This is actually true, and great for, learning in general. In all different, various areas. It’s actually a concept used to learn much more, way faster; and to master concepts in entirety as well - of course, its use is purposeful in achieving that mastery at a faster rate.
I started learning piano with Canon Pachelbel without even knowing its chord and the note because I was having much fun with the piano ,later when I become more advanced I realized that it was played in D chord and I started to become more confident with other classical songs, I started to learn how to find a note by myself and boom I go step ahead to my level
I agree, I started by learning licks and chord voicings that I couldn't even use in a song because I didn't understand how, I just liked the way they sounded on their own so I learned them. Then over the years I build up a foundation of theory knowledge and I finally understand those things that I learned but never understood. So it's never a waste of time to learn things even if you don't understand what you're doing, because eventually it will make sense and just knowing this stuff lets you connect the dots easier
Honestly as a mathematician and programmer this concept seem to generalize really well to all learning: do first then after try to understand. So true man!! People always asked me how i got so decent at guitar. I learned songs. Theory to them after made it make sense. Once you are experienced, then you learn theory more and songs 2nd so they make more sense
Facts. I’m a drummer all my life. Did some minor xylophone when I was a kid so I was somewhat familiar with notes on the piano. But drumming and the xylophone was the same. Learn songs first, then get to practicing developing your most comfortable technique to perform flawlessly. Everyone is different and can’t all be taught by some technique guru or music teacher. I started playing piano recently as I became visually impaired and needed a new hobby. Learned a song I really like within the first couple weeks to get somewhat comfortable.
Great advice mate. I am self taught. Year in I have learned many songs and wrote about 15. The weird thing is I have only recently started to learn the chord names. Major minor diminished ect . Without learning the chord names I have had to literally memorise individual keys, even chord in every song. I did it the hard way . This guy is spot on with what he says.
oh wow, that was so informative...GREAT JOB, SIR....thats why it's so important to learn your major & minor scales and major & minor arpeggios...GREAT JOB!...
That’s a very good advice. I play violin and I started playing hard pieces even though they were hard and it leveled up my skills faster than I thought
That's my biggest tip for people, play what you love first and enjoy it. Theory makes it make sense on a technical level but feel comfortable playing it first. Theory is like learning a language's rules and structure, playing it is like speaking the language. You can study it all you want but if you don't speak it you won't pick up on the nuance like accent or slang. Don't feel like you need to learn theory first to be good, but both are important.
Indubitably!!! I worked on nothing but theory the first year I played guitar and piano...didn't try to learn a song until I understood the theory behind most (common) chord progressions 🎼🎹🎸
I have learn some songs while i was beginner(a classical song) and all i know was it sound great. It look pretty impressive. But now i have understand something like “chord progression I-V-VI-III-IV” and pretty much everything else. This is a very nice tips
This is exactly how i learned acoustic guitar! except right now im stuck in only cowboy chords and barre chords, still trying to perfect it before moving on to flat picking
Thank you for your advice. I always try to do a song that is harder than what I'm used to just to push my limits further. I'm still a beginner and only know basic chords, but what I like to do is mess around with the cords and try to put something of my own together.
I started taking piano lessons years ago and of course they teach you theory and reading sight music and one hand at a time. Then I started taking gospel keyboard lesson where I had to learn by watching his hands, no sheet music or comprehension of music theory and it frustrated me. I learned at least 3 gospel songs fully but no theory understanding. Looking back now. It did make sense because the point was to learn common gospel patterns and chords so I could play other songs. I wish I remembered them now. 😒
Yep that’s what I did with a move you taught a while back based from Jayden Arnold, learned it from you and couldn’t do it in other keys until months later when I started learning my other keys and actually seeing how the move worked.
My Choir master thought me how to play drums. His main focus was just to teach how to play rhythms of songs. I eventually adapted to that reality until I came across the music theory for drums. Introduced myself to rudiments and everything I had learned from my choir master began to make sense I was just apply stuffs to what I already knew and it was like damn sheeesh this sounds great! How come I didn’t know all this all this while. #like my man said, its always the music first ❤
I wasted 20 years trying to Wing it , I knew the Notes and what Sounded Good but it was something Missing, So during Covid I learned Music Theory and When You Get that Ah Moment and it Motivates You to Keep Going ! Yep Learn Song and You Will Suddenly Understand but it takes Focus , Circle of Fifths burn it in your brain and Master Your Scales.💪🏾
Super accurate, the first thing i learned was truce by twenty one pilots... But had no idea wth i was doing, then learned lot of chords and scales and notice the theory. Love it!
