    7-6-22 UPDATE: BILL 5 Premiere: ruclips.net/video/t7n7USUbq10/видео.html
5-9-22 UPDATE: WE'RE GOING BACK TO ARKANSAS - This Wednesday, May 11 (on Jo's Birthday), Bill's holding a memorial service for his dear Norma Jo. We'll be attending to support Bill, to deliver any gifts or donations we gather, and then to sit down with Bill and check in on his new life, now living alone.
Obviously, it's been hard. So we want to be there for Bill during this time--and we want you to be there with us. So we're making a video to share and connect you all with Bill. In fact, he's been so grateful for the support, that he recently wrote me a letter saying the following to all of you:
"Brandon, do something for me. Thank everyone on RUclips. That the Redneck said I love them. That they have helped me during this spot that I am in, and God bless everyone everywhere."
We'll be collecting anything people would like us to take to Bill--be it a cash donation to his GoFundMe www.gofundme.com/f/tipping-arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks, a gift you'd like to offer, or just some words of support.
    Thanks for watching and caring,
    -Brandon

3-27-22 UPDATE: SAD NEWS, Early Friday morning, March 25, Jo passed away at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
She and Bill were together 22 years.
"Everywhere I look, she's right there," Bill said to me on the phone yesterday as he looked around their trailer.
With all that is on his heart and mind, we're hoping to reduce finances as one of his concerns. We've started a special fundraiser to help Bill and to honor Jo: www.givemn.org/story/1gjawf Anything you can chip in goes a long way toward expenses associated with Jo's memorial service and with Bill's adjustment to life--now just him, their dogs, Newt and Scout, and their donkey, Gus.
As seen in this video above, Bill was cared for by Jo this past fall and winter as he battled back from COVID and COPD. Now alone, Bill battles the grief of losing his partner.
    Thanks for watching and caring.
We'll be sure to get back down to see Bill in the not-too-distant future. And in the near future, look for a tribute video to Norma Jo.

