From Malaysian point of view, 10/10 for your review
Onde onde - The usual content shd be Coconut Sugar. This is the first time i am seeing sweet potatoes in it
Chicken Rice - Usually comes with Cucumber slices, not cucumber juicy thingy. As Chinese, chili sauce can be use for any dishes, rice or chicken.
The rest of the dishes are surprising authentic.
    Dang, I am hungry now....

    • @amirulhadi1980
      @amirulhadi1980 2 года назад

I don’t think the green one is cucumber thing. It probably the ginger garlic sauce I guess but they put some greens in it to make it more fresh. I might be wrong because she didn’t describe the taste. Tbh the rice looks so damn good tho

Onde onde is more common in green color from d pandan juice, n it's not too common with purple sweet potato which is typically a nyonya kueh, nyonya is a fusion between d Malaysian malay n chinese. If u have d opportunity, sample more kueh nyonya, I think u may enjoy it as I always do.

Masak tepung beras pulut, menggoreng tanpa minyak sampai tepung masak.
Gaulkan tepung yg dah digoreng tadi dengan keladi atau mana satu ubi yang anda suka dan bentuk ikut cita rasa anda.
Boleh masuk inti, gula melaka atau gula perang.
Kalau kat Sarawak memanglah gula apung atua nama lainya gula nipah.
Tak perlu rebus, siap masuk inti dan dibentuk, tikam je dalam mulut, hehe!
      Selamat mencuba sis!

I heard from my mum that roasted coffee bean with margarine is actually accidentally discovered by people of the past when they try to mimic the westerner putting cream on their coffee when watching western film. Because its a black and white screen tv back then, people thought they put margarine in it. So they experiment on it and it taste unique. From then, the trend started.

Typically in Malaysia Onde-Onde is Pandan glutinous rice balls coated with grated coconut with a filling of melted palm sugar (Gula Melaka), I've never had an Onde-onde with sweet potato, it's very unique.

I guess it's hard for them to find pandan leaves and that's why they've improvised by using sweet potatoes

@@LucileHR onde-onde's texture is similar to mochi, it's supposed to be chewy but soft and light. i think we have something like the purple sweet potato kuih you had that's not onde-onde. i imagine that one was a bit dense/heavy?

You eat what I eat in Malaysia. My ultimate comfort foods especially hainanese chick rice. Apart from the dried sambal (sambal kering) on top of the nasi lemak you had and I guess they gave you sambal belacan instead of real sambal tumis here in Malaysia. I think the rest look delish! Sometimes I eat nasi lemak with sambal kering too. It doesn’t matter still got the kick from the anchovies tho. You make me hungry now 😋

the layered snack was actually sarawak layered cake/kek lapis sarawak. Kuih lapis is actually a cake pudding mix and can be eaten layer by layer. Usually pink and white in colour

Loved the challenge. 5:45 that is kek lapis (layered cake) and not kuih lapis. Kek lapis (famous in Sarawak) made like normal cake ingredients, while kuih lapis would contained coconut milk and rice flour.

Why they served the Nasi lemak with sambal that looks like sambal belacan. Sambal that we always eat with nasi lemak is really red and for sure the sambal does not use vinegar. Sambal belacan usually we eat with white rice. Hope you come to Malaysia and taste the real nasi lemak. You can order nasi lemak with ayam goreng rempah/sambal sotong/ sambal peparu/ sambal ayam and many more. Seriously there's a lot of foods.

Kaya origin is either Malaysian Peranakans Nyonya (Descendants of Chinese, who came from China married with Malay) or from China in the Hainan province
    White coffee is Malaysian Chinese
Most Kuih (u called sweets) are actually mostly by Malaysian Peranakans Nyonya (Descendants of Chinese, who came from China married with Malay)

Hi Lucile! Are these the two in NYC? "I went to Kopitiam and New Malaysia restaurant!"? I ask because NYC is not mentioned so I didn't pick up that these were in NYC.
I really enjoyed your video, but the title LIVING ON MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD was misleading because in NYC I do not think there is MALAYSIAN STREET FOOD? Only in restaurants?
    Thanks!
