  • The first time I tried to install a train wheel bridge into a wristwatch movement was really frustrating.

    Those train videos can be very helpful actually! You just leave the partially assembled movement on any train track and wait for a train to pass: problem solved! 😂😂😂

    Holy guacamole! "Train wheel bridge" is the exact term I searched for which led me to some truly fascinating videos on train wheel construction and how they sometimes melt or break causing all sorts of problems and derailments. Not what I was looking for....
    However, I did find your video which was even more interesting than those choo choo train vids. Most helpful, thanks so much. Oh and the comments regarding camera lenses are great too!

    I feel like this video (speciallly the title) was made just for me 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I always end up screaming all over the house, screaming and cursing, all to just end up going back to my bench and sitting there silently for 10 freaking minutes, staring at the watch and re-thinking my decisions in life 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    Thank you for this tutorial. I have done lots of screaming because of this problem, and have lots of practice movements with a detached train wheel bridge. I will try out your tips and hope to get them installed.

      @@watchout9213 I followed your advice on a rusty old Chinese movement with 4 pivots in the train bridge. Took me almost 1 hour to get all of the pivots into their respective jewels. I even practised picking up the bridge with my tweezers. Using my new trinocular microscope to spot the pivots in the jewels was brilliant advice. Now to practise it again a few times over. Thanks again.

    Thank you for this tutorial. I've noticed for a long time that there is a huge variety in bridging in mechanical watches. Would it be fair to say then that the best bridging for the watchsmith is individual bridges for each pivot?

    • @watchout9213
      @watchout9213  9 месяцев назад

      I don't think so, because each bridge will still need alignment pins to locate it to the plate, and all of that takes space, so I don't think it would be all that practical. Although I think I have seen some older movements on other channels where they did this.

    • @danielrichter2452
      @danielrichter2452 9 месяцев назад

      Ok thank you for your answer. Truly appreciated. I still have to wonder though why some watches are made with more expensive individual bridging if it doesn't have any effect on anything.

    Can you use Rodico to hold the train bridge to place it down on top?

    • @watchout9213
      @watchout9213  11 месяцев назад

      I suspect the Rodico would be more of a hindrance than a help, and you would not be able to see the pivot holes.

  • @drkujavec
    @drkujavec 6 месяцев назад

    I am getting good results by holding the piece right in the center with rodico, which makes it very easy to place it completely vertical. Once in place, I tap lightly with a toothpick to separate the rodico.

    Nice work, skills definitely improving! Very cool you got the Sony camera as well, same model I’ve looked at in fact. Which lens are you using with it? Also can’t wait to see videos with the microscope camera as well, once it arrives.

    • @watchout9213

      Thanks so much! I'm just using the 16-50mm kit lens. There is a 1.5 digital zoom as well. What you see in the video is as close as I can get before it won't focus, on 50mm with 1.5 digital zoom. I almost didn't get the kit lens, but I'm really glad I did. Plan to get another body and a macro lens at some point.

    • @awdturbopowah773
      @awdturbopowah773 Год назад

      @@watchout9213 That's awesome. I am surprised the kit lens is getting such great shots. The macro lenses can actually be surprisingly affordable if you ditch autofocus. You mention it isn't in your way like the phone was -- how'd you get it setup? Tripod standing on bench with camera pointing straight down? That's one way I've seen guys do it.

    • @watchout9213
      @watchout9213  Год назад +1

      It's on a table tripod pointing down at about 45 degrees. Can't do overhead as I was working through microscope. When I am better I won't need to.
      I was thinking about a 65mm Laowa Macro lens. However, I have found the autofocus to be helpful, even though I run the camera in manual focus mode. (Otherwise it just hunts everywhere). Also, it isn't much longer than the 50mm kit lens, so I don't think this would really gain me much.
      I'm also thinking about the Sigma 70mm f/2.8DG Macro. This lens can be had for AUD722, it has focus motors built in. It is a full frame lens, so on the APS-C sensor it would crop up to 105mm equivalent. I think this lens should work really well for the close up macro shots.

    • @watchout9213
      @watchout9213  Год назад +1

      I should mention that because of the 45 degree filming angle, I need to shoot a F11 to keep everything in focus. Seems to work fine.

    • @awdturbopowah773
      @awdturbopowah773 Год назад

      @@watchout9213 Yeah, a lot of light will be needed given high apertures desired to keep focus, especially if you've got a tilted focal plane. It seems like it worked beautifully for you though. Curious about the lenses you mentioned too, looked at the Laowa in particular. It's true it's not a huge step up from kit lens in terms of length, but given you can work some digital zoom in and still be alright with so much resolution, and also the fact you'll have a microscope camera for truly close in shots, I wonder if you really need to go as high as 100mm+. Sometimes I think I couldn't have picked a more expensive hobby to pursue lol -- as trying to do RUclips watchmaking means not only all the crazy expensive watch repair tools, but all this damned camera gear as well lol. Ah well, it's a good thing I took photo in high school 😂.

    So, yesterday I removed the train wheel bridge of my 7 jewel Elgin pocket watch, and I just cannot get it back on. The fact that the train bridge pivot holes aren't jeweled makes it even harder. It's so frustrating that I started crying for a moment. I feel like I'm paying for my sins

      Thanks for this. Using practice and patience makes a lot of sense and I’ll give this a shot. Until now, I’ve been gently screwing down the bridge and fishing the pivots into place, alternately nudging the screws tighter as each pivot finds its jewel hole. It’s a time consuming process. Some folks use tapping on the movement holder, but it seems to require each pivot to be nearly there. My fishing method is like using training wheels on a bike, when your method is like learning to fly.
