That’s Lincoln Riley’s system. 99.5% of snaps are going to be either from shotgun or occasionally the pistol. Just something Caleb was rarely ever asked to do was play under center. It’s that way with many college QB’s anymore. To me, I believe Caleb has most all of the traits needed to be a special QB. He has all the skills that cannot be coached, and should get more refined as time goes by. Plus, he’ll have D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen to throw to next season, which should help.

Caleb reminds me Favre. You always knew Farve would throw 2-3 interceptable balls a game. And even if you caught them all, he might still pull off a miracle in the 4th quarter.
He hardly threw any interceptions in college. Favre wasn't a particularly intelligent player. Williams impresses as very bright, with a high capacity to learn.
@@dylankrejci9965 Caleb moves great in the pocket, but he also takes forever (like Justin) to throw after the ball is snapped. A lot of these crazy plays only happen because of that issue, and he's forced to escape the pocket or move around more than he should be, almost skittishly. I love that he keeps his eyes downfield though when that happens, something that Justin had trouble doing until this last year. But yeah, with Caleb, you can see his strengths and his weaknesses all in the same play.
Excellent A+ Breakdown. I do think people often put too lofty of a baseline for what NFL success is on these college QBs, but this was excellent stuff. Like right now the 12th best QB in the NFL overall has a LOT of flaws to their game; let alone someone whose closer to 20th like a Baker Mayfield or even Russell Wilson at this point. The criticisms of Caleb taking the easy play are fair but what is interesting is most of his criticisms are things that Bo Nix absolutely excels at; yet people hate Bo lol or at least they hate the idea of him as a 1st rounder (weird but okay). Being good in the quick game and short game has a LOT to do with presnap reads and confidence. Caleb lacks zero confidence and will be starting a lot of games so I am confident he will progress in that area. End of the day it is easier, far easier, to tone down a guy's big game hunting than it is to turn a check down artist into one.
A slower Lamar Jackson with a better arm. His lateral agility behind the line of scrimmage is the best I have seen ever. Probably better than Lamar. Lamar is faster though. This guy is good.
I think his problems are also a product of his team. The O-Line was terrible and u can't tell me the defense giving up 35 ppg isn't on his mind when he tries to make these superman plays. It seemed like he never got to play a regular game. I think some of his flaws you have to live with it. Can he have bad footwork and miss off platform? Sure, but i'll take that every so often because of the throws he MAKES when throwing off platform and from these crazy angles. Super talented, physically gifted, SPECIAL playmaker. Accurate. Shown flashes to read defenses. Great Pocket movement. Chicago would be dumb to not take him #1
I also don't think USC is very talented and i don't really like their offense. It feels like caleb or bust. The offense never really felt like it had flow. RPO, screen, Quick Game, with the occasional NFL concept, and "Caleb work your magic" It works against the less talented teams, but against the better teams, USC would get outmatched. Again, it felt like Caleb never really got to play a real college
Guys potential is sky high, just hopes he's able to improve on his weaknesses once he's in the league. It was encouraging seeing him play more in structure in the second half of the season, especially after the Norte Dame game since that was one of my biggest criticisms of Caleb. Just hope he keeps getting better.
Honestly fantastic analysis. Slight disagreement with the anticipation aspect. He has quite a few plus anticipatory throws but i understand where you're coming from. My argument for why he didnt have more is this draft. He really didn't have much talent around him and his defensive talent was even worse. I'll also add that DJ Moore has come out multiple times saying he's surprised by Caleb's Anticipation. He wasnt trying to hate on Justin, (who he voted for to stay,) he was honestly surprised the ball was arriving that quick from Caleb.
Send me the anticipatory throws please - because I've watched every game from 23 and I couldn't find barely any He had plenty of talent round him for a college QB, many have played with worse

I think you undersell the pressure he seems to be constantly under. Of course he's not going to have textbook drops or mechanics when he's constantly running for his life.
Which is more of a reason why he isn't worthy of first overall. He doesn't play in rhythm. You think NFL pressure is going to be any easier? Pressure is a lot worse in the NFL dude.
@@DaBaltimoron Which is why he is going to be a bust. Dude played in a terrible o-line and still hasn't learn to play in rhythm and anticipation. If you have a bad o-line than playing in rhythm is that much more important.

