice against people of color... Yet I remember some of them marching along side us in the Civil rights movement in South Georgia. Some things you just never forget, and that's what I try to remind and instill in my grandkids when they ask questions about race relations today. I wish him well.
As a fellow Arkansan I can say this man puts up the right image for most of us, hell most southerners actually. We for the most part ain't racist. Nor do we try to offend anyone. We just wanna live life to the fullest with anyone and everyone we can
Im from Egypt .. i m waiting for covid to get away and i will visit america as soon as i can ! Can i visit Arkansas ? Do you think people would be okay with someone from Egypt staying in Arkansas for a few days or weeks ?
Most people here in the south live by some basic rules. Don't be a shit person. Mind your business. Be friendly and respectful. That's it really. Anyone wanna add something go ahead it's pretty much how I see people here.
pathstogodbyfaithcom states rights if you travel to the south like a have that is what they will tell you. The Civil War was not Slavery it was State rights vs Federal rights. Ex of ONE OF THESE RIGHTS: The confederates believed states should decide if they could keep slavery. Union believed National government should decide. The Confederates did not give up their lives so people could be in chains although it does seem that way, you have to think outside the box, the Confederates really fought for their freedom against what THEY BELIEVED was a tyrannical government. Sounds familiar? 1776.....
Being Mexican I see a lot of similarities between this gentlemen and Mexican farmers. Both hardworking and honest people. It's a shame how the media tries to divide us when in reality we're very similar. I came to the US at a young age and I am now a naturalized citizen of the US and I am damn proud of it. 🇺🇸
@Mohamed Redha Give it time buddy. Once them men in suits n' ties start taking control of Washington, Billy Yank has a gun to his head and Columbia is forced by Uncle Sam to **** Dixie again, you best bet that Lee and Jackson and Davis will come out of their graves and join our fight. Deo Vindice!
That "tons of money" is actually just welfare payments for corporations. Most of US foreign aid doesn't even leave American banks. It comes with strict conditions on how it's "spent" ..i.e. such and such stuff from such and such US companies. It's just another racket. Then the corporations whine about welfare mothers and socialism.
the problem is "sending money overseas" isn't to help people, it's to fund wars in other countries 99% of the time. the U.S government has more than enough money to help everyone in the country, they just choose not to
How come people complain about foreign aid but not ridiculous military spending? and people complain about people on welfare but don't give a shit when giant banks and airlines get bailed out? Seems to me they got us set up fighting eachother for scans while they keep their buddies in business with taxpayers money
We need less computers and bullcrap in our lives like this guy. I know a guy thats not quite this poor, but would spend all the time needed to help you , and he would never expect pay. but he would gladly take a 44 oz beer.
I agree with mostly everyone in the comment section in saying that this guy seems humble, but let's give some credit to the interviewer. He's able to ask good questions without antagonizing the man or displaying prejudice towards an American who sees differently from many others.
Absolutely! Very informative and non critical. Both men sound like really nice fellows whom I'd be proud to call friends. Thank you for posting this. I'm in New Zealand :-)
Yeah the interviewer did a pretty good job. Don't know if this is the only piece that came of it but if it is, the lack of dizzy spin and framing is pretty refreshing.
I was born and raised in Arkansas, still live here. Been here for 50 years. People like Bill are more common around here than most people think. I'll tell you something about Bill and all others around here like him. As little as he has, if you were in need he would give you the shirt off his back, dirty or not.
My greatgrand father is from waveland yell county n my grandmother from bennington Oklahoma they moved to California bay area in the50s had kids there kids had kids and mix breed of family wit white black mexican islander n so on if they were soo prejudice they would've stayed in the south and they were goooood people everyone loved them so i feel you brotha
Same as most poor people in Britain, too. More decency amongst many poor people than any number of wealthy people. With honourable exceptions of course.
Wow! The sob prefers a Confederate flag over the Stars and Bars and gets romanticized. Just know that not everyone has the luxury of chalking that up as a nonfactor in determining how good natured and whimsical he is. Ijs
The stereotypes and misconceptions I receive in my life because I am from Arkansas is staggering. To put it in perspective, I graduated in the top 5% of my class in a class of 384 people. I served 23 years in the military and retired honorably. I have 4 children, all from the same mother. I have a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. I have all my teeth, I've never been arrested. All my bills are paid. I've never done drugs, I don't drink. I speak three languages. I don't like NASCAR or Pro Wrestling. But I can also hunt and fish and camp until the cows come home. I can raise chickens, cattle, and other animals. I can grow my own vegetables in a garden. I can fix an engine, bail hay, ride a horse and a bull, ride a 4 wheeler, 3 wheeler and a motorcycle . I know how to skin a buck, go frog gigging and make moonshine or roll my own cigarettes. I have fought with wild insects, animals, men and terrorists. I know how to start a fire without a lighter. I was a boy scout, a soldier, a Non Commissioned Officer and an instructor. I've survived 130 degrees in the desert and -65 degrees in Northern Alaska. Survived a hurricane in GA, an F-4 tornado in Oklahoma, a small earthquake in Alaska, a rollover car accident, a house fire, a heart attack, numerous insurgent attacks in 4 combat tours, being accidentally shot in the foot by one of my own Soldiers in Iraq, skin cancer and now diabetes. I say all of this because it's important to know that all I have accomplished, and survived and allmy knowledge was garnered through the lessons taught to me, by two uneducated "rednecks" from Arkansas that happened to be my parents. They taught me to never be a victim and that you are not a product of your environment. People will always call me a "hick" "redneck", or "hillbilly", immediately followed by personal hygiene, education, racism, meth, confederate Civil War and incest jokes. Nobody from New York , Chicago, LA or other major cities gets roasted simply for being geographically challenged. I try to change the narrative but people are people. This guy lives a simple life and lives free to carry on that life the way he sees fit. He doesn't bother anyone and does what he has to do to live and care for his family. That's all anyone should ever have to do.
@@lifebybill1326 well I would still read it. Do you have a title for the book yet? And good for you that's awesome. I wish I had the patience to write a whole book. I could barely write essays in highschool though. Hope it's going well 👍
You forgot about Florida. Florida is hands down the worst state from all, it's like LA and NY combined, but somehow they are bigger assholes and dumb asses.
I respect the fact that the interviewer gave this man his respect and asked respectful questions in a respectful manner. That really showed maturity and understanding and i respect that. Thank you.
He’s speaks about the problems with our economy and the aid that goes over seas. Wiseman. We are all more alike than we think. Super nice guy, not bothering anyone. Great video, thanks for sharing.
@@alexchavez3244 Everywhere in the world you will find good and bad. To generalize an entire region in such a negative way is not only ignorant, but disrespectful. Then again ignorance and lack of respect are more prevalent than ever so I'm probably wasting my time with this comment.
I'll never forget that one picture where there's like 50 people crammed against the glass windows and door of a clothing store to look at some female celebrity with these psychotic expressions. So fucking stupid, I wonder how they'll feel about their celebrity fixation in 20 years. Wasting their lives tbh
I remember the good ole days when a Kardashian was just a race of reptilian alien villains. They joined the Dominion and stabbed their own neighbors in the back, you know. I guess it was profitable because now the despicable PsOS have a load of money and they own a Kanye too. You know? That clown who makes noises.