Yup. One thing I learned as an early player is challenging myself to learn a whole song…step by step. The chord structure especially. As long as it took…. Then I’d learn the same song in a half step up & a half step lower in key. You learn a whole lot of how theory all ties together.
You're absolutely right. I was struggling with a lot of stuffs on the piano before I started learning music theory 😃😂 Theory opens your eyes to a lot of things and simplifies everything....
Actually some really good advice. The thing to keep in mind no matter what you do or try should always be “but does it sound good?” That’s what it always comes down to. You could spend years writing the most technical and harmonically intricate piece ever crafted but if it doesn’t sound good… what’s the point? Conversely there are songs by legendary artists like Lennon and Mcartney and BB King and Johnny Cash which, theoretically, are stupidly simple, but we still play them because they sound THAT GOOD. Always ask “does this sound good?”
Thank you man. I thought I needed to understand everything I was playing before I play it. Now Im going to learn to play a song and understand how it works afterwards. God bless 😁
Wish u all the success because this is true. Been making music for 7 years for the love of it and learning theory made it hella fun and way more clear !
Honestly I’m the opposite way. For me it’s theory first then music. I’ve been noodling on guitar for years and been able to play a few riffs/songs from tabs but didn’t understand anything because I had no theory. However now with my piano learning I’m trying to fix my past mistakes and I’m learning theory first and it’s helping me learn new songs SO MUCH QUICKER 🤯
I wish I learned this way. Been at it for 4 years and all my teacher has really done is tell me to remember how to play the songs properly and give me a few pointers each class, but not even on piano as a whole just on playing that song. Still forget what some notes are when learning a song, and the fun’s been long squeezed out.
I’ve got about 90% of “Echoes” Pink Floyd learned and down on keyboard. The verses are C#min, G#min, F#min, and G#maj. but the C# is inverted. Never knew about chord inversions and it literally blew my mind.
I learned to play piano for the first time in elementary school. I played then clarinet. I loved the fact that I was placed into a piano class as my elective for H.S requirements. I really wanna get back into music. I am 19.
I self taught myself the piano (mostly) and learned theory on the side. For some reason, learning the piano on my own made my ears super strong and my understanding of music theory really natural
Exactly! I have been playing guitar for years and all the stuff I learned as a beginner I had no clue what it even was, but it sounded cool. Wasn’t until much later where I can name what I was doin. It just comes naturally, hard to explain
I've always said learning major and minor chords is step one then progression. If one can get comfortable with chords and how progression works, you can play anything

As a later beginner, almost intermediate I've come across the importance of this tip, they're alot of things I could hear when I started earlier and then now I nod my head like aaaagh I now see
Awesome tip
God bless you
✊🏾 God bless you as well!
I appreciate you as someone who understands that the new generation needs music theory... A lot of RUclipsrs just sell some midi pack nonsense to the beginners
Thanks
Very helpful video. I remember Paul McCartney saying one time how he would get on the piano, break up chords, and create songs out of it when he was with The Beatles.
Just explore, the understanding will come later! 🙌🏾

I also want to say that Jesus is the Bridegroom and I (and the Church) are the Bride. Jesus is coming back and not a lot of people are ready because not a lot of people are living for Him. But God is living and merciful and it’s never too late to repent.
Please, anyone who sees this, turn back to God. He loves you.
Jesus Christ loves everyone and died for all of our sins. Jesus also rose again from the dead three days later, proving everything He said to be true (before He died He said He would rise again from the dead). Everyone has sin and the wages of sin is death. Sin leads to death and death leads to hell (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23) But Jesus died for our sins and paid our debt to sin, so anyone who chooses to believe in Him will be saved from hell and could go to heaven. If you want to make Him your Lord and Savior you could say this prayer: Lord Jesus, I confess You as my Lord and Savior. Please forgive me for all of my sins, I repent and I turn to You. Please help me to live for You, and I love you. In Jesus name, Amen!
If you prayed that, Glory be to God! Please get a Bible, read it every day, pray everyday and please go to church. Jesus loves you!
Thank you 🙏 for sharing.🙏✨☮️💕
Thanks man I did the same thing that you did.
The first song I learned was Bohemian Rhapsody and that helped me a lot
Great advice mate. I am self taught. Year in I have learned many songs and wrote about 15. The weird thing is I have only recently started to learn the chord names. Major minor diminished ect . Without learning the chord names I have had to literally memorise individual keys, even chord in every song. I did it the hard way . This guy is spot on with what he says.
