    The charts were pretty inaccurate around 1994-1998. Billboard didn’t allow certain songs to chart if they didn’t have a physical single released until 1999. So songs like Don’t speak, Men in black, torn, iris, mr jones, ill be there for you, how bizarre, one headlight, and lovefool didn’t chart despite how insanely popular they were. For those years i would highly recommend looking at the year end radio charts as well. They paint a more accurate picture of what was popular. Edit - forgot that this started to become a problem in 1994 actually, not 1995. Mr jones by counting crows didn’t chart either.

The constant build you up to take you down. Kurt left too early to have the decades of intense media scrutiny and tabloid fodder like MJ and Britney. But I’m being nitpicky - I do agree with what you are saying cause I was there and watched her massive meteoric rose to ultimate celebrity. It was insane. It’s amazing she is still with us. All those cameras in the 00’s following her every move was like from a horror movie

    Ricky Martin sounded really gentrified, but that’s also where a lot of top-flite Latin pop was at the time. Livin La Vida Loca was just as big in Latin America as it was in the US, etc. That being said, there were also a lot of LatAm megahits that did lean kinda into traditionalism and identity, used traditional instruments and sounds/motifs (often in gimmicky and “inauthentic” ways) etc. Guys like Carlos Vives, etc were omnipresent from like 96-05.

    • @TheMFYeti
      @TheMFYeti 7 месяцев назад +1

      About the same spot on the timeline, Enrique Iglesias might be another face for that wave of LatAm pop music. Lots of songs incorporating more “Latin” sounds, actual Spanish lyrics, be it lines or whole Spanish versions of songs, and leaning into his accent rather than a sanitized singing voice.
      At the same token, you could argue he’s borderline an industry plant, given how his father, Julio Iglesias, is literally the most successful Spanish singer in the world.
      Also, impossible to forget that Marc Antony was fucking crushing it too.

    Genie in a bottle isn't just a horny song, it's about the singer navigating the minefield of their budding sexuality as an inexperienced young woman who doesn't want to be used and who needs to go at their own pace. It's heavy on the innuendo because it's trying to thread the needle of talking about sex from a teenage girl's perspective without being too explicit. Imo it's a solid B tier at least.

      This is a crazy take from all of you. Baby One More Time is an amazing song in many ways. Maybe not lyrically but musically it's great and is the one that holds up and is remembered. It holds up so well people do covers of it in different genres and it still slaps because it's fundamentally good songwriting. Genie in a Bottle is fun but sounds very much of it's time, without any sort of classic songwriting fundementals to allow it to stand up as a classic. And the innuendos are so so cringe as Anthony says. They're so obvious it would be less weird if she just said what she meant lol. Not that I hate the song but saying Baby One More Time holds up less is crazy.

      Interestingly that's just the handful, and then the rest are largely about crippling depression and anxiety. Really unique band and it's a shame there wasn't really much of a place for them in the industry. But I'm glad they had their one big hit at least. And it wasn't some insipid commercial tune that they came to resent, it was actually a great song they could be proud of.

    Sugar Ray got a lucky bounce and got big right around the time Sublime did and everyone found out Nowell was gone. For many kids, myself very much included, Sublime was our first real taste of sort of reggae influenced music. Prior to this our musical lives revolved around grunge, Metallica, and whatever classic rock our parents listened to. We were starting to discover punk, that lead us to sublime, which blew our tiny minds. This isn't meant as hyperbole either, the first time I saw the video for "fly" by SR was within maybe a month or so of my first time hearing Santeria and genuinely feeling like that was the end of that style of music. Sugar Ray, Incubus, 3/11, common rider, a whole bunch more, regardless of each bands merit on their own a big chunk of their success relied on young sublime fans trying to fill that void and going with stuff that was at least kind of similar. Then every handful of years or so we would be shocked to learn that yet another one of our favorite sublime songs was a cover, but that's a whole other thing.

    The fact that 90s Britney and Christina were seen as wholesome is pretty funny. That said, Max Martin's teen pop songs have so much better lyrics than New Edition, New Kids on The Block or early One Direction, which to be fair, were all catchy and very well produced. But Max Martin's lyrics, even on the most youth leaning artists, are not cheesy.
