@@H9092-2 One thing worth remembering is that, since the second world war, the price (relatively) of aircraft has exploded. So while there might be less planes total, the industrial investment is potentially an order of magnatude higher. Add in the vastly superior (and thus more expensive) training of pilots to that bill, along with the munitions costs and it's practically EVE Online levels of 'That cost how much!?' expenditure for a single battle.

What I find really fun about showdown, and this is something I don't really ever see anyone else pointing out, is that it sounds just like one of those "Breaking News!" or intro jingles to older big time news stations. Which really fitting as this song plays during what is (supposed to be) one of the most historical dogfights of the whole Cascadia war (until some crazy madman with some really big projection problems decided to dole out nukes like candy and its Halloween night, twice, and literally restarting the apocalypse) where both sides of the war are literally throwing every plane they've got into a massive brawl.

Mission 11, Cold War. The one where this song is used. It is a giant sandbox of aircraft where you get to literally show your mastery of the plane, by taking numerous weak opponents. The music is meant to be bombastic, to represent the scale of the fight, chaotic, to represent the mesh of all the aircraft fighting in the skies above. Finally, it must be triumphant, as this is quite literally you and your side, dismantling the airforce of a superior opponent.

I love how, for lack of a better word, 'pure' the mission is, despite the chaos: There's no acrobatic tricks or complex structures, the whole level is basically just the sky above, the water below, and dozens of hostile aerial contacts. There's no surface threats - no tanks, or ships, or structures. There's no gigantic airships or other 'puzzle bosses'.
There's a few basically decorative aircraft around, but other than that its almost purely a test of dogfighting skills and I came out of it utterly *exhausted*.

This is played in the craziest dogfight in video game history. Context: in game, the enemy was using a thunderstorm raging over the Bering Strait to hide a number of transport aircraft as they flew exhausted troops from the front line back to home side. A friendly patrol happened upon them and attacked. The enemy sent reinforcements, allied command sent reinforcements, and it escalated from there. It got to the point that we see in game. Hundreds of aircraft from both sides during it out over a thunderstorm, and sometimes even in the storm.

to give context, this mission is when the two opposing forces send fighters to protect/attack transport planes. Oh man, I had the most gigantic smile on my face the first time I played this mission in the VR home cockpit I built for DCS World.
Like everyone else is saying, it’s just a colossal air melee with countless fighters chasing each other through the sky all around you, and more assembling all the time-It’s almost kind of a “‘Dynasty Warriors’ with fighter jets” energy, and you’re just supposed to dive into the thick of it and show them who’s the king of the skies. But I think what makes it especially glorious is the environment-This crystal blue arctic sky and the low temperatures at 30,000 feet above the Bearing Strait giving every jet big fluffy contrails that tangle every which way as you weave your own through them as well. But then capping it off is that a storm is raging in the cloud deck far below you, and you find yourself dipping into it chasing a diving fighter only to burst back out into the sun and blue sky.
Scratch that-The real capstone is this music, that makes it all a glorious exercise in the wonder of flight and the effortless mastery of your aerial battle machine. It is one of the greatest missions I’ve ever played in any game, period.

For me the whole song gives of kinda a "playfull" vibe. It's quite upbeat and I see an image of smiling pilot clowning on people around him, maybe even going slightly over the top and the toned down middle part is for me is the "seeing something in the distance or future and getting ready for it". I also love how it has a freedom part to it, further playing into it's part in an airforce game, can't get more free than flying in the sky at mach 1.
(I'm no music expert I'm talking how I feel)

Showdown plays during the (in-universe) single largest engagement in the history of air combat. It is effectively a playground for Monarch (the player) to be a badass and destroy as many aircraft as possible, with the NPC’s cheering you on and hyping you up along the way. You can tell that the pilot is just enjoying the battle just by listening to the music.
The dialogue in this mission really sells the idea. We’ve got interactions like:
    ~
“Their flight lead is worth every cent we’re paying him, look at him!”
    ~
“Monarch! It seems you’re our top dog today! Keep it up!”
“Monarch? Hell of a TAC name”
“Entire kingdoms are founded by people like him”
    ~
“I wonder how many aces are earning their wings today, eh?”
“Is this all a game to you?”
    “You bet it is.”

I burnt myself out on AC7, beat the game on all difficulties and even did a no-damage run. Thought I was good on flight action games for a while and then PW came around and just sucked me back in. It’s even more arcadey and frenetic than ace combat usually gets, but that just adds to the experience when you manage to fight your way out of hell.
I actually find it a bit easier to come back to PW than AC for some reason.
Music slaps too, as you’re keenly aware.

This track is the fun one, from a mission where you just go blowing stuff up. It is also the most different from the rest of the tracks, in both feel and the themes it has.
The best track in my opinion is Presidia, combining almost all the themes for the (almost) final battle, incredible feeling.
2nd would be peacekeeper with the intros, sadly not on the downloadable OST
