This is the most amazing episode I've seen: A tactical, a strategic, and a personal storyline interweaved, and played out well. And I've seen a lot of Combat! since I wuz a kid, an' I'm sure I just saw this episode for the first time. Real footage of Panzer III's--as opposed to M-48's-- playing the role, a realistic intelligence / strategic reconnaissance scenario, and the story of the coward faced with exigency of war, and the logical 3-D conception of the tactical battle are exceptional. The departure from the normal writer and director team is no doubt the cause. A weak point is the squad's lack of questioning the malingering nature of the new arrival, .
hallmobility But early III's, maybe some II's - really should be IV's, Panthers and Tigers, especially in an SS Panzer division at this point. But still much better than the early episodes using 1939 footage of I's and II's in Poland, French junk from 1940, and even some North Africa footage. So much great stuff here - can't guess why their historical footage was so out of place (e.g., Stukas on the Western Front in mid-1944?).
I just assumed Saunders helmet cover was different so the viewers could identify him easier. They all have individual "signatures" Docs helmet the Kirbinators B.A.R, Cajes beret on his shoulder or head, little John is huge, l think it's important in the wooded action scenes and when there is a lot going on.
Great episode. Motto of story, someone stepping up to the occasion, after not for so long. I believe he was in one of my all-time favorite 'B' horror movies...... 'The Killer Shrews'.
A dislocated knee, elbow, or shoulder is painful on the same level as childbirth or kidney stones. When returning a joint to the socket, one does not just "pop it back in," the surrounding muscles are in spasm and a long pull is necessary to relax the muscles and allow the socket to be reset.
Another PH for Kirby. By the time the war is over, the squad will probably have the most PHs of any squad in the Army. I'm glad Sgt. Saunders got GOOD news about his brother.

The US did not invade Okinawa until April 1, 1945 by which time the fighting in France was long over. The one major battle in the Pacific during the summer of 1944 that comes to mind is the battle for Saipan fought in June and July of that year, Not sure if there is any jungle on Saipan.
@@jeffreylc It was a TV show, yes, but one watched in the 1960s by many WW 2 vets who would all have known that the fighting in France was long over when we invaded Okinawa.
Maybe Saunders misread the letter and instead of Okinawa it was Okidaitōjima and his brother was part of a recon unit that sniffed around there in early 45.
I never understood the thing about a rabbit's foot and luck. Aside from being gross it doesn't make any sense; the rabbit had four of them and it didn't do him any good.
to those people who critique this episode, I would say, that perhaps saunders is fighting in Europe ,has no idea or cares whats on Okinawa, only that his brother got out of there alive, give the man a break, its 19401 or 1942 euerope, he had his hands full keeping his men alive, and your telling me about the geographics of Okinawa..Glad his brother survived, 72000 men were killed there, American men...look it up..
Okinawa - April 1st, 1945-Easter Sunday Okinawa’s 466 square miles of dense foliage, hills and trees. The Americans bore over 49,000 casualties including 12,520 killed. General Buckner was killed in action on June 18, just days before the battle ended.Japanese losses were even greater-about 110,000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives. It’s estimated between 40,000 and 150,000 Okinawa citizens were also killed.

Met a Marine Mstr Gunny Sgt. when I was in Navy. We were out on the rifle range training for base defense. I shot well and he tried to get me to cross branch into Corp and become a sniper. the thema in this episode is "everybody wants to hide what it is hurts but nobody cant hide from himself for long time"
I've always liked Roscoe, Not as much as Daisy, but I like him.
Ya had us goin' there for a second,...but ya' pulled through there at the end !!!!
Great show
Good episode !
It's difficult to grasp the weaknesses of another man. Until you fall into the same situation.
Git git git git dem Duke boys!
The US did not invade Okinawa until April 1, 1945 by which time the fighting in France was long over. The one major battle in the Pacific during the summer of 1944 that comes to mind is the battle for Saipan fought in June and July of that year, Not sure if there is any jungle on Saipan.
Not a problem. The show lasted 5 seasons and they never left France LOL
Damn really? You would think these “documentaries” would have their facts correct!
@@jeffreylc It was a TV show, yes, but one watched in the 1960s by many WW 2 vets who would all have known that the fighting in France was long over when we invaded Okinawa.
Okinawa is a flat volcanic rock island but his USMC brother walked out of the jungle...lol..gotta love hollywood thinking!😮
Maybe Saunders misread the letter and instead of Okinawa it was Okidaitōjima and his brother was part of a recon unit that sniffed around there in early 45.
Why on earth didn't they make Cage corporal.
Vic Morrow is so handsome ❤
I blame David Spielberg for morrow’s death by helicopter. Spielberg could have used AI instead of a real helicopter. Two children died in that also.
I never understood the thing about a rabbit's foot and luck. Aside from being gross it doesn't make any sense; the rabbit had four of them and it didn't do him any good.
I agree!
Rabbits foot complaint?..your a boob..Robert at 67.
Morrow was late throwing his hand grenades!
Details, details, details...WHO CARES!!! It's a TV show, not a damn documentary! Go teach history goofballs.
bafongue1
Boy you sure showed me. I promise to do better.. Now GTFOH a-hole.
This is another splendid episode. I'm curious? What does the share button do and this time clock?
Trenton AKA Roscoe P Coltrane
Sgt. Saunders swaggers
That's his early Bronx Jewish heritage LOL
The Saunder's Saunter.
to those people who critique this episode, I would say, that perhaps saunders is fighting in Europe ,has no idea or cares whats on Okinawa, only that his brother got out of there alive, give the man a break, its 19401 or 1942 euerope, he had his hands full keeping his men alive, and your telling me about the geographics of Okinawa..Glad his brother survived, 72000 men were killed there, American men...look it up..
this is 1944 - the D-Day landings June 6th 1944
Okinawa - April 1st, 1945-Easter Sunday Okinawa’s 466 square miles of dense foliage, hills and trees. The Americans bore over 49,000 casualties including 12,520 killed. General Buckner was killed in action on June 18, just days before the battle ended.Japanese losses were even greater-about 110,000 Japanese soldiers lost their lives. It’s estimated between 40,000 and 150,000 Okinawa citizens were also killed.
why did they leave the medic behind..?? where is saunders canteen..?? how does a guy with a bum knee pass his physical..?? why drag him along putting the whole squad in jeopardy..??
The sarge reminds me of my foreman. Good guy. Do your job no complaints from him . he was in the marines , I was navy . we got @long fine.
Met a Marine Mstr Gunny Sgt. when I was in Navy. We were out on the rifle range training for base defense. I shot well and he tried to get me to cross branch into Corp and become a sniper. I said I heard the Marines were looking for a few good men and he agreed. I said they were looking because the Navy already had them. He said FU squid and punched on the shoulder. I said FU too Gunny and he laughed. He was my Dads age and fought in WW2, Korea and Nam. A Marine's Marine. I respected him and would have followed where ever he lead.
Morrow wore a camo helmet so you could tell who he was in long shots...
And I don't mean to be argumentative. Just providing a perspective for a show that was on 30+ times per season for five years.
Curious as to why you would begin a sentence with the word " and ". We all learned in the third grade to NOT F*CKING DO THAT SH*T !!!!!!
@@hermanator74301 You learn in higher grades that it's perfectly acceptable and commonly employed by some of the best writers when writing in a conversational tone.