    UPDATE: 12/5/21 - NEW ARKANSAS BILL! - ruclips.net/video/GS0JRfTZmXg/видео.html
When we arrived to Bill's last month, he was gravely ill. But with the help of his friends, family, AND the support of all of you right here on this channel, Bill overcame his fears about going to the hospital. There, he would be diagnosed with COPD and COVID-19, slowly get better over the next month, and is now back home with his dogs, donkey, and ladyfriend, Jo.
This episode isn't lighthearted like the previous three. It is, however, more revealing--and it coincides with The Periphery's mission to help those whose stories we share.
Hope you can join tomorrow night as we premiere this powerful episode in the Arkansas Bill series, right here on The Periphery!
    Watch the trailer here: ruclips.net/video/SBVnVoC5Rz0/видео.html
11/18: It's Give to the Max Day. We're raising money to help Bill. Would you chip in? Click here: www.givemn.org/story/I6y60f
This day is GiveMN.org's annual event raising money for Minnesota nonprofits. This year, The Periphery Foundation was selected to be a part for our mission sharing people's stories and helping with their lives. We're using this day to help Bill and Jo (and their dogs and donkey) following his recent hospitalization and their housing situation.
Thanks so much for your support. This work helping Bill, Jo, and the many others whose stories we're yet to share is just getting started!
10/29/2021: BILL'S SICK, EVERYONE. We arrived earlier this month to find him bed-ridden and needing an ambulance. He was taken to a Fort Smith hospital and diagnosed with COPD and COVID. Today he's in quarantine and hanging in there. But he's got a ways to go. Meanwhile, his lady, Jo, is home trying to care for the animals and pay the bills.
Our ongoing GoFundMe for Bill has been re-energized with people donating. Please add to it if you can: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks
Also, we're still making a video about this visit--only now it's about Bill's road to better health and how these videos (and people's comments) are encouraging him to get better. We just released the trailer for this upcoming video. Watch here: ruclips.net/video/SBVnVoC5Rz0/видео.html
10/6/2021: ONE WEEK FROM TODAY, we're driving south down to Bill and Jo's home in Arkansas to film Bill #4! He's got an adventure lined up for the day for us, to record and share with you. Then, one month from now (or so), we'll hold the premiere of this new episode right here on The Periphery. We set up a GoFundMe for Bill and Jo, who'll get every dollar donated (after fees). Donate here: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks
    See you soon, Bill!
    11/2/2020: UPDATED GoFundMe LINK: www.gofundme.com/tipping--arkansas-bill-to-help-and-say-thanks
8/7/20 UPDATE: DONATIONS TO BILL - After releasing Bill #3 ruclips.net/video/Dbk9MXFyXks/видео.html, viewers began to ask about ways to give a few bucks to Bill. So we now have the GoFundMe for Bill and Jo up and running.
We tried this time to come up with a direct way for people to give to Bill, but he's pretty limited with technology. So this GoFundMe is the best way for now. Bill and Jo will receive every single dollar donated here.
Thank you for your kind hearts. -Brandon
7/28/2020 UPDATE: OUT NOW - Arkansas Bill #3: A Day in the Life
    Watch here: ruclips.net/video/Dbk9MXFyXks/видео.html
    7/3/2020 UPDATE:
We finally did it! Last weekend, my filmmaking friend, Paul, and I visited Bill for the long-awaited third video. This time around, I spent half-a-day with Bill, who showed me a thing or two about life in the hills. Look for a preview of this video soon. And then later this month, look for the full-length Video #3 with Bill Jones, Arkansas Redneck. Thanks for your patience.
    ***
    6/10/2020 UPDATE:
I got a call Sunday from an unrecognized number. The voice on the other end, however, was quite familiar. Bill called.
We arranged for the long-awaited Video #3. I'll be heading down there the end of this month! And more than just an interview, I'm going to spend half-a-day with him. A Day in the Life of Bill -- where he shows me his fishing spot, how he trains his dogs to catch raccoons, and other elements of his Arkansas life.
Stay tuned. And like the previous video, I'm going to bring him donations. So if you'd like to offer a little something Bill's way, let me know by emailing me at brandon@theperiphery.com. Last time, in addition to the donations, we also had greeting cards and even Christmas cookies (it was a December visit:)
    ***
    9/20/2019 UPDATE:
My phone rang this morning. Still in bed, I looked at the screen to see an Arkansas number. I wondered...
    Yep, it was Bill.
He'd gotten my letter and check from the donations in our latest GoFundMe campaign for him. ( www.gofundme.com/f/back-to-arkansas-bill-a-donation-and-new-video ) It wasn't much this time. Just $100 or so. But he certainly appreciates it. (And the window is always open if you'd like to send Bill a couple of bucks to thank him and his gal Jo for sharing themselves and their lives with us.)
In fact, we are going to get to see Bill again:)
    Video #3 has been confirmed.
During our call, he invited me down to his place to show us how he and Jo are doing. PLUS, this time he wants to take me around his place to show me what a day in the life of Bill is like. Fishing, hunting, trapping, dogs, and who know what else? We're planning the trip for later this fall.
Because of this development, any further funds contributed to the GoFundMe linked above will hand-delivered to Bill. If you'd like to earmark the donation for a specific purchase, let me know and I'll get it for Bill--and deliver it personally this fall.
I'll be in touch as we confirm the dates of the visit.
    Thanks for coming along!
    -Brandon

5/12/2019 UPDATE: IT'S ON. I've started another GoFundMe for Bill and am planning to make Video#3.
Give a few dollars to Bill right here: www.gofundme.com/back-to-arkansas-bill-a-donation-and-new-video
The comments on Bill's videos have never died down. His spirit is contagious--and the desire to lend him a helping hand persists since the days of my first visit and video a few years back. Since our second video in December 2017, it's been my hope to return for video #3. If this fundraiser can raise at least $500, I'll do so next month.
Video #1 (above) introduced us to Bill.
Video #2 (ruclips.net/video/s9l6QZIdunY/видео.html) followed-up with Bill, saw Bill's reaction to our gift of $575, and then surprised us with his girlfriend stepping up on camera:
Video #3? My hope is to not just visit Bill, but to spend half-a-day with the guy to experience his day-to-day living.
    But first things first.
All the money raised here will go directly to Bill. I will take none of it for myself. If we can raise $500, I'll deliver it myself and make Video #3. If it's less than $500, I'll simply mail him a check. We got four weeks to make this happen. I'm penciling in June 7 as my departure date.
Thanks for your interest in Bill. He is continually impressed and touched by the support and concern of strangers.
    -Brandon
    ***
1/29/2019 UPDATE: For those asking, I did return last month to see Bill on my way to Houston for filming my documentary series on homelessness in America. Unfortunately, I only met Bill's barking dogs. So instead of a third follow-up (follow up video #2 is here ruclips.net/video/s9l6QZIdunY/видео.html&feature=youtu.be), I left Bill and Jo (his lady) a note wishing them well along with some $. I will stop by again when the time is right. Thanks for watching, and thanks for caring about Bill:)

I'm a Black man from South Florida, and I truly like and respect this guy. I grew up poor in South Georgia in the sixties and remember guys like him. They mind their business, don't bother anyone, and would share whatever they had with you. Some Southern Whites get a bad rap for all being prejudice against people of color... Yet I remember some of them marching along side us in the Civil rights movement in South Georgia. Some things you just never forget, and that's what I try to remind and instill in my grandkids when they ask questions about race relations today. I wish him well.