Thanks for your comment! 🙏🏾 Keep striving for greatness! ✊🏾
oh wow, that was so informative...GREAT JOB, SIR....thats why it's so important to learn your major & minor scales and major & minor arpeggios...GREAT JOB!...
great tip! thats where i am .... Im learning theory of my favorite songs I play. Its not easy but rewarding one chord at a time
Yup! Don’t be in a rush to understand it 💯! One day it’ll just make sense!
@@DeyquanBowens 💯
❤true..@@DeyquanBowens
Yup! EXACTLY how I learned.
That’s a very good advice. I play violin and I started playing hard pieces even though they were hard and it leveled up my skills faster than I thought
💯
Even more beneficial to learn it in 5ths..
See you understand the process!
First thing i ever learnt on piano was Gary Jules Mad World. Just loved the way it sounded on Piano
Thanks man, I’m getting my first piano tomorrow, it’s a kawai es120 can’t wait to start learning
Best of luck!
Need you as my piano teacher
Come join DB Music Academy!
I’ve been a musician for 12 years and 100% agree with this. Well said.
His makes so much sense!!!! I would literally learn songs by copying each key which is insane and challenging and always makes me miss some cords
That's what I did learning guitar! Now I'm learning piano and this is definitely showing I'm already a step ahead knowing how chords work
Like always If u really wanna learn something u gotta love it and just go explore it by yourself thats the best feeling
Learning c major scale and c blues scale first thing I learned on keyboard piano.
As someone who's been stuck for years behind the challenge of comprehending music theory, that lay quote hit me like a brick.
You're absolutely right. I was struggling with a lot of stuffs on the piano before I started learning music theory 😃😂 Theory opens your eyes to a lot of things and simplifies everything....
It made sense because I learned it first! Now when I applied theory, I didn’t have to think about the notes!
Perfectly said thank you Deyquan.
Thank you for the insight, Sir!😊
Thank you man. I thought I needed to understand everything I was playing before I play it. Now Im going to learn to play a song and understand how it works afterwards. God bless 😁
they say keyboard is best for beginners but I think it's just the best instrument. it can do ANYTHING
I am just getting back in to learning piano with my daughter and this was so helpful! ❤
I wish I learned this way. Been at it for 4 years and all my teacher has really done is tell me to remember how to play the songs properly and give me a few pointers each class, but not even on piano as a whole just on playing that song. Still forget what some notes are when learning a song, and the fun’s been long squeezed out.
It’s not too late to learn that way. You have to let your curiosity lead as well! What do you listen to that inspires you to get to the piano? 🙏🏾
Appreciate this advice !!
🙏🏾
Thank you Sir for your advise. God bless you
I’ve got about 90% of “Echoes” Pink Floyd learned and down on keyboard. The verses are C#min, G#min, F#min, and G#maj. but the C# is inverted. Never knew about chord inversions and it literally blew my mind.
If it was that easy. I dig it though. Been wanting to learn forever. Def watching your videos bro 💪🏾
I learned to play piano for the first time in elementary school. I played then clarinet. I loved the fact that I was placed into a piano class as my elective for H.S requirements. I really wanna get back into music. I am 19.
It’s not too late. START! ✊🏾
Facts just listen and do it by ear is the best teacher
Yeah good tip. Get started then get better because starting the hardest part. 💯
Appreciate it Bro, I Love the tip melody,, ☺️🎹🙋💫😍
I self taught myself the piano (mostly) and learned theory on the side. For some reason, learning the piano on my own made my ears super strong and my understanding of music theory really natural
This is absolutely so true. Thank you for spreading the word💪
He's got a point 🤝
Go on, how long have you been playing piano ?
I like this approach 🙌
Exactly! I have been playing guitar for years and all the stuff I learned as a beginner I had no clue what it even was, but it sounded cool. Wasn’t until much later where I can name what I was doin. It just comes naturally, hard to explain
This actually may have helped me more than you know, thank you
I've always said learning major and minor chords is step one then progression. If one can get comfortable with chords and how progression works, you can play anything
This hard, Bro🔥💪🏾🥶
yesss , I just started piano and this is so true it just clicked
I learned that way. It was way later on in life with many songs where I figured out the theory. I play by ear tho so you know how that go
Learning what arps was was a game changer
I love learning about chords I don’t know what they are because I’m a beginner in piano but it’s fun and I would like to know
