Macinac Bridge..... most beautiful and and “mighty” of them all! Ive driven over this bridge probably 100 times, but never in the winter! Gotta be brave! 🤓🙂
The straits of Mackinack..As a youthful irish boy I used to pronounce it with an ack ending rather than aw. One of the longest and most graceful bidge spans in the planet. I never thought I would see the day that I would witness crossing this bridge in video. Thanks for this video. Yesterday I watched a video of the Paducah, KY bridge, another favourite of mine from the US encyclopedias of the 1970's. Such are the visions and dreams of youth from the 1970's in bridge deprived Ireland. We do not have rivers and straits big enough to warrant masterpieces like these.
Been across hundreds of times. Scares the hell out of me every time. There is a bridge entering New Orleans from the east that scares the hell out of me also. There are just too damn many people not paying attention while driving.
Amen to your last comment. Too many people out there, trying to commit unintentional suicide, and take someone else with them. Driving demands your almost complete, and undivided attention. Listen to the radio, but that's it, and don't use earphones. You need to be aware of the traffic laws, and what's going on around you. Driving is a full-time responsibility.
@@ericdavis6261 I don't think he's talking about the Lake Ponchartrain (?) Causeway, but the Bridge that carries I-10 into New Orleans. The I-75 Bridge across Tampa Bay Inlet, is also pretty scary.
Louisianan here who now lives in Michigan. I crossed the Mackninac island bridge and I know exactly what bridge in LA you're talking about. it's the Lake Ponchatrain Causeway. took my then girlfriend and she was sick trying to drive over it, I had to cross. it's not for the faint of heart.
Used that bridge about 40 years ago. A little scary crossing it; but it also gives you an appreciation of just how big The Great Lakes are. Really, Lakes Huron and Michigan are one gigantic lake (roughly 10,000 square miles, and my math is a little fuzzy, so they may be much bigger, but crossing the bridge, with both lakes vanishing into infinity, makes them feel like an ocean. The best view is near the north end of the bridge, at St. Ignace. U.S. 23, going up the Huron Coast, from Standish to the I-75 Interchange, is very scenic; just south of Alpena, a sign informs you that you are halfway between The Equator, and The North Pole. If you continue north into Canada, the last east-west Highway is Ontario 11; to go north of that, you either need to catch a train; canoe, or use an off-road vehicle. The weather, I suspect, is just too harsh, and tears paved roads apart. Ontario 11, I think, is about 350 miles north of Saute Saint Marie.
I spent several summers camping up in Wawa, Ontario. Instead of heading north immediately out of Soo Canada, I would head east towards Thessalon, then north up 129, and finally west on 101. Great roundabout way to get up there. Provincial parks were stellar.
i love the internet, playing aroudn with google maps to find places like this and then promptly finding som eone takign an awesome video of this. thank you

Thanks Jason! Watching this video from Leszczyny-Czerwionka in Silesia Poland with a friend who's never visited the States yet. I've been living in PL since 2010. I've walked the Mac 2x in my lifetime. Nothing like the Mighty Mac here but our Baltic Sea coast to the north looks similar to Lake Superior. My family still owns property in Hessel. The UP is really the only place I miss in the US. Cheers!
Loved being up in Northern Michigan! Mackinac city is a fabulous place, the Island too! But I have a special place in my heart for Mackinac city. The only other place I know ( besides my home town...Otterbein) where they park in the middle of the street. ❤
So... Just watched this. Only thing I can say is wrong about it is that you are going South. ALWAYS GO NORTH! North is where it is at! I crossed the bridge, (and when we in the UP state "The bridge", we mean only one) ... Last March in a blizzard, surprised as hell they let us go. And so, at 20 MPH I looked down, and saw an icebreaker towing a freighter through the channel...One of those memories I will carry forever!
Our family crossed the straits on the ferry when the bridge was being built I think I'm the summer of 1957. Still have a picture in my mind. Our father crossed every nov. to deer hunt at rock river on the ferry and directories of the long line of traffic waiting for their turn on the ferry
I love going over the bridge but the thing I love the most is not having any traffic behind me.. and giving the guy a hard time about paying a toll so they could feed the troll that lives under the bridge.. I know it's expensive to feed the trolls.. and lightly playing tug of war with the money is just fun... I'm glad it's a maned station.. and I know there's a troll under the bridge that's why they want a toll
When I lived in St. Ignace there were always the knuckleheads wanting to be the first over to the Rock to get free drinks at the Stang or V.I. More often than not the snow machines ended up in the drink🤣 Had friends who rode their machines from St. Ignace to the island to hit the bars, and overnight a wind shift would push four miles of ice into the straits, leaving them to fly home or see if the Huron would leave its dock to come get them the next day.🤣
On a side note: "On the Road to Gwynn. Just can't seem to find the Road to Gwynn. This happens every time I'm drinking with my friends. I just can't seem to find the Road to Gwynn." Da Yoopers😉

They use an ice breaker appropriately named the Mackinac to keep the shipping lane open not only for shipping but to keep wolves from crossing from the Upper Peninsula to the Lower.
It’s nice to know you are paying attention to your phone rather than the road. Please keep us informed when you are out on the roads, So we can get the fuck out of the way!
Dangerous travel I experienced as a sophomore in high school going to travel across the bridge northbound during a storm. 2.5 hours of my life as a high schooler with my fellow cheerleaders who were scared as we crept across. At night with high winds and snow.
I missed the escort , so went by myself, big detour coming from manastique had to go towards the soo back to 75 and out of the mess whiteout on 2 , normal day in the u.p.
99% of people from the area know not to cross the way you mentioned. They do take snow machines from st iggy to the island tho. As a kid growing up in cheboygan we often went from cheboygan to bob lo island to round island to mackinaw island. we would ride over the shipping channel, which you could tell was fairly fresh.
Bob Lo Island? In northern Michigan? Which one is that? As a Detroiter, I remember going as a kid to the amusement park on Bob Lo Island in the Detroit River.
After living in Germany 35 mph seems fast after driving 30 kph on these inner city streets. Gonna suck when I drive back in the states adjusting back to miles!😅😂
Lol.. pardon the profile pic and name But im here in Mackinaw right now on vacation. I found this looking for local news and weather.. i wondered how that bridge was in the winter.
This video would be a lot better if he hadn't been live streaming on at least one other device at the same time. And that's leaving out the fact that you're supposed to be focused on driving when you cross this particular bridge. Depending on the water level in the lakes, it's about a 200 foot drop from the highest point of the road deck to the water. That's like hitting a concrete wall at something like 50+ miles an hour, with the bottom of the deepest part of the channel being well over another 200 feet down.
We came across this bridge 1 time in the summer with a severe thunder storm. We had to be escorted and the waves were breaking over parts of the bridge as she swayed back and forth. Kinda scary and cool at the same time.
Sand is used mostly. Salt is corrosive, not to mention it would all end up in the water. There's enough residual salt from vehicles, coupled with the sand, to keep things moving.

You couldn't have picked a better time to do it. Michigan in the winter is a sight to see, as long as there's enough snow to cover the whole ground.
Cross that bridge once a month. Never gets old going over it.
Made many winter crossings over Big Mac. A couple times, the snow was so fierce, the towers weren’t visible until you were right underneath them.
Been across hundreds of times. Scares the hell out of me every time. There is a bridge entering New Orleans from the east that scares the hell out of me also. There are just too damn many people not paying attention while driving.

Did the Mac on a motorcycle a few years ago. Those iron grates are like riding on ice. White knucled the length of it
