I dont rember it being toad for me it was the wire frame fighters and required the credits to be in fast forward mode when the shots were fired for each one, I got all the credits shot so many times but I could never come close in fast forward mode.

Im convinced it’ll come out that pressing down + b caused the game to glitch like super Mario land and created some weird effect that increased the catching ability.

One of my favorite myths was in Mario Sunshine's "Red Coins in a Bottle in Noki Bay". There's this rock formation underwater that just has an unreachable book inside. It's probably just cut content or, considering how previous stuff had become big online, maybe a developer leaving something mysterious just to see if we noticed? Anyway, it was kind of the "L is real 2401" of the Gamecube generation, and I had a lot of fun trying to reach the book to see if it does anything. (Eventually, people glitched their way end and found out you can't interact with it).

I remember one of the first experiences I had with the internet was going onto a website (Cheat Planet and Cheat Code Central) and printing off 30 pages of Pokemon Red rumors. Of course I tried them all including using strength on the truck by the S.S. Anne, using the old rod in a specific spot 250 times, and who knows how many others.
If I was a game developer, I'd put all sorts of cryptic junk like that into my game.

    • @Focie

Yup... I did the exact same thing, but from a website called TRS Rockin. It didn't help that it was one of the first sites that had information on the real "PokeGods" (just the glitch Pokemon with invalid IDs) that you could find via Gameshark, so I assumed everything else must be true as well; that they had special "insider" info or whatever haha.

I've heard about the whole thing with blowing into NES cartridges before. It's like shaking a Polaroid ... something "everyone knows to do" but it can actually damage things. I think constant blowing into the carts as well as condensation from your breath can damage both the cartridges and the pins in your system itself. The classic-game stores around here refurbish NES and fix all the pins, then sell them - they are like new. I don't think they refurbish cartridges, but if I recall, they tell you not to blow into them.

I remember the glory days of 1992. Browsing AOL boards and chat rooms, it seemed every other person had "an uncle who worked for Nintendo" or "A cousin who works at Midway". The "myths" they started were fabulous - Nude-alities was perhaps my favorite. The best was how, as you pointed out, Midway didn't really take any of it seriously, and ended up throwing in some of the old rumors such as Animalities and Babalities.

I used to work at a retro game shop, and Jirard, thank you for bringing the myth of blowing into your games to life. A lot of the times why that works for people is that the spit that gets blown into the cartridge helps form the connection, but yes, it can absolutely rust and ruin your games. Believe it or not, a little sandpaper works wonders, so long as you don't go too deep with it.

  • @Alias1-23

One of my personal favorite myths as a kid was in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. In the Mossdeep space center, there's an NPC who counts the number of successful space rocket launches. The rumor was that if the counter reaches 100, he would let you ride a rocket up to the moon and that would allow you to fight and catch Jirachi and Deoxys.
On the topic of Aerith's death, the visual novel Hate Plus has a fun little easter egg referencing it in its achievements. One achievement is called "Level Four Revive Materia," and the requirement for it is to reach the end of the game with a certain character still "alive." It's actually impossible to get, though, like how it's impossible to revive Aerith.

In Classic World of Warcraft, there was a dungeon called Stratholme where the last boss had a very rare mount you could get drop from him. It had an extremely low drop rate, leading to multiple theories that in order to get it you had to do very specific things such as make sure the boss died within a circle pentagram in the boss room, get to the boss within a certain time limit, or even kill every other trash mob in the level (the dungeon was huge). These kinds of theories spread on to other dungeons and rare loot drops, since people hated the idea that they had zero control over a very tiny drop rate and farming a rare item was made more tolerable when you thought doing certain actions changed the drop rate.

Yeah I was going to point that out. It was meant to be there but sadly things didn't go the game designers way. I believe Guru Larry talked about it. So this magazine basically took that would of been concept and used it to piss off players who didn't know it was almost a real thing.

    • @LukesGamerRoom

spot on. There were several things like that in golden eye. The original ads had early weapon skins that never made it in that always drove me nuts. Though you could use the shotgun one with the all guns cheat. And another one i recently discovered is the original release of the game the manual calls the klobb the spyder. That DROVE ME INSANEE. I was like where the hell is the spyder! Later release manuals correctly call it the klobb

    • @jignjorf9076
      @jignjorf9076 6 лет назад

Yeah it was all of them except for George Lazenby for some reason. They ended up being cut near the end of development for, as you said, legal reasons. Though amusingly enough, before cutting them from the game, some of the developers played as all 4 of them in one final deathmatch to 100 kills, which took about 3 hours.