Same flag D Roof had when he shot and killed 9 Black people in a prayer meeting in church. He knew what it stands for. It pisses me off, I was in service for this U S. A in Vietnam, Trump and he did not,now that’s white privileging B S.
except for some reason he doesn't have an interest in even learning what the Confederate flag stands for. The meaning behind it... I don't understand how someone can fly a flag without knowing exactly what it is.
Such a wise and humble person. Not asking for a thing or blaming others, just living life like he wants...Hope he got some cigs and whatever else he needed!
Hi Chris, I just started a Go Fund Me page for Bill. We're helping him get his lights back on:) www.gofundme.com/turn-on-the-lights-for-bill-jones I'm hoping to head back to Arkansas and deliver the money in time for Christmas.
are you dumb? if you take into account the fact he has probably smoked most of his life, it would actually make somebody very ill to stop them straight away. So therefore he does probably need cigarettes and I hope he gets them too:-)
To be honest, it’s his body and his health. We can’t rant and rave about him smoking. He’s in charge of his own well-being. If he wants to smoke, let the man have a damn cigarette. Nonetheless he seems very humble. Hope he gets all the stuff he needs.
I appreciate the fact that , despite plenty of opportunity for you to do so, you NEVER got condescending during the interview. People live their lives in different ways. You don't have to like it, but you should respect it....
Thanks much, Dennis. I'm aware of how journalism has polarized along with the rest of the country. As someone who tries to avoid that tendency, I appreciate your comment.
Dennis McCaslin That's actually simpler and as it should be, more or less. Dude is a survivor, we could learn from him. Stronger than 80 percent of ordinary people.
@Littenz RL Barely any country? The vast majority of countries on earth have living conditions worse than what this guy has. You're probably a communist lmao go live in Cuba or Venezuela and come back to tell me if you really think capitalist America is all that bad.
Littenz RL, you seem mad, why so mad? You have no business with America. So why you complaining. It’s like people don’t know that we have are own oil fields. It’s like people don’t do some real research and just stick to the internet for information.
Hunter Herr it depends on how you define it cause it doesn't exist in some definitions. i've heard PhD professors say everything from "simply being white is your scholarship for college and a successful job" all the way to "whites are the majority so they get the privilege of having the skin color of the majority"..i'm sure you could come up with minority privileges if you wanted to use your brain
'Do you think some of that money should go to you?' I ain't askin' nobody for nothing if I can't get it on my own, and if you don't like the way I'm livin', you just leave this long-haired country boy alone.