Hate to bring up fields but this is exactly what he doesn’t do, the pocket awareness on Caleb is top tier. Fields would just sit and let the guy sack him because it was either that or run, Caleb shows the pocket awareness but wants to throw after using the angles to create another pocket. The bears online has not been barely improved. It was dead last year. Waldron uses a lot of pre motion schemes. He will need to greatly simply for Caleb. Pro is so much more complex than Lincoln Riley’s bs. He just let Caleb go out there and wing it, he can’t do 75% of what he did in college when he comes to pros. @@theman211294 u gotta look at it from a different POV. as a bears fan our franchise is POVERTY, never had a 4k yard QB and granted fields never did that too, but as a OSU and bears fan he brought the franchise hope, life, energy, relevancy again for the bears, the situation around him was fucked up and every knew it but at the end of the day he came in with class and tried his hardest to ball out, his highlights in his career were amazing and i was grateful to watch his last game in solider field in person. u can nitpick stats all u want to say “he can’t throw” but it just not true….the man is a baller and it WILL show in pittsburgh i will forever be a fields fan not only because his electric play but because of the person he is too, great human u would want in ur locker room and a great leader and i truly believe he would take us to the playoffs with the new bears team this year
@@theman211294 and I don't understand thinking an overrated college qb with the same flaws as JF will do better with the bears!!
The Bears will fuck it up!! The Bears have proven nothing in almost a hundred years. I feel bad for Caleb because he is going to a shit franchise that is notorious for destroying promising qbs if I am wrong please prove me wrong!!
@@Spark.G85 can’t prove you wrong until he plays but he has two no. 1 receivers, a top 10 tight end, an improving offensive line with continuity, and an OC that turned geno smith’s career around. He’s walking into a great situation. Poles built a great offense so if he fails it’s on him not the bears for once.
This kid is gonna be so good. I don't care about the criticisms, every prospect gets them. He is special, don't say no one warned you when he's one of the best qbs in the league in his first couple years
He lost a few big games. He was legendary going against mid defenses. He won’t be bad but to assume he is gonna come in and be an instant success is irresponsible. This is a Mel Kiper esque take
@@geezyeskabante Fair take. He has so many traits you can't teach though. He's raw for sure. I think Wash. and re-uniting w/Kingsbury would be his best fit.

What a fantastic video, highlighting his strengths and weaknesses. Best breakdown I've seen of him yet. Big props
Thinking Football college video lets go!!! Need a Maye video from you asap
Looks like every snap he took is in shotgun. We need to see what he looks like reading a defense and making decisions behind the center. Even see him hand the ball off in I formation.
I'm no football expert but based upon this and the other Thinking Football video I just watched (Rome Odunze), this is a high quality analytical channel. Both incisive deep dives. Very well done!
As a Bears fan, the great divide between us is of those who watch college film, and those who just watch Bears games. Those who watch film always want Caleb. Especially compared to Fields’ final season of college, Caleb’s arm and creativity are clearly brilliant.
I don't even want fields but this is just a dumb comment by an armchair QB who thinks he's a football expert. 98% of the people in both camps don't watch film.
@@majripple the funniest trend in the last couple years is average dudes throwing around the word “film.” maybe this guy really is “watching film” but it seems most people just watch a couple videos like this and maybe catch a few college games and then go around acting like they’re nfl scout lol
As a Lions fan I can guarantee you we want yall to take Caleb. What you could do with Fields and the draft capitol from trading out of the pick would be ridiculous. Possibly another top 5 selection next year. If. You take Caleb and he's a bust or just average, then you're basically the Jags. Not bad but not amazing, and not getting a top 10 pick
@@wlnlax14as a bear fan I agree with you, we have a chance to make a nfl roster that might even make Blain Gabbert look ok. Shopping the #1 pick could make bears pieces great for years. Instead we will draft Williams which will demand a contract in year 3 and cap strap bears for years with mediocre surrounding cast.
@davidcarr2689 exactly. To quote our GM... "It's a hell of a lot easier to get worse at QB in this league than to get better". Good luck my friend, still hoping yall trade Fields 😆
Great video man, thanks. Appreciate all the hard work that went into this one.
I run my own channel and this is hands down the best analysis I've watched on Caleb Williams.

