Im old enough to remember this album coming out , compact discs coming out and being jealous of a friend who had all the cds whilst I only had vinyl copies , computers coming out and how laughable they were compared to now . Its weird thinking Im 51 and Ive seen the CD , Computer and mobile phone invented yet now its just taken for granted . The synth thing was brought in by Roger around the time of The Game album after he used them on his Fun in Space solo album . Brian wasnt a fan but learnt to embrace them
As someone else has suggested Gimme The Prize is worth checking out and AGAIN Im putting forward Cyborg from Brians solo work . Both Queen sound at their rock hardest
Queen was never anti-synth. They had to put on 'no synthesisers' note just because many people thought that the band used them, when there only were real instruments until 1980. I guess Brian experimented with the guitar sounds too much :) But in 1980, they said that synthesiser became more usable. Just listen to the Flash Gordon soundtrack, where they play a lot with the technology. Freddie's solo stuff uses even more of it, which to my taste is too much.
Most definitely in my top five Queen songs David. Mr Taylor's influence shining through ! Once again it would not be out of place on a Roger Taylor solo album. Roger used to get so frustrated that so much of his songs were rejected ! Famously Queen did not use synths on all the albums right up to The Game it states NO SYNTHS as they were accused of using them, so they put they did not, The Game was the 1st album they used them on (an oberhime obx) and they then only used the synths as a tool to layer the music and to replace. You still have lots and lots to listen to if you want some rocking tracks Ogre Battle and Sheer Heart Attack (where Queen out punk punk)
Basically a war between machines and humans - with humanity just winning out. Too much emphasis on machines and technology in everyday life. Sounds very true!
YESSSS DAVID - Been listening to this song a lot lately. Personally, I think we need to be careful not to let devices (“Machines”) take over our free will.🤖“Narratively, the song can’t seem decide if it’s describing an apocalyptic vision of the future, or of the present, or a utopian one of either. It might just be paranoia, predictions of being replaced by robots or drowning in computer devices” comment by Ava Fox. Funny to hear this song and it's lyrics. Freddie did say that computers and machines would take away the magic of music..as in making music for you rather than the band using their instruments and brains... computers will do it all for you. And in a sense, Freddie was right. Instruments would be used much less.. Freddie said that was the fun and magic of making music and songs using instruments. So I wonder if this song hits on that!!
Yeah, he said music will eventually lose it's soul and unfortunately that's exactly what's happened. These days you don't get alot of bands that are just 4 people or whatever, playing their instruments live and raw, that's well gone out the window now
@davebain1982 I totally agree. Singers today in concerts spend most of it either singing to their own playbacks..or miming. So much autotune that when they so sing live, they can't sing to the standard of their studio recording. Queen sounded fabulous live, and yes, sometimes Freddie's voice faltered..but that's only human. No one is truly perfect 100% of the time.
