Phenomenal piece of music by a modern master. Played by angels. Anyone captivated by this particular piece, and this composer should listen to his 5th symphony.

Sir James Macmillan, he is most certianly one of the most important living composers that will forever be listened to. He has several years to be a legend of the 21st century concert culture, and to keep pushing for the best new piece. Compositional commissions are a great way to motivate composers. The commissioning parties are NOT only the people who benefit from the act of paying a composer, but the other 7 billion of us, of which are innately musical creatures from birth.
Macmillan's most fantastic quality, (talent, genius) is his ability to compose music, of all stature, that...when listening to the piece in solitude with a clear head...void of thought...will ABSOLUTELY pluck among the strings of the Heart.
Whether a piece is made explosive or not...maybe it's a tender thing like his 1st mvmt in the 'Seven Last Words...' other worldly. A piece atomically charged as his, Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra no. 1, 'Veni, Veni, Emanuel'.
However, if you are truly a audiophile of concert music, and you have listened to a great amount of pieces by Macmillan...then you know JUST HOW FANTASTIC HE IS when it comes to blending the two ouver in his pieces. Both darkly beautiful and very ethereal. On the flip side of the same piece, he will make the most of it...incorporating the violent, technical, alarming, and I'm so glad to hear that he does this. "This" is truly what makes his grand pieces for large orchestra and choir, MASTERPIECES!
Are there living composers doing something similar to our souls, by composing expertly crafted, with talent oozing from their fingertips, of course.
In America we have a similar creature with the same splender. Yet, with a voice equally as strong and familiar with his fans. Of course I am talking about, Mr John Adams. Composer from the West Coast of the United States, a few masterpieces of J. Adams includes the English language Operas, 'The Death of Klinghoffer' & 'Doctor Atomic'.
His skills are insanely amazing when it comes to orchestrating and technique.
For example, the large orchestra suite, 'City Noir'. The three Mvmt's are intelligent, skillful, and powerful in scope & diversity.
Or something a little different, the composition, ' Sheherazade 2' for Violin and Orchestra.
Ok, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 🇺🇸 Scotland and the USA. I could pick a favorite from every modern industrialized country, but this isn't my blog. And truly we are watching the video because, our passion for the music of Sir James Macmillan is something to be proud about and greatful for.
The only shame that happens is the fact that you won't find, EVERY single one, of his compositional output, on a recording of quality.
Although, and I was craving for some of these personal pieces of his, a CD/Streaming set of secular pieces, etc that he writes for voices|a capella in his local church/es for that day or weeks mass or what have you, for the choir or congregation to sing. From the medium level to advanced level choir. Of course, mad skills are required for singing 🎶.
Check out the CD. It is not hard to find. But I will link Amazon Music Unlimited, streaming music service for anyone interested that has the ability to use the streaming service. The album is in pre-release status, but can be pre-ordered on Amazon for $10 US dollars, approximately.

you, Sir, need to engage brain and at least google before you jump to such silly conclusions. You - clearly know NOTHING about new composition, or indeed music. You need to educate your ears. This composer is a 'poser, has no real technical skills and has two basic tricks that have been polished by years of unwarranted opportunity, so that variations on the same polished but tired turd take up the space of the real thing

Religion has been responsible for more violent human death than any other single entity, so I suppose one should be grateful that in this case it is only responsible for drivel from a two trick pony - a mess of musical notation in which you can alter at least 40% of what is written without altering how it sounds = conflict; and badly written ungrammatical church mode music full of the sonic problems solved centuries ago = 'repose'. Oh yes, add a few 'wrong' notes to show it is modern.
Oh yes, yet another celebration of the triumph of connections over music.

To each his own. Yet, you're being a little bit unmaturistic and prejudice to something you obviously roll eyes on with your comment on this piece (21st century concert music in general?). Yet, the web is much better off without negative feedback, so it goes for some, yet the majority of people in this small niche would rather not read your augur in the end

Gorgeous build up (at 24:00) and then even more gorgeous violin solo at 24:15 - 25:15. Like a beautiful sunset after a storm.

"Stabat Mater" ("The Mother Stood") is a 13th-Century Christian hymn, with lyrics in Latin. You can read about it and see the lyrics (in Latin, in the "traditional" free translation, and in a literal translation) at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stabat_mater

That description is true of many works by Mr. MacMillan -- but not this one. Moreover, since this work is about the suffering endured on Calvary by Jesus and His mother, it HAS to have an element of "horror" to it. The crucifixion was the greatest and most horrific crime ever perpetrated. Every "horror flick" pales by comparison.

Depends on what religions. Communism, a secular religion has been responsible for more violent human death than any other single entity.

Have you listened to the whole work? How many times? You are entitled to.a Knee-jerk reaction, of course, but your comments say more about you than MacMillan. Namaste

    • @EGF1000
      @EGF1000 5 лет назад

???? unfortunately MORE than this work. A two trick pony with the right connections that regularly has produced confidence tricks, passed off as 'composition' that are a mess of musical notation in which you can alter at least 40% of what is written without altering how it sounds = conflict; and badly written ungrammatical church mode.music full of the sonic problems solved centuries ago = 'repose'. Oh yes, add a few 'wrong' notes to show it is modern.
      Try this for size,

      ruclips.net/video/x-SygGiF-kU/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/OwX6MaGu2EY/видео.html
proper composition. no tricks, no bull
and then talk to me about knee-jerk reactions, which applies to YOUR unthought-out nonsense. Clearly, you are musically uneducated and therefore buy into hype rather than understanding anything about music.
ps - you do rather seem to wear your musical ignorance on your sleeve.

@@peterdobbingshetland7635 I agree. This is a very beautiful and imaginative piece of music. I don't understand why it has triggered this response.