I got the ending where Micah doesn’t kill Arthur tho and instead u just die watching the sunrise. I just watched the other one on RUclips and wow thank god I was honorable. Fuck micah 😂
I moved from Michigan to Arkansas and it was the best move I made. I was pleasantly surprised by the people, in an unexpected and great way. I go to the Ozark Mountains frequently and have not once encountered hostility. Just as black people are stereotyped, so too are the kind of people this man represents.
Kendall Cressler exactly what i was thinking. There are some places in the backwoods where they hate black people still. Not everywhere but some places is dangerous for blacks.
Kendall Cressler Eureka Springs area. It goes without saying that there are pockets of hatred but my point is that it is not the norm, from my experience.
I live in Arkansas too. Came from Western NY. A lot of good folks in Arkansas. When I first told people I was moving down here they would say stuff like "what are you crazy? Haven't you ever seen Deliverance?" Then again everybody thinks NYS is one big New York City. It isn't.
This guy is a local legend, lives in Waldron arkansas and till this day the place hasn’t changed much. Most people see his views and lifestyle as trashy and disrespectful. But I’m reality he’s just another down to earth human like the rest of us. Never met more genuine people
I can't stand people that think everyone else should live to their standards, as long as they are not bothering other people leave them alone. We have become a communist society where everyone wants codes and ordinances to control their neighbors. We are no longer a free people.
@@jerrylanglois7892 he could teach me how to to hunt, fish, weld tools, and even how to safely snub the tusks of a boar. But most importantly, that it's the simple things in life that matter.
It’s definitely his mantra, but he doesn’t understand that success is something that you create. You can wait for luck and decide to go ahead without it; that would make sense. It doesn’t really apply for success though. Makes it look like you just gave up, if you say something like this. Cool dude though for sure.
@@FIRTICH. i agree but success is really relative. After having some success in life living in a big city in Cali, a part of me thinks this guy was more successful than me. Running around like a rat in a maze trying to make money for all the material shit I thought I needed. Now I’m thinking the unibomber lifestyle might be better, minus the blowing people up. I travel the country for work and i see these beat up homes out in the most beautiful parts of the country. No neighbors in sight. I think, man they are poor and rich at the same time.
I know you are a troll but just for fun, he wouldn't accept a handout. He's living without power so the bill doesn't grow and he doesn't have to borrow from anyone. It's called rugged independence. When he gets his money saved up, he'll have his own power turned on. Some people are too strong for handouts, they are made of honor and not weakness.
Cletus Spuckler If he wanted handouts..I think he would have already applied for financial help from the government such as a check and food stamps. If a fellow neighbor or friend gives this guy 10 or 20 bucks that is not a handout. That is an act of kindness. And most people like this will get up a 3am in the morning to help you stop an overflowing toilet because that's just what friends and neighbors do.
I LOVE this guy, he said I'm living on $75.00 a week. So roughly $300.00 a month, how many people in big cities spend that much on Starbucks a month? He ain't asking for nothing, and doesn't seem to think anyone owes he. Just a GOOD OLD BOY.
Paul Monaco how can his 14 dogs live with 75 dollars a week,i have 3 dogs and that what they cost me in one week, feel pitty for those dogs...they must be starving
As a black man honestly I like this dude Only reason I mentioned the race thing was Bc of the Confederate Flag. Still a very sensitive topic for black folk whether you understand that or not.
He's saying that so the very narrow-minded PC Leftists can fry their brains in a tizzy from not being able to compute that a black man likes a "rAcIsT wHiTe SuPrEmAcIsT" Southern man and his lifestyle. To which I applaud you, sir! As a brown Filipino in Texas, I stand with you on this man's lifestyle. God bless humble and happy Southern folk!
I’ve been to the States several times. And ‘the South’ was easily the best part with the Best people. Black, White or Brown, you should be flying that flag. Be proud of your way of life and proud of your Southern culture. That’s all that, that flag means. Don’t buy into the brainwashing media hatred.
All this man wants is electricity in the future....that will be forever engraved into my mind and heart. We take everything for granted I was depressed just 10 minutes ago but after watching this I realize I have a pretty good life :)
I agree. I'm from ustate NY and I went to Greensville, NC for a wedding and some guy just randomly started talking to me and it threw me off. It's amazing how cool people can be when you leave the toilet of America called New York.