In the same vein of the FFVII myth, I don’t think it was ever an official myth, but as a kid I was completely convinced there was a way to bring Lavitz from Legend of Dragoon back after he died. I had this whole convoluted plan surrounding the ghost ship. Little did I realize (two years later, because my blonde butt was stuck on a level because I didn’t notice a door I hadn’t gone through in the area) that his death becomes relevant to the plot later, and seeing that made me realize having him accessible in the game again was just a pipe dream.
    ...doesn’t stop me from having fun now and again and manipulating the functions of what creates the New Game Plus glitch and try to merge saves to where he’s an active member of the party after he dies, but that’s just more of my love of glitches and learning their limitations than my vacant need to bring back the first of many characters I grew attached to only to have them be the first to die ;u;

"The Raichu you traded me went and evolved!" is basically the result of translation issues. In the Japanese version of Blue (the source for the text), the Pokemon you trade is Kadabra, which does evolve from trade. The localization team didn't catch these inconsistencies, thus, the start of the "Pikablu" rumor.
At my school, the biggest rumor we had was "Crystal Onix." Someone at the school had found a shiny Onix in Gold (none of us understood what shinies were aside from the Red Gyarados), and after telling everyone where they found it, everyone kept looking for it in the same cave for weeks on end until we got sick of searching for it.

  • @zoenicoletv

One for me and my bro
We were always curious as to why Resident Evil 4 kept track of the number of times you saved. We mastered the game, compleating it 10s of times 100% nothing else to do in the game, yet we still were curious as to why it kept track of that number. We thought maybe if we beat it with a REALLY low number we would unlock one last super weapon.
    Wrong
Sure this maybe wasnt a popular myth but we couldnt have been the only ones who tried this. In our teenage hearts we were so sure it would have lead us to something, much like the Cranky Kong run in Donkey Kong Country. (Which I also fell for when I was a kid)

Yeah, good call to put a spoiler warning for the generation of kids that were born AFTER FF7 came out and the few people who own Playstations but don't play the JRPGs. Remake is going to be a huge let down so I would also suggest playing through the original. I personally put over 99 hours into FF7 when I was a kid, I got a playstation and FF7 for Christmas because a friend had it and it looked amazing. I didn't know you needed a memory card to save the game (I was used to Nintendo cartridges) and played the first 3 or 4 hours of the game a few times before finally talking my mother into getting me a memory card. Then I proceeded to 100% the game and play the mini games for hours.

I heard that same rumor about Sonic and Tails in Melee, from my neighbor, as a kid. I was 90% sure it wasn't true, but that 10% was enough for me to at least attempt to unlock them. Unfortunately, I was nowhere near good enough at Smash Bros. to get 20 kills in Cruel Melee, even after hours of playing, I was lucky if I got past one kill. For what it's worth, I applaud you for being able to do this as a kid, as I can only imagine how hard it must've been.

There's an item you get in FFXI called the Ying Yang robe, it drops from an NM called he Shikigami Weapon. This NM is the direct result of a Japanese player creating a story about an NM that would drop very powerful piece of gear but it'd only spawn in a very specific area and it would appear invisible so you wouldn't even know it's there until it aggro'd you. It became so popular that the developers actually made it into a real thing.

I believe I recall hearing that GoldenEye actually had at one point the other Bonds as playable characters but they were eventually disabled and removed. But the character photo's in the character select screen are still in the game.
Oh god I remember Pikablu back when The Poke Centre was a thing.

I like the ones that involve an odd or detrimental item that is fabled to get you something for beating the game or going to a certain location with it. The kind that people scour the entire game wearing and searching for answers while it is equipped or in your inventory. The ones that immediately come to mind are The Calamity Ring and the Pendant from Dark Souls.

All Bonds Mode was originally going to be in Goldeneye. This feature was scrapped in the finished game due to unknown reasons. It is speculated that it was due to licensing issues concerning using the likenesses of the actors. The finished game still houses remnants of the coding for this, if you go data mining to look for it. You can also reveal the portraits of the other Bonds by using a GameShark. It is also worth noting that traces of All Bonds Mode can also be found in the manual that comes with the game.

Personally, my favourite in-game myth is the secret 5th chest in Destiny’s Vault of Glass Raid. When the Raid first launched, there were 4 hidden loot chests in the Raid. Soon after, a rumour spread that suggested there was a 5th chest somewhere in the Raid. Over the years, various theories have as to how to obtain the chest have circulated: Some suggest beating the first boss without letting it perform a certain action, having 0 deaths prior to and during the first boss fight, finding a way to activate a certain Vex Warp Gate (a ring-shaped portal), or some combination of these and other actions. This myth became so popular amongst the community, that an in-game achievement was added for beating the first boss without it performing the certain action referred to earlier! When the Raid was brought up to the current Light Level last year, the developers put in a 5th chest, though it has been referred to as the 6th chest due to the fact that Bungie has never officially called it ‘The 5th Chest’. To this day, people still hold out hope that Bungie will confirm the existence of this legendary reward!