Caleb is a playmaker. Looking forward to what he can do in the NFL
Something that no one talks about is how good Caleb is at setting up blocks for himself!! I am a Bears fan and I had the pleasure of witnessing the greatest of all time at setting up blockers Devin Hester but watching Caleb I see a lot of the same magic. Watching it in slow motion it seems obvious and simple but at full speed you realize these special players can slow the game down and do the impossible for the rest of us!!
Wow! Just found this channel and amazing breakdown! Thanks I know how much work this takes
Its gonna be a lot of Josh Allen where he has a tendecy to do too much which is why i think the bears are trying to prep for this with moves like Swift and Allen. A cowbell back and a reliable 3rd down target
As a packer fan, we’re so fucked
DAAAAA BEARSSSS
This dude is going to be very good sadly
it seems like the only people who dont understand how much better this guy is than Justin Fields, and how good of a position their team is actually in, are Bears fans 😂
CW is on an entirely different level to Fields, and the difference in their ceiling is enormous. If Caleb is even 70% as good as people expect him to be, he will still be significantly better than Justin Fields.
DJ Moore AND Keenan Allen?! 👀👀
😂
Caleb goes through his progressions, keeps his eyes up, lightning fast release, throws to receivers off the break, and his accuracy is lethal.
CW reminds me of a young Aaron Rodgers
His game reminds of the original gb qb, the original off schedule qb Brett Favre. Someone mentioned Donovan mcnabb and I kind of see that too
CW said he was his favorite QB growing up.
Reminds me Kyler Murray/johnny Manziel
@@RyanReacts4Ever yup
@@adnsmusic3842 i get the scrambling but the way college evolved since them thats just natural a lot of guys go off script especially since you named 2 guys who are from this system. Lincoln and Kliff both were under Leach at one point and Johnny had Kliff as OC, and Kyler was literally with Lincoln. Thats just the system, but Johnnys arm talent and accuracy are nowhere near Caleb, Johnny had Mike and just quick feet to scramble. Caleb isnt a great athlete but he has elite arm talent that with just enough mobility can still make a big play, id say Rodgers is his best comp for how good he could be.
Welcome to the bears 🐻

Caleb reminds me Favre. You always knew Farve would throw 2-3 interceptable balls a game. And even if you caught them all, he might still pull off a miracle in the 4th quarter.
He hardly threw any interceptions in college. Favre wasn't a particularly intelligent player. Williams impresses as very bright, with a high capacity to learn.
@@loubest37yeah, I really love the pocket awareness and pace of going through his reads. You can tell he really understands the game.
@@loubest37 hardly played any comp in college either so that’s hard to argue
@@dylankrejci9965 Caleb moves great in the pocket, but he also takes forever (like Justin) to throw after the ball is snapped. A lot of these crazy plays only happen because of that issue, and he's forced to escape the pocket or move around more than he should be, almost skittishly. I love that he keeps his eyes downfield though when that happens, something that Justin had trouble doing until this last year. But yeah, with Caleb, you can see his strengths and his weaknesses all in the same play.
CW reminds me of Aaron Rodgers
Now this was a great break down on Caleb.
I wish i had a voice like this 😅
A slower Lamar Jackson with a better arm. His lateral agility behind the line of scrimmage is the best I have seen ever. Probably better than Lamar. Lamar is faster though. This guy is good.
This was excellent! Please do breakdowns of Drake May, JJ McCarthy, etc.
JJ will be the shortest video ever lol. No one needs to see that.
@@Rosepapihe still threw 300 passes this year so there is plenty of film to be broken down on JJ McCarthy.
His footwork for the most part is pretty good. He doesn’t heel click very often
Been needing to see this
Honestly fantastic analysis.
Send me the anticipatory throws please - because I've watched every game from 23 and I couldn't find barely any
He had plenty of talent round him for a college QB, many have played with worse
The bears are going to be so good this year. FINALLY. I was disappointed about fields getting traded. But now that i know this is what we’re getting, and the team hes going to step into…. Im SUPER excited BEAR DOWN BABY 🏆

I think you undersell the pressure he seems to be constantly under. Of course he's not going to have textbook drops or mechanics when he's constantly running for his life.
That's why you stay in the pocket so the throws are on time and the receivers can run their routes as planned. May not be so easy in the pros.
@@stevenvox6549what pocket
Which is more of a reason why he isn't worthy of first overall. He doesn't play in rhythm. You think NFL pressure is going to be any easier? Pressure is a lot worse in the NFL dude.

He’s going to be a great Bear
Hate to bring up fields but this is exactly what he doesn’t do, the pocket awareness on Caleb is top tier. Fields would just sit and let the guy sack him because it was either that or run, Caleb shows the pocket awareness but wants to throw after using the angles to create another pocket. This guy looks super legit.

He will have a bad to below average line that won’t give him more than 3 seconds. If he’s running, he’s dead in the nfl. He could be really injured early in season.