Country_guy 2021 Yea I'm black, and I know that most people whom fly the Confederate flag do so because they take pride in where they were born and raised. Never be ashamed of where you come from.
That nice to hear. I like all people the same. It' the extremist of every race, religion, sexual orientation that I have a problem with. It's rational people of every and any race that I would gladly sit down to dinner with and share my home.
What’s cool is I drove past this guy four times a month for 15 years and never thought he was a weirdo or anything, just figured he was poor and had some junk in his yard. I never thought someone would interview him.
Yeah nowadays literally every question is a loaded question. It’s never “what are your thoughts on white privilege?” It’s “what do you think about how white people get so many more advantages than minorities?”
Say what you want about this guy's living conditions, education, personal hygiene, or anything else, but this video just goes to show that sometimes people are just people. We're all cut from the same cloth, and I think right now we need a mass realization of that fact.
@Jo Cop Right, you just can't fix stupid... people who are so stupid, ignorant, deranged, delusional and gullible to not be able to see through the likes of trump. People like you ?
Really neat you stopped and talked to this guy. He lives up the road from me and I always like to drive by his place and see the new stuff he puts out. We are all simple like him down here. Nothing racist about it, we just like our flags and our woods. Good to see a neighbor.
I'm going to throw my two sense in this. The confederate flag is associated with racism is because it was the flag of the Confederacy, which rebelled against the United States over the issue of slavery. American slavery was based around race, particularly using black slaves from Africa (and the decedents of those original slaves). The Confederacy, represented by the Confederate Flag, was on the pro-slavery side. They lost the war, and the South was reincorporated into the Union. The Confederate Flag in modern contexts is used as a sign of Southern pride and showing support for a failed rebellion which sought to continue the enslavement of people based on their race. the "stars-and-bars" flag was used on the battlefield to identify the Confederate army (it was never "the flag of the Confederacy" in the way the Stars and Stripes is the US flag; they had a different flag design for that). However, until 1948, the flag was mostly used in contexts where it referred directly to Confederate soldiers: veterans' parades, funerals of veterans or their children, and so on. In 1948 the Dixiecrat wing of the Democratic party adopted the Confederate battle flag as their logo to use in symbol of resistance to the federal government, and then in the early 1950s, the KKK began using it at their rallies as a way to say, symbolically, "The South shall Rise Again, and then these n*s will know their place!" It is associated with racism because racists consciously adopted it and popularized it. Before the KKK took it as a symbol, you couldn't just randomly buy Confederate battle-flag merchandise all over. There were no flag belt buckles (even in Texas). No flag shot glasses. It wasn't even terribly easy to get your hands on a premade copy of the flag before that point, people were either using vintage artifacts or homemade ones. We have flag merch now because enough people in the 1950s wanted to say "Heck, yeah!" to the KKK's message of black extermination and white power that they created, and bought, and used, and wore, a million different items emblazoned with it. There are only two things the Confederate battle flag has ever been used to symbolize: remembering the Confederate army as a military group, and blatant anti-black genocidal racism. There are some who would argue that the first boils down to the second, in practice. At worst, a person who flies the Confederate flag is clearly racist when they're fully cognizant of the history it invokes in regards to civil rights, segregation, and the subjugation an entire race of people. At best, a person who flies the Confederate flag isn't racist because they're ignorant of the egregious history it represents and the precedent it puts forth. The Confederate flag was likely used and intended as a white supremacist symbol at its genesis. “As a people, we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race,” a Georgia newspaper explained in 1863. Birmingham commissioner Bull Connor urged whites to raise the confederate flag as Birmingham police doused African American protesters with fire hoses and attacked them with dogs. The Confederate flag was appropriated by the Ku Klux Klan and other hate groups for decades. Homespun and nostalgic arguments that invoke "heritage" and "tradition" just can't hold up against an endless stream of verifiable, historical facts. It's kind of a tough sell when "heritage" translates to heritage of race-based oppression and terrorism and "tradition" translates to race-based oppression and terrorism.