Lol, probably a REALLY obscure gaming myth, but one I tried for ever to complete: it was claimed that, in Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town on the Game Boy Advance, if you befriended Barley, the owner of the neighbouring animal farm, he would borrow your dog and one day bring you the puppies that his dog and your dog produced. It took me a LONG time to accept that there was no way to get puppies in that game 😅

Fun fact on the NES blowing myth: part of the problem is the front-loading design of the American NES. The Famicom doesn't have this problem, being a top loader, but the NES will gradually have its contacts bent downwards and out of alignment after many, many controller presses down. It's possible to open the NES up and bend the pins back into shape.
Supposedly the change in design was due to the US video game crash in the early 1980s, so Nintendo redesigned the NES to resemble a VCR, to make it more appealing. No idea if THAT part is true, though.

And sadly, like so many others, the myth of saving Aeris / Aerith will forever be naught but that. Who knows what will happen in the FF7 remake.

You can actually keep Aerith as "uninteractable zombie" thanks to one glitch involiving Yuffie encounter that corrupts save file. I don't remember details, but it will transfer your party data from one save to another, so as long as you have save before she lefts your party and do this glitch after she dies, you can have her back

There is an actual cow level in Diablo 3 as well, but you can only get to it during the month of March. During that time if you go to the Immortal Throne, Kanai's spirit appears an opens a portal. Following him in leads to a hunting ground full of angry cow-men for you to slaughter.

Some of my favorite myths were in Ocarina of Time. If you threw a bomb into the center of the lava at Ganons Castle then the bridge will open up so you can fight him without any other resources.
And the other was that if you could get to where you fight Volvagia in the volcano, as Child Link. You would find Zelda and Ganon. If you beat Ganon, then you would have all 3 pieces of the triforce and that was the only way to collect them.
All bullshit, but a lot of fun to speculate on back then.

I do remember getting mew behind the truck because that was the only way I could get it as a kid. I had Pokémon Red and Yellow. And it only worked on Red for me, but I had to use my Xploder (gameshark) cheat cartridge to make it happen. I remember gliding past the seaman at the dock and floating around the inner map (even ghosting across the water and wall tiles). Only thing I can't remember is if they were user codes you found on the Xploder forum by other members or if they came packaged already on the cartridge. But regardless of the exact details I do know without any doubt I had mew in my team. I remember getting very excited about this new mysterious Pokémon I've never seen before as either the movie had not come out yet or I hadn't been to see it at that point.

This is a bit unrelated, but before we got the English 2nd Gen Pokémon cards in the US, I convinced my parents to buy me a pack of Japanese cards from a local theme park. The holo I got was Azumarill - which obviously, at the time, I had no idea what it's name was, but it was cool knowing that Marill had an evolution at a time when the only thing people knew about it was that he looked like a blue Pikachu.
There are few things I remember ever being so excited for as 100 new Pokémon.

I remember making up a myth for myself, and believing it so much that I thought it was real.
I remember, in Luigi's Mansion in the art gallery, there's this drain out of the wall. Good old times, will miss those days no one knew anything. Now we have dataminers :(

  • @jaykay6222

Well, it's no resurrection, but I heard there's a sort of glitch you can manufacture on FFVII where you can cause Aerith to be in your party after she is supposed to be dead. I could not even remotely begin to explain how it is supposed to work, but basically you wait to get Yuffie until relatively late, and then the glitch makes it so that when you would get Yuffie later it "teleports" Aerith into your party instead. Idk.
I honestly hope they do something with this in the remake games. Having references to old school legends and glitches and easter eggs and other nonsense that has been talked about for years would be pretty awesome. Especially if they added in a legit method to revive her or something.

My elementary school's local myth was for Mario Kart Double Dash. Supposedly you could fly out of bounds on Rainbow Road onto a shooting star, and that star will take you around to the finish line and you'll win. We spent hours trying, but conveniently, nobody could get it when we were all together. I have to wonder if that was a myth for anyone else, too?

Of course this was all bullshit but I spend so many times dying on bowser just because I wanted to try it.

I don't know why, I guess it's the old-school Zelda fan in me, but I've always been partial to the once endless rumors that you could obtain the Triforce in Ocarina of Time. Everyone nowadays knows it's bunk, but I remember fondly the days (before arguments over open world vs. linearity, cartoony vs. realistic artstyle, motion controls vs. traditional controls, etc.) when Zelda fans would speculate about how to get the Triforce, where it could be, and what it might mean for the lore of Ocarina of Time and for the Zelda series (to that point) as a whole. I don't even think most of us truly believed there was a Triforce to be found... it was just fun to ponder in those days.
