I enjoy your reviews and style of review. Also, on this topic, a perfect item for me to suggest to my (grown) kids for Christmas. Been wanting a variable ND for a while. Thanks.
Thanks a lot, Eric. Let me know how these work for you should you pick one up over Christmas :)
Thanks! Been looking about this cheap filter
Great review, thanks for that. However, I noticed that you not only changed the aperture, but also the ISO (100 to 400) between the filters and would also have liked to see a direct comparison of the two/three ND filters at 3 stops.
I own a K&F 2-32 CPL myself and I am very satisfied - so far.
Hi Nick, could you explain your point about the ISO and aperture a bit more?
@Adam Welch : I just noticed the change and wondered if the higher ISO had any effect on the images (e.g. sharpness).
To see the K&F 2-32, K&F 8-128 and your breakthrough filter side by side could have given a good impression of sharpness, color shift and vignette.
@@nickmoose4143 Sorry for the late response, I'm apparently behind on my comments. At around 13:25 there is a brief comparison between the Breakthrough 3-stop and 6-stop. As for the ISO, the difference between 100 ISO and 400 ISO isn't something that (in my opinion of course) would heavily impact the sharpness at least with the 5D MK3 I was using.
If I'm shooting video with wide f2.8. do you recommend the 5 stop nd filter or the 3 - 7 stop filter?
If you're consistently shooting at that wide of an aperture I would go with the 3-7 stop. The reason being that you would have more flexibility given varying lighting conditions, as in you can always dial up the ISO to compensate if 3-stops is too dark or potentially apply additional filtration should 7-stops not offer enough compensation.
How to minimise the x effect of variable nd filter
I didn't experience any of the 'X' with these filters. However, the 'X' effect, as far as I know, is inherent to the filter itself. So, the filter will either present the problem or it won't. Of course, stacking variable ND filters with other filters might make the issue more pronounced. I hope this helps.
Great review...i hav both
Thanks for this review, Adam. I have been considering the purchase of a variable ND, but haven’t been able to justify the cost of the PolarPro Peter McKinnon set, which has great reviews. I may start with these and see how far the get me.
I've looked at the PolarPro as well, Bob. But like you, they're just a bit too costly at the moment. These were the second variable ND filters I've tested and they are much improved over the last one. I think I still have the mindset that and "all in one" filter (and lenses for that matter) would be of inferior quality when compared to a dedicated filter. Time's change I suppose.
when you put a nd filter on, is it recommended to increase the aperture?
Hi Taran, I want to make sure I understand your question. When you say "increase th aperture" are you referring to making the aperture larger (smaller F number) or increasing the F number (smaller aperture)? Just wanting to make sure 😊
@@AdamWelch yes
@@taranagnew436 Well I'm not unfortunately still not certain which you mean but I'll assume you are asking whether you should open up the aperture (smaller F number) and that will just depend on the lighting. Generally filters like these are used to compensate for lighting conditions which are too bright so that a certain exposure, which would otherwise overexpose the image or video, can be used. If you widen your aperture you would essentially be defeating the purpose of the filter in most cases. That being said, the same is essentially true for the closing of the aperture, just for the opposite reason, if that's what you meant. I'll also add that the more open your aperture becomes the more probably you will introduce vignetting when using circular filters. I hope this answers your question but let me know if I've still misunderstood what your asking.
You've got something in your teeth. I'm surprised you didn't notice.
Do you mean I have something "between" my teeth or that I have something "in" my teeth?
I used a test image for comparison of your K&F filter being on the lens and off the lens. First test was without your filter to make sure I was getting a sharp image also tried it with multiple lenses to make sure I did not have a problem with getting a sharp image with any of the lenses. All the images with the Two lenses I used were perfectly sharp without your filter. I then use your filter on the lenses using the same settings and got terrible results. The image was completely unusable blurry after installing the filter. Also the color shift was not acceptable. The lenses I used were of high quality Canon L glass series lenses.
Hi Paul, I notice you repeatedly call these "your" filters. This is inaccurate. I want to make it clear that I am an independent reviewer, not involved or compensated by K&F Concept. That being said, all I have to go on were the multiple test images I made, like you, with and without the filter attached. Do you have a link where can all view the images from your tests? Also, you mentioned that you used the same settings both with and without the filter. As these are ND filters, using the same settings would result in a grossly underexposed photo once the filter was attached.
@@AdamWelch I have seen the above comment posted on several K&F reviews almost word for word, under differ user account names. I think a competitor is trolling and trying to give a bad impression of these filters!
@@usmanmajid7837 You're likely correct. The joys of RUclips, right??? Thanks for the heads up.