I hope you don't mind, but that is really interesting... Why is your profile picture the relations of Portugal and (Historically British) Guyana? I've never seen people in RUclips comments even recognise the existence of Guyana before lol Do you have connections to both Portugal and Guyana? My profile picture used to be the exact same pin but with the Ulster flag and the Danish flag.
JamesTavRule I'm Swedish so I don't know too much about the history of South America but I do know Guyana had a lot of Portuguese immigration (as well as immigration form Portuguese-speaking Brazil) after slavery ended around 1880
Just donated. I'm the narrator of the Bob and Nikki Audiobook Series, written by Jerry Boyd, and published by Podium Audio. Bill's accent helps me warm up for every day I narrate this series, and we are on Book #25! Hope he and the pups are doing ok.
7-6-22 UPDATE: BILL 5 Premiere: ruclips.net/video/t7n7USUbq10/видео.html
5-9-22 UPDATE: WE'RE GOING BACK TO ARKANSAS - This Wednesday, May 11 (on Jo's Birthday), Bill's holding a memorial service for his dear Norma Jo.
In fact, he's been so grateful for the support, that he recently wrote me a letter saying the following to all of you:
"Brandon, do something for me. Thank everyone on RUclips. That the Redneck said I love them. That they have helped me during this spot that I am in, and God bless everyone everywhere."
We'll be collecting anything people would like us to take to Bill--be it a cash donation to his GoFundMe www.gofundme.com/f/tipping-arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks, a gift you'd like to offer, or just some words of support.
Thanks for watching and caring,
-Brandon

