Rubellite had warned her about this. Aurum had always known, logically, that her wife was not going to be queen forever. That's the main reason they had dragonets, after all. But Aurum had always liked to think they were a family, different from all of those daughters and sisters that challenged the queen for the throne. Even if Rubellite made it a point to not get close with her daughters, they were still a family. Together, happy and loving and alive.
At the very least, she had hoped that they would have many years together as a family. She had never really taken into account Sierra's ambition. She didn't understand why her daughter, the oldest, the one Aurum was closest with, would challenge the queen, Rubellite, the dragon Aurum would give her life for in a heartbeat, for the throne at the age of twelve.
But here she was.
And when Rubellite lifted her head sadly to meet Aurum's eyes, when Sierra no longer moved, when Merlin let out a choked sob, she knew, deep down, that the right dragon was still in charge.
But she also knew that there would never again be a moment where she didn't miss her daughter.

aNYWAYS on a bit of a lighter note (pun intended) i'm kind of ehh about the lighting? this scene happens during an eclipse and i had a really cool image in my head for it but it's just tOO RED. i tried fixing it in editing and was semi-successful but i still think it looks a little weird, but whatever.
also first time drawing rubellite and sierra fullbodies which is cool
as for the song... idk it's kind of the only sad song i could think of that would fit
i was kind of on the fence about using this song in particular because on the one hand-- fantastic song that really sets the mood for this piece
but on the other hand it reminds me of someone i don't like to think about so there's that :/
overall i'm pretty happy with this speedpaint! i feel like there was something weird going on with multiply on aurum but it turned out fine so whatever
but yeah