Ex of ONE OF THESE RIGHTS: The confederates believed states should decide if they could keep slavery. Union believed National government should decide. The Confederates did not give up their lives so people could be in chains although it does seem that way, you have to think outside the box, the Confederates really fought for their freedom against what THEY BELIEVED was a tyrannical government. The stereotypes and misconceptions I receive in my life because I am from Arkansas is staggering. To put it in perspective, I graduated in the top 5% of my class in a class of 384 people. I served 23 years in the military and retired honorably. I have 4 children, all from the same mother. I have a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. I have all my teeth, I've never been arrested. All my bills are paid. I've never done drugs, I don't drink. I speak three languages. I don't like NASCAR or Pro Wrestling. But I can also hunt and fish and camp until the cows come home. I can raise chickens, cattle, and other animals. I can grow my own vegetables in a garden. I can fix an engine, bail hay, ride a horse and a bull, ride a 4 wheeler, 3 wheeler and a motorcycle . I know how to skin a buck, go frog gigging and make moonshine or roll my own cigarettes. I have fought with wild insects, animals, men and terrorists. I know how to start a fire without a lighter. I was a boy scout, a soldier, a Non Commissioned Officer and an instructor. I've survived 130 degrees in the desert and -65 degrees in Northern Alaska. Survived a hurricane in GA, an F-4 tornado in Oklahoma, a small earthquake in Alaska, a rollover car accident, a house fire, a heart attack, numerous insurgent attacks in 4 combat tours, being accidentally shot in the foot by one of my own Soldiers in Iraq, skin cancer and now diabetes.
I say all of this because it's important to know that all I have accomplished, and survived and allmy knowledge was garnered through the lessons taught to me, by two uneducated "rednecks" from Arkansas that happened to be my parents. They taught me to never be a victim and that you are not a product of your environment. People will always call me a "hick" "redneck", or "hillbilly", immediately followed by personal hygiene, education, racism, meth, confederate Civil War and incest jokes. Nobody from New York , Chicago, LA or other major cities gets roasted simply for being geographically challenged. I try to change the narrative but people are people. This guy lives a simple life and lives free to carry on that life the way he sees fit. He doesn't bother anyone and does what he has to do to live and care for his family. That's all anyone should ever have to do.

It's called rugged independence. When he gets his money saved up, he'll have his own power turned on. Some people are too strong for handouts, they are made of honor and not weakness.

Cletus Spuckler If he wanted handouts..I think he would have already applied for financial help from the government such as a check and food stamps.
If a fellow neighbor or friend gives this guy 10 or 20 bucks that is not a handout. That is an act of kindness. And most people like this will get up a 3am in the morning to help you stop an overflowing toilet because that's just what friends and neighbors do.

It’s definitely his mantra, but he doesn’t understand that success is something that you create. You can wait for luck and decide to go ahead without it; that would make sense. It doesn’t really apply for success though. Makes it look like you just gave up, if you say something like this. Cool dude though for sure.

@@FIRTICH. i agree but success is really relative. After having some success in life living in a big city in Cali, a part of me thinks this guy was more successful than me. Running around like a rat in a maze trying to make money for all the material shit I thought I needed. Now I’m thinking the unibomber lifestyle might be better, minus the blowing people up. I travel the country for work and i see these beat up homes out in the most beautiful parts of the country. No neighbors in sight. I think, man they are poor and rich at the same time.

I moved from Michigan to Arkansas and it was the best move I made. I was pleasantly surprised by the people, in an unexpected and great way. I go to the Ozark Mountains frequently and have not once encountered hostility. Just as black people are stereotyped, so too are the kind of people this man represents.

I live in Arkansas too. Came from Western NY. A lot of good folks in Arkansas. When I first told people I was moving down here they would say stuff like "what are you crazy? Haven't you ever seen Deliverance?" Then again everybody thinks NYS is one big New York City. It isn't.

People, usually the young and well-intentioned, seem to think people like this are part of the “problem.” This man flys the Confederate and uses outdated racial terms, but he literally lives off the grid in Appalachia.
He lives in poverty- doesn’t he is suffering- so he has no power over the system. Many have turned to hate in these circumstances, but this man’s unfiltered opinions show a good person.
