as always another great video and this is just my opinion but y'all have the best Channel on RUclips very instructional with a lot of great information I love y'all Christian values and how you want to build community and how you present yourself and your Channel. I know I only now y'all through RUclips but you seem very true and honest people and I can honestly say I wish y'all my neighbors. the world needs more people like you. I want to say thank you for all of the information that you give me that is very valuable information and it's something that you do not have to do but y'all find it in your heart to do it and I thank you very much. God bless. glad to see Wanda doing well

I was watching a chinease farmer, liziqi, she air dried her vegetables out in the open, she put the slices vegies in the open air, just sun and wind, and it dried. No heater, no fan.
I tried it, bought big plastic trays from the korean store, sliced mushrooms, spread them out and set them in the living room, it dried, without sun or wind, just takes a few days.
    You have a great show.

    love the video!
I understand why you put them in snack bags by the pint, I always freeze or store my food in single portions then use a larger, more suitable, container to put all the singles in. I get it.

THANK YOU on the step by step video (preserving 101....haha). I vaguely remember my mother canning when I was younger and have started collecting the tools to start canning. My mother is too old to teach me how to can now, so your videos are tremendously valuable to me. God bless you both.

I packed all my dehydrated foods into sealed jars. I've been inspired to change that to bags now. Thanks for the idea.

I love to dehydrate foods and have done for many years though I don't vacuum seal but instead add a tablespoon of dry white rice to each of my jars and this works great as long as the contents is completely dry to start with. Loved your video as always and will share this one for you to one of my pages.😀

Wonderful Video. I sometimes also use canning jars, in case I run out of my Food Saver bags. Just measure the ones in your bag, in a mason jar, to see how many servings you get, and then add to it, until it's filled. Then you know how many servings you really have in the jar. Of course I would also use my Food saver to store them too. It's great to have a backup ready, and to know just how many a pint jar actually holds, when you need to dehydrate and find out you need more bags. Bless, Sheila

We are using jars, but just needed to know how much was in a pint before filling the jars. Now we know how to measure. Thanks

    Hiya Wanda :-D
I had a thought, and that doesn't happen very often, so, listen up. LOL
Respectful suggestion: Instead of using so many bags with 1 pint each in them, , , what if you measured out in a measuring cup how much was in a pint, then just store the peas in whatever you want. (food saver bag,,canning jar,,,5 gal bucket,,,whatever). So, let's say a pint of dehydrated peas = 1 cup. Just write on your container, so you don't have to remember. ;) I think this way, you use less bags, and save a little more money. What do you think?

I dehydrate several things separately when they are ready then at the end of the season, mix them together for soup starter. when ready to make soup, I just have to make my soup base. I do peas, potatoes, onions, carrots, green beans....whatever I want in the soup. Works great!

Before I started dehydrating... I read a historical account of a wagon train trip out west where they said they took bunches of dried fruits (apples, peaches, pears) in those small wagons that the fruit was a barter item also (high value cause of the lack of sugar out there) The article said 3 bushels of peaches (dehydrated) would fit in a pillowcase, I was like "now what??" Then when I dehydrated I saw what they were talking about! I cut peaches thin to dry. My favorite as far as retaining its quality, taste, and color.

Hey wanda and danny, you should weigh your pint of dehydrated english peas for the two of you, then store them, that way you can put more raw peas on the tray to dehydrate and save time.

Just a note that I have found freezing first before dehydrating for peas, blueberries, grapes, onions, celery, carrots helps to dry them out faster...also, if you set the temp of your Excalibur to 95 degrees...it takes longer, but keeps the bioavailability of the vitamins....LOVE my Excalibur! I store in glass mason jars, and have wonderful resources to add to stews, eggs, etc! Note that the flavor will intensify when dehydrating! :-)

    • @DeepSouthHomestead
      @DeepSouthHomestead  7 лет назад

I found out that the flavor was intense. When eating a carrot, it was full of flavor. Thanks for the tips. We are just learning with the Excalibur.

Informative video. :) That is a wise idea to put one pint/shelf. I am glad that you mentioned it. I am looking forward to more of the dehydration videos - it seems like Danny's specialty now! lol ;) Especially any videos with outdoor dehydration. My former elderly neighbor used to climb up on her house and dehydrate on her rooftop!
And WANDA!! You look absolutely lovely in that top you are wearing while holding the dehydrated peas - it is very becoming.

My Granny would put the veggies or fruit on a homemade screen (it looked like an old screen door) out in the sun. When it was too humid she would do them in the sunroom with a dehumidifier, hey whatever worked. It taught us the attitude waste not want not. Are you going to add oxygen absorbers once you vacuum pack?

Thank you for another well-done and informative video. A question - is it necessary to blanch peas/beans/carrots, etc. or does the dehydrating stop the sugar-to-starch conversion process? I'm in Misery/Missouri, so my peas aren't nearly as far along as yours, but I'm hoping they'll do well. Got the Christmas pole limas, first planting of Purple Hulls, and some bush green beans planted yesterday and right now they're getting a nice slow rain on them. Still have to get the pole green beans in, but I need some more cattle panels for that. The family gave me one of those Hoss seeders for Christmas and it's the best thing since sliced bread. Hope you have a great year in the garden!
    Darryl
