Paper was the Anthracite coal of New Hampshire. A sad void was left in its wake when the industry packed up and left. Great segment and view into history.
I lived in Boston from 1995 to 2010, and tried to get up to New Hampshire as often as I could, especially to the sparsely-populated northern and western regions. I have lived in Texas since 2010 and I don't miss Massachusetts at all. But how I miss New Hampshire!
Thank you for doing this video! I'm from Berlin and it means a lot to me. B&M 4265 is supposed to be restored with displays inside it where the engine was for the public with a train simulator in the cab operated by the locomotives controls. Unfortunately not much has been done to the locomotive and its been broken into I think. The 470 club offered to restore it for display for free but they were turned down because the musam wanted to do it themselves. If you guys could offer to help mabe the musam world except it. Thanks again for the video and merry Christmas!!!!
@Fri Rose unfortunately you are correct. Since the ATV's took over its not "as" quite as it used to be. It also depends on where you live and what time of year as well. Most of the time the atv's are out on the trails buy they do ride in the streets so they can travel from the trails to local businesses, homes, or to get gas. Berlin is still a decent place to live in my opinion, could things be better, yes, all in all you would need to come over and give the city a look over your self. There is also a law I think where you have to keep the noise down from 9pm to 7am if that helps. I wish you luck!
@Fri Rose yes and no. We hardly have anything like that to my knowledge. I think we had one knife attack that happened last year that was mislabeled as a shooting. There are a good number of people in Berlin I believe who are on government paychecks so that's a factor I guess. Most of the people I have met in Berlin are very nice and friendly and don't want to cause trouble. You still need to be careful but you should be fine. There is a gun store if you want to get a gun for someone extra protection. My nabors carry hand guns just incase they come across a bear which have been known to wonder down town. I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just trying to be as honest and polite as I can be on the internet. Berlin is not perfect but it's much better than other places I hear about in the news.
Hi Rick... A friend just shared this with me. So well done. My grandfather appears in the video... he is on the right at 1:45. My dad also worked for the BMRY for many years, retiring as Superintendent in the late 1980s. Thank you for this!!!
Great job on this video!!! I’m a descendent of some of the Brown lumberman in that area so it’s cool seeing videos like this!! (I’m also a forester so the mills are of particular interest as well!)
A lot of good jobs for the people of the Berlin area, sorry most are gone but sure glad one is still open sadly without rail traffic. Just one more thing Guilford messed up on the old B&M !!
This is awesome thank you for sharing Love it. Wish the trains were still running and North Stratford is like ghost railroad and track are gone from Columbia Bridge North. Is that 573 from Nothing Conway?
Thanks for all the comments and memories. Keep watching for more upcoming videos. Also check out our Podcast series High Green for more railroad stories and history. www.bmrrhs.org/highgreen
Small world. My Kenworth T300 work truck came from the local Kenworth dealer and it was an turned in Central Paper Co lease truck in 2001. Truck is still going.
Theres a few trains there you showed in your slideshow they look like 573 from Conway scenic railroad same color but different number they were 15 something
The Boston & Maine's 1500-series EMD GP7 diesels seen in this video were originally painted in the same color scheme as the Maine Central's EMD GP7s, which is what 573 used to be!
The Grand Trunk preceded the creation of Canadian National by many years. It was not a CN subsidiary until CN was formed in 1919 as a merger of the Canadian Northern, Grand Trunk/Grand Trunk Pacific and others.
The Coos County historical sostey may have some information on that. There was a logging line that started out from Berlin. One of the locomotive boilers is still in the woods I think.
After visiting Berlin and seeing where the wood chip plant was built, it seems like there is a dumb simple reason to restore the rails to that area of the town: to bring in wood chips.
I did lots of snowmobiling in and around Berlin and Gorham in late 90s-early 2000s. The Freight trains would go by the motel for hours. The smell was horrible but looking back it was a fun time.
A wonderful history of the paper mills and the B&M operations to Berlin. It’s so sad that it’s all in the past.
Well researched, including many vintage photographs. Good job!

What a masterpiece. Great job.

Super interesting video. Drove through Berlin yesterday and this was recommended to me by YT today! Very sad that the last plant isn’t served by rail
Well done Sir!
Very, very well done, but sad to see its all gone now.
3:16 is so appealing to me. I've always loved looking a track as much as the trains that ride on them.. Great shot here as well as rest of film !!
Great series! The picture with the covered bridge is Groveton and in the background is the Groveton Paper Co.
Too bad the trains weren’t still running through.
Loved seeing that Bankruptcy Blue Rock Island railcar near the end of the video.
Nice clip, well put together and narrated.
Much appreciated!

Cool video. I grew up in Berlin, still live here and I now work for the railroad. I'll have to show this video to some work buddies
Great job Rick!
Great job Rick! Wish it was even longer!
Well done - amazing history!

Wow! That is an awesome connection. Thank you for sharing!
Any arcive of the maine railway through the forest?

The no. 7 locomotive in the video is at Steam Town PA on at the round house.

Unfortunately they can be sourced faster and locally by truck.
Hey that SWAmtrak
Why don't they restore rail service to the remaining mill?
Oh man this screams shelf railroad!