3-27-22 UPDATE: SAD NEWS, Early Friday morning, March 25, Jo passed away at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

UPDATE: 12/5/21 - NEW ARKANSAS BILL! - ruclips.net/video/GS0JRfTZmXg/видео.html
When we arrived to Bill's last month, he was gravely ill.
Watch the trailer here: ruclips.net/video/SBVnVoC5Rz0/видео.html
11/18: It's Give to the Max Day. We're raising money to help Bill. Would you chip in? Click here: www.givemn.org/story/I6y60f
This day is GiveMN.org's annual event raising money for Minnesota nonprofits.
Please add to it if you can: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks
Also, we're still making a video about this visit--only now it's about Bill's road to better health and how these videos (and people's comments) are encouraging him to get better. We just released the trailer for this upcoming video. Watch here: ruclips.net/video/SBVnVoC5Rz0/видео.html
10/6/2021: ONE WEEK FROM TODAY, we're driving south down to Bill and Jo's home in Arkansas to film Bill #4! He's got an adventure lined up for the day for us, to record and share with you. Then, one month from now (or so), we'll hold the premiere of this new episode right here on The Periphery. We set up a GoFundMe for Bill and Jo, who'll get every dollar donated (after fees). Donate here: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks
See you soon, Bill!

8/7/20 UPDATE: DONATIONS TO BILL - After releasing Bill #3 ruclips.net/video/Dbk9MXFyXks/видео.html, viewers began to ask about ways to give a few bucks to Bill.
-Brandon
7/28/2020 UPDATE: OUT NOW - Arkansas Bill #3: A Day in the Life
Watch here: ruclips.net/video/Dbk9MXFyXks/видео.html
7/3/2020 UPDATE:
We finally did it!
***
6/10/2020 UPDATE:
I got a call Sunday from an unrecognized number.
Last time, in addition to the donations, we also had greeting cards and even Christmas cookies (it was a December visit:)
***
9/20/2019 UPDATE:
My phone rang this morning.
(And the window is always open if you'd like to send Bill a couple of bucks to thank him and his gal Jo for sharing themselves and their lives with us.)
In fact, we are going to get to see Bill again:)
Video #3 has been confirmed.
-Brandon

5/12/2019 UPDATE: IT'S ON. I've started another GoFundMe for Bill and am planning to make Video#3.
Give a few dollars to Bill right here: www.gofundme.com/back-to-arkansas-bill-a-donation-and-new-video
The comments on Bill's videos have never died down.
Video #2 (ruclips.net/video/s9l6QZIdunY/видео.html) followed-up with Bill, saw Bill's reaction to our gift of $575, and then surprised us with his girlfriend stepping up on camera:
Video #3? My hope is to not just visit Bill, but to spend half-a-day with the guy to experience his day-to-day living.
But first things first.
All the money raised here will go directly to Bill. I will take none of it for myself. If we can raise $500, I'll deliver it myself and make Video #3. If it's less than $500, I'll simply mail him a check. We got four weeks to make this happen. I'm penciling in June 7 as my departure date.
Thanks for your interest in Bill. He is continually impressed and touched by the support and concern of strangers.
-Brandon

1/29/2019 UPDATE: For those asking, I did return last month to see Bill on my way to Houston for filming my documentary series on homelessness in America. Thanks for watching, and thanks for caring about Bill:)
-Brandon
I love him
Plop The way I see it, he's touched/taught a lot of viewers by opening himself up for this interview. If, by doing so, he inspires people to want to give back, I think that's terrific.

@Mohamed Redha Gotcha. And America is doing okay for me. It's all just a joke. For now...
He is absolutely right that we need to quit sending tons of money overseas and use that money to help AMERICANS. Wise Man.

That's all anyone should ever have to do.

quomofo1 between Waldron an Mena. You can't miss it. That dirt out front is because they are putting in a power line. They may still be working on it.
So explain that to Bill
